On the Grid : Orange rouge

"Aside from employing the nicest staff ever, Orange rouge is described as Chinatown’s best kept secret. With its generous selection of Asian-fusion dishes and beverages, the restaurant owes its inspiration to Chinese cuisine and a delicate mix of Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean flavours (much like Montreal, Orange rouge celebrates the power of diversity). Sit back and enjoy the refined, speakeasy-style ambience created by lacquered black walls and soft candlelight. Chef Minh Phat’s creations will take you on a culinary trip like never before!" - Havas Montréal

The Best Dim Sum Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Ruby Rouge has all the dishes you’d expect to find offered from carts, with a twist: there’s a long counter set up at the back showcasing daily specials and in-demand items. It’s here you’ll find the steam table, with Singapore noodles, braised chicken, and beef rice noodle rolls on one side, and sweets like layered black sesame jellied cakes and egg tarts on the other. This is the spot where takeout lunch boxes are put together and patrons rush the deep-fried squid when it emerges from the kitchen (don’t miss it). Early birds will enjoy Ruby Rouge’s discount dim sum on weekday mornings between 9 and 11 a.m." - Ivy Lerner-Frank

Google
This review is for their ddash/ueats products. This has to be the best value Chinese one can get on that platform. Dim sum on demand and other Chinese meals provided in a more generous quantity than most competitors. The only downside is that taste and quality may feel a little cheaper, but if you're really hungry, it hits the spot.

We were craving dim sum while in Montreal. This restaurant located on the 2nd floor inside a small mall. We were seated quickly and was asked what tea we wanted. Was nice to see push cart ordering here. We ordered five dishes to try. Overall the quality of the dim sum was average. We went on a Friday and it was not too busy so it could explain why some of the dim sum wasn't as fresh. The fried squid was cold and a bit rubbery. The har gow was decent.

Google
Horrible service when today to eat dim sum today with my mother. The carts ladies taking their time and chit chat with others without serving us foods for awhile. The food is so awful. It was so so not the best dim sum ever ate. Barely any service… I when to pay they complain why I gave them such a low tip. due to those main reasons and the food not even serve hot it was barely even warm.. never going back their again gave them a chance. Also I dislike how one of the waitresses mention my job thinking she knows me. I don’t know her just another customer to me. keep your comment to yourself was my day off. They seriously need to work customer service cause they was barely any. Not my fault bad tip just due to those issues.

Google
We were so happy to find Ruby Rouge and great dim sum in Montreal! It’s on the 2nd floor up a main flight of stairs. We completely over-ate stuffing ourselves with all the expected goodies: har gow, chicken feet, sticky rice with lotus leaf, tofu skin, shu mai, shrimp/beef rice roll, fried pork dumpling, bbq pork bun, tripe, baby squid, beef short ribs, fried pork dumplings, hot sour soup, calamari, fried noodles (4 different kinds), mixed vegetables. The waiters were terrific and ensured we had lots of tea and ice water. Dim sum operates differently here than NYC. In NYC, it’s a blood sport to get a table on a weekend – they open around 9am and if you don’t arrive by 10-10:30am, you’re going to be waiting an hour. So we arrived at 10:07am discovering that Ruby Rouge doesn’t even open until 10:30am with the carts starting at 10:45am. They were very gracious and allowed us to enter and sit at a table. Same carts being pushed around with tasty treats and a main table with a few more offerings. Excellent and comparable dishes to our favorite NYC dim sum. The sesame balls had different inside filling than we are used to. We did not find taro cake or the skinny crispy shrimp egg rolls – can’t win them all. We also noticed a cart with what looked like churros – we didn’t try them – maybe next time. We will definitely be back!

Come to this place is all about food. I order BBQ pork Bento box for take out. It is only cost 7$. Seriously, I am wondering how they can make profit. The portion is huge ( especially the rice). I won't be too picky on the quality of the char Siu for this price. It is certainly decent. And it is better than any McDo. But ya, the ambient is very old and the service is soso

Google
service was bad, the waitress was ‘quick’ but she never really looked at us. many times i had to get up and asked her what we needed. tea took awhile before we got it, received food before the plates, hot sauce was mix with another sauce (ginger w tofu.) tea was good. food was alright. ordered fried noodles w sea food, a bit salty and cheap vegetable (i’ve had better) i guess best part was the tofu dessert and hot flower tea...

Google
Third visit to Ruby Rouge and we were a little nervous going in because of the influx of negative reviews. I want to say I have no idea what these reviewers were talking about, we had a lovely time. We did dim sum this time, and the only issue was getting something we didn’t order and not getting one thing we tried to order. But that probably just comes down to a miscommunication with multiple language barriers! We didn’t love all the food but that’s what happens when you try something new. The delicious food was delicious as always, and we tried some new things that we loved! We ordered way too much, though! Leftovers for tomorrow!

Google
If you speak only french/English, it is quite hard to be served for dim sum, server will just past you by and won't show you what's on the tray it is unfortunate because the food is very good UPDATE: This has improved a lot in the past year. There is a lot of the menu and everything is very good, good portions and good price. We often order from Ruby rouge on Uber eat and everything is always fresh and good.

Yelp
Finally found my pictures and remembered that I needed to write about this. A friend took me here and it was an enjoyable experience. The egg tart pastry was amazing because it had the additional tasty crust that covered the egg tart where the egg tart usually shows up on top in many other Asian bakeries. This might be one of the best egg tart pastries I've had! Presumedly, comes from a bakery in the area- I don't know the bakeries around and didn't have time to scope around like that unfortunately. The shrimp rolls here were okay, the dim sum dumplings were delicious with flavor, juice, and typical dim sum texture. The hot tofu was done well and with the syrup. Staff is friendly here. Location is convenient and ambiance is nice for a traditional Asian dining classy restaurant.

Yelp
Our goal was to get cart-wheeling dim sum. We came in at 2pm, after the usual lunch rush crowd. The dining room was nearly empty, so we got our choice of seating. We tried about 10 dishes (not all pictured), all very tasty. Nothing in particular was a stand-out, but we also were not displeased with anything. The service was... interesting. We felt like our server warmed up to us over the course of lunch and by the end of our meal we had a few friendly exchanges. We chalked the quirkiness up to a cultural divide.

Yelp
After some research (Yelp and otherwise), it seemed that Ruby Rouge was the place to go for dim sum delivered by carts, and it turned out to be a good call. As has been mentioned elsewhere, it's up a flight of stairs, it opens around 10:30, and the carts start coming around about 10:45. There's also a sort of order and take out counter to the left of the entrance. Menu items can also be ordered inside while dim sum is coming around. The carts come out slowly and increase in number about every 15 minutes or so, and items seem to come out in a predictable order. You're given a small ramekin with a spicy sauce and mustard in it, which for me is sufficient. I don't feel the need for soy sauce for dim sum, nor is it on the table and has to be requested. One thing I liked is that the cost of items appear on the card for each row, so that you can maintain a rough idea of how much your meal has cost so far. The other thing I liked is the atmosphere. It was very friendly and relaxed, and I noticed many of the staff waving to individuals as they entered, probably regulars. While they didn't have necessarily the variety of offerings I've had at other dim sum restaurants, the overall experience was quite enjoyable and worth considering on future visits to Montreal.

Yelp
Located on the 2nd floor. We had some difficulties finding which door to enter from on the ground level but eventually found the right one. There is an underground garage across the street where we parked. $10 CAD for under 2 hours. Came here for dim sum on a Thursday afternoon. Got seated right away. Pretty big space with lots of tables. They accept credit cards including Amex. Dim sum was good, I got my usuals that I normally get in NYC. The cart rotations were on the slower side but we weren't in a rush. You know it's good dim sum when you see the grannies. They also have a la carte items you can order. We got the lobster with noodles and a fried tofu dish.

Yelp
This is the first dim sum restaurant I have visited after COVID with numerous cravings for this kind of food. We arrived just after 10am on a Saturday, thinking about what it used to be in terms of opening hours and trying to avoid the big crowd. Guess what? We were the first one in and the waitress at the door insisted that they are already opened. Reluctantly, we got seated and were served Jasmine tea. Gradually, more customers start coming in and an hour later, the push carts ladies came with food, and we ordered spare ribs, stuffed tofu skins, mushroom & pork dumplings, shrimp and pork dumplings, sticky rice and finally Cantonese fried noodles. Service was unusually pleasant. However, unless my taste has changed or the food is no longer tasty as it used to be pre COVID. Having eaten at home for so long, I am now allergic to greasy food and recycled vegetable oil. The fried rice was ok, but the meat was tough. I will continue my search for pre COVID dim sum.

Yelp
Grew up eating here. Very fast and kind people servicing you! Very easy to get a table. Big portions and consistant taste. Dinner banquets are always held here and basically have had these family dinners since I was little. Great to see them surviving post pandemic

Yelp
Really good Dim sum. Went with a couple of friends in the late afternoon and it was empty so the food was very quick to arrive. Everything we ordered was hot and delicious. No complaints whatsoever. They also cleared the table often so no trouble with an overcrowded table. Easy to split the bill so it's ideal for groups.

Yelp
I ordered delivery. Their specialty dishes are Dimsum. Dim sum is a snack size dish from Guangdong,China. It's equivalent of brunch but in smaller portions to share. People would meet each other and talk while eating. During the pandemic we can't meet friends and I miss a lot about the dim sum experience, not only the food but also the chance to meet friends. Almost over a year, I miss dim sum but I am was afraid that the quality of the food delivered would drop drastically so I never ordered delivery. I am glad I tried them. They limited the menu, only keeping the popular items good to be delivered. You can also order wok fried dishes and fried rice kind of Chinese food too, be sure to include some dim sum to try.

Yelp
A typical Chinatown restaurant, which means do not expect too much service (my rating is also excluding the service score). If a good service is important to you, I simply suggest you avoid this place, especially during peak hours. I have come to this restaurant quite many times through many years. Globally their dim sum is mediocre but this is the situation in Montreal in terms of dim sum (I am also a frequent of other dim sum restaurants in Montreal). If there is one reason that makes me coming back all these years, it has to be the custard bun or "nai huang bao" that they serve here. It is my all-time favourite dim sum dish. This restaurant serves pretty decent custard buns and it is worth it just coming for this dish. An extra note for this dish is that it is not the same as the egg yolk bun or "liu sha bao". The former is more creamy and less liquid and absolutely does not include salted egg yolk in the filling, while the latter has salted egg yolk inside and the filling is more fluid. Sometimes you might see in some menus "custard egg yolk bun" and in this case it is definitely not the "custard bun" because it has egg yolk inside. It is getting more and more common that the custard bun is not included in the menu or push carts in many dim sum restaurants. It is primarily due to two reasons: first, it might be of low profit and difficult to make this dish. Second, typical (senior) Chinese customers do not exceptionally like this dish. However if you like to finish your dim sum with sweet dessert buns, I highly recommend this dish. If you do not like the saltiness in the egg yolk, please be super cautious when you order this dish as many waiters confuse these two dishes too!

Yelp
This was the first time I had eaten at this place because of the tour. The dishes are ok. The tour agent preordered the dishes. It exceeded my expectations. The bbq pork and soy sauce chicken are good. The sweet and sour pork is delicious. The rating supposes to be three stars and but the oranges deserved one more star. The oranges were sweet and delicious.

Yelp
I went there for dim sum the other day and the service wasn't that great. Since the COVID started, business hasn't been booming as before the COVID. They only got 2 cart pushers...they don't announce what they are pushing, and quickly walk by. My family has been sitting there for over an hour and no food has come over. I would have given them 2-stars review, but because the owners are friends of the family...I had given a 3-stars rating. I would give it a lot more, if I was satisfied with the cart pushers putting foods on our table, instead of chatting with other customers at their tables, while others are sitting at their tables, patiently starving.

Yelp
If you're looking for a short-cut for dinner, take-out from Ruby Rouge might be the answer. Located on the second floor, the takeout counter is outside the restaurant and serves both the restaurant, as well as to-go orders. On a cold Monday morning, a number of lacquered and roasted ducks were ready for serving. We ordered a whole duck, which we requested to be cut up, as well as two small containers of duck sauce. As always, the duck was meaty, tender and well-seasoned. I also like the spicy (but not hot) and flavorful sauce. We also ordered a pound of roast pork. The still-warm and succulent pork was perfectly roasted, the skin was crispy and crackling while the meat and (meltingly good) fat was just lovely. Steamed chicken and lacquered barbecue pork are also available. The counter person chopped up order after order; I held my breath because I always equate speed with missing fingers. However, he ably took care of our order as well as those for the restaurant.

Yelp
I wanted to go to another Chinese restaurant but that one had a long wait time and the weather being uber cold, we decided this was the lesser of the evils. Decor, I would say this building got stuck in time. I'm sure there once were the glory days of Chinatown and this was a relic of those former days. Carpets, drapes and chairs are somewhat stained, dated and tattered yet nobody seems to mind that they should've been replaced 15 years ago. Which IMO is why this type of restaurant continues to live on. Now onto the service. It's as friendly as you'll get in a typical Asian restaurant, which for those who know, is not a lot. However, you're here for the food, not the service. Ok let's talk about food. The dishes are acceptable for the price paid. Your standard Chinese fare with little fanfare. We ate a functional meal that satisfied our hunger without spending much at all. It's the type of place you go to when you're somewhat out of options in Chinatown and you want Canto styled food and to chi fan!

Yelp
Surprisingly, I've never been to Ruby Rouge before but it's located inside and upstairs a Chinatown plaza. We dropped in Saturday evening (around 8:30pm). The inside is massive; Chinese banquet style. We were a group of 8 but they took us without delay. Place was not busy at all. The menu is in typical Chinese style. Service was rough; we asked and double, triple checked about an allergy and they gave the okay that everything was fine. First dish they brought out had peanuts in it. No apologies or anything. Unacceptable. Trip #1 - House soup - Rice - Shanghai noodles - meh. Noodles lacked texture. - Duck with taro in coconut milk - this was pretty different. Duck was tasty. - Sweet and sour chicken - wasn't a fan. Sauce was too sweet. - Honey garlic spare ribs - pleasant texture to the ribs. - Five spice bean curd with tendon and beef - five spice is prominent and up in your face but I liked it. - Steamed chicken with bok choy - Gai lain - Black fungus with pork - Beef chow fun - we always get this dish. Much more satisfying than the Shanghai noodles. - Salted pepper pork chops - this was legit. Good spicy heat to the pork chops. - Snow peas with mushrooms and chicken Trip #2 We came on a Sunday afternoon for dim sum. What a change, the place was packed to the brim. Prices were decent; most around the $3.75 mark. - Lo bak goh - Seafood dumplings - Shrimp vegetable dumpling - Beef, beef tripe and potatoes - Beef cheung fun - Ha cheung fun - Fu jok guen - Curry beef tendon - Shrimp tofu - Fung jeow - Wo guk Standard Chinese food. Nothing stands out for dinner but dim sum is better.

Yelp
Not the best but definitely one of the cheapest considering the portions they give. I got the sweet and sour pork as well as the cantonese chow mein. The take out plates were so full that we had to transfer the food out. The taste is pretty good.

Yelp
10/10 dimsum experience, food was fresh and good, waiter was so kind, great experience other reviews don't know what they are talking about with "rude service" unresponsive aunties pushing carts is what you should look for! steamed rice roll was amazing, steamed shrimp dumpling 10/10 scallop and shrimp dumping was SO FRESH!! 10/10 shumai was crunchy and perfect amount of meat and fat, 8/10 overall great experience

Yelp
I came here with my family. We always come here because it is one of the few dim sum restaurants in Montreal. They still have carts where you can choose your dishes. You can also go to the hot tables and pick up a dish if you don't want to wait for the dim sum carts. We always have the classic dishes like pork shiu mai, shrimp hai gow, chicken feet, steamed ribs. etc. The quality is consistently good. Ruby Rouge is a very large nicely decorated restaurant. But if you come on the weekend, prepare to wait a while for a table. On the weekdays, it is not crowded. Would we come back? Yes, it is one of the few dim sum restaurants in Montreal and the food is consistently good.

Yelp
We had dinner here. Food is pretty cheap compared to SF prices. Service was ok but I want to know why our teapot came out cold. It started lukewarm and by the time dinner ended it was stone cold. Did they recycle a pot from lunch? Food was meh. I didn't think it was all that. I did like their deli appetizer plate but the bbq pork was full of fat.

Yelp
Came here a few days after Christmas with family for Dim Sum and the place wasn't too packed. It was probably due to the temperature since it was under -25C for the entire week. We got the usual fare of Dim Sum items and this is the usual place that my family would go for Dim Sum in Chinatown. The food was good (no complaints) and a lot of items that you get prior to 11am are reduced in price. Everything else that I wrote on my previous review last year applies.

Yelp
This restaurant is not staffed for a such big place. I end up have to go to the buffet area to get food. You want to have traditional shrimp dumplings and shiumai? Forget it. The food cart will never come to you. You have to chase around to find it before the cart is empty. No service. Years ago when they didn't put tables at hallway, it was not a bad restaurant. Now, it is just a dump. Never come here again. Never ! This place gives dimsum a bad name. Very disappointed. See my pictures people getting food from buffet or walk to the cart to get food themselves. Where is the service. Terrible!

Yelp
I actually came to this restaurant once as part of a tour guide package where we ate a multiple course meal and it was pretty decent. My friend recommended me this place for extremely cheap takeout so I thought I'd try some takeout for the ride back to Toronto. Here's a rundown: Food - I got the BBQ pork with rice and actually wanted to compare this BBQ pork with the one from Dobe & Andy (see my previous review). While this option was cheaper, there wasn't any bok choy. Overall I thought this was the better place as the rice wasn't too soggy (it was still subpar compared to the rice I usually eat) and it wasn't as drenched in green onion oil. The BBQ pork portions were extremely generous and it was pretty appetizing. The downside was that there wasn't much veggies and the rice wasn't that good but comparably, this place was better. Atmosphere - This place is pretty common for Chinese traditional weddings and Asian tour guide destinations and it's efficient in that there's a separate BBQ section for those wanting takeout like me. Can't really comment too much on the atmosphere except that the place is pretty traditional and old fashioned (definitely not modern). Service - I ordered takeout so the employee was good in their interaction with me, but didn't have much interaction to comment on the service here. Price - WOW this was really cheap. I paid $5 for this dish which was a steal and I ended up not even finishing it because I was so full afterwards. This is the place to go if you're on a budget. Verdict - This is better than Dobe & Andy in terms of BBQ pork and rice and I'd recommend going here for some quick takeout. I've had the course meals here before and liked it so I feel like this place is pretty standard for some Chinese cuisine. Giving this a 3 stars as the rice was a little subpar, but this was a really cheap meal and perfect for students on a budget!

Yelp
My elderly aunts and uncles love this place because it's close to the nursing home. The dim sum was terrible and the dinner was only slightly better. The shumai were dry. The taro dumplings were dry and tasteless with hardly any meat filling. I found a piece of hair in one of the dishes at dinner. The red bean dessert soup at the end was extremely sweet; I couldn't eat it even after I watered it down with some hot water. There are so many better options in Chinatown. Don't waste your money here!

Yelp
I love dim sum. I love it so much I could eat it every week. I have been going to Ruby on and off for the past few years and my 3 star rating is based on numerous lunches there. First thing first, you do not go there for service. Sometimes you will get lucky and the service will be okay, even friendly. Other times it would be bad, very bad. I choose to ignore it just because I love the food. I think their food quality changed few times, perhaps they changed the chef? The last time I have been there, I was pleasantly surprised. Every dish was almost perfect! The atmosphere can get bit stressful for the first time dim sum eater, but it's never boring that's for sure. So yes, solid 3 stars to thus place and yes I will probably come again.

Yelp
It's been a few years since my last review. Since then I've been back a couple of times and have noticed some inconsistency in their food and service. Nonetheless, they are still standing, which is more than can be said for a few other places. The latest visits really reinforced that their best dishes are the most popular ones because they don't get a chance to sit around. The more I experience dim sum outside of Montreal, the more I realize that as a city, the quality is lacking. However, there are some dishes which consistently deliver as "the best": har gow, cheung fan (any variation), and their char siu bao. You may be forgotten by a server, but this place is bustling, so it's understandable. All this being said, I haven't found a better spot yet. There's more investigating to do!

Yelp
The 7-day Tour East Bus trip that I'm traveling on stopped here; we have 50 tourists in our group. It's a meal stop so only a quickie review. The $325 meal plan includes 6 lunches and 6 dinners of which this restaurant is one of the venues. This Montreal location has dated decor. Service was very good. Washrooms were clean. The meal was based on a whole group sharing format. Food items were hot, tasty and flavourful. Overall, a four star rating from all who sat with me.

Yelp
Pretty good Chinese food. We had a variety of old traditional Cantonese dishes and they were great. $160CAN included tax and tip for lobster, Chinese broccoli, pork with salted fish, greens with pork, tofu, flat noodles with beef and black beans sauce, oxtail clay pot and the house soup and rice. Perfect for 7 of us. Good down home cooking!

Yelp
Arrived at 10am on a Wednesday morning to enjoy some dim sum before we headed back to NJ. Read reviews on Yelp indicating that if we dined before 11AM then most items would be $2. Sounded like a great idea until we actually sat down. Never have I ever experienced such terrible service AND dim sum. What went wrong: SERVICE - the hostess placed us at a table and not one person came by to bring us tea or water. Where is our server? I saw one lady and asked if I could get some ice water and tea for my hubby. She stated that we're not her table and then she walked off. I flagged her down TWICE and she told us again that we're not her table. The second time it looked like she was going to bring us something to drink, but never came back. What is the point of having servers and dedicated sections if it's just ONE server with ONE specific section and not willing to provide service to other tables? I saw a ton of servers/bussers/helpers, but they were all on the other side of the restaurant tending to other tables or just doing random things. Finally a lady who pushes the carts came up to us and took our drink orders. We asked one guy for some chili sauce and he totally ignored my hubby's request and continued to set up tables and tend to other guests. I couldn't believe that that actually happened. Towards the end of our meal, a younger server helper came by and started providing us with some decent service. FOOD - there are 3 carts that they occasionally push around. They served har gow (shrimp dumplings), shu mai (pork and shrimp dumplings), veggie dumplings, beef meatballs, spare ribs, chicken feet, beef rice noodle rolls, BBQ pork rice noodle rolls, shrimp rice noodle rolls, congee, and steamed rice w/ dried shrimp and lap cheong sausage. This was the only items they had in the carts. Everything was $2 or $2.50. I had to get up several times if I wanted to try their steamed rice dish or order congee. Eventually they started to come out with different items (shrimp & chive dumplings, egg rolls). By this time I was so upset and aggravated that I was ready to get the hell out of this restaurant. I did not want to spend anymore time or money at this restaurant. The food was mediocre. The 1 star is dedicated to the only 2 decent tasting items which was the BBQ pork rice noodle roll and congee. I will NEVER EVER return back to this place. I hate to say it, but if you're not Chinese, the service you MIGHT receive will be minimal and most likely nonexistent. They truly cater to their own people and don't care about anyone else. I would have rather paid 3x more for good dim sum and better service than to have wasted my morning coming here and ruining my last day in Montreal. I've never felt more ignored in my life. I've dined at many dim sum restaurants in many different cities/states and never have I ever experienced anything remotely like this. I can't imagine what it would be like on a weekend or after their special $2 dim sum items. I guess it's true what they say....you definitely get what you pay for which wasn't much.

Yelp
Restaurant Ruby Rouge is found in Montreal's small Chinatown. My aunt wanted to take us to a Chinese restaurant that serves Dim Sum. This was not her first choice, but the place she wanted to take us was closed. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the building. It is a very large restaurant. The place was packed that day we visited. We were seated right away, but that is as good as the service got for us. It was one of the worst service that I have ever experienced at a restaurant. Very very unfriendly!! Very very slow as well. Took forever for the carts full of goodies to reach us. Once they did reach us, the food we tried was just decent at best. The Spare Ribs, Shrimp, Shao Mai, Calamari, Chicken or maybe it was Duck Feet, Eggplant, and everything else were all disappointing to average. Maybe we just picked the wrong choices. More than likely, the bad service from the beginning was leaving a sour taste in all of our mouths. I would not return here based on our awful experience.

Yelp
Worst dimsum I've ever had! Varieties are very limited, those routine dim-sum need to be ordered and wait for 30 min. one dish we ordered taste like it's gone bad! Asked a plastic bad for the to-go box, and they charge it for .10! I didn't leave any tip, and the waitress chased me to the street asked for tip!

Yelp
Better dim sum than expected! The har gow was perfectly cooked and hadn't been sitting around too long. We had a smattering of other plates too which were decent enough. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the mood for dim sum.

Yelp
I ordered 15 eggrolls from this restaurant through UberEats - that's all I wanted. On the app, it indicates if you buy $30 of food you get a 'free gift'. I bought exactly $30 (pre tax, pre fees) and no free gift. The eggrolls are tiny. Won't order from this restaurant again.

Yelp
When I was having trouble finding Montreal's most famous Dim Sum restaurant, a la Maison Kum Fung, I ended up stumbling to this banquet style restaurant, which came recommended to me by some Chinatown locals. It's located on the 2nd floor of a Chinatown mall, where it was an absolute zoo when I arrived. The stairs were filled with patrons all waiting for their number to be called and the crowd only got thicker with every stair step to the top. There was almost little-to-no room to move and getting to the front to collect a number felt like an impossibility. Not to mention I had 10 people with me and no reservation. I some how made my way to the front, where I managed to play nice with the manager, who was busy handing out numbers to folks. A crowd of close to 100 became a crowd of no more than 15 in a matter of minutes, due to the diligent seat assigning from the hostess. Talk about a deceiving wait, I almost convinced the group to leave for another restaurant but was glad I stuck it out. My group was given a nice private room overlooking the restaurant and not a moment too soon, since we were all starving. Service was a little overwhelmed and was not able to clean our table or get food to us right away. The staff was a little slow and getting attention to the room was marred by the fact they almost seemed too busy to tend to us. Eventually the Dim Sum ladies wheeled their carts into room and managed to serve us heaping plates of Dim Sum goodies. While most of them spoke some broken French / English, most of them had a tougher time speaking Cantonese than they did Mandarin. Food portions here are ginormous. I've never seen Dim Sum in bulk like this, not even in the South where everything was fatter and greasier. The wu gok (fried taro dumplings) looked like they were the size of grenades and when stacked on top of eachother, looked like a hairy nest of eggs or unpeeled kiwi fruits. Ha Cheung (shrimp crepe) and Ha Gao (shrimp dumplings) were both also massive, to the point where it took only a few dishes to make everyone full. Zha Hai Kieu (fried crab claws) reminded me of jawbreakers and the Siu Mai was plenty thick with more meat than rice wrap. Bigger isn't always better though, as most of the food was just adequate enough not to be mediocre. I prefered most of the cart items than fetching items from the long table in the banquet hall area. Most of those plates looked old and overly greasy. Given the price and the portions, I think I could stomach another visit here in the future. The final bill was a modest one, which came out to be $120CAD for roughly 10 people. Surely the same Dim Sum rules still apply - come hungry, get a good spot, and arrive before noon. A reservation here probably doesn't hurt either, something of which I'll consider next time I bring a big group.

Yelp
I come here all the time with friends for dim sum and dinner. This place is the best restaurant for Chinese food in Montreal by far. It also seems to be the largest in the downtown core. Their dim sum is always packed on the weekend and finding a seat may require waiting a bit. Also they hold a lot of weddings here on the weekend, so finding dinner tables isn't that easy either. The good thing though is they are open late, and you can always come by after a night of drinking to order fresh dim sum or lobster! The staff have always been friendly and kind to me. Some of the best service in Chinatown by far. They are attentive and always come by quick to fill up our tea pots. Also they usually give me a 15% discount when I pay cash. Not sure if that's a perk just for regular customers or if everyone is able to use it. The food is great, some of the best you can get around Montreal. In the summer they usually have a lobster special, which is 2 lobsters for $20. A great deal if you pair it with some rice, you and a friend are set! I will keep coming back here as long as they service and food are great! Chinatown's best by far!

Yelp
Compared to Maison Kam Fung, I was happier dining at Ruby Rouge for the traditional dim sum brunching. You walk into a small shopping mall, and as soon as you come off of the staircase you will appear in the center of the banquet hall. This can be rather intimidating if you arrive during a busy hour and there are people waiting everywhere. If you arrive between 10:00-11:00am, then you should have no problem getting nice seating. By 11:30am, they were officially slammed with customers and there was a wait. They do have many tables for two and four, so sharing a table should not be a necessity if you arrive in time. The set-up here is slightly different than any banquet hall dim sum dining experience I have had so far. Mostly because of the layout and how you acquire the food. Hot tea is complimentary. Speaking in French is best, because some staff does not speak any English. You will need a "runner" for your table if there are specific items you are looking for or you want the best items fast. The runner for my table was me, of course. There is a bar with noodles and desserts, you will need to bring your bill ticket and request those items to have them fresh and carry them back to your table. The meats are also carved at that same counter on the spot at your request with your ticket. The pork here was sensational and came with a side of minced scallion sauce. The soy sauce noodles were also good. The crullers are here, but the congee is on cart. Don't get me wrong, there are still carts going around all over the place, but the Montreal culture is much different, so you will not have cart "pushers" like you would in other cities. You will need to ask for the items or ask to see what is on the cart, otherwise they will not bother you. I am used to NYC, where staff will just put random food on your table and say, "Eat! You will like it!" Nothing like that happens in Montreal, and the pace is much easier. Vegetables are sometimes needed to break up all of the gluten and meat eaten, asking for ong choi or gai lan is recommended. It took us a while to receive our totaled bill and paying at the front counter is a must. They do accept credit cards, but you will want to tip in cash. Best of luck to you in your food gathering!

Yelp
I am giving this place 4.5 stars. One of my fave Chinese restaurants and definitely my go to place for dimsum. Prices are very reasonable, portions are big, I just wish they were a BIT more consistent with the quality of the food. Also, out of all the dimsum places I have tried in Montreal , Ruby Rouge is definitely my favourite. It's not the best I've ever had but it's definitely good. I visit at least once a week. :)

Yelp
If you are looking for a traditional dim sum restaurant. Look no further, Ruby Rouge hits the spot! While it is situated in an older mall, once you go up the stairs you will notice that this restaurant is full of regular Chinese OGs (Respectable older Chinese people) that are regular guests. They are usually found reading newspaper and sipping Chinese tea! The point mentioned above outlines the authenticity of this spot. Now to the food. Growing up Vancouver, I would say I had better dim sum for sure. However it's average and meets my expectation for the most part. The Shrimp Dumpling Har Gou is descent, and their beef rice rolls are tasty! As stated in other reviews, the prices are extremely competitive and dim sum are priced at 2.30 - 4.25 per dish. If you are looking for an average dim sum spot to fulfil your Chinese taste buds - at a bit of a run down location - here's the spot!

Yelp
This place was great! Open on Christmas Day. Super super busy but the service was fantastic and the food very fresh. Our family enjoyed our lunch very much.

Yelp
As an ABC, this is my go-to dimsum place in Montreal. My five starving buddies and I feasted here and absolutely loved the signature "Cantonese Chow Mein" for a ridiculously good value of $8.75 CAD for a huge plate. Pro tips: 1. Sit in the main dining room to get more dim sum carts to swing by. We were placed in the annex and it sucked. 2. There's free coffee by the buffet area so it's time to get hydrated.

Yelp
Well the place has not changed much in 10 years . They are known for Dim Sum .We got there late 2:30 pm on Saturday. The place was empty . This is Chinese New Year weekend . That should have been a sign. They had a small menu which we ordered from but it is not the same as picking from the carts. They had only one cart and the food was cold. Overall disappointed but we will come next time around noon.

Yelp
We have not been to Montreal from the US for three years due to Covid. We had been to Ruby Rouge on previous trips for dim sum, but never for dinner. My husband loves Peking Duck, and since our favorite place for this was now charging $75 for it due to a duck shortage, we decided to give this place a try because the price seemed reasonable. We have had Peking Duck at several restaurants, and it always consisted of pancakes with duck skin, hoisin sauce, sliced scallions and pickled daikon first then a remaining duck and vegetable stir fry. Ruby Rouge's menu says that the Peking Duck is a 3 course meal - soup, pancakes, sliced duck. No duck/vegetable stir fry. Evidently, they consider the pancakes a course? We decided to skip it and ordered wonton soup, fried rice and a pork dish that was described as BBQ sliced pork with XO sauce. Waiter had no idea what XO sauce was. The wonton soup was terrible. Broth was tepid at best and the wontons were cold. The filling had no flavor whatsoever. A few shreds of some kind of crunchy vegetable. The pork dish looked nothing like what was described on the menu and by the waiter. Pork did not looked BBQed and was tough. Was mixed with green beans and a few chopped onions. Very disappointing. We were the only people in the restaurant. Our waiter disappeared. I had to go hunting for him to get water. I found him sitting in another room separating wonton wrappers. We had finally had enough of this place and decided to leave. Had to hunt down the MIA waiter again for check and take-out containers. When he finally brought out both, I had to ask for fortune cookies, which were brought and thrown down on the table. Have to say this is the worst restaurant experience and meal we have ever had in any restaurant in Montreal.

Yelp
I am a regular at Kam Fung and this place serves pretty good dim sum. The service is a little bit off. The day i come on lunch time, the place is not packed but the food is good. I personnally will go back. The location is a little hard To find since you have To go through the main door of a shopping mall, go up a stair and you Will find the restaurant. Overall, this place is a good place To go instead of the popular Kam Fung place.

Yelp
Love to come here for dim sum! They also have awesome char siu and duck available at a cheap price for take out. Service is okay, don't expect anything too fabulous. This is a great please to come eat with family or friends to share plates. I come here at least once a month and I never leave without a full belly! Recommend :)

Yelp
Pretty basic dim sum to satisfy dim sum brunch needs. Came here quite a few times for dim sum. Food quality is decent, but I've definitely had better (coming from toronto) I would've liked if they had a greater variety and more of the dim sum classics. They have a bunch of Cantonese dishes that aren't dim sum but you can get a small plate. The place is pretty big, but they don't have that many carts. A lot of the food is found at a buffet style area where you ask the person behind the counter to grab you an order. The system is fine, but it takes away from the whole cart experience. The general atmosphere is great though! Lots of energy, TVs playing the toronto Cantonese channel, and lots of the familiar dim sum noises. You can't expect too much in terms of service, but they do the job efficiently. The prices are also pretty reasonable, I believe they have a discount if you get food before 11am.

Yelp
Decent place for dim sum. The cart experience needs to be refurbished. The place is big and not many carts pass by. You often need to get up and pick yourself your dishes. Waitresses are stressed, they really need some help. There's a buffet place but with many people out there it is kind of messy. Price is good. I've ordered a lot of food for 3 people and we paid $40, tips included. As there's just one other dim sum place in Montreal, I would say it's ok to go to Ruby Rouge. It's subpar compared to Toronto.

Yelp
Worst dim sum place in Montreal. Siu Mai was bland, actually- most of the dishes we ordered were. The shrimp dumpling's skin was too thick. The chicken feet was okay. I feel that the quality went down over the years. Another thing I noticed - there were Chinese customers who arrived after us and were served first. Disappointing. Well, at least it was cheaper than other places (Kam Fung and Imperial).

Yelp
Huuuuge location but this is probably the place to have dim sum if you are in Montreal. It was sooo awesome, the wait staff speaks Chinese, English and FRENCH. very cool! Anyways, the dimsum is the usual, point and they will serve to you. Also there are stations where you order, bring your tab to be stamped and then bring your plate back. All are share-able. Everything here was pretty fresh and tasty. It is also a huge space, as well. This is like the largest dimsum restaurant in Montreal! Once in a while, it's good to have a little tasting of everything so the dim sum concept works well for that.

Yelp
For a sunday dim sum brunch, the service is friendly and fast. It is important to get here early to get a good spot, the bigger dinning room, gets the the first service, Deep fried tofu was a bit too dry for my delicate taste buds and it tasted overcooked & carbonated. My favorite dish is the Guyland, it always takes the longest to order, usually a 10 to 15 minute wait for the Guyland. It still worth it, to take break from all the MSg.

Yelp
We ordered pork dumplings and they had shrimp with no indication on the menu that there was seafood in the dish. Apparently most dishes have shrimp in them even if the menu does not mention it. Very dangerous if you are allergic. How hard is it to put a symbol beside all the dishes that have seafood in it? When we were served the spare ribs, they were half fat and grey looking. Not appetizing at all. The waitress made us pay for it even though we did not eat it and they were far below acceptable standards. She even admitted that they were not quality controlled by the kitchen. All she did was give us excuses. If you're not Asian, you will not receive great service. They will give you the bare minimum. They will not care about you. We were the only non-Asians in the room and the quality of our food looked way worse than the tables near us. I will never return to this place. Not even for a free meal.
