Walked past this little place on our way to Red Robin (not my choice) and paused long enough to check out the menu... which caught the attention of the lone worker/owner/chef/human being extraordinaire Ron T! We didn't even set foot in the door and yet he came after us, excited to share his food, yes... but more importantly, his passion!
You see, Ron was once homeless... but he fought back, picked up some serious skills working in various kitchens around Portland, and worked with various non profits to bring his passion of providing a second chance to others who find themselves without a place to call home... in need of stability, in need of someone who understands, in need of a helping hand. Ron T provides that by teaching life skills in a stable environment. What's more, is the food that he cranks out is legit!
That night, he gave us a little sample of mac n cheese... not Kraft...not gourmet...but straight up made with love by somebody's mama...or Ron! Even though we couldn't eat there last night, that bite of Mac N Cheese and Ron's personality and his mission brought us back out for dinner tonight!
We tried numerous things from the menu. The burger, chicken sandwich, and bnls chicken wings were good... the bone in wings were better... crispy fried naked and then tossed with a lemon pepper sauce... but for $5 more you get 2 Sides and that is where the soul steps up to the plate! Collard greens, red beans and rice, and did I mention Mac n Cheese? The honey cornbread is good if you like it sweet... but the real surprise was the cabbage...yes, the cabbage. I grew up in a relatively poor family and cabbage was a common staple at our table... as an adult, I don't often eat stewed cabbage. It's that dish from my childhood that I tend to avoid... but when Ron asked if I liked cabbage, my politeness took over and I said yes... not sure why cause I don't really like it...I just tolerate it. However, this cabbage.... changed that! Seriously y'all...get the cabbage! It is truly crave worthy...So full of flavor and comfort! I have no idea how he did that either because my tastebuds rarely steer me wrong, but I think his sides might be vegetarian friendly. You will have to ask to confirm but I feel like the greens were missing that smoky pork flavor I am used to and I didn't see any hock or sausage in the red beans and rice... but the cabbage...oh, it was buttery. When you don't have meat back home you would be amazed at what can be done with butter or margarine....and Ron made the lowly Cabbage the star of this show...well alongside the Mac n Cheese!
Check this place out... support a man with a hard past, but one that has given him a vision for the future. Enjoy a hearty, delicious meal and remember to pay it forward to those around you... the world needs more heart and soul!
