Where to Stop and Eat on the Drive From D.C. to Pittsburgh | Eater DC

"Sometimes chips and salsa just hit the spot after a long drive. Rey Azteca has the Mexican-American classics you’d expect: fajitas, chimichangas, enchiladas, burritos, and a hefty selection of combination platters." - Missy Frederick

You have to get the Pollo Adobe if you can. It was the best thing I had there, and I came back a second time to try other things. Haha. I also ordered the Shrimp chimichanga and it was fine. The Pollo Adobe was so good. The drinks were good too. I got the pina colada margarita. Their chips and salsa are not good tho. The chips arent salty or greasy enough. Sometimes you pay at the counter after, sometimes you pay at the table after. Not sure why, and they didn't tell us which to do.

We had a wonderful time getting lunch here while passing through town. The atmosphere is really nice with beautiful painted tables and some music playing softly. There were so many amazing options on the menu we had trouble choosing. When we finally did order with our server, Alejandro, the food came super fast, in big portions, and was very delicious. Alejandro’s service is particular was spectacular— he was timely and kind and answered all of our questions with expertise.

Google
Service and atmosphere was good. Food supposedly good, it just the waiter didn’t ask and we completely forgot to tell him which tortillas we wanted for our tacos. I only like corn tortillas in anything. And it came up with flour of course. The waiter explained to me, if they have latino customers they would ask if they want corn tortillas but since we’re not Latino apparently he or the rest of the crews assumed that we only like flour which that’s not the case for us. Lessons and learned. By the way we had tacos al pastor and carne asada.

Google
Scammy billing practice. The food is decent but the server added a couple of additional charges including 15% gratuity (for one person) and a random $1.5 charge; an additional tip was also expected. Initially, I thought that the server made a mistake. When asked for clarification, his response suggested that it was done intentionally. Disappointed.

Google
Good Mexica restaurant. Service, it is good I order Enchiladas de pollo .shredded meat, melted cheese and beef.

Google
The service was not that great today nor was the food. I had to ask my waiter twice for something and I still did not get it and I had to get up and ask for it again before I got it. After putting the order in I'm guessing the waiter must have forgot to put it in because other people got served before we did and we were there first. He made the excuse that it was the weekend and they were busy but that had nothing to do with it. After receiving my order, my rice was lukewarm to cool. I asked for a different bowl of rice and when I got it it too was also lukewarm to cool. Overall experience was not good today. In the end, I was still charged full price for my meal even though I did not get my full meal. This restaurant is going on the back burner for a while.

Excellent homemade food in Somerset Pa. The authentic Mexican dishes were very flavorful. Very generous portions! Very reasonable prices!

Yelp
It was a rainy Friday night in February and we wanted to try a new place. We settled on Rey-Azteca thinking they would have strong margaritas and tasty tacos. The restaurant is fully decorated from top to bottom, very festive and the servers are all really nice. It was mostly empty only a two other tables had people dining and so everyone was really attentive. The margarita came first and it was subpar not very good, just tasted like a cheap mixer with bottom shelf tequila. The food came and it was not authentic Mexican or even Tex-Mex we asked what part of Mexico they were from because I was curious and it just seems like they have substituted some crucial ingredients to getting that authentic flavor. All in all maybe for happy hour or quick festive ambiance this is a good choice.

Yelp
Delicious food, fast service. We found this restaurant by driving around. It was not in the Yelp search results in spite of having very good reviews. You will not regret going here.

Colleen R.

Yelp
We have stopped here the past two years on the way to Cleveland and it is delicious. Service was fast and the food was tasty--even on the road! We called ahead and picked up because we had dogs with us.

Yelp
I stop into Rey-Azteca each time I pass through town. It's the best restaurant for a casual meal and the entrees never disappoint. My own critique is that the salsa tastes like cold tomato sauce; it's not nearly as flavorful as it could be.

Yelp
Absolutely the best Mex food in Somerset County. Service is top notch and the restaurant is always clean and beautiful. Excellent management as well.

Yelp
Service is fast and attentive, food is fairly priced, always fresh and served hot. Plenty of seating and pleasant atmosphere. They also have a drive thru for convenience of takeout.

Maggie R.

Yelp

Yelp
Out-of-towner here, from NJ. Was looking to eat, use restroom and get gas before hopping back on the highway after visiting the Flight 93 Memorial. And this place hit the spot. Great menu, fast and friendly service, really clean restroom. I love being able to eat well on the road! Not limited to salty and fried fast food. My brother even enjoyed a beer. Complimentary baskets of chips are always a plus. Other reviewers referred to this place as Americanized Mexican. I agree it's friendlier to a mainstream palate with their use of shredded chicken breast, rather than dark meat. But a keen ear will hear classic salsa music playing throughout, making us dance a little bit in our seats!

Yelp
The location is unexpected. When you find yourself in the middle of Pa. And what to eat? This is a surprise. Tex Mex in Somerset?? I'm sure you can never find anything like this anywhere. The food is fine. The Margaritas are great. The price is right!! I don't think that this is real Mexican food but it is clean and easy to find. I highly recommend this.

Yelp
Rey Azteca's menu lists dozens of Mexican appetizers; entrees such as fajitas, burritos, salads, and specials; desserts; and drinks. Our server was Alejandro, and he was very nice. During the pandemic, he wore a face mask, and he seated my husband and me at a clean table that was socially distanced from other tables. He brought out free chips and salsa, and he brought us our choice of drinks. When we were ready to order our food, Alejandro accurately took our order. The chef cooked our food in a short time. When we were done eating, we waited a while for the check. I have lived in expensive cities for much of my life, but I thought that the prices were reasonable--about $34 total for two people. Here are my reviews for the foods: Guacamole dip - 10 stars! - This guacamole contained the perfect balance of fresh avocado, cilantro, salt, etc. It somehow contained only one piece of tomato, but my husband hates tomato, so he felt pleased. Seriously, this guacamole tasted delicious. Quesadilla deluxe - 5 stars - This quesadilla was filled with chicken and cheese. On the side was shredded lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and cheese. Also included was Spanish rice that had a mild but nice flavor. Steak fajita dinner - 2 stars - My husband ate much of this entree but only because he was hungry. My husband is part Mexican and grew up eating authentic homemade Mexican food. He said that he did not like the taste of this entree but did not say exactly why. I did not taste my husband's food, but as a couple of other reviewers have already said, the food overall seemed to have a mild level of spiciness.

Yelp
The food was wonderful. Between 3 of us we had fajitas (chicken & steak) and chicken chili relleno. We also had guacamole. All were fantastic. The relleno was recommended by Arturo our waiter. He was attentive and kept tabs on us to ensure everything was to our liking. We topped it off with a churro stuffed with vanilla ice cream. I also had a margarita on the rocks! Everything beyond expectations!

Yelp
Margarita was made so good it was smooth and creamy not chunky like most other Mexican restaurants. Very friendly staff I was very comfortable here and nice menu with many options.

Yelp
PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE EATING HERE Me customer: can I get a refill? Server: one moment I am busy 7 mins later brings water while I am drinking sweet tea Went to ask a question server walks away before I even asked Was there for over a hour the server check on us when we arrived, when he brought us drinks, and when the food arrived The sever couldn't even bring us our checks had to go to the front to ask for them. The raw food caution sign on the menu should be the only thing taken seriously at this place because they do server under cooked food There were people waiting as we left and they were waiting for at least 20 mins. The server said there was no available tables but the surrounding tables by the table I was at were all open... They ended up walking out!! The only reason I wrote this review is because I am from Virginia and I work in a restaurant called waterman's surf side and grill, so I have an idea of how a restaurant should be ran and ray Aztec is getting ran into the ground single handily by poor service and cooking.

Yelp
Consistently awesome. A go to visit each time we are in the area. Service is attentive. Fresh and delicious food!

Yelp
For Americanized Mexican food, they offered a very fine meal. Stopped here on the way for a weekend visit to Washington, DC. The restuarant is quite large and broken up into several different rooms / sections. Of course we started the meal with their complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were warm, but the salsa was pretty weak in flavor. I think they offer a spicier version, but we forgot to ask for it. We are big fans of white cheese dip (usually made with chihuahua cheese and diced jalapenos, but their version was also not very spicy. I ordered one of their combo platters consisting of a taco, burrito, rice and refried beans. They were tasty...just what you'd expect for a restaurant like this one, but nothing out of the ordinary. Glad we stopped here and gave them a try.

Yelp
Really delicious chicken flautas! We saw good Yelp reviews for this place and we' were not disappointed. Good service, very friendly and a tasty Margarita. Couldn't ask for more.

Yelp
Love everything I've ever eaten there. Lorenzo is the best he'll take great care of you.

Gary L.

Yelp
I'm traveling thru the town and stopped in to get takeout. I was very impressed with with my tacos, Spanish rice and refried beans. Great taste in Mexican food.

Tim W.

Yelp
On a busy Saturday evening, we came here for dinner while staying nearby. 5 min wait to be seated, not a problem as busy as they were. Drinks and order taken within 10 minutes. Food arrived at the table 15 minutes after that. Really good when the place was packed. Friendly staff, the food was reasonably priced, and very good. If we lived here, we would frequently eat here. I rarely give 5 stars, this place is a solid 4. Decor dated, but the dining experience was very good. Can't see how you can go wrong here.

Yelp
Great service and amazing tacos. So authentic!!! Will be coming here again. Stopped here off the PA turnpike for something quick - called in our order when we were 20 min away and it was ready when we arrived! One of the best stops at this exit. Get the carnitas!!!

Yelp
Rey-Azteca had great yelp reviews and it did not disappoint, excellent service and fantastic food. Everyone in my party, including two picket kiddos had nothing but glowing reviews from there meals. Clean plates all around A+++

Yelp
Excellent food! Stellar service! All the time, every time! Don't forget desserts! The flan is creamy and just the right amount of sweetness.
google avatar

Yelp
Great food. The basic margarita wasn't good, but the server knew it and offered me a different kind. My parents enjoy coming here, so I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Likely the best Mexican in many miles, so we grade on a curve. The service is good, the restaurant is fine, and the food is extremely bland.
google avatar

Rose L.

Yelp
Well well well well when in 7 Springs area and want a craving for Mexican well now you know where to go! True authentic Mexican - remember Mexico is bigger than Cancun folks and so different areas have different flavors and method of preparation. This menu is extensive! To start we were brought chips and two kinds of salsa. One had way more cilantro and each had a unique base spice, you could tell one had smokier peppers in it. The heat hit you in the throat in that one. The other on the tongue. Daughter ordered a shrimp dish and made herself some tacos - I stole some tasty shrimp. She was not sharing I got an evil eye there. Husband ordered the enchilada special- one beef, chicken, veggie- I can tell you it was so delicious he cleaned his plate. I had the shredded chicken in mole- hot damn this was good! You can make yourself a taco as it comes with tortillas- or you can do as I did with my leftovers - serve them over corn cake- oh I wish I had some of that now as I write this from New Jersey and not Pittsburgh. Great made myself hungry !
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant! Great service, great food and super convenient right off the turnpike. I got the fajita quesadillas and some queso to go with my chips. Everything was good!

Yelp
Great meal for a great price! We went here on a Saturday for dinner and were seated/served quickly. The service was great and the food was also wonderful. Also, their prices are so very reasonable. We are so happy to have found a great restaurant in Somerset for when we're visiting our lake house on the occasional weekend.

Yelp
Horchata and home brewed tea are stellar! Chips and salsa are standard with seating but the salsa is kind of bland, not much to it besides tomato sauce. Chips were great. I got the mole ranchero hoping for some spice. The only spice and flavor was sodium. Mole if suppose to have so much flavor depth but this was seriously lacking. The guac is just smushed avocado with hints of cilantro and tomato. Not bad but could be so much more. You can't really screw up guac though. My boyfriend had the Rey Azteca and said similar things about it, not to much flavor. It's all right, just nothing too special. I'd eat here again but knowing it's just okay.

Yelp
Heaven. Came here after work. We're from Buffalo, NY. Contractors working in town. This place reminds us of our favorite restaurant, Taqueria Los Mayas. Everything made us feel like home. Thank yous. I loved the queso with chorizo and fresh warm chips. Salsa was perfect. Guacamole pretty good. We both got the carnitas lunch specials: one as a fajita style, other as a burrito. Delicious! (Completely different from one another.) It was like a stew rather than fried, Very tender and moist, came covered in a semi spicy salsa verde, served along with rice and refried beans. Refried beans are hard to make, these are wonderful to eat just by themselves. Not a fan of rice in general, but these paired perfectly with the meal because it did not over power the dish. Margarita (on ice always) tasted like sweetened lemonade. I asked for Don Julio Blanca (as always) instead of Cuervo, it was refreshing and deadly. I could of easily stayed the night. We originally wanted to take out, but now that we are fully vaccinated and the way the restaurant was being managed we felt safe to stay. It was our 1st time sitting in any place, great choice indeed! This is exactly what I expect from other restaurants. Spacious, Clean, friendly, priced just right, incredible food and drinks. We truly appreciate everything. When we're in town, We Will Come Back.!. Thank yous. Please Stay safe.

Yelp
In love with this place!! It's certainly a diamond in the rough, there are a few places to eat locally, but I am glad I stopped here. Their entire menu is VERY reasonably priced. Their lunch specials average $6! There is a charge of $.75 for ordering off the lunch special menu if it's after 3pm. Portion size is large, bring your appetite! I had huevos rancheros and paid less than $7. The meal consisted of four tortillas (choice of corn or flour) , rice, refried beans, three eggs, and toppings. It was delicious and filling. I recommend trying their horchata.. it is a sweet and refreshing rice water beverage.
google avatar

Ana A.

Yelp
Amazing place, amazing price, amazing staff! The food is pretty good and I just didn't give 5 stars because my carne assada wasn't as great I expected. Was good and had a lot of meat but wast amazing. My husband chicken enchiladas and he absolutely love it! To be fair they have the best rice and beans I ever had, I had to order a side to go. We also had fried ice cream and was pretty good. I can't wait to come back and try the fajitas.
google avatar

Yelp
A charming restaurant. Great for families, large selection, smidge slow to take the order but lightening fast service. A great find for travelers.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
This place by far is the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I made a Yelp account just to make a review about this place. First the plates are so hot the waiter has to wear oven mitts just to serve us food. Like so hot if you touch them they burn your finger. I ordered tacos and they came with mozzarella on them? Zero flavor. My wife's food looked and tasted like cat food soaked in a can of hunts tomato sauce. Our daughters chicken nuggets were burnt and she couldn't bite through them. The waiter had no personality and wouldn't smile, but kept touching the back of our daughters hair, and holding his hand. Just an odd and bad experience. Would not recommend.

Yelp
I went here with my boyfriend, who is a connoisseur of Mexican food and can usually judge what's worthwhile much better than a gringa like myself. We were both a bit skeptical at first especially given that we were in Somerset, PA - not really a place known for great Mexican. However, we left giving them five stars! The food was delicious and filling and we were very impressed. I had an enchilada combo and he had the Guadalajara Special. Both were great. Our only gripe we had was that their salsa was too mild and tasted a bit like ketchup... but the server was happy to bring us a much hotter salsa/sauce that would fulfill even the most demanding of palettes. I would love to come back and try more when I'm back in Western PA, which is at least once a year. I'll definitely recommend this place to friends, family and hungry travelers.

Yelp
Long wait for food. Hopefully that just meant it was super fresh. The food did taste good. Came out hot. Good selection of food on the menu. They even have horchata. The place was generally dirty. The blinds were covered in stuff.
google avatar

Yelp
Another great meal here at Rey Azteca! One of my favorite restaurants in Somerset. The Chalupa Texana was made to perfection. If you haven't tried this restaurant then you are missing out.
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Very good Mexican food. Good prices and service. The pork carnitas were truly good. PS the fajitas give off a heavenly aroma. This is certainly one of the best places in Somerset. A solid 4 stars.
google avatar

Rae N.

Yelp
Very Authentic! Go here all the time and it's always fantastic. Delicious food, nice staff and a fun and CLEAN environment. All they need now is a bigger parking lot!
google avatar

Meena G.

Yelp
Pros: Quick wait time for a table and good meals! Cons: salsa and chips aren't the best!
google avatar

Conrad W.

Yelp
My son and I have stopped here for dinner several times recently. He likes the refried beans and rice. I ordered the beef fajitas both times. The fajitas are cut into thin strips and served in a hot cast iron skillet. Unfortunately this quickly over cooks the fajita meat and dries it out. If they cut the meat thicker or if the skillet wasn't lava hot, the fajitas would be better. On the plus side, the service is quick, the price is reasonable, and they serve a generous portion of fajitas.

Brad L.

Yelp
I live in Wisconsin - a state not exactly known for their Mexican food. Therefore, when traveling I'm constantly on the lookout for good Mexican. Unfortunately, most is fairly ordinary. I visited Rey Azteca today for the first time. I ordered the Pork Burrito. It was fantastic. The pork was moist and crispy on the edges. The cheese sauce with verde mixed in was also very good. The rice was ordinary, but cooked well. The service was great (Obed was the name on the receipt). He was very prompt and polite. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
I'm always looking for authentic Mexican cuisine while on the road and there was no disappointment upon discovering Rey-Azteca at their Somerset location. Within a minute of walking in, I'd gotten my order placed and was eagerly anticipating what many other patrons were so clearly enjoying. At 8 pm on a Friday, the cozy dining room was teeming with diners tucking into generous portions of delicious-looking food. I ordered the Burrito Cancun, stuffed with shrimp, bell peppers, tomatoes and onions, topped with a mild red salsa and served with yellow rice and refried beans. It arrived blazingly quick and piping hot in a portion that was generous but not overwhelming. The shrimp were plentiful and juicy; a delightful dish that could've stood on its own without my customary guacamole, sour cream and cilantro extras. The staff was friendly, attentive and quick. Decor was warm without being flashy and the tunes made for awesome seat-mambo. Above all, the price was perfect. I hear that they are family-owned and have more than one location. Well, they do it right, and more power to them (and to you.)

Yelp
I'm gonna be 100% honest here.. I friggin LOVE Rey Azteca! I had dined at the location in Johnstown many years before the Somerset location opened and I loved it, so needless to say I was pumped when we got our very own Rey Azteca in my hometown a few years ago. The staff here are the nicest people you will ever meet. Your beverages, baskets of chips, and carafes of salsa will never go empty. In addition to the service being pleasant, it's fast as all get-out. They have a great lunch menu that includes several combo options and smaller portions of their fantastic dinners at extremely reasonable prices. I love the Camarones Mexicanos -- tender, grilled shrimp topped with queso, served with a side of rice, lettuce, and guac. It also comes with tortillas to bundle everything up in, but I usually skip that and just inhale it in all it's cheesy goodness. Their quesadillas are muy fabuloso... and HUGE. For the couple of bucks you'll pay, you'll end up with practically two meals. Their guacamole is excellent too. Honestly, I can't say anything bad about this place. I even picked this place for my birthday lunch with my parents because I love it so much. I was disappointed when the Irwin location closed, because that was the closest one to where I live in Pittsburgh, but it's seriously worth the drive to Somerset to eat at this place.

Grace S.

Yelp
Best mexican restaurant in Somerset! This is our go to for date nights. Their food is ALWAYS good. Service is friendly and it's always a great experience :)

Yelp
We took a chance on this place not being familiar with this exit. And we were met with authentic flavors and quality ingredients. Swift and smiling servers. ¡Fantastico!

Yelp
Pretty solid Mexican food for the East Coast. Good service, good food with right sized portions. They have beers of the month for $3.50, today it was Pacifico, which is a preferred Mexican beer of mine. I went with the Fajitas Texanas, which were delicious , chicken, steak and shrimp for $15. Salsa was standard, when I asked for something spicier they gave a bottle of store bought salsa. If I'm in town again I will definitely stop by again.
google avatar

Sandy F.

Yelp
Great spot.. food was good. The service can be a bit improved... buy our waiter was still able to bring out order quickly. I will come back because this time I missed out on dessert FYI- they sell alcoholic drinks and have horchata

Yelp
My family and I had an amazing dinner here when we had to spend the night in Somerset during our road trip. The Decor The restaurant is nice. It is certainly not fancy, but that's ok. It was clean, and the decorations were very nice, not over the top corny, but gave a nice feel of mexico. The Service Our server was very friendly, knowledgeable, and fast. He answered our questions, recommended things, brought our drinks quickly, brought the food quickly, and got all of our orders correct. What more do you need? The Food I loved my Enchiladas Suizas. The salsa verde was tangy and tasty, and the cheese sauce was not overpowering. The chicken was tender and juicy. My wife got fish tacos, which she thoroughly enjoyed. My parents both got combo plates, and we got a quesadilla to share as an appetizer. Everything was hot, delicious, cooked perfectly, and authentic. We will definitely be back the next time we stay in Somerset.
