"Situated in the heart of Petite France with its picture postcard half-timbered houses, this restaurant combines flavours from near and far. Its name suggests as much: umami is the fifth flavour in Japanese cuisine, alongside sweet, sour, bitter and salty. A keen globetrotter, chef René Fieger signs market-fresh cuisine scattered with exoticism, yet solidly rooted in tradition. The chef is entirely alone in the kitchen, conjuring up dishes that delight. Highlights include a slab of halibut, finely diced yellow and green courgettes, sliced green beans and an acidic, slightly creamy dashi-kefir dressing." - Michelin Inspector

We had two vegetarian lunch menus with one wine and one non-alcoholic pairing and were very happy with the experience. We had a question about the vegetarian menu and called shortly in advance. We were able to reach someone right away who was very helpful. The dining area of the restaurant is small which makes it very cozy and the interior design is calming. The food was delicious and the presentation nice. Portion sizes were the perfect size making us full after the three courses (+ amuse bouche). Unfortunately, our tummies were too full for the cheese plate. There was one person serving the tables who was very polite and did her job very well.

1 star restaurant. There is a big influence of Japanese taste for meals and decorations. But less for lunch. Of you prefer more influence of Japanese, I shall recommend for dinner. I enjoyed more a mouse bouche and entre.

After a long drive from Munich following the close of Oktoberfest, I arrived in Strasbourg feeling exhausted and unsure if I could truly enjoy an evening out. But our dinner at Umami was so inspiring that three hours flew by in what felt like just thirty minutes. Chef René and Jessica have created something truly special here. They run the restaurant completely on their own—Jessica providing warm, attentive, flawless service while her husband works magic in the tiniest kitchen I have ever seen. The teamwork, passion, and care they put into every detail are palpable. We enjoyed the multicourse dinner, and each dish lived up to the restaurant’s name—umami in every sense. The flavors and textures were balanced, surprising, and deeply satisfying. From start to finish, the meal was a journey of creativity and precision. This is not just dining—it’s a rare, intimate experience that shows what can happen when two people pour their hearts into their craft. Thank you, Chef René and Jessica, for giving us an evening that far exceeded our expectations. I will remember this dinner for a very long time and cannot recommend Umami enough.

Relaxed and friendly family owned Michelin star restaurant. The lunch menu is a treat - great value!

One of the best Michelin star meals I've ever had. All the more impressive knowing that there is only one chef in the kitchen making the entire meal for all 16 of his guests. There is also only one server. Truly incredible, and also the best value for any Michelin restaurant ever. I had venison, lobster, monkfosh, and steak, in addition to dessert, two amuses, and delicious bread, all for just 87 euros. Can't be beat, and I've been to over 50 Michelin restaurants!

Fantastic. This is of my all-time favorite Michelin Star restaurants that I've been to. Everything had a unique taste, texture, and presentation. Beautiful restaurant, limited seating approx 16 seats total.

Yelp
We arrived in Strasbourg for the Easter weekend and got a half a day to ourselves before meeting up with friends for dinner. We wondered through the Le Petit France, and I was telling my partner about the Le Cord de Lange as a lunch option (the place I discovered when I was in Strasbourg last year), but as we walked closer, I saw the sign I recognized- Michelin star. We saw the menu and decided that that will be the place for us today. After 40 minutes waiting for them to open for lunch, we walked back right at noon, to see few people ahead of us being seated. We were not that hungry, so we agreed to share steak tartare, and each got a main dish, followed by a desert. Steak tartare was the best I ever had in my life! Loved it! My partner had a duck breast, and I had fish. Both were delicate and cooked so well! The fish (cod) with crispy skin, with bok choy and the cream butter sauce, was marvelous. For the dessert, he ordered the strawberry soup with the dragon fruit soufflé and the vanilla ice cream. Amazing! As we left the restaurant, I messaged my friends about Umami and told they have to visit, and learned that apparently, it's not that easy. With only seven tables they get booked fast. So if you are lucky to walk in like us, grab a seat and enjoy your meal

Yelp
Perfect peaceful and intimate atmosphere, excellent lunchtime meal, wonderful service. Our favorite spot in our whirlwind stay in Strasbourg. Had the three course fixe menu. Asparagus and curry soup, sole, Tuna, beef along with the wine paring. All wonderful. Strongly suggest a stop at Umami while in Strasbourg. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I was lucky to get in to Umami. Jessica was extremely gracious from the first moment, and the rest of the evening was memorable. The food was exceptional -- from the opening amuse bouche through the four course Menu Sakura (at 50 euros) to the closing gelee. In particular the catch of the day -- cod, served on black rice in a curry sauce -- was cooked to perfection, with crisp skin, juicy flesh, and well balanced flavors. Although I should have gotten the wine pairing, I did well with one glass of Alsatian muscat and a tea from Marriage Freres. I also appreciated that Jessica made me feel welcome as a single guest; good company was also provided by a Swiss couple dining at the next table. If you want a truly excellent meal in a relaxed setting, this is certainly a place to get it.
