La Aquarela

"Despite its somewhat unusual location in an apartment complex along the Playa de Patalavaca in the southern part of Gran Canaria, La Aquarela has become one of the leading names on the island’s restaurant scene. To a welcoming and hushed backdrop of classic decor and romantic tables (those overlooking the swimming pool are perfect for enjoying the sunset), savour delicate, highly technical dishes with lots of flavour and a strong connection to the local area, but with their own personality, as demonstrated by the occasional Nordic touch (chef Germán Ortega spent several years working in Stockholm). Up to 85% of its ingredients are locally sourced and are showcased in modern Canary Island dishes on three menus: Experiencia (combining the sea and the land), Tierra (vegetarian) and Fish Lovers (with an obvious focus on fish and seafood from the Atlantic waters around the islands)." - Michelin Inspector

Celebrating a special birthday we dined at this well renowned establishment. Between us we tried both their menus and I also opted for the 10 glass wine pairing option. Everything was delicious. Very professional staff who explained each plate and each wine in detail. Great setting with views of the ocean and luckily for a great sunset. Highly recommend a visit 👌

Full disclosure: whenever I go to Gran Canaria, for any length of time, from 4 or 5 days, to six weeks, I ALWAYS eat at La Aquarela (sometimes more than once). I have found over the seven or eight years that I have visiting the restaurant that the quality of food, the professional service and the whole general ambience really is something special. From the Head Chef to the guy who clears the crumbs, the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes and genuinely seek out comments to pass back to the kitchen. The wine pairing is also top notch (if you can afford it) and a good mix of local and mainland wines compliment every dish, from the Cava at the start, to the dessert wine at the end. It had been fourteen months since my last visit, and all but the one very special signature dish had changed which shows the chef's continuing search for excellence. (Just a word of warning, a recent price rise did mean that the full menu and wine flight is now over £200)

My partner took me here for my 40th birthday, and wow did he pick the most amazing place !! We took a 5 minute walk from where we are staying up to the restaurant, we were received by a warm welcome, the restaurant is absolutely stunning inside and outside. We were sat outside , with stunning views of Anfi beach and the ocean. You know you’re in a classy place when you have a seat for your bag, the selection of wines are large, I asked for an Aperol Spritz and they had them also. We went for the experience menu, with me not liking fish or seafood they happily explained I could have the vegetarian options along side the meats. The food was fantastic!! So rich and tasty. So much variety and it was truly a great experience of food. I cannot fault one thing at all. The service was also excellent. Food was well explained and I even received a birthday cake at the end. Also just to mention we both left with full bellies! This is definitely worth trying for a special occasion or just to simply try the experience, we will definitely be returning.

Highlight on Gran Canaria. One of the best Michelin star restaurants we have ever been to. Amazing food and wine paring. Service is outstanding! Atmosphere and setting a must-see. 100% recommendation.

In the early evening, the setting can be somewhat distracting, with lingering swimmers creating a less serene atmosphere. Thankfully, as night falls, tranquility takes over. The culinary experience is a highlight—expertly prepared dishes plated with precision and an eye for aesthetics. However, the wine selection doesn't quite rise to the same standard. The local Canarian wines, regrettably, leaned toward the sour and bland side, lacking the depth and richness one might expect. In contrast, selections from the mainland offered a more refined quality. Service was warm and welcoming, though at times brisk and notably serious, leaving little room for the relaxed indulgence one hopes for in such a setting.

An amazing dinner, with lots of flavors and all local Canarian products. A beautiful wine pairing, and all served by really nice waiters and sommeliers. A big recommendation.

We had high expectations and they were totally met :-) Nice wine pairing, good explanations and outstanding food. Thank you for the nice evening! With 500€ for 2 persons not cheap though, but worth it.

Excellent! My first experience at a Michelin rated restaurant. The whole experience was lovely. We each got different fix course options: the experience ( mixed meats and fish) and the fish lovers. The fish lovers was lighter and more delicate in flavor. The experience was richer. Everything from the service, to the food, to the plates and cutlery was exceptional! The desserts were light and perfectly sweet. Highly recommended!
