The Best Restaurants Near Smith, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire | Eater

"Founded in 2019 with a mission to serve handmade baked goods in a homey, comforting space, this Greenfield shop has become a favorite among locals, who start their mornings with fresh tarts, sourdough loaves, and other pastries. Sourcing local is a priority for owner and head baker Brian Meunier, who relies on Holyoke’s Ground Up Grain, Deerfield’s Clarkdale Fruit Farms, and other neighboring producers." - Nat Belkov

I've been here a couple of times and have enjoyed it each time. One morning I got a danish that was beyond amazing and the second time I got their buffalo cauliflower pizza special which was also delicious. The pizza slices are a generous portion and I really like their outdoor seating. Even on a warm sunny day it was shady enough to enjoy my meal. All the staff are very friendly and I will definitely keep going!

Wow! I am very impressed with the quality of the baking. They have upped their game since first opened. They are at the level of French bakery. My favorite place in Western Mass! The almond croissant and the pistachio chocolate croissant are to die for!

I was really excited to try this bakery, since I’d heard great reviews. I went before noon, and they were out of all loaves by then. That’s fine, I’ve heard this place sells out quickly. I got a baguette instead, and I wasn’t too impressed. The baguette was a bit tough and chewy not crunchy and soft in the inside. It was still better than what you’d find at the store, but it was nothing to write home about. The employees were all super nice, though. A true 3/5 stars.

If you are looking for the best baked goods in the area, look no further! Rise Above delivers on exceptional flavors, presentation, and quality. We got the Almond Croissant and a heavenly marzipan stuffed treat which were both so good they were gone before we drove away. 10/10. The time and effort they put in to providing top notch baked goods is so appreciated, thank you!

If you're in the Greenfield Mass area and you don't stop at this Bakery you're doing yourself a disservice. The bread is some of the best I've ever had. Highly recommend if you're in the area

Google
What a little gem of a bakery in the town of Greenfield. I bought an assortment of baked goods for my coworkers and they were not disappointed. The chocolate croissants, almond croissants, cookies, and other baked goods were delicious! The service was friendly and I will go back during my time here.

I'm in western MA for the weekend and went looking for a bakery. I happened upon Rise Above. I was looking for a cake, which they don't do. But while I was in there I decided to get a few other things. And honestly, if you are THIS good at bread, don't waste time on cake. These bagels are otherworldly. They are so soft that I couldnt even bring myself to toast them. I didn't personally try the chocolate croissant, but my husband has said, "oh! Wow!" three times now. Some of the reviews mentioned that they staff were short tempered. That was not my experience. They were busy! Like, line out the door at 10am and it clearly had not stopped all morning. They were quick, they didn't stop to make small talk, the weren't amusement park friendly, but they were not anywhere close to rude. They were busy and they moved through a line of 10 people in under 5 minutes. Have you ever seen the Seinfeld soup episode? Yeah, even if they had been nasty (which they were not) the bread would still have been worth it. I don't know when I'll be back out this way again, but if I ever get the chance to, I will be stopping at Rise Above. Well done, folks.

Google
I tried to find a way to add 100 extra stars to this review. Five stars are just not enough. Rise Above bakery is my favorite bakery! (With kudos to my dad who was also a serious baker and every weekend and woke us up with delicious smells of everything he'd been baking). I appreciate all of the local ingredients and farms that this bakery uses and supports. Rise Above has such a diverse range of deliciousness! Everything is beautiful,, yummy, and fun to share. And there's always something that lights up the kids! Apologies, I had to taste before posting :)

Yelp
Quality has gone way down. The pastries are very often way overbaked. The bread lacks enough salt. The coffee has never been good. I used to really enjoy shopping here but not anymore.

Yelp
I'm so glad I made time to visit this wonderful bakery. The food was inventive and tasty ....a cardamom bun & a roasted carrot ricotta tart. Delish!! the service was friendly & helpful. The owner was kind & listened to my needs as a patron. The ambiance was cute and inviting.

Yelp
I have stopped in to Rise Above several times, and each time, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of baked goods available. From different types of bread to croissants, muffins, and more, all fresh and delicious! Hot coffee and tea are available along with inside seating and friendly staff. Don't pass up this little gem on Main Street!

Yelp
Quite possibly the best bakery in the entire Northeast - at least! We love bread and have tasted bread from great, local bakeries all over the US, Canada and Europe and this place stands out. Where shall I start? The croissants, the rye breads, the cream puffs, the hammentaschen... etcetera. If you are close enough to visit, make a stop! (would give 10 stars if I could)

Yelp
I'd give this place six stars if I could, with special appreciation for Charlotte. We needed two platters of pastries for a funeral of a loved one, and all of our local bakeries said no, save one. Finding Rise Above Bakery was such luck! Not only was communication easy and helpful, the actual cost was quite reasonable. Add to that delivery! to Wilmington, Vermont, for a nominal fee. And the product? Outstanding!! Simply delicious! Very well received, everyone asked about the bakery. Full of gratitude for your bakery. You made a hard day easier, and your customer service is top notch (which is hard to find).

Yelp
I live in Western MA this is my absolute favorite bakery bc of its artisan crafted delicious pastries and breads. Honestly nearly everything I've had is spectacular. Muffins, buns, bagels, croissants, lots of creative and seasonal ingredients, and great coffee! It has all five star reviews for a reason-- if someone gives it less than five stars you should seriously question their sanity

Yelp
Excellent service, despite being a busy spot. If you go on a Saturday when the farmers market is open, expect to wait 15 minutes to get your parties and coffee. Open bright and early at 7, closed Mondays. Oh and the pastries and coffee are amazing! A full scale patisserie with things like almond and chocolate croissant, peach tart, cardamom rolls, pecan sticky rolls, cookies, bread. Usually about 20 items to choose from. Their Guatemalan coffee from Share coffee in Hadley is the perfect paring for the sweets. Can't say enough about how great it is, you have to try it yourself!

Yelp
Great new addition to the Main street options. This Place will give the Co-op a run for its money in the fresh bread and pastries department & might just beat them on the bagel front. Ambiance wise- it has all the big wood toned, airy, Brooklyn hipster, angley- art vibe that brings flocks of migrant lap top gazers to roost. Counter staff are the pre-requisite cutting edge fashion page looks softened by local good manners and efficient service. Totally worth a detour.

Yelp
Fabulous pastries! I tried the pain aux raisins, the gougères, and the cardamom bun, and all three were as wonderful as anything I've eaten in fancy SF bakeries. My vegan pal had the sunbutter cookie; do not be deceived by its unassuming appearance - it's tender and tasty too!

Yelp
Awesome little bakery that just opened in my work town. They do fantastic breads! Honestly this is the strength of the shop, and pretty much what you'd expect from a bakery called "Rise Above." I've had the Sourdough, the Rye and I have a loaf of Honey Rye now. Other than that they do a range of cookies, muffins, bagels, pretzels, and some pastry, but so far not your typical! This morning they had Gougeres (A small bun made of a brioche type bread with guyere cheese) and some Cardamom sticky buns.) They offer Kombucha, a wide assortment of teas, and SHARE coffee. The seating area is pleasant and eclectic. They have local art on the wall. One of the employees told me that they're looking to do live music at night. I'm happy to have this shop here, and am very excited to watch them grow!

Yelp
Rise above has a great selection of sweet and savory pastries. I feel like they're always getting creative with flavors and coming up with great seasonal treats. The staff here is very nice as well!

Yelp
Tired this bakery for the first time today. The customer service was amazing. Very friendly and welcoming. Got a bagel with cream cheese and it is so tasty. Perfect amount of cream cheese. Would Come back.

Yelp
Yay! A great little bake shop with fresh breads, pastries and excellent coffee. They just opened and seem to sell out of bread by afternoon, hoping they get a second batch going for us after-work bread lovers.

Wendy T.

Yelp
Everything is amazing! I love bread!! Bread bread bread it's a little miracle with attentive and thoughtful staff!

Yelp
I noticed this bakery during a recent visit to Greenfield and decided to take my daughter here for a treat. They didn't have very many items left late in the day but what they did have was fantastic. We enjoyed a bagel, toasted and a cupcake. If you after looking for fresh bread and other things like that then you will need to arrive much earlier in the day; perhaps when they open or just after. I'm told they sell out very quickly as the goods are all excellent. Just a note about the service. They were extremely helpful and friendly and even though I arrived shortly before they closed for the day they didn't seem at all bothered or upset about it.

Yelp
with bittersweet bakery closed on mondays and tuesdays, i was in the market to find another local coffee shop. the drink menu is devastatingly short, and with little variety to choose there unless you're there for tea specifically. unfortunately, i wanted coffee. the baked goods they offered seemed pretty good with a fair variety, but i also wasn't a fan of $4.50 for a "16 oz" cold brew. the eco friendly straw also cracked on me just from taking it out of the wrapper after i had already left, so i had little suction to drink my coffee. definitely does not appeal to any sort of younger crowd, but based on previous reviews, seems they will do well for the target audience they tend to appeal to

Yelp
Terrific bagels! I was impressed to see what a safe setup the place had during the pandemic.

Yelp
If a bright, cozy, interesting spot to experience unique artisan breads and pastries is what you're after-you will find it here! The manifestation of this shop is a lifelong passion for Brian, who is the owner and pastry chef/baker, one of Culinary Institute of America's finest.

Yelp
I saw this bakery on my way to TD bank the other day and finally went to try it this morning. Me and my hubby tried the Everything bagel and it tasted so good! Then we bought a pretzel and a few other pastries and they are all so good! This is such a good bakery! Highly recommend it to all of you!

Yelp
Today I had my best croissant ever...that is right....ever! Cheese/mushroom/and fresh arugula...sick good. Two local cheeses blended with perfect balance. Perfect light crisp outside, not too flaky and not too buttery. Wow!

Richard H.

Yelp
Found this place when looking to kill a few hours in Greenfield. Really great looking and tasting baked good. Interesting (read: clever and novel) twists on classics. Like fig and sprouted rye roll. Had a delish Swedish Cardamon bun. Not too sweet - perfect really.

Emily M.

Yelp
I love this place! The staff is incredible friendly and the food is amazing! The everything bagels are the absolute best. Go check it out and I'm sure that you couldn't possibly be disappointed.
