"Run by the same family behind nearby counter-service joint Coco Rico (also on the Main), Jano provides more of a homey, sit-down dining experience. It’s well-known for plating an exquisite bird, but if you want to diversify your protein, sardines, squid, rabbit, lamb chops, and spare ribs all get the charcoal grill treatment, too." - Valerie Silva

"One of the oldest Portuguese operations in town on this list, Jano has been in business since 1974. It’s a no-frills restaurant with food of exceptional quality, accompanied by squeeze bottles of mayonnaise and all. Worth a visit for both its surf and its turf." - JP Karwacki

We made a quick stop on a rainy day in the middle of the mural festival for some Portuguese food at Restaurant Jano. While we watched the Formula 1 race, we were delighted by a delicious meal of: - Bifana: A delicious, well-cooked, and seasoned pork steak sandwich, served with a side of fries and Portuguese salad. - Tender, exquisitely prepared quarter chicken leg. We couldn't leave without trying Natas, of course, and we loved the glorious little tarts.

Warmly decorated portuguese restaurant. It didn't look very busy on Friday night, service was quick. We got garlic shrimp appetizer and it was good, the grilled calamari didn't taste much, the rib steak although big was however bland and tasted like not marinated at all. Maybe that's how portuguese steak is supposed to be but we didn't like it at all, even with the spicy sauce. Overall it seems a bit overpriced.

I came here after watching a video suggesting to visit this restaurant. As I entered, we got seated right away. The place had a good amount of locals dining in. The service was great at the beginning but after food was served it was pretty slow. It took a while for us to get the bill as there was only 2 waiters. We got the half leg with fries and the combo w chicken & pork. You get a salad and the dressing was amazing! I got the soup, it was good and different. Also ordered, the sangria (tasted like juice), flan (definitely not my favorite - it was just too bitter).

My experience Location in downtown is perfect. However, parking is an issue 😑 Decorations and layout, for me , are cozy and romantic. Place can fit a number of small to medium groups. The Washroom 🚻 requires an upgrade. I couldn't find warm water to wash my hands Cleanliness is acceptable within expectations Service is an excellent, friendly environment. Staff know how to explain the ingredients in both languages. With fully respectful 🙏 (thanks guys). The food is really delicious 😋 😍 👌 I loved ❤️ 😍 💖 it a lot. And rich, I loved the Portugal 🇵🇹 potatoes 🥔 😋 The price is affordable and reasonable. Conclusion, I liked 👍 it a lot and for sure if I visit Montreal, I will visit them again.

We decided on a last-minute meal of chicken and salad, and this place didn't disappoint. We were seated quickly. The grilled chicken roasted to pretty perfect, not dry, the fries were crispy and delicious, the warm bread crunchy and although the salad had a bit too much vinegar, still tasty. And that hot spice tho! While the food was tasty , our waiter was rude, slow, and inattentive. Had to ask for water ,utensils and the bill , 2x’s. Fortunately, another younger waiter who brought our food , provided excellent service with a smile. Overall, imo, this was one of the two best fast food Portuguese chicken in Montreal. Coco Rico being the other.

I give it a 3.5. The food was tasty especially on the grill. The service was very friendly but was clearly understaffed as the night went on. We had to call our waiter for dessert after waiting for more than 20 minutes. We got the calamari and a platter of meat to share for two. The platter of meat you had a choice of 5 meats and/or seafood. We got the rabbit, quail, lamb, chicken and ribs. They were all grilled. The meat was cooled very well but they all tasted the same at the end. There weren't much spices or anything. The platter came with a salad each and fries. The calamari was excellent. It was perfectly cooked as it melted in your mouth while still having a little bit of a chew. It also came with a salad and fries but you could upgrade them for Portuguese chips for an extra 2$. The desserts were nice but a bit expensive especially the flan caramel. It looked like someone took a bite of my portion. Their natas were delicious. Crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. Overall, the food was good and we spent a good evening there. There were a few hiccups but nothing major.

The chicken leg is hands down the best I’ve had - always so tender and tasty! If you haven’t tried Portuguese chicken, this is definitely the place to go. You also definitely need to get a Nata dessert to top it all off - they’re not too heavy and just the right amount of custardy yumminess! :)
