Lisbon Was Just Named the Best Culinary City Destination in Europe — Here Are Must-eat Places, According to a Local

"Pica Pau translates to "woodpecker," but don't worry, there aren't any on the menu. It's a lovely spot in Principe Real that offers up old-school recipes like pastéis de bacalhau and rissóis de leitão that certainly proves Portuguese food is indeed the best." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. Nice energy and vibe at dinner. There was bit of a lineup when we finished. Decided to order 3 small plates - roasted chorizo salt cod cakes and suckling pig filled pastry. Main was grouper and shrimp rice. Dessert was sponge cake with custard. Service was helpful and friendly. Good was excellent except for the chorizo which was too salty for my taste and made hit have been over cooked as it was dry and chewy - not what I was expecting. The rest were excellent. Would come back for sure.

Everything I tried was absolutely delicious, also service and wine options were top notch. Even if it's a portuguese restaurant with traditional dishes, the experience is well elevated, so you can get to enjoy some typical recipes at their very best! Recommended to book in advance.

Lovely, cosy contemporary take on a classic Portuguese restaurant. Staff are all very friendly, attentive and speak perfect English for anyone who’s worried about a language barrier. Food came out swiftly with very little waiting. Maybe not so great for vegetarians or vegans but still plenty of choice for carnivores and pescatarians. Highly recommended!

We had 7pm reservations for a private party of 10 but on the day of they had plumbing issues which delayed their opening and our seating by 1.5hrs. I was given options to reschedule but we would lose the special order goat so we decided to wait it out. The dinner service started out great but got progressively slower as the night went on - they seemed to have forgotten about us in the VIP room before dessert was served. Food was good though the much anticipated goat was a little dry, likely because it sat under a heat lamp or something during the delay.

Authentic Portuguese cuisine with a focus on seafood and pork. The place was tasteful, modern and lively. The server was friendly and great and making suggestions on both food and wine. And the food did not disappoint.

Thoroughly enjoyed our dinner here. Bread service was worth it. Shared the pica-Pau appetizer to start and the croquettes. Then for dinner we did the Octopus and the Pork cheek. The octopus was the best my wife and I have ever had. Pork cheek was very good too. Paired it with some rose and port. Our waiter was great too. Overall a great experience.

Went there as recommended by the Nytimes. The restaurant is nicely decorated. The patio is winter room, so basically covered by windows with view over other surrounding buildings and some trees; the lack of outdoor seating and view are compensated by the nice furniture and decor. I got there for lunch at 12:30 and was literally alone but soon several other patrons arrived; mainly tourists and some local women. Service is ok; profession and friendly and all speak perfect English. The food was really great! The octopus was amazing; almost melts in your mouth. I also had a great IPA beer. In summary great restaurant; limited by its location and lack of nice outdoor seating.

We stumbled upon this place on our last day and absolutely loved it. We loved the garlic prawn, clams and octopus salad. Highly recommend this restaurant! Service and food were excellent
