Sandwiches don't excite me, they remind me of the SADwiches my mom packed me for lunch.
A slice of Bar S deli meat in-between two slices of burnt toast. No cheese. No condiments. No veggies.
Mmmm, tastes like punishment!
Yea, so I don't seek out sandwiches much.
But, Rise & Set had me at their Crying Tiger Sandwich! But more on that later.
Soft opening over the weekend, Rise & Set is a new brunch spot in Polk Gulch from the owner of Thai Spice. They took over the Modern Thai spot.
Open for takeout and indoor dining. I believe it's walk-in only.
It hasn't blown up on socials yet so it was very quiet during my weekday lunch visit.

Aussie-Style Brunch with a Thai Twist.
Aussie brunches focuses on fresh, seasonal produce and healthy options like smashed avocado on toast, smoked salmon, halloumi cheese, and poached eggs. And, quality coffee is a must. Think Bluestone Lane with some Thai fusion dishes - tartine, benedicts, omelets, salad, burgers, sandwiches, pastas, sweets (pancakes, waffles, french toast), and more.
No alkie (liquor license pending?).

* Crying Tiger Sandwich: 8 oz Grilled Marinated Steak w/ little gem, mint, green onions, cilantro, housemade num-tok butter, roasted rice powder, toasted sourdough ($28): https://tinyurl.com/489nf7xz
- Served w/ fries
- Requested medium rare
Other than seeing chefluencers make this on TikTok, this is the first time seeing Crying Tiger in sandwich form in a resto.
The Crying Tiger ribeye is marinated in a classic Thai sauce called nam jim jeaw made with tamarind, fish sauce, chiles, herbs, and toasted rice powder.
The result? Tender, juicy cuts of well-marbled ribeye with explosive yet balanced flavors of salty, sour, sweet, and sour with a slight kick and delicious roasty flavor from the rice powder. The generous portion of ribeye was sandwiched between buttery toasted sourdough.
It was messy to eat with slices of ribeye falling onto the plate but it was worth getting my hands dirty. If I had to nitpick, it could have been spicier or served with a side of thai chili powder to doctor to your liking.
Served with freshly fried battered fries with a creamy, tangy ketchup-mayo dipping sauce. Well-seasoned, extra crunchy on the outside and airy soft on the inside.

Polite, friendly, and warm Thai hospitality from Fa and the chef.
Food did take a bit to come out but they're brand new.

Beautifully renovated space, stylish minimalism with neutral colors, white exposed brick walls, and plants throughout. There's about 12 tables in the main dining room and 4 tables in the completely enclosed front patio (more like an extension of the resto). Instrumental music playlist.

Challenging street parking. Polk/Bush Garage is a block away (1399 Bush).
Overall, there's no shortage of great brunch spots in the city including Thai-American Fusion spots but Rise & Set has some unique dishes that set them apart like their Thai spin on pasta carbonara with Thai chili that I'm coming back for!
