Castizo - Review - La Condesa - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"Parque Mexico is a required stop when exploring Condesa - it’s not only the city’s biggest park, but arguably its most charming. When you do go, stop by Castizo beforehand. The service is excellent and the Spanish food here is genuinely incredible. We love their tortilla, freshly made with a runny center, as well as their pan con tomate with jamón ibérico on top. If you’re here with a group or with your family, this place is a crowd-pleaser, has an upscale feel to it, and is still pretty affordable. If you’re like us, you’ll probably be very full when leaving, in which case the park is located just two blocks up for a much-needed walk." - Guillaume Guevara

One of the best culinary experiences of my life. My mom and I each had the tasting menu (everyone at the table has to do this if someone wants the tasting menu) and we were treated to 8 exquisite small plates. For being a "small" plate though, each was a decent size and by the end we were hardly able to finish we were so full. The tartare, crispy salmon (almost had me in tears it was so good, and the only one I didn't get a picture of), and oxtail were my favorites but each plate was incredibly done.

Restaurante Castizo was an incredible find! First you'll be greeted by friendly staff and a very pleasant ambiance, thanks to lanterns suspended from a (fake) vine-lined ceiling, invitingly large chairs and tables, and decorative mirrors in a cute indoor patio. You're now primed to have a nice meal, but here's the twist: the food is even better than what you're expecting! We over-ordered a lot, but ultimately powered through and enjoyed the entire meal. Our top favorites were the octopus a la gallega, gambas al ajillo with a touch of honey, flores de calabaza stuffed with truffle cheese, sea bass a la donostiarra, and the kinder egg dessert, which you would normally order from the rooftop bar but the chef was kind enough to make for us. The only dish I wouldn't recommend is the patatas bravas, because there are so many significantly better things on the menu that it only takes up precious space. I'm so glad we happened to be staying nearby and couldn't go too far due to the pouring rain; we never would have stumbled upon this spot otherwise. I happily recommend trying this out if you're in the mood for outstanding tapas and don't mind slightly above average prices. Well worth it--will come back when we get the chance.

Loved the garlic sea bass here! Great taste and felt very fresh. They sent me a complimentary croquette and it had the right balance of crunch and taste. Appreciate my waiter Leo, provided great recommendations and summary of things in English.

I am really disappointed in this restaurant as it came highly recommended. First they would not let me do the tasting menu as they had a rule that the whole table needed to do it together. I don’t understand how this makes sense, if I came alone and would be able to try the tasting menu what is the difference if I am sitting at a table with others. I ordered three dishes, the squash blossoms which were good, the onion soup which was fine but way too expensive for the tiny bowl you get and the sea bass which was recommended by the waiter. The sea bass was basically just cooked in butter and was very expensive for something with not much flavor. My bill came to more than the tasting menu and I left hungry but did not want to order more as I was disappointed with 2/3 dishes I received. And to add to it the service was EXTREMELY slow we had to wait 15+ minutes just for someone to bring a menu after we asked and then again for the bill at the end it took them at least 20 minutes. The worst part was that I noticed after that the waiter added on a tip to my bill without asking???? Which should be illegal. They always ask here before adding a tip but he took it upon himself to choose how much we were tipping. Awful. Overall a poor experience I will not be returning.

Loved our dinner here last week. Sat streetside on a fairly quiet Sunday evening. Food was fantastic - we particularly enjoyed the croquettes, courgette blossoms and the picanha steak was superb. Our server made the evening really special. One of our best meals during our CDMX trip. Highly recommend.

Google
Lovely restaurant and authentic Spanish tapas. Our waiter, Alfonso, was the best. Great recommendations, service, and attitude. The food was absolutely incredible and reminded me of my time in Barcelona. Highly recommend the PSA steak and paella dish. We’ll be back next time!

Had a wonderful dinner at Restaurante Castizo. The service was warm and attentive, the food was incredible and the portion sizes were ample for the price. The outside seating was dreamy. I highly recommend the bone marrow pasta and the zucchini blossoms in particular. I would definitely return!

Google
Delicious breakfast. So good we came here two days in a row. With your order, definitely also ask for pastry basket! The croissants are amazing.

Yelp
This place was very cute. We sat outside under the heater, they also provided blankets on each, which was a thoughtful touch. It was lerfect spot for a relaxed night out, there was definitely a fair share of foreigners! The arroz de marisco was absolutely amazing and packed with seafood. Perfect balance of fresh seafood and perfectly cooked rice. The portion was generous enough to share. Nothing crazy, but the potatoes (patatas) were so yummy! Everything ordered was a hit! Beyond the food, the service, no complaints. The staff was friendly, attentive, and explained everything. We really looked like tourists who had no idea

Yelp
Chic place with plates deliciously prepared to invite in a little escapade to the shore of Valencia in Spain. The food is well balanced and served with an introduction of what is on the plate. The service is a collective mission, all available waiters respond to help the main one. Good experience there.

Yelp
We stopped in to grab a drink on a Tuesday night and were able to get a table right away. I appreciated that they had blankets for the outdoor tables. Our drinks came out in a timely fashion and they were delicious. The server came and checked on us and appropriate amount of times. Would highly recommend as a cute dinner/drinks location!

Yelp
This place is located in the most beautiful neighborhood in CDMX, the amazing Colonia Condesa. It's location is picture perfect, both inside and out. The plants and lighting just make this place an Instagramer's paradise. Decor-pretty awesome decor inside and out. Service-good service, just like the rest of Mexico. They were attentive and ready when we needed them. Food-delicious flavors and dishes were well put together. I felt the plates were a bit on the small side, and a bit over priced, but they were not lacking flavor. Sopa de Pescado y Mariscos-4.5/5 stars. It's a soup packed with flavor, but small in size. Hamburguesa de Rabo de Toro-5/5 stars! It's very flavorful, the oxtail patty was juicy and it had a distinct taste, the roasted peppers and aioli was perfect on the burger. The fries were perfectly fried and salted to perfection. Picaña de Res Black Angus a la parrilla, Papas Fritas y Cebolla Asada-4/5 stars. Meat wasn't as tender as I expected it to be. The flavor was ok, I feel like it could've used additional season and could've been cooked a bit more, it was cold to be ordered medium. This place was upscale and in the best location in CDMX. I'd be back soon.

Yelp
Good food, cute classic CDMX vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. Anchovies in vinegar 3.5/5 - served over potato chips. Anchovies very on point. You'd love this if you're a salt & vinegar chip person (I'm not but still enjoyed this) Burrata salad 3/5 - good but not mindblowing. As expected, nothing too special Truffle cheese stuffed pumpkin flowers tempura 5/5 - the star of the night! Topped with a bit of caviar this is an umami bomb with cheese Crunchy baby artichokes 3.5/5 - good but nothing special. Patatas bravas 3/5 - hefty portion, decent flavor, nothing special. Some were crispy others weren't as crispy. Arroz negro (black rice) with baby squid and prawns - 4.5/5. Such a touch too salty but otherwise bomb! Lots of seafood too, even tiny scallops. Galician way octopus 4/5 - served over potatoes. Cooked well, good flavor. braised oxtail 4/5 - served over potatoes. Same cooked very well, tender meat, good flavor

Yelp
Lovely location and nicely decorated inside. The greenery on the ceiling and with the selected furniture creates a calm and inviting atmosphere. The waitstaff are extremely friendly and accommodating. Truly great service. We got the patatas bravas (very delicious) and quite a portion for sharing. Also the tortilla de patatas with truffle oil. Didn't really taste any truffle flavor. The texture was so soft and melted in your mouth. Also huge portion. My friend and I only ate half and took the other half to go. Crudo was also fresh. Added some Tabasco for more kick. Drinks were SO cute. And tasty. Highly recommend to check it out!! Clean, new, and inviting!

Yelp
Beautiful venue and attentive staff - just boring, flavorless, food. Had high hopes for this place but we all thought the food was very bland and basic. It wasn't overly expensive but street food would have been better and way cheaper.

Yelp
We prepaid MX$1,560 for an indoor dining reservation on Christmas eve.  This was a cold rainy night.  They refused to seat us indoor despite many open indoor tables.  They claimed those have been reserved, but we made our reservation too!!  After speaking to several management personnel without luck, we asked for a refund to go elsewhere.  That's when they reluctantly placed us in a small bar table with constant traffic, noises and people coughing right behind us.  We had to complain again before they finally sat us in a dining table.  What a way to treat customers!  Food was okay but not spectacular for the price we paid.  When we left there were still a number of open indoor tables that were not filled.  We can't help but wonder if English speaking customers are not treated as well as local customers...

Yelp
Probably the best dining service we had during our 2 weeks in Mexico City. We were greeted right away, the servers were kind and attentive, and food came quickly. The food was excellent (i had stuffed zucchini flowers, artichokes with shrimp tacos) and decor was very nice as well.

Yelp
Recently opened and already making its mark. Martine, the excellent Maitre d', guided our group of 5 through a delicious sharing experience that ranged from sliced iberian ham and meats, pulpo, stuffed flor de calabaza, salmon, ribeye...etc. That, along with some delicious mezcals and cocktails in a beautiful renovated colonial mansion are a great addition to the cuisine and energy of this neighborhood. The music was a bit loud but the vibe and clientele were having a great time enjoying the experience! We look forward to many more wonderful meals at Castizo.
