This Food-Filled Road Trip Celebrates West Virginia's Appalachian Culture | Bon Appétit

"A modest, understated American Chinese institution popular for family gatherings and community occasions; the food is reliably hot and consistent, and it also serves a regional specialty—spicy cabbage soup with hush puppies—that locals associate with bygone steakhouses, a tasty mystery passed down without a known origin." - ByCrystal Good, as told to Jen Choi

My daughter lived in Cross Lanes for years while going to school. She constantly talked about how good this place was. I had given into the fact that all Chinese restaurants served the same food with mildly different levels of quality. I was wrong. This place is heads above any Chinese food I have ever eaten. I highly recommend the hush puppies and Crab Rangoons. They also have a General Tsos that isnt the same old Asian "BBQ" style sauce you usually get. This is also the best Lo Mein I have ever eaten. Highly highly recommend.

Google
Service was fine, food was as expected for any buffet style Chinese restaurant but this one was a sit down menu style restaurant when I went in the late afternoon. I had a shrimp tempura sushi and it was good but not the best sushi I've ever had. I was told the hush puppies were a local favorite but I found them a bit dry and just tasted like Chinese donuts in a hush puppy shape. The little sweet cream dip, whatever it was tasted good but mainly because it's sugar.

Google
We ordered appetizers. We ordered egg rolls, soup and crab ragoons and they were all hot fresh and delicious! We ordered general tso and teriyaki chicken with fried rice as entrees! We had plenty to eat and take leftovers. Our server was attentive, prompt, and friendly. For what we paid it was a steal for the quality and quantity!

Google
Food was bland and it looked like it was cooked by a microwave. Chicken was not crunchy at all and eggroll was full of oil. Bubble tea was alright; they missed a topping and i had to go back in and ask for it. Alot of people recommended this place and it looks like it's false advertised.

Google
Nice Chinese and Sushi restaurant that's been around for many years. Great EZ parking lot, and got a friendly greeting, along with being seated right away. I was attended to by three different wait staff. They must team together and they were attentive and friendly. I tried a Seafood Delight and it came with all sorts of seafood with veggies: shrimp, scallops, lobster, and sealegs. It was served with brown rice. I prefer white rice and I believe it would have made a tasty dish even better. It was not offered, though. I also tried eel sushi and a spicy tuna and spicy salmon combo roll. Both were very good. The menu is so extensive that I'm going to have to keep coming here! I recommend that you try it if you haven't already. BTW: it's about a 1/2 mile north off of exit 47 (Cross Lanes) from Rt 64. EZ off, EZ on. Charlie, the cat approved (He's my special boi).

Google
ZERO stars. We had not been to this restaurant for a year or more, as they brought us cold and not fresh hushpuppies (appetizer) the last visit or two. We gave it another shot, wanting something different. Yet again, they brought cool / not warm at all hushpuppies to us, IMMEDIATELY after ordering them. I noted to the server that they were cold and we wanted fresh ones, please. They brought the same ones back, that they “dropped in the fryer” to heat them back up and they were soggy and gross. Who does this and tells you? I don’t understand why they are having fried items, not made fresh but ready / on hand, when there aren’t even three tables seated. We would have spent more money if they just made the item they offer on the menu fresh. Makes zero sense. We won’t return and I caution others. Disappointing.

Google
We love the timeless Cabbage Soup & Hushpuppies with honey butter from the Riversedge Restaurant back on the day! They bought the recipe from the Frame Family upon closure! And you can’t go wrong with any of their sushi! We typically dine in but being under the weather-this is an awesome lunch! Conveniently located right off from the Interstate! Gas up and travel on!

Google
I had someone pass away in my family and I didn’t feel like cooking so I asked my son to pick up some food. Yes everything he ordered was there but the rice was bland, peas were hard, chicken was wet not one bit of crunch, and the tiny egg rolls were not cooked throughout. When I expressed about a return I had to go through three different staff members to be told he don’t feel comforting me a refund back I said ok, I was to emotional to argue left the food no money back and walked out, disgusted is my word for this establishment.

Yelp
Try the onion pancakes. Absolutely the best app with a great sauce! For my main meal I ordered the General Tso's chicken with fried rice and it was really good. Only reason for four stars instead of five was the service. I would have liked my drink refills more timely and without having to ask.

Yelp
I have always really liked the food here. It is fresh and tasty. When eating in, the wait staff is always friendly and attentive. However, today, I wanted to order a small salad with my sushi roll and was told I had to buy a full size salad. I asked why I couldn't buy one like you get with the combos. The waitress went and asked somebody and they refused to sell me a small salad. I don't get it.

Yelp
Great long time spot for yummy Chinese. Very clean and inviting. Went mid week to great service and a varied menu. Don't judge this place by the silly name, it is a great place to go in the Kanawha valley.

Yelp
My mistake was ordering Pad Thai from a Chinese place, through DoorDash nonetheless. What I received was the poorest attempt I've ever encountered in my life. I'm actually embarrassed on their behalf. I'm the type that very rarely wastes food, but it went straight into the garbage can. There was nothing Pad Thai about it. The noodles were complete mush and inedible. A few tiny salad shrimp, no cilantro, no lime, no sprouts, and NO PAD THAI SAUCE?! I think there was some crushed peanuts, but couldn't be sure if that's what it was. I may have been able to look past all the missing ingredients, but the noodle mush was just too awful. Never again.

Yelp
Second time picking up from Rice Bowl, same as last, disappointing. The beef with garlic was more vegetables than beef. It was also very bland with no taste. The spicy "korean" mustard for the spring rolls is water down. They have changed up their menu or cutting corners to save money, far cry from what it used to be. Conveniently location, sadly will not attempt to try again

Yelp
This is a great sushi place in the Cross Lanes area. I'm coming back to WV from Cali so was trying to figure out how the sushi is here and thankfully Teaghan at Rice Bowl helped me choose the West Virginia roll and it was divine. Crunchy shrimp on top of avocado and crabmeat tempura with eel sauce and a special tangy sauce. Delish. Great lunch specials. Today, I got the hot and sour soup, it's perfect in the fall and winter days plus they make fresh homemade wonton crisps to go with it. I love the tuna sashimi. It's excellent and fresh. I crave it all of the time.

Yelp
Me and my brother love going her the sweet and sour chicken are great would recommend.

Yelp
Ordered here for Christmas dinner, and they were extremely busy, which we totally understand. The food is usually pretty decent for the price. We ordered 1 pu pu(?) Platter, 3 Singapore Noodles with Curry, 3 egg rolls, 2 spicy California rolls, and 1 avacado roll. It was $73.88 The prices on the website are out of date so the price was a bit of a shock. They also failed to give us a receipt when we asked as I wanted to check what the price of each of the items were. They also crushed a sauce when bagging the order in front of my husband. We ordered a pu pu platter, and received 1 each of chicken wing/leg (dried out and hard to chew), beef on a stick (flat and hard like jerky-good flavor but hard to chew), crab Rangoon(nice!), beef rib (which was amazing) and an egg roll. The Singapore noodles with curry was pretty good but kinda dry. It was mostly noodles with very little of anything else. This is something we order everytime and this has continued to become more noodles and less substance with time. I love sushi, and the California and Avacado roll ingredients were amazing. I would like to have a good amount of rice on them, and have the rice not be overcooked. I don't think I would have such a problem with anything if I felt it was a good value for the money. I love this restaurant, but since covid we've seen a dramatic increase in prices while the food quality and size has been reduced. I think this is something happening everywhere, but shrink portions OR raise prices, not both.

Carmen T.

Yelp
The restaurant use to provide really great good. Over the past 6 months the food is not good. I ordered Pad Tai and it had dry noddles with onions. The dish had 4 shrimp. No flavor. I have had others to tell me they keep having bad experiences now.

Yelp
Good food, great people!! They play rock, I would like to hear traditional Chinese music. Also the store items in the Buffett tray in the open. That's just minor things that would make it better. But, it is clean and tasty. I'll keep returning. Service is great, the people are quick and kind

Yelp
Great spot in Cross Lanes! It was pretty busy, but our waitress was very nice and attentive. We had the crab rangoon, which was hot and full of flavor. Then I had the orange chicken, which had a robust sauce with a nice touch of citrus and a bit of spice. My companion had the sweet and sour chicken, which was nice but could've used more veggies. So glad we checked Yelp on this trip, because we never would've found this great spot!

Jade O.

Yelp
I just spent 80 dollars on a meal that was completely flavorless . Over the last two years I have tried and tried to eat here but every time it is awful . The only things that were good was the hush puppies and the crab Rangoon . I will not be giving this place another chance .
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Absolute best Chinese food around. Quality is second to none. Blows everyone else away. A little pricier than some, but worth every penny! Noodles, rice cocked just right. Crab Rangoon is on point! Can't recommend enough!!
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
Great food and a fixture in CrossLanes, WV area, you must try the Hot &Sour soup, Tempura and Sushi all served by a cheerful and friendly staff. When you go don't forget to tip your server.
google avatar

Melaney P.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese in the Charleston area. I have found they are usually in a hurry preparing food to go. My most current order I asked for the creamed cheese wontons. If they had paid attention they would have noticed that the cream cheese mixture was missing out of the product.
google avatar

Justin B.

Yelp
The food is good but if you order online and choose to pay with cash they will not start cooking your food until you actually walk in to pick it up so you will be waiting about 20 minutes but if you pay online with a card it will be ready when you arrive.
google avatar

Nancy V.

Yelp
My absolute favorite Chinese restaurant! We've been going here for many years and usually order take out. The food is always hot, exactly what we ordered, and packaged well. We have moved away from the area and when we come back to visit, this is one of the first places we come to!

Debra C.

Yelp
called in an order. it was ready super quick but everything tasted really bland and was really greasy. Have given it a few tries and it hasn't changed.
google avatar

Roy C.

Yelp
One of the best Chinese restaurants in town. They also have very good sushi. Great for takeout. They are a to go window that is very convenient. Great chicken lo mein and beef dishes.
google avatar

Mackie W.

Yelp
This is my absolute favorite Chinese restaurant. This is the only place I get takeout from. I live 40 minutes away and drive past more than half a dozen other Chinese restaurants on my way here.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Some of the best Chinese cuisine I've ever eaten!! Great prices and service as well. I eat here as often as I can

Adam B.

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. Food always comes out hot and staff and owners are great.

Michelle M.

Yelp
This was an amazing little place with great food and great service. We saw so many locals coming in and out we knew it must be good. The hush puppies come with a honey cinnamon butter and we're delicious. The pad thai and honey chicken was also great. Even the tea was good. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
We have the lunch buffet at least 3 times a month. Best. Chinese. Buffet. In. The. Area! Incredible tasting food, clean restrooms, always stocked up during the lunch hours and quick service.
google avatar

Jeffrey B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery and the food was hot and fresh when we got it. Everything was correct and had a great taste. Will definitely be ordering from here again when I'm back in the area.

Yelp
I don't normally compain about trivial things, but this is BEYOND insane!! We have been CRAVING chinese lately and finally decided To go get it this evening at Rice Bowl (pickup only and they call your name and put the bag on a table for you to get it). I called at 5:34 pm while almost to the cross lanes exit from hurricane. I then got to Cross lanes and in 10 minutes, i moved MAYBE 1 car length. I called Rice Bowl back and told them i wanted to cancel my order. The lady that answered checked with someone and told me my order had not been made yet and that it was fine. I turned around to come back home. About 15 Minutes later, I received a call and the man said i needed to come get my order because they decided to go ahead and make it. I told him that i cancelled my order before it was made and i wanted my money refunded. He told me he was NOT going to refund my money because he went ahead and made it. I reiterated what the other woman told me and he said that it didnt matter because they made it. I told him that what he was doing had to be illegal!!!! He told me that he had my credit card information and was still going to charge my card and would NOT reverse it! I told him i was going to report him to the BBB!! He said that was just fine and hung up! THEN he charged my card!! I was flabbergasted! I have contacted my bank and reported a fraudulent charge and going to contact the BBB as well! Just sharing in hopes that others don't give them any of their business! We had wanted to try their restaurant before and never did. Now i'm glad we haven't!!!! Thank goodness Taste of Asia is opening tomorrow!

Yelp
Great food and great service! Highly recommend in and around the Cross Lanes area. I'm a fan!

Yelp
We love it here! The food is fantastic! A bit on a language barrier but other wise it's great
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I enjoy coming to the Rice Bowl for lunch. Amazing sushi and a great buffet!

Theresa M.

Yelp
Nothing to look at inside or out, but GREAT FOOD and KIND SERVERS!!! Visited twice in June 2022.
google avatar

Rebecca U.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese food around hands down!! Always fresh always yummy!! They have wonderful staff and take the time to really get to know their customers!
google avatar

Tina B.

Yelp
Food completely and nasty. Shrimp mushy along with beef. Now how do you get beef mushy.smh spring rolls dripping with grease and I mean dripping. Only thing they said was sorry. I threw the food away. 45 dollars wasted.

Susan H.

Yelp
Checked out Rice Bowl for dinner tonight. They recently opened their sushi area and are offering a wide array of creative options. We ordered the Mi So Pretty, Paradise, and Pink Lady rolls. To our surprise, the rolls arrived beautifully presented on a sushi boat. The Paradise roll had the addition of fresh banana in it and the Pink Lady had sweet mango. Super different. They also offer the pink soy paper which is a nice alternative to the seaweed wrapper. As a nice surprise, they included a sampler of a sushi-style jalapeño popper - tuna, cream cheese, and a spicy drizzle. Yum! We were very full. Two rolls were probably plenty but the third roll provided us with a little variety. We had leftovers. Closed the order with a half dozen of their delicious sweet hush puppies with honey butter. Those are for later when I am less full! ;). Best of luck to Andy and his family!

Yelp
This place is VERY interesting. On one hand, you have a great Chinese buffet and some fantastic service. On the other hand, this restaurant has something VERY special on their menu. If anyone remembers River's Edge, a restaurant that was closed several years ago, this Chinese Restaurant has River's Edge's hush puppy's, cabbage soup, and salad. These three items alone are worth a visit, but the rest of the food is so good that you won't be disappointed either way! You must check this place out!

Jeana T.

Yelp
3/31/20 due to covid19 my husband and I haven't ate out for several weeks. However, I had to risk it to get some Rice Bowl. Yes they are open to carry out only and they have the protection down pat. They are taking orders online or over the phone and they request credit cards over the phone so they are maintaining the 6' parameter. The girl comes to the door masked and gloves, waves one person on the porch, gets the name and requests the person step off the porch. She then brings out the food and places the bagged food on the table. Once she leaves, you are allowed to go the table to pick up the order and sign the receipt. Other places we've heard aren't even wearing gloves. Thank You Andy 1/15/20 I love this place. My belly is full and I want to keep eating. I love their sizzling rice chicken and the crab Rangoon's are the best I ever had. If you remember river's edge, then you will love their cabbage soup, hush puppies, old main salad and more

Yelp
My family and I went too this place and it was DISGUSTING.We did the Buffet choice, when we went too get food there was barely anything up there and when I got the teriyaki chicken it was barely even cooked!I ate one piece of the food there and had to starve the rest of the day because of this reason.

Pam B.

Yelp
We were driving thru and grabbed takeout. Only ordered combination fried rice and pork lo mein and both were great! I'm a long time Chinese food lover (regular on Mott St in the 1970's). Cannot speak to the whole menu but we were both shocked at how good those dishes were. Will put in our travel book and stop every time we r going thru. Wish we lived closer!
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
They have stepped up their game and their sushi is amazing!! With their lunch deal from 11-3:30 being so awesome this has become a weekly stop!

Julie B.

Yelp
We just ordered here for the first time tonight. We had fried rice, lava shrimp and crab Rangoon's. The only issue I had is that it was difficult to get through with a call in order. We finally did it online and everything else went great. We will be back.

Paulette J.

Yelp
Drove from Huntington to pickup my order 7.20.21; ordered sizzling rice and shrimp; drove home and was given szechuan chicken; called to inform of mistake and he stated "you told her that; I told I couldn't tolerate spicy foods so I know did not say- he wanted to argue with me; no "customer is right at this establishment; I've eaten there over 20 times- but that's my last
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
Rice Bowl is good y'all. I always order off of the menu as I'm not really a buffet type of gal. Their crab Rangoon is my favorite ice ever eaten, probably because it's made fresh right when you order unlike most places. No matter what I have here, it's always really good.
google avatar

Peggy S.

Yelp
Love rice bowl, favorite Chinese restaurant in the area. No complaints here because everything is great

BIlly F.

Yelp
This place is absolutely unprofessional and rude. There wasn't near enough chicken in my meal when I had ordered extra and the OWNER insisted that he cooked it and that it was right, absolutely refusing to hear a complaint about his food. Extremely rude. Unprofessional. And the food isn't very good either. It's just the only place close. Will definitely never order food from there again. Maybe next time try not to mess up a CHEFS food.
google avatar

C B.

Yelp
I ordered the Old Main salad and cabbage soup. Waited for quite a while for the owner to get off the phone with a bill collector before waiting on me. No apology for my wait. No utensils. Salad has absolutely no cheese or egg as described. Soup inedible. I had bad service last time so they are off my list for good.
google avatar

Grace P.

Yelp
i would give 4 stars since i usually never have a problem, but i fear because of Covid they might be using expired products as i got horrifically sick after just 2-3 hours of eating here.
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
The Rice Bowl is part generic Americanized Chinese and part pure West Virginia. The GAC is expected with all the standard fare: fried rice (best in the area), eggrolls, Moo Goo Gai Pan and General Tso's etc. etc., all done well if uninspired. But the real treat is the free appetizer serving of sweet hush puppies with honey butter. These are the exact same that used to be featured at the late, lamented River's Edge in St. Albans, which isn't all that surprising since both restaurants share a few cooks. Nice layout with real cloth tablecloths and your choice of cozy booths or good-sized tables. Lunch buffet is decent. If you want the trough experience I'd recommend the the Asian place near Wal-Mart. I almost always opt for the menu myself. Worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood.

Ed T.

Yelp
We have driven by this place every day, since returning to WV 12 years ago. Three months ago I decided to stop in and now the Rice Bowl is our Friday diner every Friday. We have yet to find an item on the menu that did not meet expectations. Appetizers, soups, rolls and entrees have yet to let us down.
google avatar

Roy B.

Yelp
Simi service animal friendly. The manager (who said she was the owner when I asked) said she had to had proof it's a service animal and then tried to kick is out and when I asked her name and told her I was going to file an ada complaint she then calls the "owner" and changes her tone. Then they set us in the back hidden out of sight.

Tim C.

Yelp
The best Chinese restaurant in the area by far. My favorite meal of all time is their Orange Chicken. The staff and the owners are great. They are friendly, courteous, and professional. I highly recommend it. Great food.
