This 1860 Italianate townhouse, known for its four-seasons iron lacework, offers docent-led tours with period furnishings, Mobile lore, and a gracious tea-and-cookies finale. Operated by local DAR chapters, it’s beloved by architectural historians and frequently recommended by regional outlets for an intimate look at nineteenth‑century Mobile life. A perfect pairing with a stroll through De Tonti Square.

We loved this museum!! Sheila and Mimi were so welcoming and helpful. They know all the great stories about this place. I am so grateful to the DAR for supporting this magnificent slice of history in Mobile! Loved it and so did my family!!!

✨🙏 definitely come here for a short photo stop.. the Richard DAR House is one of the most beautiful and charming historic homes in Mobile, Alabama. It was built in 1860 by Captain Charles G. Richards. It has a beautiful Italianate-style facade and is typical for the Mobile of the 19th century.

I enjoyed the tour very much. Sheila had a vast amount of knowledge about the property and it was beautiful inside and out. Her knowledge and the house itself are well worth the price of admission. You will get to see beautiful furniture, chandeliers, and items that show how Americans used to live.

Nice place and interesting things to see. The history of the building has nothing to do with the DAR but still a nice place to check out if you’re inclined. They offer tea and cookies at the end of your tour. My pics give an idea of the location relative to the downtown area.

I went on a tour that stopped here. I did not go inside.

Yelp
What an amazing tour! I came on a Saturday morning just after they opened for the day. Street parking in front. The railings are all so beautiful and well maintained. The lady giving the tour was very knowledgeable and friendly. I loved that they knew the history and presented it well. Reasonable admission price. I liked that at the end you got a mug of hot tea and cookies.

Yelp
This is such a lovely piece of history! We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Richards DAR House Museum. Our amazing tour guides, Sheila and Mimi, gave us so much valuable information and even took our picture in the house. Both Sheila and Mimi were so kind, thoughtful, knowledgeable and entertaining. It is a beautiful place!! Big thumbs up!

Yelp
Fantastic pre civil war house with the most genteel hosts you can imagine and one of the best southern staircases you will ever see. Period but not original to the house furnishings. Inexpensive and parking on the street. Don't miss it. 45 minutes or so

Yelp
Did not care for this museum. Very little to see and not great curb appeal. The Bragg Mitchell mansion was way more cool than this place

Yelp
Two sweet, cute older ladies run the tour. Judy gives the tour for upstairs; Laura gives the tour downstairs. Very informative. Hands on; you are allowed the touch most of the things here. You definitely have to come for a busy. "Y'all come back now, ya here?"

Yelp
Great house! Go up and ring the doorbell. You get the tour of a period house completed in 1860 with period furniture that has been collected and donated. We had a wonderful private tour of the house with fun facts and history. What was really nice was being able to touch the furniture, sit in the chairs and get a real understanding for what things were like. The ladies did a wonderful job. The house was a real treat. The cost was $10 for adults 13 and up and $5 for kids. The real young ones might be free. Enjoy!

Yelp
Absolutely delightful experience for all of us. We made a point to take the advice of other reviewers and check this place out, we are so happy we did! We arrived at 11am when they open, and had the two tour guides all to ourselves. They both made every inch of the house come alive, and so interesting. My husband and I brought our 8 year old son and 14 year old daughter, and each of us fully enjoyed the experience. Our son was the resistant one, but was fully involved the entire tour! The ladies giving the tour make this experience so special. I agree, this museum should be required for visits to Mobile. What a treasure!

Yelp
We visited here right before Christmas while volunteers were busily bedecking the halls. Although they were all hard at work one of the ladies stopped and gave us an unhurried tour of the first floor, then passed us on to another docent who had already finished her task for the tour of the second floor. I you are in Mobile and have an interest in historical homes, GO! Southern hospitality and extremely knowledgable guise made the experience memorable.

Yelp
MUST SEE!! The is a wonderful example of an Italianate house. The house and period furniture are beautiful. The guides tell fascinating stories of the times and people in this Detonte square location. Easy to find and park. They are closed on Tuesdays. Well worth the trip and they have a GREAT gift shop!!!

Yelp
Unfortunately, we arrived too late to take a tour of this home, but the outside of the home is breathtaking with the cast-iron fence and posts at the front of the home. The side view of the home shows that it is a much bigger home from what you see from the street. Will be back on our next trip here.

Yelp
I was here around Christmas and I really enjoyed this museum. The two ladies who were there on the day that I went were the epitome of Southern Hospitality. The house is gorgeous and at the end of the tour you get tea and cookies :-). When you step in the house it's like stepping back in time and everything is well preserved. This is a tour that you must do over and over again so I will be back when I am in Mobile.

Yelp
A beautiful house and a wonderful staff. Very knowledgable. The tea and cookies at the end of tour are a great touch. Loved it.

Yelp
My husband found this gem of a house online and I'm so glad we were able to visit it on our quick trip through Mobile. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by Sandra and Frances (two of the nicest Southern ladies you'll ever meet!). We had the whole house to ourselves :-) Be sure to check out the red Bohemian glass panels around the front door once you go inside. Even the restrooms that were built in the 1940s are delightfully decorated. Be sure to stay for tea and cookies after the tour is over.

Yelp
Thank you to Laura & Judy, the two adorable women who are members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (hence the DAR in the name of the establishment) who gave us our tour! Both of them were so sweet, kind & informative (and Judy had a great sense of humor too!) The Richards home was really an interesting look at life in Mobile 150 years ago. As a visitor to Mobile from New York City, this is exactly the kind of attraction you want to be able to support, and at $10, it was well worth it!
