"The exquisite Weeshuis Hotel is housed in THE landmark edifice of the historic city of Gouda. The chic COCO champagne bar is the perfect spot to sample a lavish breakfast, a casual lunch, a wickedly tempting tea or a glass of champagne! Oozing with character, thanks to historic vaults, fresh bouquets of flowers and LIZZ’s signature luxury, you can expect a global experience in the capable hands of gifted Remco Kuijpers. The seasoned chef unveils his culinary sensitivity and flawless technique. Spices and subtle Asian acidity add a new dimension to first-class Dutch produce. He embarks you on a fascinating and occasionally amusing journey. For example, sweetbread acquires a new range of nuances thanks to an clever blend of sherry, umeboshi plums, cumin, sakura vinegar, shiso and pumpkin. High-flying craftsmanship that is rich in surprises, originality and expression without falling into the trap of cloying or staid – an instinctive sense of balance pervades every dish. One final word for the excellent service, attentive yet not fawning and for the mind-blowing wine-food pairing suggestions." - Michelin Inspector

I can barely remember such a terrible ratio between price and quality at a Michelin restaurant. First dish which was a fish tartare was cut in such huge chunks, and was so chewy, that is couldn't really bring any joy Second dish was a tuna with 'rauwkost' with supermarket quality steamed bean and carrot. I think at a premium sushi restaurant this is served as a sashimi dish for maybe 6€ per dish? Are you sure you want to include it into a star menu? There is 0 creativity in this. Main was tasty (poultry), cheese selection was great but again dessert really disappointed in how small it was. Flavors of these three were on point but there is no way they could justify the price of 110€ per person as ingredients strike me as bland and cheap. Besides our waiter almost dropped a coffee on one of us and mumbled something which was not an apology. The rest of the waiters were really professional and our sommelier did it really well, but nothing will justify absolutely disappointung flavors, combinations that did not even surprise nor please. I will definitely never come back here because even the friandises managed to disappoint which they never really do...

Delicious food in a very beautiful setting. Lizz has absolutely earned its Michelin star. We have eaten here several times and the menu has been innovative and delicious each time. Service is excellent and the sommelier very knowledgeable and suggested different wines according to our taste. We will continue to return.

We were in COCO, the lunch option but also that was fabulous. Good food, good wine and very friendly staff

We had dinner there yesterday night to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. We were really looking forward to a magical evening, but sadly that is not what we got. Pros: - good non-alcoholic drink pairings - the servers were very friendly - there was a card on the table to congratulate us with a personal note - the food was nice Cons: - we were rushed between courses, we couldn't even finish the accompanying drinks before the next plate was already served. At one point we had two drinks each on the table + water. - we were at the worst table of the place, which was in the corner of the entrance corridor, with no ambiance, and not even part of the restaurant. In the photo below you can see where the plants and the lights are, that is where the restaurant begins. It ruined the night. I am very sad because they knew it was our first anniversary, but still we were assigned the worst table, as they knew because the servers said they had had complaints about this table beofre. To be honest, if we hadn't pre-booked it with the hotel, we would have left. It was a sad sad experience that I would not recommend to anyone, unless they can make 100% sure that they aren't seating in the corridor. We also tried to discuss with the staff and while they said were sorry to hear, they couldn't do anything other than letting us change tables if one became free, which of course it didn't. And then letting us seat in the lounge between the restaurant and hotel for an end of dinner coffee. It really isn't what you would expect of a Michelin star restaurant. We also brought it up to the hotel this morning but that is a separate review.

The experience was exceptional, with refined, original and incredibly tasty dishes, some of which we will remember for a long time. The atmosphere and service were impeccable, and the value for money was excellent for the meal, which I would have more expected from a 2-star Michelin restaurant than from a 1-star one. The only reproach I would make is the surcharge for the water and the two slices of bread that were overpriced. Though this is common practice in the Netherlands, I felt this was not worthy of such a fine establishment.

Great restaurant located in a stunning hotel. Food is excellent and prepared by a chef with 1* Michelin experience. Wine pairing was excellent, with good explanations by the sommelier. Service was good and flawless. Will probably be included in the Michelin guide soon, might even get a star within 2-3 years.

Unfortunately I was disappointed, the opening dish was very well designed but with so powerful tastes that felt just too much. The first dish was wonderful - some kind of fish with delicate decoration and dressing. And then it got really bad- the second dish was tuna with heavy dressing containing huge amounts of cumin- nothing could be tasted worse. The main dish was a mushroom covered with catchup- just impossible. The cheeses were delicious though. I guess that the manager should have come and ask use about those dishes that we gave back- but he or she didn’t. Someone in the Michelin went to far. Sorry.

We had a 4 course dinner yesterday at Lizz. We were surprised by the quality of the food. The tastes were overpowering and aggressive - starting with the amuse bites, with a sweet cooky coupled with cheese and an asian flavour which was not pleasant at all. Then a nice fish tartare , but the tuna again had overpowering flavours of sweet beetroots and cumin. This was not balanced or subtle at all. The main dish we actually sent back to the kitchen, which we never do. Again, overpowering flavours of ketchup and spiced. We were not charged for this, however it seemed strange that no one of the kitchen stuff spoke to us. We did comment about the Tuna dish to the waiter and them returned a main dish, it would have been nice to have someone talk to us, especially since we paid 200 Euros for this meal, which is not easy for everyone
