When you sit down for dinner after a delightful walk on a perfect sunny day, on a path along a lake surrounded by vibrant autumn colors of the trees on the hills, creating a serene atmosphere, and you find yourself at the charming Hotel Kingsley restaurant in the enchanting section of old Kingston, New York, and as Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Some Velvet Morning" plays softly in the background, you're in a tranquil state of mind, eagerly anticipating your meal without overly scrutinizing the food.
First and foremost, it's important to clarify that this is not a hotel restaurant in the negative sense. It's a beautiful restaurant situated within a lovely hotel building, and it strives for excellence. This commitment is evident in the menu, which offers a concise selection of dishes that appear promising and above average. For example, the "wild escargot" appetizer, while bearing the name, doesn't resemble the traditional French preparation, aside from the dish name. A more accurate name for this dish would be "wild snails," but it appears the management chose the more approachable name of "Escargot." This might be slightly misleading if you expect the traditional French Escargot dish.
The generously served crusty bread with burrata was excellent and set a positive tone. The "wild" escargot appetizer was good, though not outstanding. The Tagine chickpeas were disappointing. Regrettably, the Hake fish, served with small clams and pieces of calamari in a heavily salty broth, tasted like chewy, overly salted chunks of rubber. I managed to finish it with the help of some bread to balance the saltiness, but my wife couldn't even complete her dish, which was disappointing.
The Wall St salad (Kale + with Gorgonzola) was enjoyable, and the french fries, served with plain ketchup (although perhaps a more exotic dipping sauce could be offered), were satisfactory. The apple tart, resembling tarte Tatin and served with ice cream, was decent but didn't leave a lasting impression.
In the end, the bill felt somewhat high relative to the quality and quantity of the food. However, if taste and value aren't your top priorities, the pleasant ambiance and the captivating background music can be reasons to spend an evening there. It might be wise to order sparingly to avoid disappointment if you're concerned about overspending on food that's less than excellent.
