After spending over five years in Memphis where I regularly ate some of the best BBQ in the country, I feel that I have developed a refined palate for great BBQ. Originally hailing from the TRI region, I had never eaten at Ridgewood prior to this week. The locals speak very highly of this place, so I decided to give it a try.
On both visits, the service was excellent all around and my meal arrived almost immediately. Although tasty, the BBQ sauce was a bit on the sweet side for my taste, and the pork lacked the nuanced, smoky flavor that I grew to love in MEM. The worst part of the meal was the "hand cut fries" which were very bland, having nearly no flavor at all.
You cannot order ribs or brisket here, as they are absent from the menu. That alone takes away one star. I would argue that you cannot have a "world class" BBQ establishment without having a full/half rack of ribs as an option on the menu. Also, instead of pulled pork, they offer thin-sliced pork and beef, which is then fried, for some strange reason, prior to being served.
Ridgewood does have a charming location in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, but I would rate it as average BBQ resto. No more. No less.
