Meissl & Schadn

"Here, the Wiener schnitzel is the obvious choice – it's best to order it "mit allen Schikanen" (with all the trimmings)! At this beautiful restaurant located on Vienna's famous Ringstrasse, good food is accompanied by classical music, Viennese service culture and an elegant yet pleasantly down-to-earth atmosphere. The open kitchen is also visible from outside, so you will see the schnitzels being pounded before you even enter." - Michelin Inspector

Google
It was decent We came to Meissl & Schadn as the place we planned to eat at was full and we didn't have a reservation. Meissl & Schadn was mostly full as well but offered us a high top table so we took it. As they were very busy, it took about 15 minutes for a waiter to come by. We ordered to share: - Weiner Schnitzel plus Parsley Potatoes - Bottle of Sparkling Water The food took about 10 to 15 minutes to be prepared and served. The schnitzel was hot and all puffed up. The potatoes were served in a bowl. They were barely warm but we enjoyed them. The Weiner Schnitzel prep area faces the street and can be seen from outside. One person pounds the veal thin, another breads it and another fries it in clarified butter. It was interesting to watch. While the food was decent, they pound their schnitzel very thin here. We prefer a bit thicker. And while the breading was fine, we would have preferred it with a bit more flavor (spices).

I came to Meissl & Schadn with one goal in mind, Schnitzel, and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is beautifully set in the heart of Vienna and has a charming, upscale feel. While the menu offers a variety of options, the Schnitzel is clearly the star of the show. I ordered one and it was absolutely amazing: perfectly crispy, full of intense flavor, and the portion was huge. A fantastic experience from start to finish. Highly recommended if you're in Vienna and craving the real deal.

Google
I really liked the way they serve their schnitzels. You can order your schnitzel either fried in lard, clarified butter or vegetable oil. I found the schnitzel itself one of the best during my current trip where I tried 6 good quality schnitzels. Their version was very well seasoned, coated and nicely prepared. Almost zero grease in my plate. Crispy on the outside and not dry on the inside very well balanced. I tried both lard and clarified butter, although the difference was not big I preferred the lard one. Potato salad was okay however I tried several better ones during the trip. The cheese curd cake at the end was tasty however the sugar cover was way too sweet. Nice ambience and decor and decent service. Will definitely visit next time.

I was told to try the Wiener schnitzel when I'm in Vienna and so we did. Delicious as my friends say, the the sides were as good too. Friendly waitress who doesn't bother to strike a nice conversation. Will definitely come again when I visit the city.

We had a wonderful lunch at Meissl & Schadn Wien. The food was delicious—my roast beef was tender and flavorful, and my partner’s paprika chicken was perfectly seasoned and comforting. What really stood out, though, was the service: warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming from start to finish. A memorable dining experience in Vienna—highly recommend!

Google
In summary, we were pleased but not dazzled. Probably a 3.5 star experience. Let me break this down: Wiener Schnitzel: (B) Here’s the rub… this was probably the best Weiner Schnitzel I’ve ever tried, yet it wasn’t great. I’ve personally never tried excellent Weiner Schnitzel and was hoping Meissl Schadn changed this. So the bar was set pretty low. It turned out to the best I’ve had, but the best wasn’t good enough for me. I’ll continue my search for the elusive delectable Wiener Schnitzel!! Appetizers: (B+) We tried both the Beef Tartare and the Bone Marrow. Both were quite good but not memorable. Potato Salad: (C-) Not my cup of tea… tasteless. Instead, fries would’ve been great. Ambiance and Service (A-): Pleasant ambiance coupled with good and prompt service. For a party of six, we spent 279 Euros (5 Weiner Schnitzels with accompanying potato salad, water, only one beer, 3 appetizers, no dessert).

Google
A nice restaurant with calm atmosphere to relax after a busy day. Schnitzel is tasty, lacks a little bit in salt in my opinion but meat is good and the crust is not greasy at all. They also serve french fries, which is not written on the menu but the waitress was kind enough to inform us.

Google
A great place to experience a typical Wiener Schnitzel. The staff is very welcoming, the service is excellent, and the atmosphere is pleasant. You can even watch the entire process of preparing the big, tasty schnitzel through a window — it's a fun and delicious experience! 😋 "By the way, I've always wondered whether genuine Wiener Schnitzel is made from pork or veal."

Yelp
Sit outside in central Vienna near the Philharmonic and Opera House for some delicious schnitzel and other austrian delicacies with wonderful service! We came for lunch, got seated right away, the food was delicious and wait staff was so nice and fast. Yes its pricier than others because of the central location but that comes with the territory of being downtown.

Yelp
Tried the famous Michelin guide reviewed classic Austrian dish made by Meissen & Schadn Erin which was a restaurant connected to my hotel. Sadly the service was very horrible and the wait after seating/dining was so dreadful. Felt like they didn't even want to serve us because we didn't order as many items as other bigger parties. Had to flag down multiple staff to just let me pay and leave. The food was bland and this is a total tourist trap. Wouldn't recommend this place to travelers who are wishing to try to classic Viennese schnitzel. You can honestly get it at a local bar for 1/2 the price and better quality!

Yelp
The food here is amazing. The Wiener schnitzel may look huge, but you will end up eating the whole thing because it is so delicious and light. The service was quick and the ambiance was beautiful. I also recommend getting the Salzburger Nockerln for dessert. It was to die for.

Yelp
Excellent place for schnitzel done the correct way. Michelin guide reviewed, I was more thank pleased with everything at Meissl. The service was fast and professional. The atmosphere was inviting and great for groups or just the solo traveler. And the location was right in the middle of everything. I opted for the traditional preparation with lard vice the clarified butter. Coming with potato salad and cranberries, both of which were also excellent, means you will want to finish the entire plate - I did. The great wine selection was also reasonably priced to take advantage of great Austrian wine. Veal schnitzel in Vienna. Done.

Yelp
Great schnitzel and sides. We had the traditional schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Yelp
Hands down after trying 10+ schnitzel spots - this together with restaurant Wiener is the best schnitzel spot in Austria, better than hyped places like figlmüller or plachuta. We also tried sixta and other good online Rated spots The portion, size, quality and interior nailed it. It could be more crunchy outside but taste wise this is the best and worth a try! Skip the Tafelspitz. Get the schnitzel with marmelade and cucumber salad.

Yelp
Very nice meal for lunch. Started with the goulash, great taste (but small). The chicken fell off the bone, and the spatzle was seasoned very well.

Yelp
Great food choice and quality. Service staff was very professional and patient with bunch of foreigners ;) Overall enjoyed the whole experience.

Yelp
Amazing wiener schnitzel but the restaurant is quite expensive and upscale so be warned it won't be easy on the wallet! The house white wine they had was also fantastic

Yelp
This place is beautiful and fun! The service is great and the food is amazing. We had their traditional schnitzel and potato salad- both were delicious. Loved the decor and the ambiance. Enjoyed watching the cooks prepare the dishes behind a glass window- it's like a dinner and a show.

Yelp
Very much okay. We are visiting Vienna and were drawn in by the Michelin star and Trip Advisor reviews. We had a reservation, were shown a table right away. Classical music was playing throughout our visit. Received good wine recommendations, and my son ordered the bone marrow starter which he enjoyed alongside their delicious bread. I ordered the chicken paprikash for entree and he got the trout muniere. Both were very good. But then...had to flag down server for second glass of wine since food was brought by a runner. Had to flag down server to ask for dessert menu. Dessert was the Hungarian chocolate cake (below average). Had to flag down server for check. These "flagging downs" happened after patiently waiting long periods each time, 10 minutes plus. We had dinner at the restaurant next door the night before and received both great food AND great service - and their chocolate cake looked amazing!

Yelp
Didn't get to try their food which looked great. Found this establishment to be racist against "tourists" I was a guest at the Hotel Grand Ferdinand which the restaurant was connected to. I stayed at the top floor below their rooftop bar in one of their nicest rooms, hence not being some rift raft. I had plans to dine at this establishment after checking out on Aug 1, 2022 at 2:00 pm before making my departure to Budapest. The restaurant at the time only had a few guests seated but when asking for a table the waitress notified me that they're entirely booked for lunch, at 2:00pm with so many tables available. She was rude at that too and snooty. I spare no expense on dining at new places. I love trying new places and always over order just so that I can try just a bit of everything. I didn't get to splurge here at all. I did find a couple of establishments in Vienna rude to tourists, it may be in their nature which I don't blame. We don't enjoy tourist back home either. The ones that are rude, disrespectful, and just being a nuisance. I'm not like one of those tourists at all.

Yelp
Worst food I've had in Vienna. Rude service and the food was basically inedible. Pasta was literally dripping in butter (see photo). They were out of half the menu even though it was only 8 PM including celery schnitzel. Cannot recommend this place in good conscience.

Yelp
Absolutely awful. The food was ok, but we made a reservation for 9:30 and showed up precisely at 9:30. We were told the kitchen would be closing soon. i asked our waiter if I could still dessert, specifically a strudel. He said "absolutely, we can always make a strudel." We were immediately ready to order and did. Then we were told by the manager that it was too late for our appetizers, so we could only get our entrees because kitchen was closing. I told him we would take everything at once and he begrudgingly agreed to let us. We pre-ordered 2 desserts to be accommodating and help the kitchen out. We got one and waited 20 minutes for the other (no one was around to ask). Finally, I hunted someone down to ask where our strudel was. He told me that the kitchen was closed and it was impossible to get the strudel our server told us he could always get. Even more amazingly, nobody bothered to come tell us this, as I had to go up and hunt someone down to find out. Did they take anything off our bill as a "sorry"? Of course not! Why make reservations for 9:30 if you have no intent or ability to properly serve people who come at that time? Truly an awful place who doesn't care about their customers.

Yelp
It gets the job done. Typical "slightly higher end" tourist trap energy here. It's located on a lovely street with great ambiance but the staff ultimately knows you're just here to try Wiener schnitzel for the first time and they are not going to feel the need to elevate your experience any more than that. For Americans: imagine trying the Cheesecake Factory for the first time. It's very fun, new and cool options but you know this isn't fine dining and nor does the staff have any urgency for that same reason. Ultimately, I recommend you go here in a pinch to get the schnitzel out of your system and they'll serve you fries with it. Sit outside and just enjoy this place for what it is. It is not a fancy European restaurant, rather a facade that attempts to make breaded veal into high culture. But it's honestly not bad! It just has the same energy as eating chicken tenders and fries and that is okay! Enjoy Austria!

Yelp
First time here and first time to try schnitzel. Schnitzel is tasty but potato salad is not. My cousin's salad tasted spoiled so we complained it. They gave her a new bowl of salad but it ruined her appetite already. Service of the firt guy who got our order is very poor. He's arrogant and no customer service skills. He needs to go for a training.

Yelp
We wanted schnitzel. You can see through the window how these guys make it. Looked impressive. Beef soup was simple but good. Schnitzel - this is what I remember it should be (and veal!!). Wine - try Savinion Blanc. I was very pleased. You probably better making reservation if conning after 19:00.

Yelp
Wonderful food, excellent service. Open air or enclosed dining. No kidding. Visible kitchen.

Yelp
The schnitzel is phenomenal and the German potato salad is incredible as well! The staff was very kind and helpful, I would recommend this place to anyone looking for the best schnitzel and service in Vienna.
google avatar

Yelp
OK, it's a little pricey and classy, but if you, want really good wiener schnitzel, this is definitely the place to go (and let's face it, you can get reasonable schnitzel all over Vienna). You can watch them pounding the schnitzel while you wait, but all that pounding definitely makes it as tender as it gets. I liked the salad, too (despite some negative comments among the reviews here) and our waiter was excellent and very funny - so much so that my wife asked him if he had another job as a comedian (apparently not!). And a good selection of wine, too.

Yelp
This is of course a Wiener schnitzel place. But that is like saying California is a surf place. Meissel & Schadn belong to the ranks of Viennese haute cuisine in every respect. From the artistic and eclectic modernist decor to the white linen table service and Michelin star level deserts it is a dining experience tour de force and holds its own amongst the best of the best in a fabulous city!

Yelp
The restaurant has seating inside and outside. We had the bone marrow appetizer and the famous Weiner Schnitzel. The appetizer was delicious. For the Schnitzel, you can order it cooked in lard, butter, or vegetable oil. I chose the traditional way in lard. My husband chose butter. We ended up switching. I preferred the buttery taste. We had it with the potato salad. You cannot go wrong with German potato salad. We shared the apple strudel with vanilla ice cream. They divided it for us before bringing it out. The strudel was delicious as expected. What surprised me was how good the ice cream was. It was creamy and had the perfect amount of sweet. It was the best vanilla ice cream I have ever tasted. The only thing that surprised me was our bottle of wine was not kept on the table. Our waitress continued to refill it throughout our meal. I did see the bottle empty. Our table was very small & we already had a bottle of water on the table. Plus it was a white wine. There was no room for the bottle let alone an ice bucket. If you are staying in the city center then I recommend this restaurant if you want to have delicious Weiner schnitzel. Also, you can see the cooks working in the kitchen. That is always a mark of a good restaurant. My only complaint is that the tables were very close together. But that is just the way things go sometimes.
