Montreal’s Best Steakhouses and Grill Restaurants for Surf and Turf | Eater Montreal

"While it may tout a bull’s head for its logo, Méchant Boeuf is one of those steakhouses that has moved beyond the traditional. Think 5 à 7 deals, a raw bar, and burgers in addition to their beefy cuts. One thing’s for sure: It’s a solid bet for a real plate of steak and eggs." - JP Karwacki

Méchant Boeuf is a very good steakhouse. The staff is polite and accommodating, we came for a birthday and were not disappointed. Food quality is exquisite, special shout out to our waitress. The wait time for the tomahawk steak was a bit long, around an hour, but at the end, it was well worth it. If you’re looking for a unique experience in the heart of Montreal, this restaurant offers exactly the type of gastronomic getaway you’d expect at the Old Port. Definitely one of the better steaks I’ve ever had. The prices are steep and some portions are relatively smaller (the sea food platter in particular) which some might view it as a downside, but overall still remains an intriguing spot in the heart of the Vieux Port

Google
Genuine perfection. I absolutely adored this entire experience and could not have more positive words to describe it! Delicious food, outstanding service, and amazing atmosphere. Certainly pay this place a visit, you will NOT regret it.

Google
Marie-Joelle was absolutely amazing! She recommended cocktails for us and we loved the beef tartar and fresh oysters she recommended. She made the BEST moscow mule we've ever had. Her positive attitude and warm smile made our night memorable. We spent the night sitting at the bar because the dining room seemed dim without her personality lighting the way. You're very lucky to have her. We are first time guests at the hotel and we will come back tomorrow for another cocktial just to see her again. We had a wonderful time here!

Google
1. Waiting more than 1:30-2h for our food despite our server apologizing 2. Offered us 2 deserts for 4 people without even giving us a choice. The desert was so stale.. 3. Food was 1.5 star at best. Both steaks were almost cold, didn’t taste anything. Both tartares were mid at best. 4. Onion soup was cold

Food was stellar, freshly prepared and arrived in a timely manner, exactly how we ordered. From the appetizer to the main, everything was well described by our servers, who paid close attention to dietary needs, and were very quick to refill our drinks. It was a great overall experience and would absolutely go again when we're in the mood for a steak dinner.

Google
What an experience! Walter was our server. We were last to leave and met one of the chefs and bus-boy at evening end. So gracious. We enjoyed every course. From oysters and beef carpaccio to Filet mignon and Ribeye. Even the sautéed spinach was lovely. I want to pay tribute to the excellent kitchen. You are the pillars that hold up this beautiful restaurant. The ambience is rich, dark and comforting. The food is prepared with care and attention. I’m not sure who prepared our Negronis but they were delicious. I am a coffee aficionado and the espresso at the end was perfect. Thank you!!

Google
Food was amazing! The service is exemplary, but slow at first. Definitely would recommend. Valter our server was very helpful and attentive. Try their mashed potatoes too, it’s soooo good. We didn’t have to wait for our food that long. All in all worth the price you pay for.

Google
We had the pleasure of dining at Mechant Boeuf on Saturday evening during the Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend, and absolutely LOVED it. We ordered the filet mignon and NY strip loin and our steaks were cooked & seasoned to perfection. One of the best steaks we’ve had. Our drinks were also amazing, as was the service. Highly recommended if you’re in the Old Montreal area.

Yelp
This was a happy find! We were originally looking for a cocktail bar that had great reviews on Google but when we got there, it was closed that day. We looked for the next best place to have drinks and dinner and we found this great place! The perfect place to have a date night, family night, or fine dine on your own. There was a variety of clientele on this particular night so it was buzzing. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant near the window which we liked. We ordered a nice bottle of Cab Franc, beef tartare, and a filet Mignon. Our server was great with recommendations and suggestions. Everything was fresh and well put together. The flavors of the beef tartare were rich and well crafted. The filet Mignon, was perfectly cooked to medium rare and the side dishes were just phenomenal. I have never had mashed potatoes with an egg yolk on top. I was pleasantly surprised at the flavor that adds to the dish! Needless to say, we had a great meal and experience!

Yelp
A beautiful street-side restaurant right in old Montreal. A meat focused menu with many pretty reasonable choices. The ambiance was perfect for a nice date night.

Yelp
This restaurant is located on downtown of Montreal, our first night to arrive. They have open windows that I like. The host found a spot for us with a baby high chair that could seat in. When we arrived, it was still a restaurant style, then in the middle of our meal, it changed to bar style that louder music and turned off some lights, but still enjoyable. We had a Seafood Tagliatelle ($36), which includes mussels, scallops, shrimps, squid with Parmesan. But it didn't have scallops inside, when I asked the server, she asked the host to talk to me, he didn't know why, so he took it to the kitchen and asked the cook, he came back to me said there was no scallops at this moment. Ah?! Ok?! I hadn't got informed before and after, except I asked. I was a bit unhappy with the service. But they made a new one for me and on the house. And we had Flank Steak 7oz ($38), which it was medium cooked with fries. It was juicy, but not bloody, just a little pink that we like. Other than we didn't get informed about my noodles missing scallops, I was a bit confused why the server asked the host or manager to handle the complaint instead of dealing with it first. Overall, it's pretty enjoyable and great food.

Yelp
Wonderful. I was in Montreal for Christmas. Beautiful atmosphere. This place you can bring a date or have a nice dinner with the family. Sat at the bar. Huge wine selection. Food was amazing. The Cesar salad was huge, definitely a shareable salad. The Tuna tartar was delicious, but the veggies were a show stopper. Couldn't stop thinking about the veggies throughout my trip. The service was spectacular! Everyone was friendly and accommodating. 10/10 I will be back when I visit Montreal again.

Yelp
It's Happening Gourmand month, on a Saturday night, the place is packed. We could not be served in the beginning by our waitress, the busboy took care of us. He was very amiable. Post orders, it took very long time to get any of our dishes. When the waitress took over after the first service, the service dropped a little notch down. Appetizer: garlic spinach soup 5/5, cod fritters 4/5 (more potatoes than fish). Main dishes: lobster risotto: 1/5 (unevenly cooked, after taste had sand feeling), steak and fries: 3/5 (unevenly seasoned, one side more salty) desert: brookie and profiteroles:5/5. Overall the experience was average.

Yelp
This review is strictly on their unacceptable reservation practice, which did not afford me the opportunity to try the restaurant. Here are the facts of my experience: I made a reservation on line 5 days in advance and received confirmation on line. Two days before the reservation I received a voice mail to confirm the reservation. I was in meetings all days but called at the end of the day, only to be told my reservation has been forfeited since I hadn't called earlier. The receptionist claimed she had also called the prior day but from a phone without caller ID and without leaving a message. Just a warning not to expect this establishment to honor a reservation.

Yelp
Last minute, perfect reservation. Great menu from their signature cocktail list to the selection of main dishes, there's something for everyone. Easily found in the Vieux Port, the service, atmosphere, and delicious food will make you feel comfortable and very satisfied. François was very attentive and happy to answer any questions. Thanks to everyone who played a part in my relaxing evening. I'll be back for beef.....

Yelp
Decor here is perfect for old port with a warm stone wall and wood combination. Our bartender was a little rushed but was as attentive as could be expected given how busy she was. Drinks were delicious with a nice spin on a classic espresso martini. As someone who isn't a fan of the creamy espresso martini, I really enjoyed how smooth the l'espresso monkey was while not relying on cream to make the cocktail sweet. The tartare was something special. It was an unusually large portion and the seasoning was delicious without distracting from the unadulterated raw salmon flavor. Last but not least, I think I may be forever chasing snail dishes after these raw whelks which were a steal at $10.

Yelp
We sat at the bar waiting for a table and ended up staying there for dinner because we loved the bartenders so much! Amazing service and amazing drinks. The passion fruit margarita wasn't on the menu but I asked for something fruity and sweet and it was perfect!! The Greek salad was amazing!!! Loved the Kalamata olive pure. Would definitely be back! My husband had the steak and loved it as well.

Yelp
We went during the yearly happening Gourmand where we pay a fixed price for a table d'hôte. Price was good (42$) for 6 fresh oysters appetizer, 7-oz steak and a chocolate/hazelnut cake. The service was longer than usual though. There was also a kid's menu which is pricier.

Yelp
We had a great experience here. Our server Sarah was wonderful and attentive. We started with a Caesar salad and Poutine with Brisket. Fantastic food and ideal portions for sharing. The Salmon was perfect as was the Pork chop. The ambiance is warm and inviting. Great value for the price!!

Yelp
A little something about our dinner experience on Sunday, June 16, 2024: Bad quality rib eye, seafood dish missing scallops, multiple items missing off the menu, slow service, and the list goes on.

Gabriela C.

Yelp
Very displeased with this establishment. The server was very unprofessional. However I do have to say, Colton, whom helped our server was amazing. The drinks were amazing, but the food itself? Very disappointing. Would not go back. The server did not bring out multiple things. Had it not been for Colton, our sides would've not made it to our table, nor our drinks.

Yelp
TL;DR lovely host(ess), kind service staff, great food, stiff drinks, and we closed the place down. My group of four visiting Montreal from NYC for the weekend made a dinner reservation here for Thursday evening. We got cocktails nearby while we waited, and then walked on over. I'd already interacted with the host(ess) when we popped in to put our name down for reservations, and she was fantastic. When we made our way back, I was first while the rest of the crew were paying the tab for drinks nearby. The host(ess) sat me, and we made jokes together that I'd lost my friends somewhere. There was initially some confusion, I think, as to who was going to serve us, as initially the kind host(ess) brought me/us 4 menus, and then another young gentleman (named Jerome, but I didn't find out til later) came over with menus and jokingly mused "oh, someone else beat me to you!" - we smiled at one another, laughed, and he walked away while I waited for my group. After my group arrived, I assume that since Jerome thought someone else beat him to serving our table, no one was actually aware that we didn't have a server... until another gentleman noticed us (probably mostly me... lol) was hungrily looking around for someone to flag down to place drink and food orders with. His name was Alex, and he came over and said he'd be helping sort us out while our server was activated to serve our table. We placed our drink orders with Alex, and then Jerome came over and introduced himself -- very nice fella, and together they got our drink orders in. Jerome came back to take our food orders and brought our drinks, and we ordered and sipped. Drinks were delicious. Jerome later brought out our food, which was absolutely perfect and as ordered. Our group closed the place down, and we got to know Jerome a little bit on a personal level -- he is kind, pleasant, accommodating, and just an overall very helpful, friendly, nice guy. Jerome, if you have the opportunity to read this, good luck with your final semester and I hope you make it into Vet School if that's what you decide to do! Host(ess), if you have the opportunity to read this, I love your style, your hair, your ink, and your disposition. It was so great meeting you. See you again soon I hope.

Yelp
The place is nicely decorated. The service was good but slow due to a big group of people next to us. The food is good and reasonable.

Yelp
Now I get the low reviews and didn't see them coming! Until now. And looks are deceiving. Hubby had Méchant targeted since the last 2 times we've spent Holidays here- and now his dreams became reality. I mean...I even had to comb through their menu real close for either Vegetarian dishes or Seafood- both that Méchant offers for a Steakhouse. So ok...what could be wrong??? 8:30 Open Table reservations for a Friday night- and were seated quick. DJ was letting loose House beats making for an outrageous night- so far. Place is huge with a Masculine feel- lots of Brick, Rock Wall and Woods. Now you tell me...what else can be wrong??? Well...here goes: Hostess sat us. Took a good 10 minutes for our server to come to our table. Placed drinks right away. Didn't get them til another 15. Keep going? Méchant is truly buzzing with energy and Mr. DJ kept whipping out those old-school tunes like you don't know. Our server came back and we decided on Tuna Tartare to start...great. He asked for Plates and I went with a Cavatelli/Broccoli Rabe/ Parmesan Ribbons In Cream sauce- MINUS the pork. Mind you, I told him twice- even gestured with my hands that I didn't want any of it. While my husband had the 20oz gargantuan Tomahawk Steak with Haricots Vert and Cheddar Mashed Potatoes. Great. Right? 20 minutes later- no Appetizer but we get our meal. Anyhow, one look at my Cavatelli Plate and real quick, I noticed dark pieces- which aren't Garlic and knew these guys went ahead with the damn pork. Carajo!!! Which I specifically said to our server Joel- not to include and wanted a brand new Plate. I'll give him this much though- he apologize endlessly. He took my Plate and I told hubby to start without me. Here's Joel's breakthrough moment: he put in another glass of Rosé on the house and hubby's Cosmo (first one was sweet, 2nd was weak). 10 minutes later and Joel is personally bringing my dish which he continues to apologize for the first error and honestly, I'm appreciative! So Thank you Joel...again. After that, he was on it like a hawk and continued apologizing. However, hubby's Tomahawk was cooked medium well- when he actually said Medium Rare- twice. That sucker looked so well done- hubby was livid. Quite honestly, my Cavatelli was rich and enjoyed every bite. And that real nice music Mr DJ was pumping? It was all good because by the time we left, he was playing Fela Kuti! Although the music wasn't loud, maybe the low reviews have to do with the music itself and distracting servers not taking orders correctly. Listen- in the end, hubby got this place out of his system. But there's nothing that grinds my gears more than receiving wrong orders or food not cooked accordingly.

Yelp
Amazing tender meat. The service is fantastic. The drinks and food were delicious. Unsure why this wasn't booked on a Friday evening! Definitely come here instead of the other steakhouses around.

Yelp
We were here many years ago. It was right across the street from Saint Sulpice hotel where we stayed. . We had 7:00 reservation. Lovely place. Lively. Our waiter was actually pretty good, until we had some issues. We ordered drinks and some Greek cheese with country bread. Delicious. My wife ordered the pork Milanese. I ordered the wagyu filet. Filet. I also upgraded my side starch. What came out was a lame looking little strip on top of mashed potatoes. Not good. My wife enjoyed her meal. I had a taste. It was good. They tried to make it right. Just have a bite and we will rush you out your steak. It wasn't enjoyable at all. I even gave my wife a nibble. And I love my wife. If you look at a complete strip loin, it was clearly a vein steak. Then the manager brought me out rare slices of yet another strip. I can't do rare anymore. The sent it back. It came out again, this ugly gray. It was not good. Not good at all. Filet. Filet. It's on the menu several ways. How they couldn't figure it out is beyond me. It was a $90:steak. Needless to say, I went home hungry. I did like our waiter. He tried, but he had as much responsibility in this as the manager did. So, to finish this off, a third person came out. Nice young lady. Obviously the other two were done with us. She tried to explain that the steak was taken off the check. As we explained our story a bit, she proceeded to tell us the had no filet that night. Huh. The other thing I found odd was the lack of seafood on the menu. Our dinner at mckiernan's the night before was much better. Going home hungry on a date night never goes well.

Yelp
Beef tartar is yummy. But the $51 steak is a little bit too small, most are veg. Compare the size w the steak, u can see how small portion it is.

Paul E.

Yelp
We had an incredible breakfast, freshest of fruits, fluffy and light pastries and just an incredible breakfast sandwich. The service was incredible and the ambiance was outstanding. The hotel and the restaurant are first class.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
Steak was great. Service was awesome! Had some great wine! The ambiance was nice and classy. I would definitely eat here again!

Yelp
If you are over the age of 22 do not go here. Not the vibe and the food is very whatever and overpriced. Plus the waitstaff do not know how to split a check.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I won a Valentine's Instagram contest for a dinner for 2 people plus a 60$ bottle of wine. The whole experience was valued at 200$. Please note this review is completely based on my dining experience and was not influenced or remunerated for by any staff members. I have never heard of Méchant Boeuf until of this contest win, but I was ecstatic to discover this great spot in old Montreal. This place can be taken as a casual or fancy dine in spot -you pick. During Valentine's day week, the restaurant offered a 3 course meal special for 49$ per person on Feb 14 to 16. For each course there were 3 options except for one option for dessert. As 2 people we were fortunate to try 5 different items. For my 1st course: the highlight was definitely the lobster bisque. I loved the richness in flavours captured in one spoonful. The other option of the beef tartare was also quite nice and very filling. Wasn't mayonnaise based (or at least not heavy on it) -it was a lot for one person. For my 2nd course, I was really impressed by the light yet flavourful notes the saffron pappardelle dish with a seafood medley. The 10oz sirloin steak was also a show stopper with buttered mash potatoes and grilled asparagus. The 3rd course: chocolate cream, yogurt and vanilla mousse, with chocolate, hazelnut crumble, mandarin glaze was a nice finale. I've never had a sweet tooth but this was nice. I would definitely come back here to explore the other menu options. Service is on point and location is a winner!

Yelp
Came here for Bottomless Brunch, and i am happy to say that this is the best bottomless in Montreal after having done every one in the city. The service is SUPER fast (Thanks Joel! We love you) and they leave you the bottles on the table so you can serve yourself. The brunch menu is extensive and has something for everyone. Additionally, i've been here for dinner and happy hour and its also been great with good prices. Would highly recommend! Pictured below is the goat cheese toast.

Yelp
First time here and the restaurant was excellent. Lively atmosphere and super friendly service. I ordered the Méchant Burger with fries and it was delicious. Flavourful and home cut fries well deep fried. Haha. It's located within Old Montreal and pricing is decent with $10-12 appetizers to $60 entree's such as the Tomahawk steaks. Overall great value and be back again soon.

Yelp
We landed up for dinner at this restaurant yesterday, because we wanted to have fresh oysters..but once we placed orders of our drinks, we were told the person who shuck oysters has gone for the day, that was disappointing, since it was only 7:00pm peak dinner time. We replaced our choices with other dishes on the menu, they were ok nothing to great. For dinner we ordered 4 dishes out of which 3 were super disappointing. I ordered pork chop, it was the driest pork chop I have ever eaten, inspite of being fried. My other family members ordered steaks, the meat was dry and not tasty at all. We had a baby with us, so we ordered pasta for him, it was the worst bowl of pasta I have ever tasted. The prices were pretty high, not that the place was cheap. I would NOT recommend this place at all.
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
We had a great dinner. The steak was tender. The service was perfect. The mashed potatoes were delicious. They even had a veggie burger. Will go again.

Yelp
It's the Christmas holidays! Time to find a nice restaurant to enjoy the des festivities! Let's walk to the Christmas themed restaurant opened every Christmas holiday! Oh no! They're closed! We missed it! Let's just try any restaurant then, how about this one? Well we were not disappointed! A bit on the pricey said but you get a nice romantic atmosphere, nice ambiance and great culinary food! I highly recommend this place for couple looking for one on one time together. The food is classic French cuisine with a great selection of alcoholic drinks. If you're ever inn the old port area this place is a must try, you won't regret it! Their burgers are juicy and tender, their boeuf tartare is delicious and well seasoned seasoned. Go ahead, have a bite and let me in now how it was!

Yelp
Came across this place on our trip to Montreal. We were looking for a brunch place and luckily walked into this restaurant. The staff was super friendly and the food was AMAZING!!! I had the chicken and waffles and my husband got the pancakes. Best chicken and waffles I've ever had! I actually was sad when my plate was suddenly empty. My husband devoured his pancakes and he had the same look of sadness when his dish was empty We will def be going back here on our next trip to Montreal. I'm not sure why this place only gets 3.5 stars because it deserves 5 hands down!

A K.

Yelp
I ordered a chicken and shrimp. There must have been 4 shrimps along with 1 chicken breast piece. The flavor was good- the portions were small - Luckily i had eaten in small portions throught the day so i wasnt too hungry. The price is a bit high for just the food but reasonable given its location in Old Montreal. Come here if you want the vibe of Old Montreal and tasty food. Skip it if youre in the mood for a big hearty meal.

Charles C.

Yelp
We received a recommendation from visa concierge and had visited. The restaurant looked very nice and the service at the beginning was very nice. However, it took over 1 hour and 15 mins to receive our food on a Tuesday night at 6:30pm. We had to separately ask for bread because a minor at our table was very hungry. The server and manager came to apologize which was kind, however, it did not change that the food was not there for 1 hour and 15 mins. The rib eye steak and filet mignon was juicy and it tasted good but the temperature of the meat itself was lukewarm, suggesting it was sitting for awhile. The Spicy Italian Sausages Strozzapreti Pasta came not al dente but hard, at times and there were no sausages. Overall, the service was good but the delay really makes it hard for me to give a good review of the restaurant.

Yelp
Walked by this place quite a few times, so finally decided to try it. We ordered fried calamari, beef brisket poutine and vegetarian burger. The calamari was good, the usual - nothing extraordinary. The vegetarian burger was quite interesting because of the thick Smokey feta cheese slice. But I did not enjoy it so much. The brisket was quite average as well. Customer service was great! 3 stars are mostly because of the service. The food, however, was very gastropub like. Nothing special.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I visited for brunch while in Montreal! I rushed him out of the hotel room as brunch is a serious thing here in the states, especially NY. We walked in expecting to have a line (they have a two hour bottomless mimosa option) and we were the first ones in the restaurant! We were sat in a cute window table and absolutely loved it! Our waiter was so sweet and sat and chatted with us a bit! The food was amazing! No complaints - but my hands down absolute favorite was the goat cheese toast with shaved cantaloupe a blueberry compote and balsamic drizzle. I can't begin to explain how amazing this was. I almost wanted to change my order. It was excellent!

Matthew M.

Yelp
Amazing experience + amazing food = an amazing place to eat food at. The service was spectacular i have no complaints. Would 100% recommend.

Yelp
I came here after doing my engagement shoot to have some lovely dinner in Montreal after :) We ordered their braised pork poutine and their foie gras with charcuterie platter. The portions were quite generous! Both of us were already halfway full after we shared the poutine - and those cheese curds yummmm. went beautifully with the braised pork. Our server was also very nice, they seated us by the window which was a cozy spot and away from the noise at the bar. The charcuterie were very well made- delish! we couldn't finish it so we packed it to go and when i had it the next day for lunch, STILL just as good! The foie gras also was really great on the crackers. It was really good :) Anyway lovely restaurant in the Old Montreal neighbourhood, would definitely recommend trying this place out!

Eric G.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I came here for brunch. This location was a little confusing to find since it's inside another building. Love the decor, very spacious and welcoming environment. We were greeted instantly, seated down by the windows. Our server Mat is amazing and friendly, very prompt with service. I ordered the salmon tartare while my girlfriend ordered the avocado toast with an egg Benedict. She was warned its the size of an appetizer by Mat (way to look out for us). My dish was delicious and my girlfriend agreed. Her dish on the other hand was on the salty side, which she didn't love as much but still edible. We were told by our host that this place has an amazing poutine, definitely would try next time back in Montreal.

Yelp
After a full day of driving and some afternoon stroll we were recommended by our Airbnb host to try Méchant Bœuf. The hostess at the restaurant ask if we wanted Bar for $1 oyster and she had me at $1. Ordered half dozen oyster, chicken burger, and poutine. Oyster were delicious, full of flavour for $1, it was a steal! Overheard that the oyster served was from New Brunswick. Chicken burger with a side of fries was very good! the chicken was well cooked and juicy and well complimented with crispy bacon & veg. The star entree was the poutine! the braised pork was amazing with green onion and the gravy and melted curd cheese was a perfect match!! For sure I would come here again! Bartender and hostess was very accommodating and always had a smile! :)

Yelp
Four stars for service and friendliness. The food was unfortunately hit and miss. The burrata and both salmon & beef tartares were really delicious, and our group shared those as appetizers. The fish dish, cod, was pretty bland. NY steak was well done instead of medium rare (basically a hockey puck) and the fries were undercooked and soggy. Another guest ordered a different steak cut ($$$) and that was overcooked as well. I would have sent mine back (it was pretty bad) but we were really hungry and it took so long to get our mains, I didn't want to slow things down further. Kinda puzzling to mess up meat at a steakhouse, but the apps were so good, I'm hoping it was just a fluke, or maybe due to the ongoing issues finding & retaining staff as things fully reopen.

Yelp
Not bad trendy.closer to 3,5 The good: service e is prompt. Great choices if you're a meat eater. They have "viande sauvage" for starters. We ordered their signature lamb chops and vivaneau platter. The bad: they have a lot of competition around them. Pricey but great quality of food. There was a DJ in the "house". The ugly: Quite popular so need to reserve but reservation good for 2-2,5hrs only. Like everything in the Old Port, parking is solo difficult to find close to it. Tip: good for an initiate setting, lunch meals just as good but better price...there are other competitive restos nearby like Modavie or Gibby's. Price range $$-$$$

Yelp
Have you ever thought to yourself, I want a really good steak but really don't want to be late to meet my friends at the nightclub? Why not save a stop and do them both at the same place? Trust me that sounds absurd. But our first dinner out when on our honeymoon in Montreal was just that. I wanted a steak but didn't end up with one there because when in Canada, Poutine? That's how the saying goes I'm pretty sure. I wasn't totally expecting the ambience of this place. It really caught me off guard to go to what seemed like a nice sit down restaurant from the outside and come in to a DJ spinning records and loud bass pumping with EDM music, But in a really nice setting. I don't know if this is a nightly occurrence or just a musician they had playing the night we were there. But it was different for sure. I had a nice small plate of meatball sliders and poutine was the start of realizing I hadn't had real poutine in the states. The quality of ingredients was they use in poutine all across this country is absurd and delicious and this was no different. But what stole the show was the dessert here. It had so many things going on between the cake and sorbet and marshmallow that it was insane and delicious. It had so many textures and layers and wasn't cloyingly sweet. I'm not big typically on fancy desserts but this one knocked it out of the park. If in Montreal, a definite consideration for you to stop at.

Yelp
Decent steak , But i was not impressed by the "60 days dry aging '' flavor . Their burger is good but it is very $$$ for the quantity . 7.5/10

Yelp
Went here twice as we were staying in the area. Once for dinner and second for yummy $1 oysters (hint: they're not crap oysters! Same as what they have for dinner) and $5 beers. For dinner we had the Kobe mini burgers, salads and braised beef poutine. It was nummy indeed. My partner had cerviche and a Caesar. All lovely. The hostess and waitress were pitch perfect and during "happy hour" the bar poured a loose drink and was tres friendly. I recommend.

Yelp
Merci/thank you to Alex and the crew at this lovely bistro. The hospitality and service was awesome, the dinner and wine were wonderful and we want you to know how special you made our weekend in beautiful Montreal. The restaurant was cozy yet had lots of energy and happy people. We were very comfortable. It's on a pretty side street in the Old Port and was a nice walk from our hotel.

Yelp
Delightful dinner with my family which started with a large, delicious clear sangria. Fast, friendly service started with our super crispy calamari prepared differently than the norm. Calamari wasn't over cooked and the dipping sauce was creamy and tasty. The lobster tacos were also well -prepared although the sauce was a little too tangy and a bit on the salty side. Beef short ribs was probably the best hit of the evening. Fall-off-the bone meat, well-flavored cabbage and crispy fries for a full portioned meal and memorable meal! The least favorite was the beef brisket poutine, which was good, but again, a little salty. Loved the cheese curds, but I think it was the gravy that made it taste salty overall. Still, a great dinner experience.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place for dinner and we don't regret it. She had the onglet steak and I had the grilled salmon. Both of them were amazing and we couldn't have asked for a better dinner. They also gave us some warm bread and butter which was amazing as well.

Yelp
We went there because of Happening Gourmand event. Had the brunch for 17$ each. I really enjoyed my experience. The place was big, had a DJ, lots of people during the brunch. We had an entree and the meal. Even though the food was a bit too saucy for us.. it was still delicious and new for us.

Yelp
I went to Méchant Boeuf for the first time for my boyfriend's mother's birthday. It's at a great location in the Old Port and very easy to find. With the live DJ and great happy hour deals (half off cocktails and $1 oysters), it's a nice place to start the night. The decor was modern and very old port-like, a bit fancy and an older crowd. The food was awesome, and I definitely recommend the burrata entrée to share! I had the lobster gnocchi which was also good, and I tried my boyfriend's filet mignon which was cooked perfectly. They even surprised us with a birthday cake! However, I took off a star because overall, it was too expensive for what it was so I would only come back for the happy hour deals and the groovy music.

Yelp
After my first visit at Mechant Boeuf I gave it a pretty damn good review. Well I'm gonna take most of what I said BACK. Because this week I went back for a friend' birthday dinner party and I almost choked on the level of crap I witnessed at this restaurant. Things have changed. THE GOOD As an entrée I combo-ed two of them after I saw the same dish fly by to another table and the waiter was kind of forced to comply with my request. I had the Sliders which they call the Burger Flight and with Charlevoix Poutine with braised pork, Migneron cheese. I must admit that the sliders were awesome with the little tangy mayonnaise, cherry-tomatoes and perfectly tasting meat. And the poutine was very good as usual. The service was still very friendly and casual. The Good ends there. THE BAD Anyone who knows me, knows I live for steak. If you wrap it up with bacon its even better, if you slather it with Foie Gras sauce, I have a complete mental collapse from the goddness. This is what they offered. In my previous review I raved about their Foie Gras sauce but the restaurateurs went and changed it to save of food-cost most likely and cut it down with pepper sauce. It completely changed the sauce and ruined it making the appeal of the main fly away like a bird. Next up was what I dunk in my sauce, the steak. I love eating meat, show me a way I've never eaten before and I'll try it. But the good ol' standards stick with me and a tasty steak tops the list. I've had steak all over North America. There's only one way to eat steak and properly enjoy its flavour, its texture, its juices and that's RARE. You can eat Flank Steak and if it's properly prepared it'll be tender despite being the toughest but yet most flavourful cut of meat. I ordered a NY strip rare and what I got was a piece of rubber I could hardly cut through without having the steak slip and sliding all over my plate. Chewwing? That was impossible. I wanted to install a mandibular grinder to pre-grind my meat for me. So impossibly chewy steak with disgustingly peppery Foie Gras sauce. But WAIT, it's gets better? THE UGLY I of course called up the waiter to complained about the rubber boot on my plate and this is where it gets sad and yet funny. The waiter goes and talks with the manager about the situation and comes back to tell me that it's normal for rare steak to be chewy. WHAT THE FUCK? WHEN DID THIS WARP IN THE UNIVERSE HAPPEN? Talk about crappy client service, piss poor knowledge of meat preparation and total lack of respect. In most restaurants where I pay 40$ for a piece of crap meat, the manager has the decency to come over to my table and talk to me personally and makes a deal. This time no deal other than to re-fire my steak, which duh, would have given me a medium steak and a steak that has already cooled down after cooking cannot be re-heated. Go ahead and try it, it's horrible because it boils the meat. Someone else at my table ordered the Pan-Seared Foie Gras at 13$ a pop. This was the biggest joke of the night. It was barely a quarter of a liver and it was burnt to a crisp. I wanted to scream bloody murder. If it weren't for the fact that it was my friend's birthday party I would have exploded. This is obviously a case of retards with no experience who have no place opening a restaurant who decided to open the next trendy go-to hot spot. All form and no function. It looks cool, it's pretty, it's trendy but the food is horrible. Méchant Bœuf can sling some tasty burgers but that's where they peak.

Yelp
A dinner out with some of the Sales Execs led us to Mechant boeuf ... amid the myriad of restaurants we are making our way through during each business visit to Montreal. The atmosphere is inviting, nice color scheme and the water wall feature is relaxing even through the many conversations tableside as well as the bar in this eclectic restaurant. Our evening began with libations, of course, from Lychee martini to Argentinian wine to a standard Cosmo. Appetizer split between the four of us was the Tasting Tartar which included beef, salmon and tuna. Very large portions, so glad we were all consuming this offering...served with crustini and a spicy ponzu style sauce. Dinner - we ended up with identical orders - NY Strip set on a bed of creamy cheese potatoes and crowned with an onion and bacon topping. The side was a mix of summer squash and zucchini simply sauted. The meat was not as tender as I would have liked and there was certainly some fatty stuff on the sides that could have been trimmed prior to service. The potatoes were ok, although a bit too creamy to support the meat as a platform. The veggies were bland. Dessert - a decadent chocolate cake with a very rich icing...not house made but a nice way to end the meal. What I found interesting on the menu was "Beer Can Chicken"....hmmm, not a BBQ joint, not a Roadhouse, and certainly not located in rural VA, so why I ask you would that appear on a menu with tartar, assorted cuts of steak and nice shrimp offerings??? Can't say it would be a regular place for me, especially since there are so many more choices of eateries we have yet to try!
