Cuban restaurant · Richmond Heights
"Just north of Homestead is Redland—where the best pan con minuta we’ve ever eaten is. Reyes is a big open-air hut that sells local produce, honey, and fresh juices. But you’re coming here for Cuban food. Everything is hyper-local. The minuta is from a nearby fish farm, and you can thank Redland pigs for your lechon. Plus, portions are huge. They give you so much shredded vaca frita, it’s hard to close the styrofoam box it comes in. But that pan con minuta is the star of the menu. The minuta is meaty, the onions are vinegary, and the potato sticks are crunchy. End your meal with some dulce de leche cortada with sugary milk curds that squeak when you bite them." - virginia otazo, ryan pfeffer
"Why are we telling you to drive to Redland? Because it’s where the best pan con minuta we’ve ever eaten is. Reyes is an open-air straw hut that sells local produce, honey, and fresh juice. "This Redland Cuban spot gives you so much shredded vaca frita and congri, the top of the box ricochets open with the force of a medieval trebuchet. Since you’re here and hungry, you should also get the deli pint container filled with dulce de leche cortada. Those sugary milk curds squeak when you bite them. Pick up two—one for you and one for a friend. This is the kind of dessert that counts as a present." - mariana trabanino, ryan pfeffer, virginia otazo
"It’s a small honey and fruit market, a fresh juice bar, and has the absolute best pan con minuta around. You’ll find this Cuban palapa in Redland, which is also where they're sourcing the fish for the minuta and pork for the lechon. Even on a hot summer day, the breeze from Black Creek Canal’s flowing water keeps you cool while you eat here. Get a giant box full of vaca frita too. But do not leave without reaching your hand into one of the refrigerators on the side of the straw hut and grabbing some dulce de leche cortada with sugary milk curds that squeak when you bite them." - virginia otazo, ryan pfeffer
"If you’re out in Redland, you have to stop by Reyes for fresh watermelon juice and vaca frita. Even if you’re not in the area, we suggest making a little day trip out of it on a weekend—maybe on the way back from buying way too many hot sauces at Robert Is Here. Whichever Redland adventure you choose, Reyes’ vaca frita will keep you full throughout the day. A single serving easily feeds two. The vaca frita is finely shredded and has fine pieces of onion interlaced between all the crunchy bits. It’s also fluffier than most vaca fritas. We like getting ours with moros and maduros." - virginia otazo
