Château de Sully

"Grandiose is the term that springs to mind when describing this 18C château, set in landscaped grounds planted with Lebanese cedars and sequoias. Take a seat in one of the plush dining rooms or in the bright conservatory to savour the chef’s predominantly Normandy-focused cuisine: vegetables, cheeses, foie gras and, of course, line-caught fish." - Michelin Inspector

Nice place to stay. Clean & peaceful. We were very well surprised wirh the quality and tasteful diner. Breakfast wasn’t so fabulous. Eg, egg cooker and some material was stuck. We were expecting more local specialities.

Review of the restaurant. What a sad disappointment. The worst experience in a week of good food in Normandy. The building is indeed impressive and extraordinarily well kept. The only exception is the toilet, which seems to require a bit of attention. Unfortunately, the service or food have not been matching expectations. I emailed to book well in advance. I did not receive a response for some time and only after I emailed once more I was told a table was available. I did mention it was a special occasion and we were really looking forward to the Michelin recommended cuisine. Throughout the evening, there was no acknowledgment of the special occasion by staff (not even a "happy anniversary") While of course this is not compulsory or required, it is part of the experience and expectations. And part of the service. But not a big thing. Our table was not ready, despite being the time of the booking, so we went to the bar for a drink. Drinks were a bit of a mess. The gentleman behind the bar was friendly and surely did his best. He mentioned  the fact it was his second day on the job. That is all well and we did our best to make him feel at ease. The problem though is: why was someone clearly not experienced for the job the person responsible for a service? We asked for a simple international cocktail when we realised it would have been a struggle, but the poor guy had no idea how to make a Negroni (1/3 of each of the 3 ingredients and a slice of orange. No shaking, no stirring...). My husband didn't want a Negroni but it took so long to have the first drink done, that he eventually went for the same to make everyone's lives easier. Once we got our drinks they had to be taken back as there was no orange. You still thought it appropriate to charge us €36 for the two drinks. That seemed ridiculous. While we were having our drinks we were brought some amuse bouche. They were lovely, but being at a low table with no napkin, it was a bit of an adventure. We didn't know if by this time or table was ready, and there was no evidence we would be ever showed to it, so we chanced it and left the bar for the restaurant. Luckily, there was a table, but nobody bothered to let us know anything. We went to dinner and decided to go for the tasting menu, which offer a fixed starter and dessert and only one choice for the main between two dishes. We both went for one but we then got told that that was finished. The waiter didn't speak any English so communication was difficult. We were surprised we had not been told *before* ordering. Anyway, we went for what the alternative was, which sadly was some poorly-assembled flavourless turkey. We ordered the wine and the wine of our choice was not available. We were surprised to say the list. No apology. We were suggested another wine, which was eventually more expensive. And that was it... We didn't feel cared for throughout the meal, it was... Plain. Salt is not the answer to everything. I know businesses rely, partly, on feedback and I know that every business may have a night "off". So I contacted the hotel with pretty much this review and offered the opportunity to make things right. Beyond some tepid words of apology, I was asked to go back and give them another chance. That was it. I am not sure what kind of fool they think I am. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice... Why on earth would I go back to an over priced restaurant which offered not-great food, poor service (and questionable floor cleaning)? This is not the way to run a successful business. Owning a pretty location may bring you business, the poor experience will deny *repeated* business.

This was the second time we stayed at Chateau de Sully and we will come back! This is not the Ritz-Carlton but it's a very nice hotel located in a great area near Bayeux and the beaches of Normandy. I mention the Ritz-Carlton only because one obnoxious guest (American - I am sorry to say) kept loudly complaining about everything during our stay as if this was supposed to be the Ritz-Carlton... The rooms are clean and comfortable. The staff is very friendly. The restaurant serves a good breakfast and a very good dinner. The quiet bar is very nice for a late night drink. The grounds are beautiful. Thank you for a memorable stay.

We've stayed twice at Chateau de Sully and loved every minute of it. The staff were fantastic and the Restaurant was incredible with the most delicious food. We will definitely be back.

We stayed at the chateau for two nights and thoroughly enjoyed our romantic getaway. It is just a few minutes drive from the quaint historic town of Bayeux. The staff was absolutely wonderful! We were traveling around France and the British Isles for three weeks, so we had several heavy suitcases. They held our luggage when we arrived early and then personally carried all of our luggage to our room that was located in a separate building across the property so it was there waiting for us when we returned from site seeing. The staff at the front desk made us feel welcome, gave us a tour of where we were staying, helped us get transportation to and from the chateau, made dinner reservations for us, and provided wonderful food and bar service. Yes, the chateau was dated, but that added to its history and charm. We thoroughly enjoyed a long, relaxing and exquisite dinner at the on site restaurant and the breakfast buffet was even better than described, with a large variety of food and drink options. We did not have time to enjoy the pool and spa because we spent our days out exploring the Normandy region, but we do hope we can return someday and spend more time at the chateau relaxing and enjoying its amenities. Thank you for making our anniversary trip even more special!

Spent one night, wined and dinned, fab food, great service, very charming, pool and sauna added bonus. Would highly recommend for an evening away.

Beautiful site. Extraordinary food. I loved my compact but charming room - I had everything I could ask for. Elegant grounds to wander. Loved the dovecotes. Peaceful and quiet. So many birds singing in the evening. I wish I'd stayed longer to use the pool. (the chef is GREAT)

This could rate as one of the greatest hotel disappointments ever….||I normally don’t write hotel reviews, but given how bad this was I feel obliged to warn others to avoid this place.|(I entirely agree with the brilliantly made points by NYC7002 in the similarly rated review below, which I only wish I’d seen before we went!)||My husband booked us to stay here for 4 nights to visit D Day sites as family during half term.|It wasn’t his first choice but given our dates were so close to the D-Day 80th anniversary events most places were booked up. |We should have realised why this one wasn’t….||We had a “suite” and our two boys (10 & 12) had a double room.|How a large room with a small walk in “cupboard” area to the side (a rail on wheels & a badly placed dressing table) classifies as a suite is ….a mystery.||The mattress didn’t fit the bed. The decoration was appalling. The bathroom was an embarrassment (disastrous grout, gaps to the floor, stains in the loo, serious lack of cleanliness, see photos) There wasn’t even a full length mirror.||The lighting in the boys room was a joke. Even the receptionist who showed us the room seemed surprised by how dark it was with “all” the lights turned on.|There was also a mystery “spray” up one of the walls – they thought it was hilarious to guess what the stains were, but I was horrified.||The Nuxe Miel liquid soap dispenser in the bath/shower didn’t work which I pointed out on day 2; it was never fixed. The receptionist seemed to sneer when I asked if it could be.||It is situated right to the side of a main road, so if you dare to sleep with your windows open you are in for a noisy night.|If that doesn’t keep you awake then if you are as unfortunate as we were to have a weak-bladdered-Heffalump sleeping in the floor above you, you will hear every step as they pound their way to the bathroom throughout the night. There is no form of sound proofing whatsoever.||Details such as the pen and paper in the room looked more like they had been left by a previous guest, rather than deliberately put there. And obviously any attentiveness such as checking the pen actually worked was considered too much.||We decided to have a glass of wine and a cheese plate having returned from dinner one evening. The cheese plate presentation was on a par with the bed making; utterly substandard and clearly done by someone who just didn’t give a damn.||A lovely lady occasionally appeared at breakfast, but was the only member of staff we encountered who smiled. ||Given the unimpressive level of breakfast (I suspect the croissants come out of packets and the congealed scrambled eggs would likely have been rejected by a starving animal) we decided to avoid eating dinner here at all costs – instead chose to go either into Bayeux or Port en Bessin down the road.||The garden area is lovely and we decided to sit out in the deckchairs to take advantage of a brief spell of sunshine; only to find that every single one had bird poo on it. |The birds had clearly taken exacting their duty far more seriously than the largely non-existent staff.||To add salt to the wound it is HEINOUSLY overpriced for what it is. (Luckily for them, we had already left when my husband told me what the bill was or I would’ve turned around and asked for some money back).|Had I known breakfast would be supplementary to the criminal room charge I would have escaped to a local cafe each morning without a doubt.||It’s basic Holiday Inn level, at best, concealed within a deceptively lovely exterior.||It needs someone to come in & take over to throw some money at it because given the exterior it could be SO much better. |It’s been done on a shoe string of a budget and it shows.||All in all - I advise you to stay anywhere else you can, just NOT here.

Yelp
Chateau de Sully was my first Michelin star restaurant experience and it did not disappoint. My husband and I decided to order off the a la carte menu and both chose the Normand filet of beef with aioli sauce, onion and sage juice, leaves cabbage with pureed potatoes. For dessert, my husband opted for the chocolate in butter cream, on a roll-cake, ice cream and nougatine while I chose the candied rhubarb in law temperature, ginger and lime whipped cream, pepper shortbread, rhubarb juice ice cream. There were several smaller courses brought out before and after our desserts and even after dessert. Everything was delicious and the service was impeccable. Our table overlooked the garden in the back and was beautiful. 5 stars.

Yelp
A beautiful location and dining room are just the beginning. Dining here is an experience. The service was so courteous and professional. Our wait staff was extremely helpful and accommodating. And the food! Incredible. I always suggest the prix fixe menu, as to sample as much as possible from the chef. Not one bad bite. Château Sully had the best cheese selection of anywhere we ate in France and the Amuse-Bouche was always a satisfying surprise. Best meal we had in Normandy. Don't hesitate to come here, it's Michelin star is well deserved.
