These African Safari Lodges Offer High-end Cuisine With a Focus on Local Ingredients

"Situated on the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, the intimate dining room juxtaposes a jet-black counter and synchronized chef service with sweeping views of red soil and roaming wildlife. The kitchen applies a Noma-inspired tasting-menu sensibility to locally sourced, inventive dishes—highlights include savory lamington cakes flavored with biltong, a squash–chile–spekboom salad, and preparations featuring preserved peaches—while founder Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen emphasizes rare regional ingredients and fresh local products to elevate traditional safari fare into contemporary fine dining." - Mary Holland Mary Holland Mary Holland is a writer and editor based in New York. 3 African Chefs Bringing Their Food to the Global Stage

"Located within a large private wildlife reserve in the Kalahari, this restaurant reflects the harsh, arid landscape through a menu built on native ingredients like tsama melons, balsam pear, and preserved pumpkins, and by using preservation techniques such as curing to extend shelf life. Opened in 2021 as a return-to-roots project, the cuisine emphasizes regional provenance and the chef’s heritage, translating the underexplored plains’ flavors into a thoughtful, terroir-driven dining experience." - Alicia Erickson

In-Depth Review of Loapi Tented Camp in South Africa - AFAR

"Housed in a 100-year-old farmhouse on the reserve, this celebrated restaurant is the work of chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen—who earned a Michelin star for his restaurant in Nice—and delivers a world-class dining experience rooted in traditional South African cuisine and hyper-local, often foraged, ingredients. Dinners here are framed as a highlight for guests, combining rustic charm with refined, creative tasting menus that showcase produce sourced from the reserve and surrounding region." - AFAR

I Brought My Baby on an African Safari — Here's What I Learned on the Adventure of a Lifetime

"A surprising, high-end dining experience from a Michelin-starred South African chef that left fellow diners calling it the “James Bond of dining experiences.” It’s presented as a culinary highlight that families can enjoy when childcare is available, offering an adventurous, memorable meal that contrasts with the rustic bush context." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Inside Klein Jan, Tswalu Kalahari Reserve's New Restaurant in South Africa

"Set in a remote Kalahari game reserve, this restaurant feels like a cinematic discovery: diners begin with drinks and hors d'oeuvres on the terrace of a century-old farmhouse, pass through an antique-filled one-room house and down a spiral staircase to an underground brick cellar stocked with honey, produce and pickles, then emerge into a lofty dining room cut into the hillside that frames an arrestingly still desert landscape. Led by Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen — a South African chef who earned a Michelin star while based in France — the menu reimagines his Afrikaans grandmother’s Dutch-influenced farm cooking, from mieliepap presented as fritters to a vegetarian bobotie made with lentils, and highlights hyperregional ingredients such as wild tsama melons and homemade cheeses sourced locally despite the arid surroundings. The theatrical progression of spaces, refined service (white-linen tables, crystal glasses) and emphasis on storytelling make for an unexpectedly luxurious, homecoming-style dining experience in a far-flung safari setting." - Mary Holland Mary Holland Mary Holland is a writer and editor based in New York. The attention to detail is what captured me most. Jan's ability to turn the local fauna and flora into a culinary experience is magical. He also weaves history and people into his dishes. The ambiance and setting is absolutely amazing!

I was fortunate enough to experience the dining adventure that is Klein Jan at Tswalu in the middle of the Kalahari desert. I don't want to spoil the experience for others, but I will say it is absolutely worthwhile to visit this place if you appreciate the culinary arts. Each course is unique and you are taken on a true culinary journey starting with your arrival outside of the first building all the way through the final course. It was truly the experience of a lifetime.

There is simply no better dining experience in South Africa. I say experience because this goes VASTLY beyond just the food. Yes the food is exquisite, superbly presented, conceptually brilliant and beautifully executed, but your time at Klein Jan goes way beyond just the food. This is theater through food. Every touch point has been well thought through and the team come across as genuinely proud of what they've accomplished while being thrilled to share it with you. I purposefully do not want to say too much about the experience, going in blind is the best way to enjoy it. Just know that you will be delighted and mesmerized!

A dream come true, and to experience the collaboration between Jan and Kobus from Wolfgat, made it even more special. We were treated like royalty and didn't want the experience to come to and end. The evening lasted nearly 4 hours full of bliss and excitement. The food, service, ambiance and interaction with Jan and Kobus was something we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

Should be 3⭐, but Michelin ones. You will come for "The Food" and "The Experience" but you'll leave with so much more: The beauty, the place, the people, the sky, the openness, the harshness, the sand and the stars. Of course the food is amazing, out of this world and absolutely mind blowing but that's not why you should visit this extraordinary place. It is truly an unforgettable experience and well worth all the travel, time and expense - mostly because of the wonderful people you will meet, both at the restaurant and on your journey there and back. If you are reading this and contemplating going, just do it.

It wasn't just a meal at a restaurant, it was a complete dining experience! One of the best, if not the best I've ever had! Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen is a culinary and creative genius who deserves his Michelin star. Every aspect of the dining experience represents a part of him, as he was inspired by his days learning to cook with his Grandmother growing up in South Africa. Being able to dine here as part of our stay at Tswalu was a real treat!

Exceptional experience. We've been to Jan in Nice and we have to say that Klein Jan matched the Michelin restaurant in every way

The entire experience is impeccably crafted. A decor that exudes a level of sophistication rarely seen in modern dining. The technical craftsmanship of weaving locally sourced sustainable ingredients, with exceptional service and an ambience with integrity and passion make this definitely worth writing about. 10/10 and beyond all your expectations. Thank you for the privilege of being a diner.♥️
