How to Spend a Big Fat Weekend in Prince Edward Island in Canada | Bon Appétit

"I could write a 1,000-word essay about how much I love the art atRick’s. And by art I mean photos of Rick taking his kids to prom. Every wall seems to be filled with a different family memory, from boat trips to camel rides. On the food front, if you’re looking for damn-perfect fish and chips, this is where you should go. The only decision you need to make is between haddock or cod (the cod is a little more tender and flaky). What comes out is a long, crackly-crunchy piece of fish over fries. You aren’t looking out over some scenic bay or beach, like other PEI restaurants, but you do get a view of Rick and his family, which is arguably better." - ByRachel Karten

Between four of us we had cod cakes, jumbo shrimp, seafood chowder, poutine and salad. And I can’t leave out, amazing blueberry pie (it was a little more like a crisp than a pie, but it was wonderful). All the food was very well prepared and seasoned. My mate had seafood chowder at Fin the next day and said the one here at Rick’s was much better. We even had a nice little chin waggle with the chef/owner, en francais, which was a treat. Worth the trip.

Stopped in after a hike at Greenwich and had lunch of Fish and Chips, cod cakes and hand made onion rings. Food was very good, great size portions, very fresh and served piping hot. The service was great (order at the counter and they bring it out, very informal but staff is very attentive). Got to meet the owner, super nice guy who is carrying on the tradition of Ricks and bringing his years of culinary excellence. Tell everyone to stop in!! Worth the trip to beautiful St. Peters!

This spot has new owners and it shows! What a cute and quaint spot - I had the lobster roll which was the best I had ever had. Hubble had the fish and chips - maritime fresh and it shows. Hand cut PEI fries and generous portions. I will be back to try the chowder, fish and scallops. 5 stars for me!

Wow, what a find!  When we stepped into this  little fish and chips spot, we expected some good fish and chips, but not the level of sophistication in the rest of what these folks have to offer.  Nacim, the current owner and chef, has taken the place far beyond just a fish and chips joint.  We happened in on Father’s Day and ordered gravlox, one of the daily specials.  It was exquisite!  The fish had been cured with a basting of brandy, and was topped with Nacim’s house made mustard seed caviar, surprisingly mild and a perfect topping for the fish.  The final flavor compliment was a garnish of slivered cabbage, fresh tarragon, and capers.  The paring of flavors was perfect.  The seafood chowder, was rich in flavor, in a light cream sauce.  Of course the fish and chips, and salad were equally delicious, but another surprise was waiting at the end, a strawberry, rhubarb cheesecake, on an almond flour crust.  The service was excellent, welcoming and warm, and there was plenty of outside seating, making for a very pleasant environment.  Rick’s was much more than we expected, and definitely worth a visit.

We stopped in after our day at MYSA Spa. It was father's day so I had the steak a frites special.. the the peppercorn gravy was off the chart. Service was excellent. Highly recommend. The wife had the onion rings. Scrumptious

Amazing service and food!! The young waitress was so kind and served us with the biggest smile :) I got the fish and chips which was absolutely delicious - you can definitely tell the fish was super fresh. The chef himself brought out our dessert for us and he was also very friendly!

Google
Seafood lovers need to eat here! The two piece cod fish and chips was delicious as were the hand cut fries. The lobster rolls are made the way lobster rolls are supposed to be made with a fresh bun and generous amounts of lobster. The focus on freshness and quality is obvious. The new owners are clearly kicking things up a notch!

I used to be a longtime fan of Rick's fish and chips, I came as a kid for the good food and the good homestyle restaurant experience, always looking forwards to it when coming to the island, unfortunately this experience would not last as everything changed when the restaurant was sold and the menu changed, I tried going in this time thinking positively, although my favorite meal was long gone I tried something new and simple, I was utterly disappointed with the meal, it was made to look like a fancy high end grill cheese sandwich, and yet it tasted like pure butter. The charm of Rick's was the homestyle experience, not the "upper class" food place which doesn't even taste good. I'll miss the old Rick's fish and chips, but I don't think I can come back again under new management.

Rick C.

Yelp
The food and service were excellent! This is the second season under new ownership and it's clear that they take quality and freshness seriously. I had the two piece cod fish and chips and my partner had the lobster roll. The cod was white and flaky and cooked to perfection in a delicious batter and was served with delicious hame cut fries and tasty and colourful homemade coleslaw. The lobster roll was big and had generous amounts of lobster filling. It was clear that the food was prepared with thoughtfulness and care. This is place is well worth visiting and we are looking forward to trying the rest of the menu.

Yelp
So disappointing! This place used to be a tradition for us whenever we'd travel to PEI. You'd usually have to wait in line for a while just to order, usually fight for a table, but boy it was always worth the effort! Today, I'm now sitting here in this parking lot angrily stewing over the fact that I paid WAY too much money for a few overcooked clams (think little rubbery pellets that vaguely resembled clams), the fries were overcooked, the fish was over battered and greasy, the onion rings were so greasy they made me nauseous...even the "salad" (or whatever that was in the side cup) was uniquely terrible. I don't usually give bad reviews, but when you spend $75 on these very basic things, you expect them to be done well! I will say the ordering and seating situations made the whole experience a lot better from past experiences...and it's a beautiful spot. I just wish the food was like it always used to be...

Yelp
I stopped in at Rick's Fish & Chips on the way to Basin Head beach and I'm glad I did. The fish was fresh and delicious and the fries were fantastic. The cod was nice and flaky and tender. It was battered just right. The service was great and it was nice to sit outside on a beautiful day.

Yelp
Yes, 3 stars and it should be 2 stars. The reason I give higher rating because there are not many good restaurants. Or I must say there are not many restaurants in general in Eastern part of PEI. The sea food is fresh for sure. I would order the shrimp, it is very good. Fish and chips were good and above average but not something great. Scallops gave us upset stomach for days. If you are not used to sea food, you may want to skip the scallops. The upset stomach is the main reason for being average place. Yes, I would go back but I will be careful on what to order.

Yelp
Worst lobster roll I've ever had. Ground up lobster(literally) with a few chunks thrown in that was unrecognizable in taste to the lobster rolls I've had all over Maine that I had during the 12 years I worked there. The fish fry was great moist and flavorful but I would stay away from the lobster. The service was fabulous as well as the pie a la mode of blueberry ice cream and pie

Yelp
[ location ] - Great location and near our bike rental shop (St. Peters Bay Craft & Giftware): super close to either biking the Confederation Trail or highway 313 to the national park at Greenwich, PEI. Ideal place to stop after your ride if you're too tired to get back into the car as the restaurant is a stone's throw away from the bike shop. [ food ] - I guess the fish and chips were a little greasy, but what do you expect? You're not here to be healthy. Could I have been happy if it was less greasy? Sure. Was it disgusting? No, it was still quite yummy after a huge bike ride. I thought it was fine. Super plain though, so I loaded it up with malt vinegar and salt/pepper. - Cajun mussels were super salty...I said this to the waitress and she said that's just how the seasoning tastes. So to each their own. Glad we only got a side order, wouldn't order again. - Garlic butter steamed mussels were fine. Not the best mussels we've had in PEI, but they were yummy and we got a big bowl for the price. - Seafood chowder was fine. Definitely caught some chunks of clam in there, not sure what else there was besides potato though. [ service ] - Waitresses were busy but got the job done and even stopped in a few times to ask how the food was. [ overall ] - Perfectly fine as a place to stop in for some good greasy fish and chips after a long bike ride. Not sure that I'd go out of my way to come here, but if you're in the area, you might as well!

Yelp
Really really tasty!!!! We did take out and even that was beyond good. The fish was spectacular; light, crispy, fluffy on the inside! The Cajun clams were spectacular but my favourite things were the fries and the scallops. Overall great place to get high quality seafood and delicious fries!
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
They gang mostly ordered Fish & Chips which tasted great. But I loved the appetizer of Cajun Mussels. Recommended by Uncle Walt. So plump and popped full of flavour in our mouths. Get a couple of plates as you will not want to share. I really like my Curry Seafood Chowder but could barely taste the curry which was fine as I was dying for a simple chowder anyways. Oh, if you get a table outside watch out for the mosquitoes and bees as they seem to like anything liking Rick's good too!
google avatar

Shari D.

Yelp
Disappointed with food. The chowder was advertised as full of seafood and potatoes but it was pretty hard to find the seafood. I thought it was a tasty cream of potato soup. The fish and chips were very greasy. The fries limp. The place itself was cute but I would not return. The service was okay but drinks weren't delivered until after the meals.

Yelp
Service was good, friendly and prompt. Decent selection of local beers. My husband had the famous fish and chips, light crispy batter, large fillet of fish very generous portions. The hand cut fries were nothing to write home about especially if you like yours crispy. I had the vegetarian burger which was juicy and delightful. Better than most vegetarian restaurants I've been to anywhere. Overall a 4/5 because we craved some crispy fries and heard they had the best but guess not exactly what we had hoped. We would probably go back if ever around again.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Cajun mussels have hardly any flavor, taste of deep fryer. French fries are limp and very browned yet undercooked on inside. Butter with steamed muscles watered down. Seafood chowder was okay.
google avatar

Sherry D.

Yelp
Ordered the creole mussels and they were so salty to be awful. We order the marinated mussels and they ran out. The seafood chowder was ok. Unfortunately there are no other restaurants nearby so they have a captive audience Fetrow visiting the beaches and national park.
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
A major disappointment. My order came after almost an hour waiting. The whole clams were mostly batter and the portion was small. You could barely taste the clams. The fries were somewhat soggy. The service was slow and inattentive. Do yourself a favour... blink and miss this place.
google avatar

Yelp
We almost didn't go to Rick's due to the reviews on Yelp, but we're glad we did! We went to Rick's on a local recommendation after a day of exploring the island. We got there on the late side, but the staff was great and the food was better. We had an order of marinated mussels, an order of oysters and a fish and chips. The fish and chips were good enough to merit a second order, which the staff served with no complaint even though it was closing time. We topped it off with a pecan flan and couldn't have been happier. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Cory R.

Yelp
Judging by the other reviews, I had a fluke experience at Rick's ... nonetheless MY experience was pretty good. The staff were friendly enough, and the prices were a bit high, but I thought worth it. The fish n chips was some of the best I've ever had. I would highly recommend this place if you're on PEI.!

Shannon B.

Yelp
I was surprised at the poor reviews on here so I thought I better write about our experience. We stopped in at Rick's today and the place was packed. The waitress pushed a couple tables together on the patio as we are a family of 5. Waitress was very friendly even though she was practically run off her feet with all the customers. Everything we had was DELICIOUS! Seafood chowder, Cajun mussels, haddock and chips. 2 kids shared a small pizza and devoured every bite (and they are particular about their pizza), youngest had chicken nuggets and fries. I would definitely eat here again and recommend others to go.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Best seafood chowder on the island hands down! And it's not just me they have the awards to prove it. As you drive up it looks small and underwhelming but don't let that fool you. The food and service is great! I ordered the cod fish and chips and the chowder. Can't go wrong! If I have one negative it's that the parking and indoor seating is limited. Off hours are the best times to go.

Michelle H.

Yelp
Get the fried mussels. The fish and chips are average but we got the spicy fried mussels, too, and they were phenomenal. Our favorite mussels on the island (and we got some at almost everywhere we went on the island). We'd go back if we landed in the area again and get a giant order of fried to enjoy!

Yelp
We were very disappointed in everything about this place. It was very busy when we arrived, so we expected a wait. I was told they have gluten free buns so I ordered a cheeseburger and salad. We waited 45 minutes and our waitress never stopped by to let us know it would be out soon or replenish our water. Several tables came in after us and received their meals within 20 minutes. So I asked our waitress if we were getting our order and she said hamburgers take longer, lol. I am sure they don't take 45 minutes to cook. Sooooo when my meal does come out it has no bun and fries, wtf. They tell me they didn't have any buns so they just put everything on it and brought that out. They did offer to get me a salad but by then I no longer wanted to eat. Also not one person apologized for any of the inconvenience. I will definitely not be going back or tell anyone to eat there.

Randy E.

Yelp
The service was slow but just for our table. The other waitresses were quick but ours seemed to take her time, never refilled our drinks. I got the fish and chips - the fries were fresh cut and good, but the fish was heavily breaded and extremely oily. Not good at all. I asked for gravy which never came and I ended up having to ask a different waitress for it. It came when I was almost done eating yet I was still charged $3 for some canned chicken gravy. Don't recommend this place.

Rebecca P.

Yelp
Our experience was just ok. The fish and chips were overdone, flavorless and greasy. I had a chicken burger which was tasty but again, overdone and greasy fries. The house salad was alright, they didn't give us enough dressing. Curry chowder was tasty. The steamed mussels were tender but the butter sauce didn't taste much like garlic like the menu said. Staff was very friendly. The wait was moderate, about 35 minutes for our food. Bathrooms were clean.

Yelp
Good, honest, straightforward, fish and chips , value for money. Not a salubrious location but well worth the visit. Both cod and haddock excellent choices. Friendly and helpful staff.

Liam T.

Yelp
Pretty good place to eat at if you're in the area. Came with a couple other people and we all enjoyed our fish and chips. Clam strips were apparently good (I didn't have them though). It's a very small place, but provides a cozy feel. However, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because Rick's was lacking a fan or any way of making the place cooler on a hot summer day. If you come on a hot day be aware that it will indeed get HOT inside. Overall, it's still great and absolutely a must try!

Karen C.

Yelp
The meal can only be described as gross. I had fish and chips and the bottom of the basket was pooled with grease. I picked up a fry and squeezed and the oil oozed on my fingers. The cook obvious did not care about quality and was only concerned with getting the food out fast. My meal went from the fryer to my plate without any drain time. The waitress was great and offered to replace the fries. The fish was just as bad and I returned the whole meal. My partner had the bar clams and fries. The clam batter was cornmeal based. It was so hard the delicate clam was lost. He ate most of his fries (gross but he just wanted to eat and leave) and felt sick for the rest of the day.
google avatar

Carrie C.

Yelp
Wow. Here's a review that's a little happier than the other one posted here. I've been to Rick's about a dozen times, and his food is delicious, fresh and a huge hit with the locals and tourists alike. The restaurant is always packed for a reason. Try Rick's cajun mussels. You can't beat the hand-cut fries, and the fish and chip platter is out of this world. The prices are really reasonable, and it's a great place for families.
google avatar

Faith H.

Yelp
Went with my family and it was not overly busy and our food took over an hour and when we asked the waitress why it was taking so long she began by saying that the item I had had ordered a seafood pizza took a long time. As she continued to talk it came to light that she had forgotten to put our order in but she realized her mistake and put our order in 10 minutes ago( 45 minutes after we actually ordered) and put it in, she offered us some more onion rings and left the table. Not offering to bump up our order so it would go faster. That's being said the food was fairly good, not outstanding but good.
google avatar

H K.

Yelp
It was okay. They had had a busy day. Fish was good. Fries looked like the oil has not been hot enough. Service was very good.
google avatar

Richard C.

Yelp
Pretty good. The fish was a bit greasy and the fries not overly hot but overall a pretty good take out restaurant. The service was ok.
google avatar

Jeremy P.

Yelp
We had some fried haddock, which was good; however, we couldn't help but wonder why a place with fresh seafood like this serves haddock with little plastic containers of brand name tartar sauce like a fast food joint. At least buy in bulk and serve in your own plastic cups to give the appearance of homemade. Maybe true seafood eaters don't use tartar sauce. The fries were dark, greasy. Kids got a cheeseburger and a hot dog. Neither was bad, neither was great. A lemonade in a bottle, Minute Maid, was $3, which seemed a bit much. Our waitress was not overly friendly, nor did others seem to be. We would not likely return.
google avatar

Teneile W.

Yelp
Straightforward, honest food. There is no fluff at Rick's just flavour. The best meals are often the simplest. All that fancy stuff is an unnecessary expense.
google avatar

Ayn E.

Yelp
Food is decent but found service to be insultingly bad. As a family of four we were seated around two sides of a table for two and the table we were promised was given away twice. They knew we were unhappy and uncomfortable but not one apology which would have gone a long way. Just a lot of avoiding the line of vision. Not a lot of options in this area, which may explain the low service quality threshold, but would give it a pass and try elsewhere. Or call in an order for take out. Kind of wrecked our last night on the island.

Tracy R.

Yelp
Our meals today were very disappointing. It was very busy so we did not expect our meal very quickly, however after 38 minutes and we had not seen our server we waved her over to ask how much longer it would be and were told burgers take a long time. I don't think 45 minutes. Our waters were not refilled. Other tables that came in after us were served before us. I ordered whole clams and there was so much batter I couldn't even taste the calm. Not a good experience for sure.

Dustin O.

Yelp
Ordered whole clams and chips. Very small portion and clam were small sandy and way too much batter. Have had fish here before and was good but very un impressed with clams.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
The curried chowder was excellent. The lemongrass came through with a clean crisp flavor. The poutine was very good. However, the signature dish, fried whole clams, was not. The breading was heavy and oilly. The clams lacked any flavor and their necks were as tough as rubber bands.
google avatar

Yelp
After a nice bike ride on the Confederation Trail - looked pretty hard for a place to eat. This place was perfect. Wow - the deck was windy tho. Super busy, even saw the local policeman coming out the door. There were number of items from the menu already unavailable. Kids ordered fish & chips and grown ups ordered the seafood special pizza. Pizza had 45 min wait. So we all shared the fish & chips first. Greasy - agreed but pretty yummy. So yummy we ordered an extra fish while we waited for the pizza. Pizza comes - pretty awesome. I'm from the town of clam pizza and us folks get white clam - no mozz - thin crusty garlic olive oil...sprinkle with parm. That's just standard in N' Haven. But this is fluffy doughy pizza and we allowed mozz but stayed white sauce. Yum. There's a little Cajun spice sprinkle on top. Interesting touch. Never thought of that. Large was big enough for the two grown ups and a slice for each of the three kiddos and them couple slices to take in doggy box for later. The final bill was surprisingly reasonable for fam of five (~$50) considering we were stuffed. Already back in US but wanted to remind myself for a future trip - definitely coming back to this place.

Paul C.

Yelp
Got a recommendation from a local and went to rick's after a fantastic bike ride. It was crowded so had to wait a bit but I knew it was a good sign when many of the patrons were local folks. Clam strips were EXCELLENT...fresh and flavorful. Fish and chips were very good with light beer batter and nice fleshy haddock along with fresh cut fries which we got with the gravy. The only minor negative on the food was that the fish were a tad greasy so if it had been fried in fresh oil, it would've been five stars. Price are quite reasonable considering the quality of the food. Now the service.....was far below average. However, I am all about the food so the four star rating. If you are in PEI and want to try the best the island has to offer rick's is a fine option.
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
The food there is really good, sure it would take a while sometime; but the wait is worth it. I should defiantly try the fish and chips. This was also the place where I learned the joy of sweet and sour sauce (which is now my top fave dipping sauce.)

Niki M.

Yelp
Wow! Food and service were fantastic. Can't beat their fish and chips and lobster roll. We ate on the deck and listened to some nice tunes as the sun started to set over the Bay. We will continue to make our annual trip to Rick's each summer.

William A.

Yelp
Let's be clear, this is a tourist restaurant. They pushed the Cajun mussels, which were deep-fried along with french fries. Ok but a lot of fried food. Steamed would have been better. They brag that their french fries are hand cut, but they're really nothing special. Fish and chips were good. The restaurant was set overlooking a road, but still pleasant.

Patti C.

Yelp
Some of the best fried seafood anywhere. Fish and chips, scallop burger, Cajun mussels all delicious, prompt friendly service, authentic location.

Greg P.

Yelp
My dinner of fish and chips was good. My wife's mussels were not. The view from the deck was beautiful though watching the sunset. Service was a tad slow and it was a little pricey I would have liked to go three but they just didn't make it so the best I could do would be a 2 1/2. They are the only thing in town that is opened on Tuesdays that is in walking distance of town center.

Cliff H.

Yelp
Our group stopped in after a long day of biking the trail. We were hungry and ordered about everything on the menu. It was so windy outside so we sat indoors and it was HOT. Service was ok. Here is the run down on the food: lobster roll just ok. I've had lots better on PEI. Small lobster meat on an over toasted bun. Scallops were very good but would have been amazing if coated with Rick's Mix (Cajun). I cannot believe they don't have their own tarter sauce! They give you a single serving of Kraft????? That is soooo easy to come up with a killer sauce (mayo, pickle relish, lemon and Cajun). Pizza pretty good, Caesar salad ok, Greek salad good. The 2 best things were the chowder which had a hint of curry but not enough fish, and the Cajun mussels. You've got to try the mussels!
