The 38 Essential Mexico City Restaurants

"Somsaa is the third project by Thai chefs Somsri and Rachadaporn Raksamran, who have made a name for themselves in Mexico City’s food scene by recreating the flavors of their culinary heritage. Somsaa’s South Asian menu plays within traditions and classic dishes, while allowing the Raksamran sisters to innovate. Start with the baos crostini with king salmon, ikura, and nam jim sauce, before moving onto the super crispy fried chicken with spicy lemongrass or the Singapore-style chilli crab. Save room for dessert, when you should try an assortment of mooncakes, which come with fillings like sala cider or cured duck egg. The tea service is casual, with organic blends carefully selected for quality, and the cocktail menu focuses on tea infusions too. The wine list concentrates on pet-nats and sparkling wine, adding an elegant, effervescent touch to the entire dining experience." - Natalia de la Rosa, Daniela Galarza

I had a pleasant time at Somsaa. Vibrant, yet cozy venue. It almost has a homey feel, not to take away from any of the professionalism in their service. The food and cocktails were clearly well thought out and carefully designed, however, the flavor profiles were a little off for my liking. I found a few items to be overly sweet, bev and food alike. And yes I know the cultures they pull inspiration from have those characteristics, it is part of why I love East Asian cuisine the most, however in this case it was a little too much in one direction. Price point is on the higher end, but definitely makes sense when you see the ingredients used and the preparation involved. I would love to give it another try, especially for their afternoon tea after seeing that it is one of their offerings.

Cute Southeast Asian flair spot by the same owner as Galanga. The setting is in a beautiful colonial house. Service is friendly and I can see it as a great choice for dates and gatherings with friends. The food was a tad too sweet for my personal liking, but I appreciate that the server was able to help us navigate the gluten free items. My favorite dish was the nem lui. The drink selection is good - we had a nice bottle of cider. Will probably come back to try the tea & dessert another time as those seem to be their signature items.

This looks like someone’s house that was restored as a super cute restaurant. The food was delicious. We tried some dumplings, the kuay teow and steamed fish. And a bunch of desserts.

Delicious teas and desserts and ambiance was amazing, will definitely come back to try the food.

Google
The place is really nice and they have great tea-infused cocktails. My 4-star rating is because we were here for lunch and options were quite limited but the food is really nice! We did not have dessert as we read mixed reviews.

Google
Loved this place and Eric really took care of our party. He provided background on the dishes and what made each unique. Sustainably sourced, fresh and delicious food. Recommend the blue fin tuna, mushroom pot, and the Ngoh Hiang. Cocktails were great as well and definitely get the tea (loved the Oolong)

Google
Gorgeous place with wonderful food. Fell in love with the chili crab, which wasn't too spicy and was served with slightly sweet hot bread buns. Amazing combination! Also got the oysters and caviar but the Vietnamese fish sauce was a bit strong (even for a Vietnamese person) and drowned out any other flavor. I enjoyed the pandan cake and Smoky Geisha mezcal with melon, genmaicha syrup and yuzu. I will probably be back at least one more time to try the duck and a different tea cocktail drink before I leave the city.

Google
The tofu roll is a must if you like the crispy touch. The crab and the octopus are good as well, but a little bit too sweet for my tooth. Worth to try it!

Yelp
Gorgeous restaurant. Very relaxed, chic vibes. Great service. Tasty food. Spring Rolls - 4/5 Beef Pho - 4/5 Pho was tasty with a lot of beef. Spring rolls were massive...not a lot of shrimp though.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious and an adorable setting. Beautiful place for yummy food in a stylish neighborhood. Very hospitable as well.

Yelp
Cute hipster joint to hangout with friends or a date. We got 3 noodle soups, all not authentic (which we weren't expecting anyway) but tasted decent. Our biggest complaint would be the amount of soup given and how lukewarm it is. It is barely warm... They do have English in the menu and the overall experience is pleasant. Presentation is nice but given the pricing we expected better. This place has potential! Hope to return if the soup comes out hot and filled up!

Yelp
My husband and I were heading to the restaurant across the street because of their reviews. But Kinn was so cute and had a vibrant vibe so we went there instead. Very glad we did. THe food was delicious and so were the drinks! The service was also very good. And the place is very cute and played groovy music. And contrary to what one reviewer said, the area (Roma Sur) is quite nice. We will be back!

Yelp
Food is good but the service sucks. Waiter kept us awkwardly in line for a long time.

Yelp
One of the better green curries I have had outside of Thailand. The presentation was beautiful, but it made it entirely too messy and difficult to eat, but it did not stop me from clearing the bowl. I can't wait to try more of the dishes offered, but at this price point, it is a special occasion restaurant for me. Now....when is the next special occasion?

Yelp
I had a green curry here and it was absolutely delicious. It seemed authentic to me but I haven't had this exact dish elsewhere. The preparation of various ingredients seemed consistent with authentic Thai food I've had. The atmosphere is very pleasant and the cocktails were delicious as well!

Yelp
The best thai food I've tried in Mexico. I wanted the whole menu, so I'm definitely coming back. Beautiful place and great service.

Yelp
Best Vietnamese/Thai in town. Amazing location, especially for dates. Try to make a reservation because it is always full. Go for the pad Thai because it is worth every penny.
