"They may have moved from Chinatown to Brossard, but the folks at Imperial are still committed to preserving Cantonese Lunar New Year traditions. This year they’re making rice, taro, and radish cake and have just rebooted their Hong Kong-style barbecue operation. Imperial’s version of the classic poon choi big pot is loaded with abalone, shrimp, shrimp balls, fish maw, soy sauce chicken, char siu, roast duck, roast pork, lotus root, turnip, tofu, shiitake, and broccoli; it’s enough to feed four to six. "Slated to open at 8245 Taschereau Boulevard in Brossard in September, the new Impérial location — whose signage already graces the Taschereau Boulevard strip mall — was originally intended as a second location but is now likely to become the restaurant’s South Shore home. I note that an “incredibly slow” renovation process has made pinning down an exact debut date difficult; the owners initially planned to move their entire Chinatown staff to the South Shore venture, though that may change since the original location can remain open longer. The new space is described as slightly smaller but “definitely prettier” and a “nicer venue for weddings and parties,” and it will join other Chinese restaurants in Brossard such as La Maison Kam Fung, Papa Jackie, and Maison Sai Yen." - Valerie Silva
"Perched high atop the Swatow building on lower St-Laurent, Imperial serves dim sum with a view right across to Montreal’s beautiful City Hall — that’s if you can take your eyes off the kindly ladies purveying the metal carts laden with Imperial’s signature square dim sum steamers. It’s worth the wait for Imperial’s deep-fried squid and the har gow steamed shrimp dumplings: the thin, translucent rice flour wrappings are always the measure of a well-made morsel. Imperial’s lotus leaf with sticky rice (lo mai gai), snug parcels with tiny bits of meat and vegetables nestled inside, are another item to seek out.
