Retreat East (Ipswich, Suffolk) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"In some ways it’s not quite a hotel, and in others it’s much more. Retreat East is a collection of barns, houses, and huts in the Suffolk countryside, a few miles outside of Ipswich. Some are antique, others modern, but all mix rustic charm and modern luxuries. On the one hand they feel fairly self-sufficient; on the other, they’re supplemented by a restaurant, a spa, and a wealth of wellness and outdoor-focused activities." - Tablet Hotels

Surprised at the mixed reviews as we had a lovely stay at Retreat East. We stayed in one of the barns - rookery. The set up is very cute, a nice comfortable space with a private area at the back where you can relax. Bathroom and sitting area were nice with good products and facilities. I guess your stay could be spoilt if you had noisy neighbours as the sound proofing is weak, luckily for us the girls next doors were quiet, whilst you can hear people moving around it was not a problem. We used the spa facilities which are small but give what you need, it is a nice change to be able to book and have the facilities for your private use. Our spa treatments were great and very good value compared to other spas we have stayed in. Amber was a great spa therapist. Dinner was nice, it is a quiet restaurant with few staff but we went in a hurry and liked the relaxed vibe. Walks in the local area were scenic. Would recommend if you want a getaway with a relaxed approach.

I booked a stay at Retreat East for my girlfriend’s 21st birthday, and it honestly couldn’t have been more perfect. From the moment we arrived, we were blown away by how peaceful and picturesque the whole place is — it’s the ultimate escape from everyday life.||The accommodation was beautiful – cosy, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. You can tell every detail has been thought through. The hot tub was a real highlight – perfect for unwinding. We also loved taking the bikes out for a ride around the countryside, which added a fun and active touch to the stay.||We had both breakfast and dinner at the on-site restaurant and were seriously impressed – fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. Every meal felt special, and the service was faultless throughout.||Overall, Retreat East gave us everything we were hoping for – peace, privacy, and a sense of luxury. It made my girlfriend’s birthday feel really memorable, and we’ve already said we’ll be back. Can’t recommend it enough if you’re looking for a romantic, relaxing break. Massive thanks to Lynn who made our trip extra special

Retreat East is a lovely place to unwind and relax. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The accommodation was very comfortable very clean and decorated to a very high standard. The food was excellent, we had dinner and then an afternoon tea the next day. Dogs are very welcome and looked after extremely well too, they are given their own bed bowls and treats. Highly recommended this retreat.

The retreat was in a lovely setting. We stayed in the Sett which was large, well equipped and quiet. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and polite, nothing was too much trouble. The food in the Barn restaurant was very good. The spa treatments were excellent as was the hot tub experience.

Stayed in The Farmhouse at Retreat East for friends 30th birthday party. It is a beautiful old original house complete with wobbly floors, old windows & all old wooden doors with Suffolk/Norfolk latches. The decor was done tastefully & sympathetic to the period of the house, however there were lots of examples of tiredness & things that needing replacing or mending.||The beds were very comfortable & it was a really peaceful rest. We did find after two people had showered & another had had a bath one morning, there was no longer any hot water; not great for a house meant to sleep eight!||Cleanliness was okay, & staff were very friendly & even offered to lend us a pair of sunglasses of their own, when they had forgotten to bring theirs.||The spa area was small, & definitely only fit for one party at a time.||Breakfast was basic, & anything cooked was at extra cost, which was a shame not to be included in what was quite an expensive stay.||Beautiful surroundings. But not sure I would return simply because of value for money.

It was okay, but for the price paid, and for a place that describes itself as ‘luxury’, I expected much more. We had one of the more expensive rooms (‘the piggery’) and I can see that once upon a time it was nice but it was looking quite run down and shabby, it severely needed a lick of paint, repairing of fixtures and fittings and the garden area really needed some plants, decent furniture and shade (currently it feels like a driveway with a picnic bench and two chairs.) Breakfast at the great barn wasn’t a great experience - staff seemed chaotic and on one day there was barely any food, drinks and juices had all ran out, no milk for the cereal etc. on another day we waited over half an hour for some coffees. We were meant to have dinner there but we cancelled because we weren’t filled with confidence following our breakfast experience! On the positive side - the staff are lovely, the massages were good, and the location (if you’re happy to drive) was good for exploring Suffolk. Overall I was disappointed and I’m not sure I’d recommend in its current state, but I hope they make some amends and improvements.

Couldn’t fault this stat. Our lodge was stunning, stylish and well fitted with nice touches like Grind coffee and the outdoor bath was lush! Food & drink was great and fairly priced for its quality. The setting is stunning- quiet & peaceful and surrounded by nature- well worth going off exploring! Last but certainly not least were the staff- all of whom were a delight to deal with and excellent. Honestly couldn’t fault it, can’t wait to go back!
