Where to Eat Dominican Food in Boston

"At Rey del Pollo in Roxbury, diners can find fried plantains, a variety of Dominican sandwiches, fried pork (get the chicharron), and a number of different fish dishes. Try the pescado con coco. The restaurant is counter-service." - Terrence Doyle

When I walked in, the older woman working the counter didn’t seem too interested in helping. She was on her phone and came off a little rude, like she didn’t really want to take my order. I ended up getting a combo for $15 — rice, beans, and what I thought was steak… turned out to be liver(my fault). Not really my thing, so I didn’t eat it. I asked for something else and the younger woman working there recommended the pork chop. She was really nice, even gave me a lemon and said that’s the best way to eat it. And honestly, she was right — the pork chop was pretty good. Got a pastelillo and a soda ended up paying $30. Not too bad. All in all, just an okay experience. Some good food, some not so great service. I’d give it another shot if I’m in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.

Food was ok but I seen the lady charge a guy in front of me the same amount of money but gave him way more food. The price was one thing but she rang it in for more than what she said it was

Google
Great for authentic Spanish food. Everything is made fresh daily. My favorite place 🙂

Google
I use to like this place but this last time was the worst experience. They serve me raw chicken and said they can’t replace it and once they did they were trying to force me to eat it before taking it 😡

Google
A little restaurant but the plates they serve are huge. We had no clue what we were getting ourselves into. But we couldn't go wrong with any choice.

Google
Delicious! I work down the street from this place and have ordered takeout twice. The first time I got a plate with stew chicken, rice and beans, and fried plantains. It was excellent. This time I got the ham and cheese sandwich which is huge and very yummy.

Google
Patalitos were good. Rotisserie chicken had way too much seasoning

Yelp
I dropped in on July the 8th along with my daughter hoping to grab a small to go snack. All 3 service staff behind the counter met us with blank, unwelcome glares. I chose to go go with a small order of white rice with pork rind. The rice portion was absolutely small. The price for the 2 item combo came to $11.05 after tax. Not a good price for the portion nor the service If you're driving through the neighborhood, and feeling a bit hungry you will be wise to hold out until you drive up Blue Hill Ave or a block over to Dudley Street where you will find a variety of restaurants that will meet your hunger's needs.

Yelp
This is one of the best Caribbean or Dominican style restaurants in Roxbury. The food is authentic and is very good.

Yelp
The most delicious tender chicken, amazing salad dressing, great staff, solid rice and beans and plantains, simply one of the best meals in Massachusetts, period! I'm a huge foodie snob and this is better than most pricey places here.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to trying this place out despite the mixed reviews. Unfortunately, it was the worst rotisserie chicken I have ever had. The chicken was completely burnt on the outside and so dry and over done to the point of being inedible. Cutting it probably only made matters worse as any juice was lost. 2 stars because the flavor was there, I could taste the seasoning, especially the oregano. If it hadn't been over done, it would have been really good. The sweet plantains were also burnt... sigh, a reoccurring theme.

Yelp
I was pretty excited to try this place out. I was craving for some simple rice and beans with fried pork. The fried pork was pretty good. Well seasoned and the fried fat from the pork belly was pretty airy. The rice and beans were a little dry and lack flavored. I was hoping to also try their rotisserie chicken but I didn't see it being available. We also tried their goat and spaghetti. The goat was lacking flavor also... spaghetti was decent. I am just a bit confuse with their pricing though. Got both mediums for each combo and was told it started at $10 for a medium. Portion size for the goat ($17) was not worth it at all... one scoop was given that was it... everything came out to be $34. Not worth it at all.

Yelp
Brought rice and beans ... they were spoiled and smelled sour... they had maggots in them...went back to restaurant they didn't apologize and told us the beans were good... never again!!! Disgusting...

Yelp
Horrible service ordered ahead and waited 50 minutes they didnt even have my order started when I arrived. Rude customer service.

Francis L.

Yelp
I placed a delivery order. The quipe was missing. I called them and they said they would send it right over but it never arrived. Called them again and they said they would talk to the girl that delivered it. I wanted my quipe. Will not order from there again.

Yelp
their food is good, but their attitudes fckn suck & it wasn't always this way . from what i noticed these days, it towards black people, especially the black women. me being one of them. very snippy/impatient, but always try to keep it super under the radar. i see you! which is why im leaving a 1 star review & will never spend another dime here. you set up shop in a black community & wanting black dollars. in fact the same black community support literally paid for your renovations & store upgrade! real ones remember how the inside of that store looked when ya'll was new around here! the "hood don't sleep!" respect us or gtfoh ! end story black/ african american people: . ** you've been warned! buy where you are respected!**

Yelp
I ordered take out from here recently. Upon picking up the food, I discovered that it is all pre-cooked and kept out in large warming trays on the counter. As such, my shrimp was wayyyy overcooked and rubbery. But also, they had obviously packed it up immediately after I ordered it and it sat there for at least 30 minutes until we picked it up. The rice and beans were good. Plaintains were cold and mushy. Avoid the shrimp. Avoid the king fish. In retrospect, I probably should have just ordered the chicken because you know...the whole king of chicken thing...next time!

Yelp
I ordered Pernil 2 days ago the pork was dry and you could tell it had been sitting. So I gave them another chance today, and ordered delivery. I waited a hour and a haf for the food, to never come. Then they kept telling me two minutes every time I called asking where my food was. I will NEVER ORDER from here again.

Yelp
I can't even deal with how good the food is here. I would it eat every day if I could. I'm not a big fan of eating/food...just find the whole process annoying...but damn did Rey Del Pollo change meal time excitement for me.

Yelp
Chicken was dry and tooo much pepper and seasoning! Wow all I can taste was the pepper... the beans where greasy and watery. The only item that was ok was the patellitos. Think twice before you order.

Lee L.

Yelp
Check your food before you leave. I ordered the stew pork with rice and beans. when I got home and opened the container everything smelled rancid, like it had been left out in the heat for 2 weeks.

Yelp
Best rotisserie chicken I've ever had! Random small place but really worth the drive to stop by and grab a fully ready chicken. You might want to call before going since they sell out pretty quickly every day. Addicted!

Yelp
Great NYC "cuchifrito" style food. Friendly service - and full of flavor. Cannot go wrong with specialty rotisserie chicken.

Madeline T.

Yelp
