I've walked past Rise & Grind locations throughout the city and decided to come in for a weekend coffee date. My standards for choosing a coffeeshop usually depend on whether they offer specialty lattes or tea lattes--their expansive menu featuring flavors like black sesame and cookie butter are right up my alley. I also typically look for a good light brunchy food option such as a breakfast sandwich or toast. In this regard, Rise & Grind checks off all my boxes.
Seating is plentiful inside with a few small outdoor tables as well. The interior is spacious and well-lit. Very cozy! However it was pretty full when we stopped by around 10am because a lot of customers were posted up with laptops, books--a great study spot. We grabbed seating at the communal high-top table. There is a self-order kiosk that moves pretty quickly as well as a line to just order with a barista, but it seemed to move much more slowly as they were making drinks/food and running the register at the same time.
My bf and I both ordered hot lattes to go. I got the creme brulee latte which advertised having a torched sugar topping, like you might see at a boba shop. While I did get a sugary taste with some grittiness, the "brûlée" part of the drink was already dissolved between the time my name was called and I took my cup back to my seat. Additionally the foam/crema component of both our lattes, which I argue is the primary reason I'd ever consider paying $6 for a professionally made coffee, was very disappointing. The result was a kind of amateur looking and tasting latte that I feel like I could made myself with a Nespresso machine. As snobby as that might sound, there are some really high quality third-wave coffeeshops in SF that I'll gladly pay an equal amount or more for (Home Coffee Roasters, Red Bay, etc.) so my expectations are high but not unfounded.
The food was pretty tasty actually, which warrants the 4 stars total. My bf had the breakfast sandwich with no bacon and I had the turkey sandwich, which was very generous in portion size. I've seen avocado toasts in their past menu iterations so I'd be down to try that if they brought it back--I'd also give their coffee another try, but definitely in a different flavor or perhaps iced.
