Best Ice Cream Shops in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Ripples owner Richard Bernett started making ice cream at home and fell in love with the craft, expanding his repertoire to more than 30 flavours. He’s been temporarily displaced across the street from his original location on the Main and, since 2019, also runs a second outpost on Jeanne-Mance Street." - Valerie Silva

Google
An unassuming Montreal icon of handmade ice cream in a range of flavours. My favourite is the Fennirose, a sugary floral delight. Past flavours of the week have been vintage classic Tiger Tail and trendy Vietnamese Coffee. Don’t let summer on St.-Laurent pass by without grabbing a sugar cone here, at least once.

Google
Best ice cream I’ve had the staff were so friendly and nice and even at 11pm the place was busy and packed highly recommend!! The strawberry cheesecake flavour was AMAZING, and the fondant almond flavour is to die for, pistachio was a classic flavour and you can also get dipped cones

Michel Condoroussis

Google
I was quite impressed with this place, ice cream shops have gotten very pricy but the serving size here was a pleasant surprise. Even the smallest size or the kids size has ample ice cream. The flavours were also very good, they have a wide variety from the standards, some really original ones and some fruity ones. You also have a choice of cones and great service to go along. The location is great as this is one of the more popular areas in Montreal, so you do not need to go far.

Google
Ripples in Montreal is a must-visit for ice cream lovers, known for its homemade, creamy textures and unique flavors like Kulfi, Halvah, and the famous Chocolate 6x. With over 30 options, including sorbets and frozen yogurt, it’s a local favorite since 1984. Portions are generous, and the quality is consistently excellent.

Google
Great stop for ice cream. Had a vanilla dip and the family went for the sorbet. Nice to have non dairy options for them.

Google
Very friendly staffs. Amazing ice cream selections and flavors. They have one of the best ice cream I ever had. The size of the large ice cream is humongous. It is literally 2x the size comparing to a VT ice cream factory store name B&J.

Google
Amazing taste of the ice cream 🍦 Friendly staff Definitely visit again, I came by just looking on Google maps

Google
Excellent ice cream place. We tried a few, and all were very good.

Yelp
SO SO GOOD! I got the ginger ice cream and it blew my mind. I had no idea what to expect but this was so good.
google avatar

Lily B.

Yelp
The ice cream was soooo good!! Just a heads up but pretty much everything is in French there, but we were fine since the worker spoke English. I also thought the waffle cones were excellent. There's sorbetto there as well for those who can't have dairy!
google avatar

Yelp
They have annoying pricing to push you to order 2 scoops. The price for 2 is cheap. For 1, not so much. So visit with a friend. Or come half as often. Peanut butter strawberry jam sandwich had bread in it. The strawberry flavour was light. The peanut butter flavour was decent. It was rich & creamy. Sorbet mojito was mostly lemon with a little mint. As lemon sorbet it was good, with a good tart flavour. As a mojito it was not so good.

Yelp
May my travels always take me to delicious ice cream. May they whisk me away into the lactic land of lickable delactable, cones con sabor, and flavors that flirt with my heart and my mind. Cracks, cocaines, opioids of all shapes and sizes ain't got nothing on ice cream when I'm out of town, and like a junkie after his next fix I found my way into Ripples to get the good stuff. I've had some doozies of an ice cream stop before, and this one ranks up there. It was late at night and I was making one last stop before heading back to my delightful little Airbnb. It's hot as can be in Montreal this time of year, and so I needed one last blast of cold before finding my way up the five flights of circular stairs and into the furnace of an apartment I have rented. As I made my way slowly into this tiny shop with everyone around me sweating just like I was, I had time to eye the case. But I knew right away which two flavors I'd be having on my small sugar cone. There's one called 6x Chocolate, and one that's Sesame Halva. I dare you to find two flavors, especially when paired together like that, that will simultaneously send your heart soaring and break it into a million pieces, just like those two. They are perfect, beautiful, and where I want to spend the rest of my life; except they are so delicious and temporary and vanished way too soon. I think the double scoop plus $.50 for the sugar cone upgrade put me at just below $5CAD for the whole adventure (cash only unless you have a Canadian debit card). On the way out I noticed the line had gotten much longer, so in the heat of summer you may have to sweat it out. In the right company--the kind who likes 6x chocolate and halva--I'd probably come back every night; totally worth it.

Yelp
I've never been to Ripples but I have walked and BIXI'ed by it a million times. It's directly across the street from Coco Rico. We dropped in on a Friday (around 5:00pm) and just missed the rush. The inside is tiny and cramped; you can't even see all the flavours if people are inside. There were about 32 flavours. The menu is behind the counter: soft serve, homemade hard ice cream, frozen yogurt, milkshakes, blizzards, sundaes, slushes and drinks. They also had a variety of pints in the front freezer. There's a limit of two samples per person. Lame! - Kulfi and chai tea ($4.79) - the waffle cone ($1.00) was solid. We settled on kulfi ($0.30 extra) (a blend of cardamom and mixed nuts) and chai tea (black tea with masala chai spice blend). Real nuts inside the kulfi was great. Only other place I've had this flavour was from Crème Glacée Bo-Bec. Personally, I preferred the chai tea. This isn't my favourite ice cream spot in the city but it was a good first visit.

Yelp
Delicious rich and creamy ice cream. The line was long (it was 85°F that day) but well worth the wait. The service was fast too.
google avatar

Yelp
We don't even know where to start describing the heavenly, intense chocolatey goodness of the "chocolate 6x" at @ripplesicecream. With a very interesting array of flavours on the menu we just had to try something that defintiely delivers what it promises - crazy chocolate! Suggested by the server (who was not exaggerating the awesomeness) this thick beauty felt like biting into a velvety frozen brownie. Whether you love chocolate ice cream or not there is no question it will be one of the best you'll ever taste in Montréal.
google avatar

Gwen W.

Yelp
Small ice cream shop in Mount Royal district. And when I say small it's like 3-4 people inside at any one time. I'll have you know, though, this ice cream is smooth and savory! I got their homemade pistachio and cardamom. It was to die for!!! I love the smell and taste of cardamom, and I have always thought Columbus needs some more cardamom pizzazz in this town. I've found the perfect spot for it here, in Montreal! This ice cream oasis is cash only, so don't forget your bills. I'm sure you don't want to disappoint your tummy!!
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
I finally gave this place another shot. I'm still ambivalent. Their soft serve cone is still one of the worst I've ever had. The chocolate it just too thin and it doesn't look or taste good. I tried their hard ice cream as well and it was pretty good but it just reminded me of Ben and Jerry's in terms of taste/texture. However, service is always excellent and the flavours do look creative and unique. I guess this place just isn't for me.
google avatar

Kathy S.

Yelp
Basic ice cream at a really good price. They accept credit cards now. 5 stars for the price 5 stars for the service. 4 stars for the ice cream (it's good just nothing I've never had before) They even have a child size for a really good price! Decent, affordable ice cream. Great for kids due to the mini child's serving. Not a tourist spot, more for the locals.

Yelp
Never been to Ripples despite walking in front of it countless times (literally across the street from Schwartz's Deli). I'm glad I tried it out with a few friends and expect to be back! Pros: - One of the best ice creams I've tasted had in my entire life! My medium cone allowed me to choose 2 flavors. My first one of was the sesame halva and the other one was the chocolate 6X. ABSOLUTELY FAB. - The sole worker was a machine, he did everything and was courteous as he did it. ABSOLUTELY FAB. - Small resto, literally a hole in the wall but the selection of ice cream is pretty big, lots of exotic flavors to try out! Cons: - It's a nice hot day in early spring, this should mean every ice cream store should be fully staffed and expect a rush (especially at a key location like this). Nope. Only 1 guy working here, HUGE line-up down the side-walk. There should at least be 2 employees here. One prepping the ice-cream and the other dealing with the cash. Lots of folks avoiding the line. Missed opportunity of business and more importantly, bad impression on how you operate your store. - Price-tag is pretty high, but this is the quality stuff.

Yelp
Hype hype hype.. Ripples Montreal is a small corner takeaway icecream parlor on St Laurent Blvd. The place is very popular on google as well as on other food apps. After reading reviews on various popular apps, I had put this on my Things to Do. Many comments I read before going there suggested decent lineups. However when we reached there, only 2-3 people were ahead of us. We asked them about their most popular ice cream and they suggested 6X. I walked around 2.5 km, just to taste its most marketed chocolate 6x aaaaanddd DISAPPOINTED. Not that it was so bad...but it was like any other chocolate ice-cream. The taste of six different kinds of Ice-creams? Naahhh, Nothing like that. I tasted their Mocha (my eternal love for coffee blinds my sense of choices very often) and Kulfi flavors also and still nothing. So yeah.. Skipping this place doesn't make a difference in your Montreal Ice-cream experience. Also, Ripples Montreal is 2-3 km from all famous streets, so why bother for an average icecream parlor until you are there for 5-6 days and you have nothing to do.

Wayne Y.

Yelp
The 6x chocolate with strawberry were the bomb! Price is reasonable as well. We would definitely go back again if we were ever in town again.
google avatar

Yelp
CHOCOLATE. 6. X. That is ALL you need. Whatever type of an ice cream person you are, TRY the Chocolate 6x because you don't know what you are missing. This ice cream place is so awesome, it's like a really cool grandpa that tells you the same stories over and over again but the stories are so good and he's so amazing, you'd bring your friends over to listen to him and it never gets boring. Seriously. I love love love the Chocolate 6X and I'm actually more of an exotic-fruit and quirky-flavors kind of ice cream person. The pistachio, soursop, chai, cardamom are also awesome. I'm just saying.... don't take my words for it though, you should go try it for yourself
google avatar

Yelp
Good treat after a long hot summer day of hiring and sightseeing. Staff was friendly and good selection of ice cream.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Very good homemade ice cream! I tried a small ginger cone. It tasted great and had bits of ginger inside, but the sweetness is just right. It's not too expensive and the small size felt like medium... like there's more content in every bite! PS. I saw pictures where it's written cash only, but I paid by card today.
google avatar

Tiffany C.

Yelp
Lots of options and a lot of unique flavours - I tried the grapefruit and guava sorbet and the halva sesame (was so excited to see this as a flavour since I've never seen it before) and I loved both. Their chocolate 6x is incredibly decadent and rich. Definitely worth a try! They don't skimp on the scoops either!
google avatar

Francois M.

Yelp
Ice cream not so good. I ask a simple question to the girl in French end she answer me in english? ok?

Meredith C.

Yelp
It's so good the soft serve is creamy and fatty and the hard serve is sweet, flavorful and delicious
google avatar

Angel F.

Yelp
Pretty average ice cream, but good sorbet. We got a chocolate and mocha fondant, a chocolate and mango, and a lemon and mango. The mango and lemon sorbet tasted amazing but the ice cream could've been better. It was very creamy and the milk taste overwhelmed the other flavors. On hot days, be careful that their ice cream melts faster than their sorbet! Our ice cream started melting as soon as we left the shop. We were left with very messy fingers but their bathroom inside was perfect for cleaning up. They accept Canadian debit cards but if you're an American tourist like us, remember to bring cash!
google avatar

Arianne N.

Yelp
Good assortment of sorbet flavors! The gentleman helping us was very kind and made sure the sorbets were safe for my kids. I have one child with multiple, severe food allergies including dairy and nuts. My other child has a dairy allergy. Both were able to enjoy the guava and lemon sorbets without any reactions. The sorbets have a creamy texture to them even though they're just the fruit, sugar, and water. $5 minimum to use a card. It's a small space so we parked the stroller and kid's scooter outside by the door.

Yelp
Despite a longish line - caused more due to only one employee behind the counter - the service was actually quite good. The quality and taste of the ice cream were about top notch. In a cone shell, I tried a small with two flavors: Halva and Kulfi - to help describe the first is a Middle Eastern Sesame based treat with chocolate swirls, the later is an East Indian/Pakistani flavor of Cardamom and mixed nuts. Both excellent. Prices were fair for such good ice cream to boot plus they took cards. Finally; a little story. One Yelper who will remain nameless, did not want to stay in line, but myself and another managed to calm him enough to wait it out - and from his comments it appears he was pleased he 'chilled out' too. Glad I stayed and had some good licks.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
With over 20 years of homemade ice-cream experience, Ripples is a phenomenal creamery! On a good day, the wait-time is approximately 5 minutes. There are unique flavours such as Ginger, 6x Chocolate (possibly deadly), Chocolate Truffle Raspberry, Green Tea and Halva! The cardamon coconut pistachio kulfi (additional $0.30), paired with Masala chai ice cream are out of this world! A dash of sugar, a dash of spice, a dash of cream, a dash of love and everything nice...mix the ingredients together...voilà, delicious spiced ice cream! P.S. Don't forget to stretch your stomach at Schwartz's with a smoked meat sandwich before heading to Ripples for dessert!
google avatar

Shruthi N.

Yelp
Quaint little shop with unique flavors and combos. Got the kulfi flavor which has lots of sweet spices and was amazing! The 6x chocolate was a huge hit with chocolate lovers! The Nutella was pretty spot in too. Also, they have fun sorbet flavors! Really wanted to try the lychee one but they had run out but definitely try them out!

Yelp
Homemade Montreal ice cream? Count me in. An unassuming shop located along busy Saint Laurent surrounded by multiple bars, tourist eateries and mid to upscale restaurants. This place offers everything from ice cream and soft serve, to sorbets and cyclones. We decided to get several scoops of ice cream since this seems to be their more popular sellers: --Chocolate Truffle Framboise - Not a huge chocolate fan but this might be the winner. Just the right amount of fruit and sweetness as one of their heavier ice cream flavors. --Cappuccino Chip - Interesting flavor with an almost ginger/cinnamon cookie taste rather than an expected coffee base. --Pistachio - Slightly more artificial tasting than expected, but light enough to enjoy. --Raspberry Cheesecake - Almost too light in texture, sometimes you want more of that heavy cheesecake flavor. Prices may seem slightly above average if you don't get the smaller items, but this place is worth checking out anyways if you're in the area.
google avatar

Richard J.

Yelp
Not the best, but not the worst ice cream. Solid place but not much to write home about. Typical ice cream flavors. Great dessert place to cleanse the greasiness from Schwartz across the street.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
They have great flavour options here and while there was a line up, the two guys behind the counter were quite efficient. The portion sizes are quite big -- a small cone comes with 2 scoops of ice cream. For bigger orders they can get a little overwhelmed but they have good homemade ice cream so it's worth the wait. They accept interac for orders over $5 but not credit. I ordered the lychee sorbet and while it was good, I wish I had known I could have gotten 2 flavours for the small cone. I think it would have tasted really good with the raspberry sorbet too! I also tried the sorbet mojito but it wasn't as tasty -- a lot more sour than you would think. I don't think I will return but, the ice cream was a nice treat on a hot day. There are definitely other places I would try since it is quite pricy compared to other places that have better quality.
google avatar

Alina M.

Yelp
I stumbled upon this ice cream store and seeing the high reviews on Yelp, went in with high expectations. First off, the prices are fairly high considering the size of the cones and cups they use. It's almost $4 for a small scoop, which is pretty overpriced in my opinion. Their flavours are a little more creative than most traditional ice cream stores and it is marginally creamier. The Noah I had was pretty neat with some different ingredients mixed into it as well. But, not worth that price and on some hot summer days, that lineup. Also note that it is a tiny store that fits no more than a dozen people, so don't expect to sit inside enjoying your ice cream there.
google avatar

Issan Z.

Yelp
I love Ripples because it's casual and homey. It looks like a small ice cream shack you would find at the beach, with the wide-open door, colourful menu, and pleasant smell of suncream. It may not have the most original flavors or innovative treats in town, but the consistency of its rich, delicious ice cream is worth the visit - although some of my friends did feel that flavors could be bolder. (Disclaimer: I only get ice cream at Ripples, just like how I only get soft serve at Chocolats Favoris, and mostly sorbets at Havres-aux-glaces.) There's usually a short line-up, but it moves fast enough (gives you just enough time to make your choice). My most recent visit was last Thursday. My friends each bough a cone, and I opted for a liter of mocha ice cream to share later. It turned out to be a good decision, given the heat wave. As we were walking back home, my friends' hands got slowly covered in melted streams of cream, while they desperately tried to quench the flow. When we arrived 15 minutes later, my liter of ice cream had only started to melt on the sides. Mission accomplished! Tip: check the small freezer near the door - the pre-packed liters of ice cream in there are slightly cheaper. Can't find the flavor you wanted? Ask the employee, they might have it in the back store storage.
google avatar

Cara C.

Yelp
Great staff, great ice cream! The long line went by fast, and it was definitely worth it. Would definitely check this place out if you're in the city.

Kristi C.

Yelp
Their chocolate ice cream was amazing! I suggest ordering this when coming here. Nice dessert place, and I'm looking forward to trying their other flavors.
google avatar

Kareem E.

Yelp
Perfect treat this summer... Great service as well. Loved the passion fruit sorbet. Also the mango mojito was a hit
google avatar

Rho L.

Yelp
I love the unique flavors that Ripples offers. You walk in here thinking you know exactly what you're going to have and your bombarded with the most delectable, tempting options that you begin to second, and third guess yourself. So my recommendation is definitely step away from your norm, try something you've not yet had like chai, khulfi , 6x chocolat, cardamom etc. Or you can go with my rec, hazelnut, because it to-die-for creamilicious.....
google avatar

Caitlin C.

Yelp
7pm on a 98-degree F day and Ripples was the perfect summer treat! A small store with dozens of flavors of both ice cream and sorbets really hot the spot. While there is no place to sit inside, there are lovely built up porches/benches right outside. I got a simple combo of chocolate and matcha and could not have been happier!
google avatar

Yelp
Great icecream flavors. Service is slow and disorganized. Food: 4/5 Ice cream flavors are good. Service: 3/5 Slow and disoriented. Environment: 4/5 Small but works. Washrooms: N/A Worth it?: 4/5 Not worth a venture but if you're around. Stopped by Ripples while in the area. It was a hot day it to was in my bookmarks so it made sense. The mojito ice cream looks good and turned out to be a good choice. Service has trouble remembering full orders and seems to constantly ask what else you wanted. It seems to slow the line down and alloy some customers in larger groups. He also got a normal cone for a boy when he specified 3 times he wanted a sugar cone. Instead of correcting it he just said sorry and moved on to the next person. Not impressed with that at all. The ice cream flavors are good. Service could shape up tho. I also wouldn't venture here for ice cream but if I'm around, I'd give them another try.
google avatar

Annshu S.

Yelp
The rose & fennel ice cream is the bestest thing ever! It's sooo good that I drag my husband here almost everyday to get my favorite ice-cream in Montreal. I am not a fan of their pistachio ice-cream (tastes artificial to me) but their strawberry ice-cream is pretty good too. Very fresh & homemade sort of.
google avatar

Dave N.

Yelp
I've been coming here for quite some time now , I've known about ripples for over a decade and have been coming here even before it got burnt down . I've never had anything bad to say about it until yesterday. I was with someone that did not want a big ice cream and to be honest I didn't either but sharing ice cream is just one of those things that I rather not do. So we asked if there was a kid size , and one of the employee answered yes , she was willing to give it to us but another one said no it was reserved only for kids. I'm not a big fan of that policy considering Dipperie was only a few blocks away and they'll sell a mini size to anyone. Keep your money and bring the business to the other ice cream store ! Also kudos to the employee that was willing to accommodate our needs , she's a great employee !
google avatar

Anita L.

Yelp
Hands down the BEST chocolate soft serve I have ever had. I stumbled upon this place after having dinner on Saint Laurent, noticed the long line and thought to myself that this place HAS to be good. I asked some people in line what their favorite thing to get was and most of them swore the soft serve was a godsend. I AGREE. My friend got their chai ice cream, which was amazing. It actually had an authentic chai taste; none of that powdered flavor you know is just a bunch of cinnamon. You definitely have to try this place out - the line is out the door but it moves quickly. Totally worth it.
google avatar

Rach P.

Yelp
We really enjoyed this little ice cream place. Their green tea ice cream was everything that I could have wanted. The ginger was also very yummy and anything chocolate. The only thing I wouldn't get again is the coconut, it wasn't as smooth as I would have hoped and tasted too much like sunscreen. The coconut could have improved if it was a toasted coconut.
google avatar

R O.

Yelp
Little spot and I got a pistachio ice cream on a cake cone. Deliciously made & comparable to like Thrifty's Rite Aid. Lots of different flavors and little higher end compared to like a baskin robbins
google avatar

Rosie B.

Yelp
TLDR: Creamy decadent yummy ice cream. I have passed by this place many times and their line is always out the door. This is because they have a great assortment of homemade ice cream flavours to please all palates. I had to go with pralines and cream and maple syrup which both tasted like their namesake. The service is good and the portions are generous, but that may be because they are on the pricier side. Please note this is a takeout ice cream place, they do not have any seating for you to enjoy your frozen treat. The ice cream was tasty, but there are so many other places for me to try that I don't think I will be visiting again sometime soon.
google avatar

Steve S.

Yelp
This is one of the classic establishments in Montreal. They have been making homemade ice cream for longer than I can remember. What's there to say, for me this independent shop is the reference by which all other ice cream shops in Montreal compare. From what I remember they were the first that offered green tea ice cream, my fave. However, this last time I went against my natural choice and opted for the chai ice cream and whoa ... New favourite ! Bottom line this place is an easy recommendation.
google avatar

Kristie N.

Yelp
Oh ripples....This place will be the end of me. I have gone here for the past two days at 10pm to get my sweet tooth satisfied. Their ice cream is delicious!! I highly recommend the blackberry cheesecake flavour and the mocha almond fudge. You must get the waffle cone though!!!!!!!!!! A small with a waffle cone is the perfect amount to satisfy any sweet tooth (around $4.50). If you like coffee flavoured ice creams, you should get the mocha almond fudge. For a weaker coffee flavour, try the cappuccino chip. I tried the pistachio (it costs an extra 30 cents) yesterday and it was pretty good, but it was a bit too creamy for me. But there were big chunks of crushed pistachios in the ice cream which was a huge plus. I'm hoping to try more flavours like green tea, chai tea, oreo and french vanilla. I have heard that their french vanilla flavour is their best! Tip: If you don't want to wait in line at La Diperie, come here because their line goes much faster! They have a stamp card, buy 9 ice creams and get the 10th free!
google avatar

Bloom M.

Yelp
It says "homemade ice cream" on the sign of this adorable ice cream shop (with a great selection of frozen yogurt/sorbet) and whether that's ACTUALLY true or not doesn't really matter...because it sure tastes like it! Their ice creams are perfectly creamy and not overly sweet (although you can opt to get a sweeter sundae or blizzard). A "small" order isn't a mini - they do make sure your cup/cone is full. The service is friendly and knowledgeable about what each flavor consists of (don't be shy to ask questions). There are no places to sit and that's fine by me. The ice cream is kept cold enough that you can eat it while walking without worrying about it melting 30 seconds later. Best part? REASONABLY PRICED!
google avatar

Ayana O.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream that's fresh and creamy. Very long lines so anticipate wait and its cash only, unless you have Canadian debit.
google avatar

Calvin T.

Yelp
I tried de chocolate 6x and the mango sorbet,it was good and good portion, but the place looks a little bite dirty, not very clean.....maybe need a renovation...and clean up ....
google avatar

Sushan T.

Yelp
IT IS SO CHEAP! I took a medium ice cream with three scoops. The flavours were raspberry cheesecake, chai tea and sesame. The sesame seemed like an exotic flavour but it really did not live up to my expectations. My favourite one was the chai tea By the way, the three scoops took me more than 30 min to finish. It was huge! For the price, I really suggest it! My boyfriend took a small chocolate 6x and he also liked it a lot! It was "full of flavour".
google avatar

April Z.

Yelp
The cardamom noix was the BEST, not too sweet and full of nuts, give you a complicated texture and refreshing flavor
google avatar

Bobby A.

Yelp
Along with Wild Willy's out in the West Island, Bilboquet in Outremont and Meu Meu on St. Denis, one of the best ice cream parlours in Montreal. With unique one-of-a-kind flavours made from scratch including Chai, Ginger, Green tea, Halva (or Helva or Halwa depending on what part of the Islamic world you come from) and the best, most to die-for flavour of all, Khulfi, Ripples has originality down to an art-form. The Khulfi flavour is based on a traditional Indian ice cream made with heavy cream, pistachios, crushed cardamon pods and saffron - once you try this, you'll never go back to vanilla! Halva is a Middle-Eastern sweet, usually made from semolina and can be sweetened with rose water and nuts. Ripples is only open part of the year, during the summer months so go while you can!
