Restaurant Oberländer Weinstube

What a nice restaurant gem in Karlsruhe. I stumbled into the place without any expectations and left impressed. I had the seven course menu with wine pairing and it was just beautiful, delicious and the service impeccable. I will let the pictures speak for themselves- highly recommend to ensure yourself into this unpretentious and wonderful experience delivered by a young couple who had made the jump into the tough restaurant scene.

The location is beautiful and the food excellent . It’s expensive but you get quality for what you pay. It makes for a very nice dinner in a pleasant atmosphere. Only two points why not 5 stars. 1) the mark-up on wines seems to be very high. I bought a Chardonnay Kopp am Altenberg 2019 for 60 euro, while retail price is around 20. This means a mark-up of around 200%. Seems to be a lot for a bottle with such price. 2) a “weinstube” could do with a professional sommelier to really guide the customers through the vast choice.

The Oberländer Weinstube is type of an old-fashioned southern German style restaurant at a very high quality level in terms of cooking (Badische Cousine). Baden is a small former State of Germany. Southern Germany's culture is very different from the rest of Germany and might be compared with the culture of the southern states in the US. For me the very slowly speaking people with mostly agricultural background in Tennessee seem to be not very different from the people here in Baden. While Tennessee enjoys their ribs we would rather recommend at the Oberländer Weinstube roast saddle of venison with a taste of juniper and with blueberries. Of course the excellent service and the wine list meets all expectations which could be associated with a one star Michelin Restaurant in beautiful Baden's former capital Karlsruhe.
