The Best Ice Cream in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Think some of the places on this map are old? Nothing beats Richardson’s, a continuously operating dairy farm since 1695. (Ice cream came into play in the 1950s at Richardson’s, and wholesale business began in 1978.) The eighth and ninth generations of the Richardson’s family are in charge these days. The flagship Middleton location includes cows, sheep, ducks, and more animals; mini golf, batting cages, and a driving range; and, of course, plenty of ice cream. There’s also a location at Jordan’s Furniture in Reading. Sample flavors: double chocolate, coffee Kahlua brownie, totally turtle, bubble gum, Maine black bear" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
Close friends took us here as their favorite close to home ice cream spot, and both they, and these reviews, didn’t lie! Wow! 🤩 the line was out the door and the place was PACKED! But it moved fast. You could see why. When you see this many people you want to assume it must be good but hope it’s living up to the hype, and it surely did! You can see how they’ve stayed around since 1695!!! Wow! They cracked the code and keep executing it and it’s wonderful. All the ice creams and sorbets we got were out of this world delicious! I really liked the raspberry sorbet! It was a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness but felt like “cold stone creamery” but it was sorbet! Was wicked cool and wicked good! 🤤 🍨 our other ice creams were great and was worth the wait. They have any flavor you could think of. It’d take effort to be disappointed here! The staff was polite, attentive, and friendly. Really nice establishment! I’d recommend anyone come from Near and far!

Google
As a Canadian tourist visiting Boston, I had the chance to try Richardson’s Ice Cream and it was an impressive experience. They offer more than 50 unique flavors, each bursting with rich taste, which makes it a must-visit spot for ice cream lovers. The only challenge was the long wait — the line took almost an hour, and even at 7 p.m. on a Sunday, the parking lot was completely full and finding a spot wasn’t easy. Despite the wait and parking issues, I would still highly recommend Richardson’s to anyone visiting Massachusetts for its authentic, flavorful ice cream and enjoyable atmosphere

Google
This farm ice cream spot is an absolute gem—hands down the best place for ice cream in the entire country. The quality, flavor, and freshness are unbeatable. Their Strawberry Cheesecake ice cream is on another level—rich, creamy, and packed with real flavor. It’s so good that I buy a half-gallon every time I visit, and I still can’t get enough! Even better, the prices are incredibly affordable, especially for how high-quality everything is. If you’re anywhere nearby, don’t miss this place. It’s worth the trip—and honestly, worth driving hours for. Highly recommended!

Google
Classic New England Dairy Farm ice cream. Really nice vibes. Came here this past weekend after dinner. Unlike bigger operations like Kimball Farms where you need a ticket to enter, this place was much more relaxed. A large open area where you can walk around and pet animals (or play mini golf). Parking got tricky after 6, but still manageable. For ice cream, they didn’t have a lot of creative/unique flavors, but some of the ones we tried were still great. Our favorites were the Blueberry Pie and French Vanilla. The former had fluffy bits of pie crust folded in, which added a comforting touch. The French Vanilla tasted almost exactly like the one I grew up with (the Original “Excellent” ice cream from Korea), so it was a bit nostalgic. On the other hand, the other two flavors were just okay. Maple Walnut was a bit too heavy and ended up overpowering everything else. Orange Pineapple sorbet leaned a little artificial, but it was needed reset the palate between other scoops.

Google
The ice cream is amazing. So many flavors and they’re all good. The prices and also great for the amount of ice cream you get. We also bring our cooler and buy a gallon of milk when we go. There’s always a line on the weekends. We also love the mini golf and batting cages. The mini golf is a little more expensive (over $30 for three of us) but the batting cages are a great deal at $2 for 12 pitches or you can get 10 tokens for $16. It’s also fun to walk around the grounds and see the animals.

Google
Been here a couple of times, got ice cream and froyo. I double checked that it was the froyo and I don't know if the guy got me actual ice cream or if it isn't actually 95% less fat because the froyo looks just like the ice cream here. My medical condition flared up that day and the only thing different I had was the "froyo". I ended up being in quite a bit of pain, I'm on a low fat/no fat diet due to it. I would not recommend getting the froyo if you have similar problems. Otherwise the ice cream is pretty good but everything here is extra sticky as opposed to other places.

Google
During the summer you can get the ice cream from outside, in the winter you go into the shop. There is a good selection, and the flavors taste good. Bunch of young workers, so keep that in mind. Unfortunately they don't have a bathroom inside for customers which was pretty disappointing.

Google
The creamiest, best ice cream North of Boston. Updates to the property enhance the farm atmosphere. New cow facilities let you watch how a robot milks a cow. Cool technology.

Yelp
Can't go wrong going here ice cream is great mini golf great everything great all around. They supply ice cream for all of New England it's the best.
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
Ice cream and yogurt are amazing here. You can see the cows and other various farm animals behind the ice cream shop. They have grocery items to go as well inside. The lines get looooong but it's worth it! You can go inside and order or order from the lines outside as well. Fresh milk and mix ins like fruits are so tasty.

Yelp
Loved that we stopped by at this location to get some amazing ice cream. We literally stopped about 30 mins prior to closing time and the lines were stilllll super long. The employee was very nice and he was able to get our order out quick. We ordered two banana splits and one butter pecan ice cream with a waffle cone. My butter pecan was one of the best I've had. The texture of the ice cream was very creamy and the flavor, ooh was the best. The waffle cone was also very good! The banana splits were huge!! These are big enough for two people to share. The line moved quick. We were able to find a picnic table around the corner. Definitely stop by if you're in the area! Its worth the stop!!

Yelp
My roommate had told me about how great Richardson's was, so when I saw they had their ice cream at a festival in the North End, I knew I had to try it out! I got the Green Monster (mint base with Oreo and fudge) and Coffee Oreo. Both were delicious and had plenty of Oreo chunks. They also had a number of other flavors like Tollhouse cookies, in addition to the normal vanilla and chocolate types. The ice cream had just the right level of sweetness and creaminess, but wasn't overly decadent. I can't speak to the quality at the actual Richardson's storefront location, but the ice cream I had at the fair had the perfect texture and didn't melt too quickly! Overall, I recommend for a refreshing treat on a hot day.

Yelp
I stopped by Richardson's on a Thursday evening around 8:30 PM, and the place was poppin'! The batting cages, the mini golf, and the driving range next door were all packed, so I'm assuming these two businesses share most of their customers because the ice cream lines were packed as well. The outside ice cream lines seemed to go by really quickly, though, because they had adequate staff helping customers to speed things along. I skipped the outside lines and went inside to purchase pre-packaged take-home ice cream containers. The young guy who was stocking the freezer was super sweet and helpful in recommending flavors for me since it was my first time there. I got the Coffee Oreo, the Coconut Almond Joy, and the Blueberry Pie flavors, and all were a hit at home. Let me also say that the grounds of the establishment are beautiful! There are plenty of picnic tables for customers to sit at and enjoy their treats or the overall dairy, which includes cows, chickens, and goats for customers to look at. They also have a couple of large tractors which were a huge hit with all of the kiddos who were running around. There's plenty of parking, too. I feel like this is a great family-friendly place. I'll definitely be returning when I have out-of-town visitors.

Yelp
Good service, excellent ice cream. My kids and I come here every time we visit the New England area.
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
I love their ice cream but was really sad to learn they use red 40 and blue 1 dyes in their recipes :( being pregnant I won't eat these artificial chemicals. For local homemade ice cream I can go elsewhere without these harmful ingredients. The ice cream is good though.

Marilynne P.

Yelp
Fast service and amazing ice dream. Perfect for all ages. From mini golf to the cows loved it all

Scott S.

Yelp
It's a large, six or seven window outside ice cream stand. It also has an inside area for ordering and eating ice cream. They also have freezers with hand packed qt's , gallons of the most popular flavors. I go inside to get my gallon of whole milk. So behind the stand there's the cows, you can go see while eating ice cream. Sometimes they have baby cows.! The breading , milking, Pasteurization and ice cream making is all done onsite. I have seen ice cream in Florida advertising Richardson's. (mike dropped)..... Cheers
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Best flavor hands down - phantom berry. It's unique and so good. They have pints, quarts and gallons to-go. Very reasonable prices. We always get something to go. The speciality flavors they will hand pack for you. The fresh milk at their store is also a must. Soft serve is really creamy
google avatar

Tori T.

Yelp
Best ice cream in the area by far! The campfire s'mores is my absolute favorite ice cream. I wish they would add it to the freezer section of prepackaged ice creams so I don't feel bad making them scoop it on the spot with the huge lines!
google avatar

Victoria C.

Yelp
With so many flavors at Richardson's, it was hard to choose just one, so I ended up getting two, cotton candy and crunchasaurus. Both flavors were great, but they did melt quickly. The cotton candy was sweet, and rich, but didn't have that artificial taste that you'd expect. There were pieces of candy for the added crunch. The crunchasaurus is a pretty blue color with chocolate swirls and chips in it that was also creamy and delicious. They also sell pints, half a gallon, and gallon-sized containers for you to take home your favorite flavor. I will definitely be back for more to try out more flavors and to take a pint or two home!

Maryann B.

Yelp
very good ice cream... especially the strawberry and chocolate chip. Often extremely crowded (especially when it's warm outside), the lines move fairly quickly.

Caitlin B.

Yelp
Gotta love Richardsons! I really feel like they made the best butter pecan ice cream around, and I love that you can get a hand packed quart of it. This establishment is a New England classic!
google avatar

Diana N.

Yelp
Checked this place out based on some recommendations! I bought a small (which let me try two flavors) oreo and ginger. The ginger had bits of ginger which I loved (it's a flavor you don't see often). You can definitely taste the creaminess of the ice cream but for me, I didn't get a strong oreo or ginger flavor. What's awesome is that they are a successful dairy farm! The service was helpful and with 10 windows, they can get through a ton of people in no time.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
I go to Richardson's boat twice the week to buy milk and usually get a small coffee ice cream or maple walnut ice cream. Everything is very fresh and made on site. The people that work there are great. I enjoy just walking back to the car and sitting there and having an ice cream and relaxing. I highly recommend this place. What do you want? Just a simple coffee, ice cream, Sunday, frappe float or anything else.
google avatar

Suzy Q.

Yelp
so good, cant even believe it - must buy wherever you see this amazingness is offered

Trace G.

Yelp
i'm pissed... I ordered a hot fudge sundae with mint chocolate chip ice cream. Keyword here.MINT... it was made with chocolate chip ice cream, not the same thing.. I haven't been here in years. I won't be back ever again.
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
Richardson's Farm makes some of the richest, most delicious, absolutely dreamy ice cream I have ever eaten! I'm a sucker for soft-serve but I cannot wait to go back and try their other ice cream flavors. This will have to be a regular trip. I will be back!

Quinn B.

Yelp
Very fun and good ice cream but seems to be a big issue great atmosphere and very busy so overall I recommend

Sam M.

Yelp
Love their Death by Chocolate flavor. I recommend Murder by Pistachio but still waiting to hear back. Good ice cream. A bit pricey but worth it.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
Never have reviewed this business. I've been there over 100 times in my life .This place and the ice cream is awesome. The prices are still good even in this recession. The ice cream is smooth and creamy . Inside they have quarts to go as well as milk, cream and eggs in the refrigerator case. They have miniature gf and farm animals out back to look at and feed . Cows are visible in the barn . The inside of ice cream store is clean and bright. They also have a golf range to hit balls and a outside batting cage for about 10 people at a time. The ice cream is of high quality. I highly recommend this place and commend them for running a great business for such a long time. A plus ice cream here !
google avatar

Danis L.

Yelp
Good, reasonable price ice cream. Many favors ice cream. U can walk around the farm while enjoying your ice cream
google avatar

Courtney B.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream. We have 5 tubs of their ice cream in our freezer. Mocha chip and coconut w/ almond joy are currently my two faves.
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
Next time I'm up in New England I'm definitely coming back! I had the Maple walnut and the green monster ice creams, both were insanely delicious. It's such a great place to bring your family. They have milk jugs ready for taking and packed ice cream. There are so many flavors to try!!
google avatar

Wendi K.

Yelp
Delicious, creamy, fresh ice cream. Excellent service. MASSIVE portions, especially for the price. I could only finish maybe half of my sundae and I can eat a lot of ice cream! We only tried the Crunchasaurus and the Maine Black Bear which were both amazing but I'm sure all the flavors are great. Beautiful grounds complete with a golf range and animal kennels we had a lot of fun on. :)
google avatar

Cheryl C.

Yelp
What's not to love? You get very generous scoops on your cone or buy an actual gallon of the finest ice cream this county has to offer. Area Restaurants and other ice cream stands offer Richardson's ice cream and boast about it. They also offer their own organic milk for sale. The place is always mobbed on a sunny warm/hot day so beware. But go inside and sit in the parlor with ac or take the kids behind the stand to the barns to see the cows, sheep and turkeys. We just missed a live birth of a baby cow by only seconds!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Best ice cream on the north shore. Great place to bring the kids farm animals, miniature golf, batting cages.
google avatar

Chuck F.

Yelp
Seriously? There is no other ice cream or fresh dairy. The top of the ice cream food chain bubbas! The hot are too!
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Great ice cream, lots of fun with mini golf, batting cages, and driving range. In the summer it is always mobbed, that is because it is worth it.
google avatar

Kelsea L.

Yelp
OMG THE BEST ICE CREAM EVERRRR!!!! They use the milk from their cows to make the creamiest yummiest ice cream in all kinds of flavors. The lines get insane but they have 10 order counters to help with that. Plenty of parking too. They have mini golf for the kids and plenty of seating areas to enjoy the weather and your sweet treat!

Taylor T.

Yelp
WOW! The employees were all incredibly nice and welcoming, with a happy face and looked like they were all so happy to be working here! The ice cream was delicious! I am very picky with my ice cream but this one was beyond anything I have ever tasted and I loved it! It was also really cute and a great place to go with family or friends!
google avatar

Margi D.

Yelp
I enjoy every ice cream flavor I try at Richardson's. Their employees are all very nice hard working kids. Looking forward to summertime!
google avatar

Charlene E.

Yelp
As an ice cream lover, I take my ice cream very seriously and I don't ask for much. For toppings all I need are Oreos and caramel, two basic things right? Well apparently pineapples and strawberries were offered as toppings as opposed to Oreos, which I find weird, in my opinion. That was annoying considering the fact that I came there from pretty much an hour away and this place was highly recommended. Overcoming the lack of Oreo toppings... Alright so they didn't have Oreos so I had to compromise. I got half cookies and cream ice cream and half cake batter ice cream. Surprisingly, the cookies and cream ice cream was tasty. I don't usually like cookies and cream but that was the best I was gonna get. The cake batter on the other hand, something I typically order, was terrible, just terrible. The best way to describe the flavor was artificial, very artificial. Besides that, it seems to be an attraction spot; they have a golf course and a batting cage, not enough to make me return though.
google avatar

Alyssa T.

Yelp
One of my favorite places on earth. For a North Shore native, Richardsons is nostalgia. You'll find locals here on summer nights waiting in long lines, and eating delicious ice cream. I've lived around the country and still, nothing compares to Richardson's. It's a real working dairy farm and you can walk around and see all the cows (they have babies!) They have mini golf and driving range attached to the farm and it's always buzzing with activity and people on dates. Richardson's is pure wholesome fun. Truly worth a visit!
google avatar

Nick D.

Yelp
At this point Richardson's is the defacto "homemade" ice cream in eastern MA. Almost all local places serve it and it's become the standard. The vanilla is white and tastes like white. Chocolates are good as are most of the special flavors. Prices are average and servings are huge.
google avatar

Enya L.

Yelp
Richardson's farm is such a fun day trip from Boston. The farm gives out HUGE scoops of delicious creamy goodness. (Two scoops in a small!) There are a gazillion flavors and they are nice about samples. Grapenut custard, coconut, and moose tracks are my favorites so far. When it's hot and the outside lines are long, duck inside to wait in the ac. Bring a cooler!! A gallon was around $7.50- you can grab it and go straight up to the counter on the left side.
google avatar

Adam C.

Yelp
Great ice cream and soft serve cones usually a bit of a wait in the hotter months but it's worth it

Sandie S.

Yelp
Phil was a great manager and wonderful role model for all the young workers at Richardson's. It is shameful people are able to get away with smearing innocent people. This hatred needs to stop. We remain grateful for the lessons and work ethic Phil instilled in our child. We are a mexican family and proudly support Phil and Richardson's. Stop this insanity and leave people alone. Our race doesn't matter one iota but bring it up to stop persecuting innocent people. Thank you
google avatar

Marni M.

Yelp
Ever since I started coming here I just keep coming back. The ice cream is delicious and creamy. All flavors I've tried have yet to let me down. Including but not limited to the totally turtle, coffee, strawberry, moose tracks, German cake, Oreo, and so many more. They do a good job trying to limit the amount of people at the desk when they order and requiring people to consume their ice cream further away. It's also a convenient location being near a driving range, batting cages and mini golf.
google avatar

Mack G.

Yelp
A classic staple in the north shore, generations know this place. I stopped by and got a frozen pudding ice cream on one of the hottest days of the year and it was great. Good for a walk around the property and to see the cows living their lives.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
After traveling across all 50 states and tasting ice cream in each state I can officially say- RICHARDSONS IS THE BEST ICE CREAM I have ever tasted across the whole US. 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Gregory M.

Yelp
The ice cream here is top notch. So creamy and velvety, it keeps you wanting more. I often try the seasonal flavors but every flavor is great. Go for a scoop of blueberry pie with a scoop of Toll House cookie on a sugar cone, or try a "black and white" frappe.
google avatar

Cody H.

Yelp
Huge selection! Also huge lines on a nice summer night but don't let that stop you...they handle the crowds well and have a bunch of ice cream scoopers!
google avatar

Martin W.

Yelp
Landmark location in Middleton very generous local family 100 years Wonderful ice cream farm setting miniature golf great place to spend a Sunday or Saturday afternoon
google avatar

Sue H.

Yelp
Today was my birthday and it wasn't exactly going as I expected, so I got the idea to get some ice cream. I decided I wanted to indulge myself and get MY favorite flavor for a change: coffee! I usually give in to other peoples' fruity favorites. Don't get me wrong - they are also delicious - is there a BAD flavor of ice cream? I think not! But as I waited in the long line (that moved quite quickly!), I studied the different flavor offerings and decided Coffee Kahlua Brownie would suit the occasion well. Boy, was I right!! My husband and I agreed that it was the most wonderful ice cream flavor EVER! Like, lick the bowl, wonderful! Thank you for the lovely product and the terrific service as the young man hand-packed that quart for me! I'll never forget it!
google avatar

Elaine C.

Yelp
My favorite ice cream spot hands down! So many flavors to choose from. Their scoops are HUGE! I got a small toll house in a cup and my boyfriend got a small peanut butter Oreo in a cup. Both flavors were delicious, rich, and creamy! I love that this place is opened all year round and always tastes like perfection! I came on a very hot 93 degree Wednesday evening and the line wrapped around the building, past the tent. The line moved faster than I thought.. In less than 10 minutes we were able to get our delicious ice cream! There were so many windows/cashiers opened and kept the line moving fairly quickly. The employees directing customers which window to go to was super helpful to move the line as well! Great work guys! The fact that they have a little store to buy milk and big tubs of ice cream is amazing! I don't live too far from here but getting a tub of ice cream every visit is a must! :) The parking lot is huge!! We were surprised we front a prime parking spot considering how long the line was! SO many spots available, so no need to worry!
google avatar

Yelp
We have been coming here for years and it never disappoints. There is something for everyone. Of course the ice cream, frozen, yogurt, sorbet and frappes are absolutely outstanding. Our favorites are Oreo Cookie, Purple Berry Chip, Mint Patty and Birthday Cake but everything is delicious so you can't make a bad choice there. The frappes are outstanding and everything is very fresh. Take a quick walk around back of the service windows for a farm experience and interaction with donkeys, cows, chickens, roosters and plenty of picnic tables. Walk to the side and you'll find two mini golf courses, a driving range and batting cages. Massive amounts of parking is available and it is such a great place for the young and young at heart. Reasonable pricing. You can even get milk and pre or fresh packed ice cream. Don't miss out on this not so hidden gem!
google avatar

Johnathan M.

Yelp
Ice cream is obviously great but honestly, grab it and go, or go earlier on in the day, or you can sit there at night and enjoy a bunch of kids with there fathers diesel trucks Rev them and speed out of there like a bat out of hell. Place has definitely changed throughout time sadly.
google avatar

Yelp
About 20 years ago, I worked about a mile from Richardson's - and went there constantly - and I finally returned. It was even better than I remembered it! I had the strawberry cheesecake and something else. The strawberry cheesecake was soooo good, and I'm not usually a fan of anything other than chocolate. Rich, flavorful, 100% perfect. The prices at Richardson's are also great, around 1/2 the price of the ice cream parlors near me. Don't get scared off by the lines; they move really fast. Just go!!!
