A friend and I visited Retrograde Coffee Roasters as our mid-point treat after walking the Joe Rodota Trail from Santa Rosa to Sebastopol. We both wanted an iced coffee of sorts, so we got the Milky Way Nitro Cold Coffees with house-made vanilla syrup in them. The square ice cubes that came in our coffees were fun, and the heart-shaped reusable straws for Valentine's Day were super cute. The Milky Way Nitro Cold Coffees, on the other hand, were not so cute. They were sour in flavor. I know the proper term is probably acidic, but these were definitely that. We both took our first sips of our Milky Way Nitro Cold Coffees while walking back towards the Joe Rodota Trail, and we immediately thought of returning to Retrograde to see if maybe they had given us the wrong drinks or a bad batch, but for fear of not wanting to be "Karens" and for fear of not wanting to insult an otherwise adorable establishment, we ended up calling by phone to see if the staff would describe the Milky Way Nitro Cold Coffees as acidic. (We used the term sour, as that's what first came to our minds upon sipping them, but the gentleman who answered the phone reassured us that he wouldn't describe any of their coffees as sour.) That interaction solidified our decision to just accept this experience as a loss and to not insult a local business by going back and asking if we got a bad batch of coffee.
It was sad to toss our Milky Way Nitro Cold Coffees into the bushes along the Joe Rodota Trail as we walked back to Santa Rosa, but there was no way that we were going to drink them. We tried to see the positives in our botched iced coffee experience in that we got to try a different local business, and we got cute, heart-shaped, reusable straws out of it.
The interior (and the exterior) of Retrograde Coffee Roasters is super cute and inviting. There wasn't an empty seat in the house upon our arrival, so we took that as a good sign. We loved the wall art by the register and the merchandise that they had for sale. The staff were super friendly, and we had good interactions with some of our fellow customers while waiting for our drinks. My friend and I SO wanted to love everything about this place, but unfortunately, the coffee was not for us. If you're a fan of the more acidic coffees, this is your place.
