Living in this part of the country we are not at a loss for places to buy fresh and local produce. Whether it be at the farmers markets that are slowly starting to now open with the changing of the season, or the local small market down the street, it is difficult to find a place that doesn't carry local.
With my mind set on purchasing some veggie goodness and having recently learned that Rinella Produce was open to the public, I made my way down to see what they had. Rinella is known mostly for providing products at low prices to restaurants, grocery stores, wholesalers, schools and retirement homes so most of what comes out of there is in bulk quantities. I wasn't exactly sure how it worked being an individual and only needing a few things, but those fears (?) were quickly eased.
First off it was difficult finding out where to enter. After walking completely around the building, I walked in the back and spoke to someone who worked there. He set me up with another guy who took me around the warehouse showing me what they had. I felt bad because I only went in to get a few things. After my tour I picked out the items that I wanted (celery, lettuce, tomatoes and asparagus) and I was brought out to the back to pay. My grand total was under $6. Not too shabby.
It is an interesting way to shop. You are basically walking into their big refrigerators and picking out what you want. Aside from produce, they also offer cheese, large bags of potatoes and eggs amongst other things.
Rinella is a place you might think about if you are looking for another way to buy your produce.
