The Best Restaurants and Bars in Sunriver, Oregon | Eater Portland

"The newest restaurant to occupy this peaceful spot overlooking the Sunriver marina, Rio Sol serves a menu of of Latin American, Mexican, and Peruvian food. Diners can start with unique appetizers like cornmeal-crusted fried avocados with cilantro lime crema, pickled cabbage, and onions, or opt for avocado as one of the taco fillings. Other taco options include smoked spicy wild mushrooms or roasted cauliflower. Peruvian ceviche has stuck around from the previous occupant, but the menu has otherwise been completely redone." - Barb Gonzalez

New favorite spot! The food was amazing and fairly priced, comes with a great view & great service! They offer a happy hour menu every day they are open from 3 to 5, weekends included which is hard to find. Best mole enchiladas I've ever tried, the mole sauce was to die for. I'm a huge ceviche lover and would give it a solid 10/10.

Our group recently decided to try out Rio Sol, the new restaurant in Sunriver that replaced Hola's, a place we used to frequent. The first thing that caught our attention was the updated and inviting interior. We were seated at a nice table by the window with a view of the River. Our friendly server; Fernando promptly took our drink orders, although there was a noticeable delay before our drinks arrived at the table. While advertised as a Latin restaurant, Rio Sol had a Mexican twist to its cuisine. For starters, we opted for the Chips and Salsa, which came with a choice of pinto beans or Cuban black beans, guacamole, and various salsas, priced at $12.00. Was surprised we had to pay for the chips as they are usually complimentary. I ordered the Birria taco, which consisted of spiced beef, jack cheese, onions, and cilantro, served with beans and rice. It was delicious and had a mild spiciness to it.My husband ordered the Roasted Poblano Pepper, which was stuffed with cheese, corn, onions, and zucchini, served on arroz verde and black beans, with added chicken. He enjoyed it and appreciated the flavors, although I found it to be on the spicier side when I sampled it. One of our friends opted for the Roasted Poblano Quesadilla, which was generously sized and could have served as a great appetizer for the six of us. Other entrees included were the Chicken Mole Poblano, featuring marinated and grilled chicken with sesame seeds, mole, arroz verde, sour cream, mango, and cucumber salad, and the Filet Mignon Rio Sol, a grilled filet mignon marinated in chipolata-lime marinade and topped with anch chili goat cheese, served with whipped potatoes, sweet roasted carrots, cauliflower, and seared spinach.Overall, everything was delicious, with each dish offering its own distinct flavor. The menu prices and drinks are reasonably priced. If you're looking to try something different, I highly recommend giving Rio Sol a chance. We will be returning to try the other dishes.

Google
What a treat! We enjoyed a lovely bike ride out to Rio Solo. The service was pleasant, and the margaritas were outstanding. We enjoyed a nacho as a midday snack. The homemade chips made the nachos. The views made us stay a little longer. Overall, it was a great experience.

Google
Great setting by the river! Creative and fresh Latin cuisine with awesome sauces! We received prompt and friendly service. Oh the drinks are delicious! We will definitely be back!

Google
Enjoyed a fabulous meal at the new Rio Sol in Sunriver. Located right on the river, there are a lot of tables with a view. Our server, Seth, was attentive, knowledgeable, and gave 1st class service. One mistake we made was ordering the "appetizer": black bean nachos. It's not an appetizer, but would have been a full meal for my wife and I. But had we done that, we would have missed out on the Mole Enchiladas which were delicious, with a sauce that was amazing. Also, don't miss out on one of their custom cocktails - several are a new twist on the margarita. Can't wait to go back!

Google
Great location. Eat inside at sunset, to avoid lots of mosquitoes. Food excellent.

Google
Location was fabulous. We had a wonderful window table overlooking the river. The chips with guacamole were fresh and warm, excellent! Although the drinks were good, I specifically asked for no salt and was brought a margarita full of salt on the rim. We both ordered the shrimp enchiladas, one with green tomatillo sauce, one with red sauce, but again they made a mistake and brought both with green tomatillo sauce. The shrimp enchiladas had the tiny shrimp, not much flavor or seasoning. Given the excellent location and a nice view, as well as the really tasty chips, I would give it another try, but they should try to improve the accuracy of the wait staff. I would not order the shrimp enchiladas again, but willing to give something else a try

Google
Food is incredible. Cochinitas Pibil enchiladas were insanely good (as were the rings enchiladas and Birria tacos) , they have wine from Rioja by the glass, and the view is perfectly surrounded by water. Absolutely recommend!

Yelp
Surprisingly good food for the 'location trap' I thought it would be. And they do not price gouge either. Food is really good, though the kids hated the 'trying too hard' rice and beans. Location is great, with window view of the river too! Adults: Birria Tacos was really really good, everyone loved it. We are going back just to have it again this trip. 9 stars! Shrimp tacos - okay (comparing with the Birria Tacos didn't help :) ) 7 stars Drink: Mojito - good balanced flavor (just wanted a little more though) 7 stars Kids: (rated by kids) Custom rice and beans burrito - really poor (but it's custom and not worth reviewing.) they were very gracious in trying to accommodate- very kind. Rice and Beans - 5 stars (I had them, they had a unique flavor which I appreciated - 7 stars) Cheese Quesadilla - 8 stars Above average food that is worth driving / riding to. I'm curious to try their enchiladas too. Honestly, they are really trying to make food that people are will to drive to and they are achieving that goal. Best meal I've had at Sunriver so far. Location is out of the way, but eating good food by the river view is worth it! Price - average (for a Seattle-lite) Service - great. Very gracious!

Yelp
I would never recommend this place for any reason. The people were nice and the view's beautiful, but the prices are atrocious and the quality is subpar at best. $32 for 3 tacos is absurd, and the meat was burnt. The nachos were $35 and also generic/blah. The carne asada was again, burnt. I don't leave many reviews but I had to leave one here because it was so bad. I hope they change ownership again soon.

Yelp
Nice view and friendly service. We sat outside and had chips & guacamole. Celiac husband did fine. They do validate for the marina parking. They do not have a happy hour.

Yelp
We went here for dinner after reading other reviews and we were so glad we did. Service was excellent, authentic food, delicious salsas with the tortilla chip appetizer. Ordered drinks- had one with Fuego in the title-peppered vodka with mango puree, lime and a tajin rim. Spicy, slightly sweet, smooth. Carne asada wrap a was delicious. Should have ordered more of the salsa verde on the side. Ordered churros to go and they are a good portion and came with ice cream. Definitely recommend. Table with view of the water was a nice touch.

Yelp
Wow! This is an incredible place, especially considering it is well inside the Sunriver property (not somewhere the public will stumble upon). Fantastic view, the patio is incredible. Food was fantastic and the staff is very genuine, friendly and helpful. If we lived closer, this would a regular spot! We'll be back next year for sure.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Food was mid, at best, for the price. Kids menu is extremely limited, so if you've got little ones, this isn't the place for you. There's like 3 options, two of which are nachos, and are basically similar to if you took tortilla chips, dropped cheese on them, and melted them in the microwave.

Chris W.

Yelp
The Chicken Mole was the best I've had in a long time. Grilled chicken was done perfectly fork tender. Service was excellent. No complaints. It was busy and the kitchen was backed up a bit, but the server , Alberto, told us that and was very gracious about it.

Yelp
Loved the update here! Super yummy new menu items! I came with some family and odered the Chips and salsa, Carne asada bowl, and steak tacos. The chips were fantastic! Salsas and guacamole were equally delicious, just a bit of a smaller portion for four people. The Carne asada bowl was huge!!! I shared it and still had some left after I was finished eating! The flowers combined very well and I loved the freshness of the produce! I didn't personally try the steak tacos but I heard that the meat was very juicy, and the flavors really danced! We were also greeted with a free dessert! Flan! Super thoughtful and unexpected! Unfortunately I have to say that it certainly wasn't the best flan I've ever had. But it was free so it was good! :D Our service was top notch! Super personal and friendly approach! Very attentive and kind from all staff! I'd also like to mention that the bathrooms are incredible! I loved the mirrors! (Wish I knew where I could buy one) Altogether we had a delightful experience on all ends! The only thing I would look forward to would be if a few more menu items were added. Perhaps a few more chicken and vegetarian options? I will definitely be returning the next time I'm over in The beaver state!

Yelp
At lunch time, it's not busy at all and only ~5 tables were full including ours. There is a view of the river from most indoor tables. The birria empanadas came with two empanadas, beans, and rice. I was a little disappointed that the food was lukewarm to warm at best and not at all hot, making me question if it had been sitting, waiting to be sent out for a long time.

Yelp
Welcome to Sunriver, Rio Sol! I had a wonderful meal here last weekend with three girlfriends. We didn't have a reservation, so we sat at the high top table near the bar. Everyone who served us or helped us was very friendly, and we all loved our food. We shared fried avocados as an appetizer, and I really enjoyed my fish tacos. we also enjoyed taking pictures with the goofy Chihuahua painting behind us. We were told that they were not seating people at all of the tables because they were understaffed. That seemed odd to us, as there were so many people working there, and many of them were standing around not looking like they were doing a lot. I hope that they figure out a way to use their staff efficiently and make this a profitable venture. It's a great restaurant, and I can't wait to return.
google avatar

Susie P.

Yelp
We have eaten there about 5 times and have wanted to return. However we were disappointed with the food on July 29. My husband ordered the salmon dish, which he has previously enjoyed. This time it was over cooked and crisp on the outside. The purple potatoes were good. I ordered the spicy beef enchiladas. The shredded beef was tough and the tortillas were dry and tasted old. We ordered the Malbec, which we enjoyed.
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
My wife and I just ate there last night and both of us give it our top rating. The food was out of this world. Their house made mole is incredible over an enchilada and they even smoke wild mushrooms which my wife had in her dish. The service was fantastic and the atmosphere is gorgeous being on the Deschutes River.

Gerard v.

Yelp
Excellent Mexican food in a beautiful setting! Our server was delightful and, even more impressively, when I made a mistake and paid more than intended it was corrected by management with no fuss and great grace after they were notified. This is customer care carried to the next level. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Crissy C.

Yelp
Delicious and inviting. The food was very flavorful. The atmosphere and view was incredible.

Brooke B.

Yelp
We came in with a group of 8 for an early dinner--excited to enjoy the patio, good food, and bring the kids along. While the food and drinks were excellent, our experience was overshadowed by unwelcoming treatment from management. Despite our reservation, we were subtly (and later, directly) encouraged to leave due to the presence of our kids simply being... kids. Shockingly, another guest even mentioned overhearing a negative remark from management about our group before we were seated. It's a real shame--this place is a gem to bike to, but the lack of hospitality left a bitter taste that no great meal can fix.

Yelp
We were regulars at Holas and were sad that it closed but we decided to try Rio Sol tonight. The setting can't be beat, right on the Deschutes River. The interior has been upgraded and remains warm and comfortable. Although the menu is small the food is excellent. Definitely upscale Latin. We had the Mole Chicken enchilada and it was delicious. I had the Mojito Cubano and enjoyed it. The service and the price are excellent for the setting and quality of the food.

Sherri S.

Yelp
Food was just ok. Service was great; the real breaker was the $5.00 charge for a "split plate". A split plate in my experience is a dish that was split back in the kitchen with extra side. Rio Sol " split plate" was an extra plate.. handed to us .... Just empty ... but it was a clean plate. Should I be happy about paying $5.00 for someone handing me an extra plate? I don't think so.

Jeff C.

Yelp
So disappointing. We have come to Holas for many years and also visited Rio Sol when they first opened. What happened? The service was super slow- over an hour to get our meals and they forgot to serve the appetizer we ordered with our drinks. The famous flavors we came to enjoy were gone. The menu is nothing like it was before- even 3 months ago. Prices are very high for the very average tasting enchiladas. $90 for two enchilada plates, a drink and a beer.

Krista R.

Yelp
We've been here several times and have always had a wonderful experience. Great food, beautiful setting, and cheerful and attentive waitstaff. Nearly everything on the menu is gluten-free, which is perfect for me, because I have Celiac disease. Rarely do I have so many choices of menu items to eat that I am completely confident are safe.
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
I would give it a zero if I could. Wow, never going back to Rio Sol. We were there for their soft opening. I really loved their chef, food and drinks at the soft opening. Tonight we had horrible service. I made a reservation and the hostess didn't say it was for the bar at the time. She literally sat us at the front entrance where people line up. She gave us attitude when I said you didn't say our table was in the bar. She didn't try to offer us another table outside which would have been better. I saw bigger groups of people come in without reservations and get tables in the restaurant or outside. The waiter wasn't really nice either. A bit intense. We ordered drinks (expensive) and decided to leave because people waiting for a table were literally standing right next to us. Tip on the drinks was zero. We were that mad. Also, they don't have the large Hola style margaritas, you have to pay for chips and salsa and the menu options were few. Glad we left and enjoyed our dinner at VBAG. Delicious! Thank you VBAG. You guys are awesome!

Yelp
Visited Rio Sol as a guest of friends on grand opening night. I remember the place as having been Hola but this was new. Very friendly kitchen staff lined up and serving food, the woman chef stopped at each table to greet guests, shake hands and talk about the food. We were enchanted, (hope that's the right word) that she took such an interest in our opinions. The food was spectacular and I'm still craving the carnitas. That was then and this is now. Every restaurant had to find its own audience and it takes a little time. That in mind, my wife and I were driving back from Klamath Falls and I remembered having eaten there and loving it. We made the decision to stop (it was the carnitas!). Environment still lovely, drinks are still good but the food has gone completely downhill. It wasn't just one dish, it was all of them. Neither of us finished our meals and both of us were very disappointed with the whole thing. This isn't "Latin cuisine", it's basically all Mexican but a lower grade than the previous Hola place (best tamales ever). Next time we're just gonna save the time and eat at Hola because bottom line - they're consistently excellent.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
We were in the area sightseeing and looking for a place to eat. We don't usually go to (regular) restaurants since my wife is celiac and we try to eat healthy, quality food. This place had good reviews and seemed to have quality food options. We were very happy with our choice! The waitress was great. Very friendly and helpful. They were very aware of the gluten free options. The food and drinks were great. We would definitely go back again.
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
Excellent food and atmosphere. We ordered birria and carne asada tacos for dinner. Both entre were delicious. We also ordered the chips and salsa/beans/guacamole from the appetizer menu. Those were great, too. Their chips are fresh made and absolutely divine.
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
OMG, every bite was amazing. We had the Strawberry Mojito and Roasted Pineapple Mojito. We started with the Chips and Salsa. The chips were fantastic with great seasoning. They came with beans, guacamole, pico, & tomatillo salsa. All were perfectly prepared and very flavorful. I had the fish tacos, best I've ever had. Linda had the Mole Enchiladas. We will be adding this to our regular rotation of Sunriver eateries. Staff were all wonderful. Our only disappointment was that we wanted to take dessert home to enjoy later. Our favorite is Creme Brule. They have a Margarita Creme Brule, but they don't have a to go option. Another FYI, we had a 5pm dinner, it wasn't crowded or noisy. By the time we left, just before 6, it was filling up a very noisy.

Jason R.

Yelp
We went on opening night 4/11/24, right after their transformation from 'Hola'. The food has had a *major* upgrade and is fantastic. We had the filet mignon, which was superb. The Tortilla soup was also excellent, subtle and flavorful. The Paella was also very good. The food is also not very spicy, so it will suit most people. The service was great as well.

Keenyn S.

Yelp
Went in on the Friday after Thanksgiving and received amazing service even though they were busy and short staffed. The food was amazing, the flavors went well together and everything tasted fresh. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Sweet D.

Yelp
I had the mole, it was excellent. The prices were a bit shocking. Small portions, resort prices. The choices are a little better than typical Mexican cuisine, but the portions and quality don't match the cost. $200 for 4 people. You're paying for ambiance, location, chef influenced dining.

D K.

Yelp
This review isn't about the food, as we never ended up eating there, but it is about their service, or rather their policy as told to us by their hostess. My wife called the restaurant to book a table for 11, since apparently open table says that we have to call for parties larger than 8. She was told by the hostess that for a party that large, we'd have to provide a credit card and agree to a minimum spend amounting to something like $43/person. I looked at the menu and determined that $43/person was pretty ambitious on their part, particularly because a few of our group were children and wouldn't be drinking. I called back and spoke with the same person and said that while I was familiar with restaurants taking a credit card to hold the reservation (with a cancellation penalty), I had never heard of a "minimum spend" charge. I assured her that we would be eating dinner (and drinking), but that I wasn't comfortable with a minimum spend. She told me that it's a "common practice" and was the restaurant's "policy" for reservations of 8 or more people. Given that the restaurant had only been open for something like a month prior to this phone call, I found it somewhat humorous that the restaurant would have such fixed policies. Still wanting to find a place to eat for our party of 11, I suggested that we didn't even need to sit at the same table and that we could just make two separate reservations (one for 6 and one for 5). Surprisingly, the hostess said that "wouldn't be allowed", because we'd be trying to "get around" their "policy". Huh?! I thought I must have been misunderstanding her, so I tried again, but no. I heard her correctly the first time. Oh, well. We ended up having a nice meal somewhere else, and they lost out on a party of 11. Moreover, we have a vacation home in Sunriver and spend the summers here, so this new restaurant lost out on potential regulars. Hopefully (for them) the tourists will keep them in business, because I'm guessing I'm not the first person they so casually dismissed.

Jenyfer C.

Yelp
New name (used to be Hola)... now a beautiful upscale space. Food was delicious! Worth the drive from Sunriver Village if you're looking for a nice dine-in restaurant.
google avatar

Melisa W.

Yelp
You have to pay for chips and salsa. That drops 2 stars for me right away. Therefore, there wasn't enough salsa to put on the tacos so we all thought they were dry. So disappointed!!! We were wanting Hola still. Ugh.
google avatar

Nikki L.

Yelp
We ate here the other day during happy hour. The service and the staff were wonderful, however the food and pricing was below par. Our ceviche tasted fishy/old...not fresh...and cost $30. We had to ask for extra limes to doctor up both the ceviche and our margaritas, which were very sweet and syrupy. Beautiful location. I hope they can work on their food and drink quality to cost ratio.
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
My family and I stopped here after we floated the river (4 adults). The restaurant itself is very pretty and has a nice view of the water. There were maybe 4 tables sat in the restaurant, yet the service was pretty slow. The drinks were tasty, but the food was pretty mediocre. The portions are quite small compared to your average dining experience of Latin food. For four meals, and two rounds of drinks, our bill ended up at $179 for reference. Chips and salsa not included.
google avatar

Stacy D.

Yelp
Menu selections unique, lots of vegetarian choices, fantastic flavors and diversity. Healthier than most Hispanic/Latin restaurants yet very exciting creations with tons of flavor and variety. Love all that the Hola family have done and brought to Bend. Rio Sol is however --more in line with the bigger city LA, Seattle creativity so you won't have to travel as often to get your Latin fix! Service was wonderful and the restaurant is freshly updated yet casual rustic on the water in Sunriver fits perfectly with the Latin menu. (Same Hola owners --new concept/menu) Set your GPS and treat yourself to a great meal! I don't think we will make it a week b4 we are back to try other dishes!

Mike S.

Yelp
Food was delicious. Service was top notch. Atmosphere was charming. One of our very favorites here in Sunriver. Go !!!

M M.

Yelp
Happy hour is awesome. Carol is a rockstar and always takes care of me. Beautiful interior and nice river view. Food is delicious and always consistent.

Sally C.

Yelp
Wonderful flavors! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. One thing to know, is that when you order chips and salsa (there is a charge), you get a wonderful array of dips but not that many chips. They do a complimentary replenish on the chips though. It's just good to know up front that you can have more chips to go with the salsas and beans. The house made chips are fantastic if you love thick and crunchy, which we do. The taco fillings are fantastic, but the tortillas are neither crisp or soft, leaving them to be a bit tough. I'm guessing they use the same tortillas they use to make chips, for the tacos. They need to be thinner and softer for the tacos, or else crisp. Sancho's gets their taco tortillas perfectly. The mushroom enchiladas were wonderful! Also, the fried avocados were a treat. The service was great, except that our second margarita came when we were almost finished eating. Maybe if they had asked us a little earlier, we could have enjoyed them with our meal.
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
Restaurant was extremely efficient for just being 3 weeks new. Appetizer tray of guacamole and 2 salsas was delicious and beautifully presented. We had 3 different main dishes for the 3 of us. Cauliflower tacos, mole chicken enchiladas and beef enchiladas. Presentation was beautiful and each dish was well prepared and wonderful tasting. Recommended this new restaurant highly. If we lived in SunRiver, would come back often. Very busy for before season Thursday night. Make a reservation if you want to eat here. If it stays this good, it will probably always be busy.

Linn G.

Yelp
This new restaurant is awesome! The food choices are fantastic and the cuisine is delicious. The service is warm and friendly and the view from the dining areas of the Deschutes River is a perfect spot in Sunriver. We have been several times and look forward to going back again and again!
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
Fantastic food and service! "Hola!" (the restaurant that was in this place before) was fun, but Rio Sol is GREAT! The food and drink were top shelf and the service was fantastic. Great addition to Sunriver! We look forward to coming back again and again!

John R.

Yelp
We are so happy to have another dining choice in Sunriver! Rio Sol is a great addition with a Latin menu with a wide variety at reasonable prices. Located on the Deschutes River with windows on the water, the ambience is warm and comfortable. Great margaritas too!! And of course, Fernando.......

Stephen C H.

Yelp
Had dinner here the other night. A very nice setting on the river with a good view. Food and service were excellent and prices very fair. This is the old location for Hola and is just past the observatory. Hasn't been open long at this writing so the menu is not on the website yet. We tend to eat early and it was not crowded but they got busier on this Wednesday as it got closer to 6. Great staff! I had the chicken mole' and it was probably the best I have tasted. We are locals and the scenery never disappoints with the horses and elk herd out by the airport pasture. Fernando(our waiter) went out of his way to please and the hostess/receptionist was very friendly. We will be back and I will experiment with other menu items. My wife's margarita was great with a heavy pour and my mojito was refreshing. Crème brule for desert was great also.

Elwood B.

Yelp
So glad to see that Rio now has a Happy Hour from 3-5PM. Had some awesome tacos and margs from their Happy Hour menu. And as usual, the staff was super friendly. No complaints at all. They now even have a large TV in the bar area for watching sports

Jeanne T.

Yelp
Wow, where is the service? Got our drinks in 10-15 min but now 35+ min and no appetizer? Asked for some extra salsa. Our wait person finally brought to the table and was surprised our chips had not shown up yet. Server said it was a communication break down. Rest of service throughout was very slow, off, or miss from past experience. Our tacos and drinks were very good.

Andy L.

Yelp
The food was great, the service was prompt and attentive, everything arrived with perfect timing and the setting on the water is beautiful. Highly recommended!

Jon H.

Yelp
Glad this restaurant is back and has been reimagined. We will continue to support it to keep it viable. Service was marginal, hostess told us they are busy and might not get to us right away, although we had a reservation. Waiter was not very attentive, you had to wave him down and ask for anything you wanted, versus him asking you... Bartender seems to be the guy stepping out to help and keeping things running. I am sure over time the service will improve. My wife had the mushroom enchiladas and they were excellent. I had the fish tacos and they were like two fish sticks put inside a tortilla. The old halibut tacos of Hola were amazing compared to these. I wish some of the Peruvian dishes on the old Hola menu were still available. Drinks were good. We will continue to support you, however you need to improve your service level and fine tune the menu.

Jeff U.

Yelp
Pretty bad service. We told the bartender that the coke tasted funny and he said, "ok?" That's it. Very cold bartender and over priced.

Megan J.

Yelp
Very impressed, we enjoyed our evening there. Wonderful food. And the setting was amazing as well.

Deborah L.

Yelp
What a wonderful evening we had last night. Loved the vibe of this beautiful restaurant! We had a party of six and all of us raved about our dishes. We had Rio Sol nachos, Pescado , Carne asada tacos, Spicy Wild Mushrooms, and Roasted Poblano Pepper..all extremely delicious at affordable prices. Food, service and atmosphere all deserve 5 stars!

Anne M.

Yelp
This is second post . I found myself back at Rio with some friends who wanted to try it for themselves so I ordered the exact same thing again and I had the same problem I couldn't eat the chicken. It was so tough. Please fix this issue and I will come back and give a better review.
