2 Dozen of Montreal’s Best Middle Eastern Restaurants - Eater Montreal

"Saffron predominates at this snug, candlelit Iranian establishment in NDG, which pairs grilled kebabs with saffron-topped basmati rice, and even offers saffron ice cream for dessert. Adding to the flavour palette are marinades such as walnut-and-pomegranate paste. Their appetizers are equally engaging, with yogurt-based sauces and vegetarian options such as grilled aubergine." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

We were for lunch and ordered Soltani and kebab Torsh. I believe that their Barg kebab is a legend! It was the first Iranian cuisine which asked us how to cook our kebab. The meat of both Barg and Torsh kebab was fillet mignon and It was so juicy and tender. The service was great and the owners were so kind and sociable. They served us a bowl of soup as a welcome starter which the taste was so nostalgic. I highly recommend to have Masto Moosir.

Absolutely love this restaurant. Been a few times over the years. Everything is so good and the owners are always friendly. Plus they have my favorite Iranian dessert, falooda, which I can’t find in other restos in the city.

I came in when they just opened their doors for the day and no one was there. Very nice atmosphere and I enjoyed interior decor which set the mood. The food is a little pricey but very delicious. Every dish was tasty and succulent and spiced just right. It was not spicy but amazing. I have to say the Mirza eggplant appetizer was definitely a hit and my favorite thing was the basmati rice with extra butter. The rice was perfectly cooked and I loved every bite. My chicken thighs were perfectly marinated and tasted great. For me they were a tad dry but still delicious. I would definitely go back there again when I come back to visit. The taste of food was amazing and delicious.

There service was good. The grilled meats were really good. The Torsh is an exotic find, it's a bit sweet and sour. The beef koobideh is made exceptionally well. The lamb shank is good as well, a little different than the usual find at other Iranian restaurants. They also have home made saffron ice cream. You will find dishes that are not found in other Montreal restaurants, make sure to ask for specials. My Iranian friends tried their special of the day, Deezi, where they serve you in a pot, from which you have drain the liquid onto a bowl, then mash the meat veg and lentils before eating. The interior has exposed brick and hanging copper utensils, giving a warm feel. Since it's semi basement there are no windows. I need to go back to try their barg and Cornish hens.

It was one of the best Kale pache (meal soup) I've experienced in a long time. Delicious mixed pickles, along with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I'll come back here again :)

Good Pacha and loved it. They don't serve it like flat plate that you see in the pictures and I wish if they do but it was in a bowl. They mention tip as you are paying and if you leave cash tip then they grab it as you are still finishing food. Over all is good for Kale Pacha because we have not tried anything else.

If you’re on a budget, save your money and hold off for a couple weeks. Everything here is fresh and absolutely incredible. The owners are friendly and as a French Canadian, I have no idea what I’m ordering. They are so helpful and will explain every dish. You have to try the soup, rice and the stuffed vine leaves. I keep going back. I’m just mad at myself for living so close, walking by and never trying it out for almost 3 years. Im glad I did. Once covid is over, Im looking forward to going with a group a friends and having the true dinning experience.

Yelp
Came here early with kids and had the place to ourselves. Food was made to order from scratch and was fantastic. Combination of familiar middle eastern fare with some flavorful dishes I'd never seen. Service is a bit slow if you're with kids but it's hardly a fault that they prepare the food tonight order.

Yelp
The worst service and food you can ever have. I have lived in Montreal for 43 years and i have never seen such unprofessional service in my whole life. Very rude, extremely rude, poor quality of food. Food portion very small very bad quality. But to be honest the worst was the service. They charge you 15% for service, that would be fine if they actually give service. Not once did they pour a glass of water. The table did not have wine glasses, which is weird since it's a bring your own wine. So you should have wine glasses for everyone. The host had ordered appetizers for everyone so not everyone wanted to eat, so when someone wouldn't order they owner would yell at them, pointing fingers saying this person didn't eat. There was a couple who wanted to order one plate for bother, Farideh khanoom screamed at them and said they had to order. No where does is this mentioned. Just a very bad experience, she called some guest out because they didn't want to eat and told others to leave. Who does that??? She charged extra meals on my bill, I had two bargs and she charged me 3, i paid it only after I realized she had charged me 3 bargs. It is really sad that you try to support Iranian business and support your community and they end up using and screwing their customers. Farideh khanoom and Mr Izadi you should be ashamed of yourselves and instead of trying to defend your horrible manners try to have better service and a better rapport with your clients. If it was up to me I would give you -10 stars

Yelp
Good authentic persian food. I did enjoy the food, the rice with saffron was full of flavours. I did see some reviews with burnt kebabs .. personally I didn't have that experience. It was well cooked and enjoyed them very much. For those who like spicy ask for the "home made" spice sauce. I even took some to go ;) it was that good. It's family owned and I found them friendly and welcoming. Service was a bit slow but nothing really to be disappointed about. The restaurant is very charming, it has the appeal of a wine cellar and the earth tone brick, stone and tile. Street parking is available, or use Metro Vendome.

Yelp
Me and my family are traveling to Montreal from Boston. This was a great place to discover, the food pleased everyone in my family. Usually, I can never finish my meal. But, today, there was nothing left on my plate. My daughter got Abghosht and it came in the stew and she could separate the soup and she mashed the ingredients together. She enjoyed the experience very much. My son got kabob torsh, he ate it all and loved it very much. His girlfriend got boneless chicken and rice and she has only had Persian food twice before and she said she really enjoyed it. My wife got the lamb shank she said it was amazing and delicious.

Yelp
We travel from US to Montreal for our Vacation. We visited the restaurant and ordered our foods. We really enjoyed our food with the great flavored and authentic taste. I want to mention a Persian food is NOT a fast food so please be patient and enjoy your own wine while your tasty amazing food is prepared by the owner of the restaurant. The restaurant also serves Persian vegetarians amazing food. I recommend this place to everyone.

Yelp
This restaurant serves Iranian halal food and was recommended to us by an Iranian. We were a group of 7 and had lunch here. I tried their grilled beef which was served with rice. The taste is amazing - smoky, tender and tasty. For dessert, we opted for their ice cream and ended with Persian tea. Service was attentive and our server was helpful in recommending dishes. You can bring your own wines. Definitely returning here with my family.

Yelp
Food was average but the owners or managers are just so entitled and rude... the customer service and respect are non existent in this place. By far, the worst customer service I got in a lifetime. I will never ever go back there. Just to put it out there: One tips only if they are happy with the service, and no one is obliged to pay extra if they are not happy with what they get. The lady made a scene when I did not want to tip them and embarrassed me in front of my friends... I hate it when people are so cheap, arrogant, and entitled!

Yelp
This review is long overdue. My family and I are regular patrons at this restaurant and we just love it! We love the warm, cozy atmosphere and graciousness of the owners. We've even had them cater parties at our home and events that we have had. Their food is so tasty and our guests always ask us where we got our food from. If you are ever in the area, check them out!

Yelp
Very dissapointed by the kebab and taste (low quality beef with poor seasoning). Restaurant is quiet with almost no customers, which was a plus.

Yelp
Hello, I am writing this review because as a food admirer, I have to tell the truth. As an Iranian, I am ashamed that such a place exists. I can definitively say this restaurant has a combination of poor service and food with no taste. I hate owners who think customers are stupid and we won't notice bad quality food. We were a group, and I had the chance to taste all the meals and my conclusion is that the meat wasnt fresh, the chicken not well marinated and cooked and the fish, that one was for cats not for humans. Quartier perse or Tehran are way better. You can definitively see they just want to sell to make money and not about good food. Mes amis quebecois, ce restaurant ne reprensente pas la fine cuisine perse. I am giving 2 stars, one because is the minimum and the 2nd one because we can bring our own wine.

Yelp
This is opposite of one expects from a restauarnt it is not worht the price or the money. The flavors are wrong and i cant agree more with the last review.

Mahdi M.

Yelp
We had dinner recently with two families When I asked them about type of Persian foods, she (owner/waitress) replied that there are available , so we decided to try koobideh Kabab as the most common Persian Kabab However most of Persian foods were not available at that night and it was not pleasant The customer service was at moderate level, quality of available foods was good, Type of available Persian food was disappointing.

Yelp
We just finished having lunch at this beautiful restaurant and we totally enjoyed family-style dining and a personalized service. It's a family owned operation, and they work tirelessly to provide a warm and cozy atmosphere and it shows. Their food is made with love and it's great for entertaining groups. We highly recommend it to anyone!

Navid A.

Yelp
It was so bad. In comparison, by the other Iranian restaurant, the quantity was very low and the price was high(about 20%).I don't recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Yelp
As much as I like to have given this a better rating, every single experience was bad. first, the place was empty when we got there for lunch (not a deal breaker, but just saying). no matter. we were greeted by owner/hostess/waitress... a very nice woman. one of us ordered koobideh, and she said: Our koubideh has not arrived yet today. what???? So when I read another Yelp reviewer that they also were told this place did not have Koobideh, then a red flag went up. not serving Koobideh in a Persian restaurant is like not having steak in a steakhouse. why would they lie to us that it has not arrived yet, at 2 PM for lunchtime? the salad and mast-mussir was very good, especially the salad dressing. fantastic. and that's about it. we saw a guy coming, looking like a Pizza delivery boy, and brought some stuff. Now that I think about it, I could swear that it was our food. Maybe their kitchen equipment was not working and they ordered from another place, I don't know. it just seemed weird. One of us ordered chicken kabab and the rest barg kabob. she brought barg kabob for all of us. I didn't make a big deal. the barg kabob was terrible. seems like they had slow cooked the kabab over an electric oven, really bad. she brings the kabab, goes and puts our soft drinks on the bar. and then she is gone. We are eating and waiting for the drinks, nothing. So I got up and brought the drinks from the bar. Being the only ones in the restaurant, I knew that they were our drinks. why would we want to have our drink after lunch?? one of us ordered the home-made yogurt drink. it was just beyond bad. the yogurt they used was definitely molded and spoiled. The ghormeh sabzi had way too much beans in them, way too much. but it was good and the meat they used for the stew was good quality. we asked for Onion to have with our food. she forgot about it. we asked again, and she brought us a worst quality onion. you own a persian restaurant and this is the onion you bring for people?? come on. Tea was not hot and didn't taste good. Finally, the prices written on the menu were different from what we were charged. Soup was $4 on menu, we were charged $5, and appetizer was $6 on the menu, we were charged $7. We did not make a big deal about it, and paid, but that's just ethically wrong. A few dollars don't make much of a difference but it's not good business. I would not have written this bad review had they been truthful about koubideh and the prices. not good and won't go back there.

Yelp
Great food! Friendly and warm welcome with fast service. The appetizer dishes were to die for!!! Tasty kebabs too! Definitely would recommend!

Yelp
For those of my friends in Montreal: (Please share) Last night we had a horrible experience in restaurant "YAS" We booked the place for 30 people including kids and went there for one of our friend goodbye party. The restaurant had only another table occupied beside our group and all the other tables were empty. 10 minutes through, the owner came and ion a very rude way said to some of our friends that you have to order 35$+ for all the kids, (she never discussed this before) and then once they asked why, she started to shout at all of us that you pay or I call POLICE!!!! then she started to yell, get out of my restaurant with your kids or I call police (she was speaking in Farsi so god knows what the other guests were thinking, maybe they assumed we didn't pay!!!!!) she didn't shut-up till I started to get back to her the same way and shut her up! we have to put stop in to this kind of verbal abuse by awful Iranian restaurant, cause I also heard the others had same kind of experiences other places. Send this message to everyone you know and teach them a lesson. Here is Canada and she shouldn't get away easy, she is wrong representative of our culture.

Negin S.

Yelp
Two of our dear friends are moving away from Montreal, and last night (Jan 26) we (a group of 30-35 people including children) decided to go to restaurant Yas (on Upper Lachine) to get together, and also have a good party for our friends. As far as I know, there was NO fixed menu, and therefore, NO fixed charge, and the owner knew there are children with us. In almost 30 minutes, I heard an employee (most probably the owner's wife) screaming at some of our friends, asking everybody INCLUDING CHILDREN order minimum 35$, and when we refused, she said, and I quote her words: I will call the police and throw you all out". At this point, other friends talked back, and we ended up leaving. Still, I don't know if she was upset about the kids, or the fact that 4 or 5 people didn't show up. However, making that scene because 4-5 out of 35 didn't show up is so ridiculous, and unprofessional!!! In any case, she didn't have the right to talk to us like that. The reason, we chose this restaurant was that they are also Iranians, and we wanted to support them by giving them our business, which they proved they don't deserve.

Yelp
We have tried many persian restaurants in entire east coast, and being married to persian I know how good persian foods tastes, and this place was AMAZING!!! Starting from appetizers, they were delish!! The lady who served was owner of the place and her service was magnificent!! She was very lovely, very organized and. Wright on time with everything. Service was outstanding and of course Td food too! Salmon kebab was perfect and soltani (beek kebab and beef skirt stake kebab) was amazing too!!! My husband said it tasted just like his mom used to make for him, that tell it all!!! Food was very good quality and everything tasted as suppose to!! Don't even try to go to Parisa, if you want real height quality persian food you have to come to Yas!!! Just I wish it would be wright in the center of Montreal, but I guess we cant have it all. Strongly recommend!! Amazing chef, delicious food and best service!!!

Sherry A.

Yelp
We stopped by in Montreal and had dinner at Yas, we tried different kababs including koobideh, barg and kabob torsh, food was very tastey and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I would definitely try it again!!
