Beaulieu sur Dordogne is a beautiful town on the banks of the river Dordogne in SouthWest France. The Hotel Le Turenne offers a restaurant and a bistro. For lunch we selected the bistro
The standard three course menu was 18 Euros and it changes daily, although there is no choice each day. This day's menu was Salade Paysanne, Boeuf en cocotte and Tarte au citron. The salade paysanne surprised me as it contained some huge prawns (shrimp) - I don't think a country 'paysanne' would usually add prawns to salad, but it was very nicely dressed and was plenty for a starter. The beef steak was nicely cooked and served in a small cast iron casserole with a tomato sauce, grilled red pepper and crushed potatoes with olive oil and parsley. It was very tasty but not hugely exciting. Finally the tarte au citron was delicious. We chose to accompany our meal with a glass of Valencay red wine, which was served at exactly the right temperature and had lovely peppery notes to it.
The decor is modern and bright in the bistro, classic and classy in the restaurant, there is an outside terrace for summer dining, but we often avoid these in France now as they are usually shrouded in smoke since fumeurs are forbidden inside.
The waiting staff were pleasant, friendly, discreet but maybe a little deodorant wouldn't have gone amiss!! ;-(
