"Although located slightly away from the historic centre, this authentic “cantina” full of surprises is well worth the journey! It features a simple tapas bar in the style of an old railway station, which leads to the dining room, the latter imitating the interior of an old train carriage. The couple in charge, Montserrat and Antonio José, focus on contemporary seasonal cuisine, with the intention of always enhancing what they offer with artisanal breads, a small selection of olive oils, an enticing tasting menu and at least one different stew every day. By far this was my best meal in Spain. To hell with Michelin guides, come here if you want to understand olive oil and Spanish cuisine. And yes, I travelled through the provinces in the course of lunch. Please be considerate and make reservations for your degustación well in advance. But first, the chef have devised a little test for you. 😏

We phoned in our booking and Antonio has sufficient English to make it and easy process. The premises are laid out like a large dining car on a railway carriage. The portions are quite large and the waitress guided us towards sharing parts of the meal to avoid having more food than we could eat. The wine from Jaen was very palatable and reasonably priced. The pate (fois) starter was particularly excellent.

Made a reservation to eat here with another couple. We all had the 9 course tasting menu. Despite this restaurant being on the bib gourmand list with Michelin, all four of us were wholly disappointed with the entire meal. The food just wasn’t good. There’s not much else to say about the food except that. The service was good and the train car ambiance was nice. But the food was just a huge let down.

Good food, but horrible service (not only it took forever to get our orders, but waiter also allowed himself some rather out of place comments about our choices and preferences and was generally confrontational throughout the whole dinner, although, to his credit, disguising it behind his polite demeanor). All in all the experience was spoiled and I wouldn’t recommend this place to a friend coming to visit Ubeda.
