The 18 Best Restaurants in Helsinki | Eater

"Helsinki’s Old Market Hall has been around for around 130 years, but inside the historic exterior you will find Story, a bright cafe and restaurant with a fresh Baltic vibe. Located in the South Harbour near the bustling Esplanadi park and Market Square, the cafe is the ideal place to stop for a quick cup of coffee from the local Kaffa Roastery, or a full breakfast like oven-baked porridge with berry compote or perhaps an eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, spinach, and hollandaise sauce. For lunch, avocado lovers opt for the Wögä burger, which ambitiously features avocado halves as buns, and wash it down with a glass of rosé. [$-$$]" - Ilkka Sirén

Google
Excellent customer service, super tasty salmon soup. I warmly recommend this place. Especially because nobody came to complain when I sat down with all our shopping bags while my husband dealt with the order. The dill oil is a nice addition to the salmon soup! Very democratic prices also.

Google
I came specifically for the salmon soup, and it turned out to be one of the best I had during my visit to Helsinki. It was fresh, simple, and had a light creamy texture that I really enjoyed. The place is located inside the market, which made it quite warm with limited airflow — not the most comfortable setting during summer. However, the tables were clean, and the service was friendly and efficient.

Google
Restaurant Story in Helsinki's Old Market delivers a fantastic take on traditional salmon soup—rich, hearty, and served in generous portions with free bread refills. The staff are warm and welcoming, and the setting is both cozy and lively. Great food, friendly service, and a lovely atmosphere—what’s not to like?

Google
What a disappointment! Breakfast eggs Benedict is one small bread with two eggs and two slices of bacon with dressing. This delicacy is 14 EUR! This doesn't include juice, coffee or anything else. Total robbery!

Google
Tasty desserts and wonderful filter coffee with free refills. I have had some coffee in Helsinki which was twice the price of this one and not as good. So definitely recommend stopping by. Plenty of open plan seating. So easy to visit with children.

Google
Really nice place with a variety of different foods inside of that building. Everything you want from Finland is there.

Google
Late lunch after the big rush makes this place quieter and calmer. Maybe that's also why the pasta is a bit overcooked but... My apologies to all the Italians out there but I kind of like it like that 🫣 Love the rhubarb lemonade, LOVE IT ❤️ Great and friendly staff who take good care of their customers 😊

Google
Salmon Soup €16,90 is extremely salty, close to being inedible. The salmon and potato pieces save themselves. In hindsight I would have skipped it altogether

Yelp
This was our favorite place for fish soup after being in Helsinki for 3 days. The order did take a while to come out, but thankfully we had some wine to sip on. The soup itself was very tasty and creamy, with lots of fish, making it a good portion to share.

Yelp
A great breakfast spot in the harbor district of Helsinki. The food was fresh and authentic Finnish fare. The place is charming.

Yelp
Options are very limited here. People mainly get the salmon soup or a pastry + coffee. What's great is that its located right inside Vanha Kauppahalli (market vendors) with more great snack options. The salmon soup was amazing! The loads of potatoes was cooked perfectly and chunks of fatty salmon gave it bursts of flavor. The soup itself, is kind of like a clam chowder but much more liquidy and lighter. Free refills on coffee and soup came with bread!

Yelp
Story is a cute little spot in the middle of the Old Market. We ordered two bowls of salmon soup and some extra bread on the side. A really nice lunch for a cold autumn day. The service is quick and friendly, and they offer both coffee and alcohol drinks. The sitting area is nice and near the windows where you can look out over the harbor.

Yelp
Great spot in the middle of the Old Market. Filled with light and good coffee and food.

Yelp
This was a really cool place that was located smack in the middle of the old market. We had been passed it a couple of times, but finally decided to stop in one afternoon when we needed some quick food, that wasn't fast food. This is a great spot for it! They have a number of different options for lunch, including salmon soup, Muscles and pasta, as well as a number of salads and sandwiches. They also have plenty of caffeinated beverages, which was perfect for a cold and sleepy afternoon. They have seating on either side of the storefront, with seating for roughly 40 people total. The food was very good, and while a bit on the expensive side, it was certainly worth it for the quality. The ladies working here were always pleasant, and the food was brought out quickly While remaining aesthetically pleasing! This was one of our favorite stops for lunch, and aside from the point when our six-year-old threw a fit, slammed his head back and cut his scalp open on a wooden beam behind him, the whole time was lovely! If you're in the market, you can't miss this place, and if you're hungry, it's definitely worth stopping to check out!

Yelp
A little slow but such a great spot. Convenient place to grab a quick bite to eat. Hubs had a burger and lemonade. I opted for the salmon soup and a glass of bubbles. The salmon soup is what dreams are made of. I never thought I would like a fish soup, but I am going to try and recreate at home. Not to heavy, healthy and delicious! We also shared a sugar bun for dessert. One is definitely enough for two to split as it is very rich! Tip - you can also use the tables to eat anything bought from the market! So don't be afraid to pull up a chair!

Yelp
Swung by the market to grab some food before heading out to one of the nearby islands. This market in general is awesome, lots of options. Didn't see any food, meal wise that was our fancy so we pressed and picked up a snack at another spot and then swung back by here. They have beer on tap and some SOLID desserts, must be a euro thing. But went with the traditional finish cinnamon role, it was good, a little dry but non-the-less very good. Of note, just like the state's, if you want to sit down here you'll need to order something. Recommend if you don't see anything you like or are feeling, check out the rest the market and then reattack this place for their coffee, beer, and desserts. I'd check it out for sure if you find yourself in Helsinki!

Yelp
An absolutely beautiful space with delicious food. My friend and I came here for breakfast during our one day in Helsinki. We had a lovely view of the harbor and both of our omelettes were absolutely incredible, and same goes for our coffee. Plus it's right next to a little market with all sorts of different Finnish food and gifts!! I wish I had a place like this near me because I would love to try their lunch options!!

Yelp
Delicious food! Definitely worth a stop if you're in town. It's located in the Old Market, half way down the building. Salmon omelette is more of a smoked salmon over scrambled eggs. Nonetheless, a must try! The eggs are made with ricotta cheese and are super creamy and smooth. It's topped with dill, smoked salmon, and fish eggs. The pastries are so great. There is one that looks like a bear claw, with cinnamon and almonds. If you're looking for coffee, ask for the Regular coffee. This is what Americans know as drip coffee :) the best part is that the drip is unlimited, so help yourself to as many cups that you'd like. If it's not raining, grab a seat outdoors and watch the boast go in and out while you're enjoying brunch.

Yelp
Very tasty salmon soup, came with side of seed filled bread and butter. Coffee was a bit pricey though it was also tasty and the refills of the drip coffee were nice. Staff was friendly and spoke great English.

Yelp
This is a cafe and restaurant is in the center of the old market hall, where a stroll throughout the aisles leaves you hungry for food. The design is trendy and nice, with lots of wood and somber colors. We were there on a busy Friday afternoon, still busy after the lunch rush, and the dessert goods were running out. We ordered salmon soup and mussels. After ordering and paying you're left with a plate with bread and a tiny cube with a number on it for your order. Pick up your cutlery and water by a sideboard and find a seat. The seats in the center of the market hall seem to be used by all customers in the hall - even for the ones bringing their own stuff. This results in the place needing more bussing during the time we were there, lots of dirty dishes and tables that needed some attention. Over all, the place seemed a bit understaffed for a summery lunch peak. The food was very tasty. The mussels had a great curry and coconut flavor with the added cilantro, and a can with potato chips (not fries). The waiter asked if I wanted an extra bowl with lemon water to wash my fingers before and after the meal. A great gesture and a very nice detail. The service has some room for improvement in my eyes, where most of it relates to more people. Coming after the lunch peak lead to service being a bit slow, but there were things that should be taken care of to let more customers have a place to be seated.

Yelp
Great cakes and coffee and tea set to Perfection Where does one get a cup of tea with an ice cube to cool the water back down to 90 degrees in order to draw the right flavor out of green tea ? ...atmosphere is great too as in the old market , go and have bouillabaisse next door and your cake here...divine!!

Yelp
Visiting the city and came here to try the creamy salmon soup. The bowl of soup was €14 and it was absolutely delicious! It came with a side of bread which was very flavourful. Would definitely come back!

Yelp
It has everything under one roof, quaint booths with bakeries filled with Danish pasteries next to home made soaps, coffee and dozens of food selections. Everything was delicious. I was only in Finland for the day so Story was a great way to see the culture and talk with the people.

Yelp
Had the burg with the meat patty. Unfortunately the meat was undercooked and too raw. The burger was served without fries which is also a minus

Yelp
Simple, quiet, and delicious. The salmon omelette was incredibly fresh, exploding with flavor at every bite. My girlfriend got the pancakes, providing a nice contrast. Coffee was great, and my salmon stuffed bread roll was amazing. Really, it's all good here, and the waterfront view only makes it that much better.

Yelp
Quite a good spot. Their salmon soup is very good, and the scrambled eggs on a black croissant sandwich is also very good. Seems like a good option from those in the market.

Yelp
Beautiful location in an old market building by the Helsinki harbor Great Coffee and the best cinnamon roll in one day and a great pint of local ale the next

Yelp
Delicious traditional Finnish salmon soup, and the burger wasn't bad either!! Their bread is superb, only reason I took a point off was that there wasn't much salmon in the soup for the price (14 euros), and my burger didn't look like the other Story burgers I saw around me, with avocado and red pepper. Mine was pretty standard, which I wasn't aware would be the case. Anyhow, the location is great, on the water with a lovely market containing it!!

Yelp
With the rennovated Vanha Kauppahalli a new gem came to Helsinki. Ravintola Story is located right in the middle of the old market hall and is a wonderful place for a break on your grocery shopping tour. Story offers delicious smaller and bigger treats. You can have a filling handmade burger or some cocos curry clams accompanied by a glass of wine of their wide selection from small wineries from around the world. Or just go for some sweet or salty freshly baked pastry together with a cup of coffee. All the food is for take away as well as to have there. But take the time and suck in the athmosphere of the beautiful old market hall while enjoying your food. Watch the people pass by or look out onto the harbor through the big windows. Check it out and enjoy!

Yelp
I had a cappuccino. Velvety smooth and nice strong coffee flavour. The creamy salmon soup was excellent with large chunks of fish potatoes and dill in a cream base. Very tasty! Service was friendly as well. More expensive than the nearby outdoor market but quality is much much better!

Yelp
the cutest little cafe inside the old market hall - great decor and design. what we ate: - open faced salmon sandwich: loved the smoke salmon on this sandwich - open faced shrimp sandwich: the shrimp salad was a bit too sweet - almond cake: light and airy, great texture - omelette w/salami: pretty normal but not a bad omelette - coffee: would rather order coffee from robert's coffee (also in the old market hall) a great place to stop for a quick breakfast or snack. so convenient and beautiful - and the location is perfect if you're planning to browse some of the other market stalls.
