The Best North African Restaurants in Montreal - Eater Montreal

"An elegant, fully-licensed Moroccan restaurant on the South Shore, this place serves classic tagines and pastillas, alongside international dishes that dip into French cuisine, with options like duck confit and escargots. Enjoy the stately decor, lit by the metal lanterns that cast intricate designs onto the walls." - Karin Murray-Bergquist, Ivy Lerner-Frank

It was delicious. Been three with the family, once with a group of friends and everyone loved their meals every time. Everything is prepared with care and tastes fresh. Don't let the lack of flashy decor or small number of tables turn you off. First time I went, I almost didn't go but I'm so glad I did! As an added bonus, prices are very affordable. Already planning next visit!

What an absolute gem, it is a crime that this restaurant is not filled to the brim every service. The food, service, ambiance was amazing. The FOOD! The couscous royal, filet de sole, puff pastry mushroom, soup, salad, everything was incredible, if you were asking whether or not you should come here: you should absolutely be coming here.

We were told the chef was renown for cooking asian food back in Morocco. After speaking with him, we found out that he speaks 5 languages (his ethnic background being half Vietnamese and half Moroccan). It's no wonder the dishes here are exceptional and unique. The dishes we chose felt like a harmonious marriage between two cultures. We will have to come back to try more.

Got yelled at for not leaving a tip and not allowed to leave the store until we paid an extra 25$ hidden service fee. This is illegal under Quebec's Consumer Protection Law. After stating that I don't mind paying a fair price for the service but that they should add it to the menu and bill to make it clear instead of surprising us with it after I've already paid. The owner, who is visibly an immigrant, started commenting on how I, a Canadian, "must not be from these parts" and must be confused with european laws, despite never having been to europe. Don't support shady businesses like this. Their prices look too good compared to restaurants that are up front with their mandatory fees.

The food here is amazing. Everything I tried is delicious, fresh and nice decorated. Can’t stopping thinking the soup, yummy!

We went here for dinner when we were visiting Montreal. We wanted something we hadn't tried before in terms of cuisine and this fit the bill. We had the confit salad. Which was really well made. The duck was tender yet had a crisp exterior. The salad was light and delicious and fresh. With strips of veggies and a house dressing it was perfect to get us already for the mains. For the mains we had the tagine chicken and the pastilla. This came with a cream of vegetable soup and a mushroom pastry. Both were just perfect. Soup was creamy yet no actual cream was used in it. Lot of complex flavours. The mushroom pastry was equally good. The main dishes lived up to the buildup after all the previous dishes. The tagine was flavorful and the chicken was tender. The pastilla was served with more of the salad we loved. It was well flavored with almonds was delicious. Dessert was included as well and was flan and a ricotta mousse. And both as perfectly made as the rest of the meal. Very rarely have I had a meal that was so well done from the first dish to the last.

Food was amazing and the fact that the owner/chef came to greet us was outstanding! The menu and wine are great! Everything is delicious and new decorations are nice.

This is a hidden gem in Brossard and in Montreal. The ambience is nice and the food is very good, very European with a touch of exotic. The wine list is good and the food price is very very friendly. And the owners takes time to talk and explain everything you want to know about their cuisine. They told us there is a belly dancing performance every 2 weeks. Be sure to try the Table d'hôte with Grilled Salmon with Pate Mille Feuille and Soupe du Jour as entrée. We sure will come back.

Yelp
My friend and his wife have been telling about this place for over a year... We finally had the chance to go last weekend on a whim we came here. Though my review is only about the quality of the food, I just want to say, the service here is warm and attentive. The menu is in three section a salad section to which you can make into a table d'hôte for 5$. Then there's the plats favoris section which is a table d'hôte section with various choices. Come with either soup, or salad, or entree and dessert. It's 25$, what? How is this possible! The last section meats table d'hôte, 45$. Has filet mignon, lamb shank, lamb chops and veal. We ordered from the plats favoris for 25$ The entrée was mushroom puff pasty, it was flaky, mushroom was creamy but not too rich, well balanced mushroom to pastry ratio. For this to be part of a table d'hôte impressed me. Next I chose the butternut squash ravioli in rosée sauce. Ravioli cooked just right, filling was nice and sauce well balanced. I had the mascarpone with raspberry jam dessert. Light sweet and tangy, nothing fancy but nice. All this for 25$? See you next week?

Yelp
I found this Meridional via an online search and based on great reviews and proximity to our location, we gave it a shot. All I have to say is that our 9 family members were all very happy that we found a quality restaurant at all levels (food, service, pricing and atmosphere). We found a gemstoneand this is our "go to" everytime we have a family get together. Unfortunately, my wife and I live in Colorado, although I am convinced that my family members will pay a visit to the owners for a 5-star experience at a very affordable cost. I wish them a full restaurant on all the 4 nights they are open. A must try and you will definitely make it one of your favorite.

Yelp
Stayed in Brossard for the F1 race and chose Meridional for one evening based on the reviews and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious, the staff were super friendly and the overall ambiance and experience was great.

Yelp
Loved everything we had! The service was really good as well as the food. Everything is served like a set menu - one appetizer, one meal and dessert. Some of our standouts were the gnocchi in cream basil white wine sauce, shrimp in saffron cream and the marscapone mousse. The couscous royale was great too!! Would 100% return!

Yelp
This restaurant is located in a small strip mall just outside of Montreal. My family and I stumbled upon it because we found good reviews online and on Yelp, so we decided to give it a try; needless to say, we were not disappointed! The food was delicious and filling; we tried the three course set (appetizer, entree, dessert) as well as the single menu entree option. Both were cooked and seasoned well; the French, Mediterranean/Morrocan, and fusion flavors were so tasty. I had the ravioli with rosé sauce, and my mother had the chicken tajine. My father and brother had the couscous with veal, chicken, and lamb. The desserts were not too sweet (perfect for us) and so full of flavor. I had a lime mousse and my mother had an orange-flan type egg based dessert. The Moroccan mint tea was perfect after the meal. There is a language barrier (none of my family speaks French) but the waitresses and the chef all came to speak to us and worked with us on finding options that were allergen friendly. Great service, English and French menus, and amazing food. Definitely worth the trip and the time.

Yelp
Just one taste of the food here and you can tell the chef has a real passion for food. The chef's exceptional finesse on seasoning gives it away. The balance of salinity, acidity, sweetness, and umami is spot on. There is also a decent depth of fragrance in the dishes as well. When a chef dedicates this much passion into food, you will have a great meal. Recommendations: Lamb chops Tajin Chicken Couscous Royal Fish soup

Yelp
if i could give it more stars i would! the food was absolutely amazing! the staff was so friendly and accommodating. we even ordered some things not listed on the menu including 12 escargots in a fantastic creamy sauce. all mains were delicious and well balanced. very light AND very satisfying. the prefix is an AMAZING deal. 5$ more and you get an starter and a desert! It's not in the most convenient location unless you're already on the highway but i personally think it's worth going out of the way. this has been the best restaurant on our canada trip so far. great staff. great food. great prices.

Yelp
One of the best in Brossard! Small, cosy restaurant, moderate prices for outstanding food. Owner couple very attentive and welcoming. Eastern Mediterranean/South of France cuisine, graciously presented. About a kilometer south of the new Samuel-de-Champlain bridge, in a strip mall anchored by a Tim Horton at the corner of Boul. Rome and Marie-Victorin, it's well worth seeking out.

Yelp
I love this amazing restaurant. It is a little hard to find, but please search it out. Prices are moderate, but quality is staggeringly good. French, Italian and Moroccan cuisine, excellent international wine list, and fantastic desserts, with a supremely efficient and friendly staff, all ensure a wonderful dining adventure.

Yelp
Upon arrival in Montreal, we accidentally found this restaurant, thanks to the our car's navigator. We were pleasantly surprised by the wonderful atmosphere and delicious food. The only reason why I put 4 stars, because they have menu only in French. I respect their culture, like a French part of Canada. But in my understanding this is not acceptable for a restaurant located in Canada, which is part of North America and closely bounded by the United States

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful - hands down the best meal I had in my week in Montreal. The chef came to the table personally to explain the dishes, which were all divine. Very good service, excellent food, nice setting. Can't recommend highly enough!
