Richbrau Brewing

Found this gem while looking for a brewery that was open early on a Sunday, and had food. Mostly indoor seating, but it's a lovely space looking into the brewery. Staff was excellent in explaining the brewery history, the beers and the food. We ordered all the apps and enjoyed them all. Then we got a little creative and ordered the chicken strips to tear up and put on their mushroom pizza, as they don't offer additional proteins or toppings. Both were excellent. Only downfall was parking, but we did see something down the alley that may have been for the brewery.

This is a really good brewery. Their selection is slightly limited, but the quality is not. Their “German” style beers are wonderful. They have lPA’s and sours as well. They’re just not my cup of tea 😉

My daughter and I had some time to waste prior to an appointment and we stumbled upon Richbrau Brewing and I am so glad we did! I had the Richbrau Lager and Psychic Horse; both were really good and hit the spot. We didn't grab a bite to eat as we had dinner reservations elsewhere, but from the look and smells of those around us who were eating, I definitely want to come back and try some pizza! The atmosphere is relaxing and laid back. They have a patio area where you can sit and enjoy a cold one or inside their spacious interior. There is a small selection of board games to play and sports on the tv. Not too loud, friendly staff and great beer - who could ask for anything more!

The vibes are great and the space has nice indoor/outdoor functionality. I love going to breweries with my friends, and most have a few non-beer options but there were only two options here and both included things I’m allergic too :( I would’ve given 5 stars if they had even a single wine or canned seltzer options. Thanks for the tiramisu! (Edit: I have a peach allergy and the only seltzer they had was a peach flavor, so I ordered the NA seltzer )

The people are always great. I have had the beers several times but this was the first time I had the pizza. It was really bad. Reply to the owner: I am being honest. I didn't say the beers were great. The beers are average, so a 3, and the food is a 1, so I gave a 2. I don't want people to waste their money on the pizza like I did. If you want better beer and pizza there is Triple Crossing not far away.

Love this place. The beer is both creative and brewed to perfection. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Plenty of games and nice vibe inside. Really can’t recommend enough.

Not a grumpy person in the crowd! How can you be unhappy lined up to get a rich, creamy, perfect sample of tiramisu? Better yet, it’s free! All done to promote community. Others contributed other goodies such as cookies and delicious tres leches cake. Such a fun event at Richbrau Brewery!

Flying out of Richmond in the AM and thought we'd try DT Richmond; well we came across Richbrau and wandered in. What a find. Best beers on our whole trip and when they brew tasty IPAs along with an exceptional Barrel Aged Imperial Stout, (13.5%ABV) this place does it right. Not excited to order pizza but when we saw the honey peperoni, we thought we'd give it a try. It was excellent, crust soso, but the sauce, toppings and the blend with honey, totally hit the spot. Our bar tender was great, very friendly and he filled us in on the local lore as well as where the names of their beers came from, super cool. We had a great visit, keep up the great brewing. If you're in the area, and you like beer, this is the spot.

Stopped by for a recharge, found this brewery with live dj and pretty happening for a Saturdays afternoon. Hubby loved their home brewed beer, he got the Penalties and Interests. I got the San pelligrino. Overall it is a fun spot for a locally brewed beer!

Great space with a nice variety of beers! I liked the friendly service and the clean and cute tap room. It was a really warm January evening and they had the "garage" doors opened. Felt like spring! If I lived here this would be "my spot"!

I love Shockoe Bottom and how rich it is in history. Did you know that the land from 18th st to 25th st is a part of the original settlement of Richmond from 1737 (which Richbrau is on)! I had a great time checking out this charming brewery. ***LOCATION*** Located on 20th street. You can find street parking nearby or take the bus! ***EXPERIENCE*** I came for a Beer and Buses event with RVA Rapid Transit where we took the Pulse to different breweries. This was our second stop. I've read that they're known for their dark beers. I had a sip of my friend's stout (which note: I'm not a big beer drinker) and although it wasn't the choice for me, it was tasty. I loved my King of Strays - Passionfruit Guava. I'm a sucker for passionfruit flavored beers and they did this one right. I love the aesthetic of this brewery. Their logo and art on the glasses are great. They have an outdoor space, a garage that opens to let fresh air in, and an upstairs space. The people who work here were awesome too. ***PRICE*** I spent about $8 on my drink (this includes tax and tip I paid). ***BATHROOM*** There are two all gender bathrooms at this brewery. ***CONCLUSION*** I loved finally checking Richbrau out. Whether it's been on your list for a while or you just added it now, don't wait! Check it out today.

You don't need to be a rich bro(au) to enjoy this! This is one of the better breweries in Richmond as you'll see with the awards they've taken. Beers are in 4, 8, or 16 oz plus you can get growlers if you wanna take them home for enjoyment. Some of the ones I had include: -Psychic Horse IPA (love this one) -Edgar Bourbon Barrel Stout (Tasty but strong, beware!) As you'll see I enjoyed these very much. The handcrafted brews have the balance down on hops and maltiness with smooth carbonation. They serve food here too if you're hungry and they have outdoor seating. Also a couple TVs and board games inside for entertainment. All the necessities for a brewery and then some. Nice staff and interior, it's a brew lovers heaven!

I have visited a LOT of breweries in the area and I had never heard of this one. I am not sure how. I heard about it when their beers won 3 awards recently including a lager. So, I decided I wanted to try it!! This brewery is located downtown in a very busy area. Parking is very tough, IMO. We finally found a spot a few blocks away. I think there is also paid parking nearby I think but I am not overly familiar with that area. I got the pilsner and my wife got the lager that won a medal. Both were very good beers. They have some outdoor seating but most of it is indoors. It is a very nice place and the staff were friendly as well. Definitely a place to go and have a beer with some friends!!

Very cool brewery with old bones and solid brews. Nice selection of styles, very friendly staff. Will definitely recommend and return next visit to RVA.

The breakfast sandwiches are so delightful and satisfying. The service is quick and easy, very little waiting. The pricing I found sometime a bit higher than NYC. The coffee was dreamy though. The outdoor dining area was packed so getting there early helps.

Some street parking and there's a small outdoor seating area and a somewhat decent sized indoor seating. They have some board games which is cool. They don't do flights but do 6 oz pours. Spent about ~$30 for 5 beers. They do have food here but I didn't order any. Seems like outdoor is dog friendly. Peach 4th Street - light Peach smell and flavoring. Surprisingly not as sour as anticipated and very pleasant. Raspberry Carousel - Slightly tarter than the Peach 4th Street but still a good flavor from the raspberry in the smell and taste. Fairly light and easy to drink. Allan - Has a really strong dark roast coffee smell and a great coffee flavor as well. A really well made Stout that is not super heavy and great flavor. Richbrau Lager - pretty good standard Lager and easy to drink. Definitely light but still a good flavor to it. Dreaming Dreams - You definitely get that richness from the Whiskey barrel through the smell. Really rich in flavor as well but really good. You have to kind of sip this slowly but the 6 oz pour was perfect. Friendly staff and chill vibe!

Friendly, personable staff. Delicious beer and tasty food! Came out here from Williamsburg for the day and will definitely be coming back.

Small beet selection. The Richbrau beer is good as it always has been. Food is mostly non-existant. There is pizza.

You must come here. $10 pizzas, great beer, and excellent staff. I've never once had a bad experience here and they won't even judge when you order $90 worth of Popeyes to be delivered. Good people and good beer.

I visited Richmond 2 weeks ago, and dropped into Richbrau for a quick visit, only to try their pink guava sour, "King of Strays" The brewery was so cute, they were very safe with distancing and masks, and very friendly! The bartender talked to me about other fruited sours in their King Of Strays series. All sounds delicious! I loved this so much I bought a 4pk to-go. I'd love to come back and try more next time! Also I love how they have board games to play.. makes a fun time when we're allowed to do stuff like this post-Covid. Thanks!!

Visited Richmond for the weekend and spent an evening at Richbrau. Employees were very friendly and helpful with beer selection. Nice variety of beers with something for everyone. The whole group enjoyed the pizza. We will be back next time we visit!

This is what I call a solid brewery. Spacious, brew tanks in plain sight, board games to play, can bring outside food, and decent beers on tap. The bathrooms are single use, large and clean. WIsh they had the "occupied" sign when the door is locked. They play good music. Smaller but quality selection of beer. They have an upper section, loft design. They play old time black and white movies in the corner. Which adds a hipster vibe.

Awesome staff, better beer! This is a great location to grab one of their award winning brews, with the ambiance of downtown.

I love the inside of this place. I love a brewery that houses where they brew their beers and the bar in the same area. The beers here were really good. The food here was great but a bit $$ for what you get. The staff here was so nice and attentive.

Off to a good start! Richbrau reopened to the public on July 4 -- fitting for such a historic brewery. Based on my age and newness to RVA, I wasn't around for its last iteration, so I can't compare, but this space is great. It has an open concept so you can see into the brewing area. The taproom has a line of seating with purse hooks facing the brewery plus several tables. There's also a line for to-go orders, which is nice and convenient. They don't offer flights but they do allow tastes in addition to 6 and 12 ounce pours. I opted for two 6-ounce pours for my first visit -- the mango sour and the strawberry guava sour. Both were delicious! I think I liked the mango more because it reminded me of a beermosa. They also had another sour (with lactose), a couple stouts, and some hoppy beers on tap for their grand opening. I'm definitely impressed and look forward to future visits.

I cannot believe that Richbrau has been open since July and there are so few reviews! First, I must comment on the first reviewers statement that she wasn't around for the original Richbrau... Well, I was. This Richbrau has almost NOTHING in common with the original other than they both brew really good beer! The original was spacious and had delicious food. The new incarnation is rather small, on a side street, and the only food has to be delivered via ChopChop. Also, the original had pool tables where the new space has the usual corner with games that can be played at tables. In the area where you que up for beer (if there is a line) there is a touch screen device that can help you make your decisions by asking questions like "are you new to craft beer?" and makes appropriate suggestions. Kinda cool! Though there is little similarity to the "original" I really liked the beers and service at this new incarnation of Richbrau. They do all styles of beer well. We tried the stout, IPA, and a sour. Something for all beer lovers.

Stopped by for a cold one after lunch during a recent visit to downtown Richmond. Very nice atmosphere that appears to be very new. Beer selection was a little too fruity for us which is typical around this area. We settled on the lager which was pretty tasty. Service was very good and the employees were very friendly. Overall we enjoyed our short visit here.

Love the beer, atmosphere and service. Great place and lots of fun. If in Richmond you owe it to yourself to stop and had a pint.

Best brewery in Shockoe bottom!! Their sours are amazing. Can't remember exact name but the one with strawberry and blueberry in it!! Pale ales are great too, need to try their stouts next!! Also try the fried mac and cheese balls omg they're so good!!!! Need to try ravioli next. Goes great with beer and nice little snack. Love the ambiance here too. So dog friendly and I love it when it's warm enough for them to leave the garage open!!

Welcome back Richbrau! I was a bit too young to remember the first iteration from a consumption standpoint but enjoy its most recent coming. The space I dig as it's clean, spacious (but not overly) and comfortable nestled in the downtown strip. Enjoy beers indoors or out. Hold a conversation with friends, catch a game on the two large TVs or observe the brew deck. The staff is very friendly, approachable and helpful in talking about the styles pouring. Not pretentious at all like another brewery or two I won't name around town. The beers are strong. Strong in the sense that they are all consistently good. The hoppy beers are solid, the stouts are solid, the berliners are solid. See what I'm getting at? I always respect a brewery with consistency in quality across their styles. Now could they improve, absolutely. Everyone can always get better, but they are on the right track. If I could make some suggestions it would be to continue to offer even more styles. I'd love to see a pilsner or helles (or both) lager on tap. As clean as some of their hoppy beers are like Psychic Horse I have no doubt that they could make a nice clean, crisp lager to offer and not stop there. As far has the IPA/DIPA category goes always have a plethora of these. I dig the hazy new England's your making now, but don't lose sight of the more traditional bitter west coast style. Offer juice and hop bombs! The owners/brewers are Buffalonians and I love that as I've got ties to Buffalo and western NY and my better half and I are always wearing our Bills gear when stopping in. To sum up, this is a good brewery run by what appear to be some solid folks. Keep up the good work.

This brewery is smaller but don't let that deter you because they are serving up some great beer. Plus, the taproom is cute and the service was friendly so that helps too. We stopped in for two rounds and tried the festbier, psychic horse, key lime trolley and devil's tree. Depending on the beer you can choose a 6oz, 8oz or 12oz pour. The personal favs were the festbier and devil's tree. If you are in the area, Richbrau is definitely worth checking out.

Love love love! We stop in here sometimes because it's close to my boyfriend's apartment. The beers are solid and there's usually always one sour option. They newly have pizza available sometimes and lots of games to play. The staff is so sweet.

Great environment, two level area to socialize. Laid back staff and games to play! The beer is pretty good too - I recommend the Witbier.

We stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon and it was decently busy but there was still seating open upstairs and some outside seating. The owners are very very friendly and so are the rest of the staff. Everyone's more than happy to talk about the different kinds of beers or recommend something to you. Most importantly, all of the beers that we we tried were delicious including some sours, lager, Pilsner, and some IPAs. The one thing I would love to see would be the option to order a flight! You could order smaller 6 oz pours of multiple beers but a flight is an experience :)

Nothing against this place, just not my style beer. Lots of sours and even their own lager is pretty sour. Atmosphere is chill and nice, service is great, everyone is super nice. Im just not a fan of the beer but if you are into different fruity sours then this is the place for you!

The 13 O'Clock stout was excellent, as were the IPAs I tried. Very friendly bartenders. I didn't try the pizza, but the spanakopita and hot honey goat cheese balls were both nice appetizers and fairly priced for the quantity. Since I was traveling alone, I just grabbed a seat at the side counter (I mean the bar-like seating facing the tanks, not the actual bar) and hung out. It's down the street a ways from Main Street Station but the tracks pass right by behind the brewery, so you might hear a freight train if that's your thing.

Great beers! Friendly staff! My husband and I enjoyed sitting outside with our beers. We would definitely recommend!

Hands down, in my top 5 for Richmond breweries. You can't beat the location and the beer is so good. The owners did such a nice job renovating what used to be an auto repair garage into a trendy and warm/inviting meeting spot. I have a running club that meets here weekly and the owners have been so accommodating and nice. I can't say enough good things about this place!

Have not had the food yet, but the beer choices are awesome! Great spot in the Bottom and super friendly staff. New favorite place to go !

The psychic horse IPA is the best beer I've had in a long time! The space is cozy and has a cool atmosphere. The staff is great and very accommodating. The fried goat cheese balls are sooooo good. The people next to us got pizza and they said it was just okay, probably frozen pizza. Which isn't a bad thing but just wanted to note that! Love this place and will definitely be back.

Nice place in Shockoe that specializes in rich, dark beers with interesting flavors. You can get half-pours (7 oz) for about $7 and full-pours (14 oz) for about $10. If you like dark beers you'll love this place. Good atmosphere and street parking.

I have been to Richmond a few times hitting up a few breweries and I would definitely come back here. I came with a few friends and we had a great time. The vibes are definitely there too and the staff is really polite - and there was a super cute guy there too, haha. I had the Psychic Horse, which I would get again, and I had the Key Lime Trolley, both were great veers. My friend even ordered a few cans of the Psychic Horse to bring home. Great place, would come back.

My wife and I wanted to try a new brewery in Richmond so I suggested coming here as I had heard good things. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but such as it is with many places downtown. We arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon and we noticed there were a few tables set up outside that were full. Upon walking in you notice just how big the place is but at the same time quaint and welcoming. We walked to the bar and I ordered 3 of their IPAs. Note they don't have flights but you can order 6 ounce pours which I what we did. The DDH and the other two juicy IPAs were delicious so I had to go back and try the stouts and sours. The staff is extremely friendly. They go out of their way to ask how you liked the beers and offer suggestions. Their sours were really good and so were the stouts although I would say I enjoyed the IPAs and sours more. There is ample seating inside downstairs and upstairs. You can bring your own food in too as it looked like a family was having a small party. They have 4-packs for sale and you can get a crowler of any beer you want to take home. We would definitely come back.

This Brewery has an awesome vibe and they keep the place super clean. I'm a huge fan of hazy IPAs and this place might have the best one that's ever touched my lips. Their Troubled Souls DIPA has lactose, making it super smooth from start to finish. Keep it up guys!

Been here twice during my time in Richmond and I absolutely love this place! Bottom line, friendly staff, positive, well thought out environment, great beer! In a little more detail... think I had all of their beers the first time... right now they're mainly sours, a few IPAs, a pale and a stout and porter or two. All of the beer is delicious and prices aren't bad. Negatives, (but not enough to drop them down a star by any means) no flights or food besides the beer nuts. No big deal, but definitely hoping for some more snacking options soon! Anyway great stuff, good people, nice building!

They don't enforce their mask rules, guy waking around three times while I was there that wasn't wearing his mask who walked to the bathroom, the stairs and right by customers enjoying their tasty beverages. When I said something to the customer one of the employees got in my face and said it was his job to enforce the masks....which he obviously didn't. They have lost my steady Friday night business along with the people I bring in during the week and weekends. Too bad I was going to buy a bunch of four packs for friends and now they lost all my business. Wear your mask!

The PA Downtown Center contacted Richbrau one week before an event that would have more than 30 people attend. Richbrau was more than willing to work with us. Communication was excellent and consistent. Richbrau was willing to work with our requests and clearly communicated what they would be able to do for us. They let use their mezzanine that overlooked the main floor and it was a perfect size for our group. The building has been excellently taken care of and Richbrau has created a great atmosphere where you are able to view their brewing process. The appetizers were great and the pizza was fantastic. They were quick with their preparation and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the evening. The beer is fantastic. Our group sampled the menu thoroughly and everyone enjoyed what they had. I was able to try two of their fruit beers and one stout and they all tasted fantastic and were true to their descriptions.

This place has some of the most creative beers and brews in all of Richmond. Honestly can not find a brewery with more unique tastes than Richbrau. Must stop and enjoy if your traveling through town or a local.

Absolutely LOVE the atmosphere at Richbrau. Clean, comfortable, tasty and a great place to gather with friends. Service was above bar!

So impressive! You can tell these guys, and gals poured their heart and soul into this venture. It shines with the service and atmosphere and it shines with the beer. I wish them all the best and I can't wait to get back!

I stopped in on a weekday evening. There were only a few others there but it was a nice welcoming vibe. I had the two IPAs on the board and thought they were both really good. I sampled a couple of the sours and thought they were some of the best I've had. The bartender was friendly and helpful as well. I'd definitely go back.
