18 Best Greenville, South Carolina, Restaurants | Eater Carolinas

"Julian Loué launched a pandemic bread-baking hobby into a second career, opening Rise Bakery in West Greenville. The team at Rise produces bread daily for several restaurants — like a Kalamata olive and polenta country loaf — but locals stop in for morning pastry and perfectly lacquered croissants. A double-twisted cardamon bun is aromatic and beautifully constructed, but a stellar pairing is the orange creamsicle Danish alongside a juniper latte. Hot and cold sandwiches are available at lunch, and Instagram stories announce featured pastries for the week. Holiday items also appear, such as hot cross buns and galette des rois." - Stephanie Burnette

On a spur of the moment venture into the villages to get pottery next door, we stopped in at Rise Bakery. My wife was super excited to get amazing artisan bread at very reasonable prices. The vibe is laid back and welcoming. I’m eager to come back in a morning sometime and see things at their peak.

We visited this outstanding bakery that offers a wonderful selection of sweet and savory items. We decided to order a few treats to go and enjoy outside in the beautiful morning weather. The cardamom bun was absolutely amazing—soft, sweet, and with just a hint of spice. The morning bun had a delightful texture, combining softness with crunchy bits that added a nice contrast. The sourdough chocolate chip cookie was unique; it had that characteristic tanginess while still being sweet enough to remind you it was a chocolate chip cookie. Lastly, we tried the apple pie croissant, which was our least favorite. Unfortunately, the croissant itself felt a bit bland compared to the others. The staff was friendly, and the bakery offered a few cozy seats inside for those who prefer to stay. Otherwise, they packaged everything beautifully for us to enjoy elsewhere. Overall, a lovely experience!

We were visiting Greenville and walking around the West End. We dropped by this bakery because hubby said I had to get a croissant. The croissant was delicious. I did get a morning bun that looked amazing. I didn't eat it the same day, and it did not hold up to well the next day. They had sold out of the sweet potato bread. The next time we are in the area, this is a place to definitely return to and try more options.

Seriously, I cannot WAIT to go back. Such a cute little bakery with nice people, willing to answer questions or give you time to peruse and choose what you want. And the food. THE FOOD! I got a Gorgonzola cheese, fig, and ham danish and I have been thinking about it for the past week. I’m not kidding. I am trying to find an excuse to go back so I can buy MORE things and take a few loaves home with me. Also, really good coffee. I can’t say anything bad about my experience except that it ended.

I love this place so much. Their sourdough country loaf is now a staple in my house, and I can never resist their pastries when I visit. My favorites are their morning buns, everything danish and cardamom buns. You really can't go wrong though! They also serve local coffee and are always so pleasant to interact with. You are seriously missing out if you don't pay them a visit!

Would post a picture but ate my loot already. This bakery has a selection of bread, pastries, hot and cold drinks. The variety is just enough. Bread is on a rotation weekly with some available daily (baguettes for our homesick french comrades). They have the staple pastries (croissants, etc.) as well as new things to try (kouign-amann, lavender and peach danish, etc.). Seating is limited inside, but the friendly staff provide quick counter service. Bonus, they have dog treats for all the good dogs, which is all of them.

Google
Rise has been around for a minute now and I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews. Every single top restaurant in the area uses their bread so I already knew they were putting out high quality products. After trying their sour dough chocolate chip cookie crumbled on coffee icecream at a food event this weekend I had to go and find the full cookie to really experience. Best chocolate chip cookie I’ve ever had. The butter croissant was perfection and the cardamom bun was equally delicious. Rise is the spot for sure

Yelp
Cute lil bakery offering everything from a danish to cinnamon roll to breakfast sammy to homemade cheeses n butter! Oh and the have a full coffe n tea bar with in house made syrups including ear grey or juniper syrup! The latte I ordered was perfect creamy with little foam as requested and hot enough that I could zip on it for a bit to enjoy! It's located in an artsy area of west Greenville that seems to be going through a transition of some sort! The cherry cream danish was excellent- real cherries not that yucky compote stuff and real vanilla cream and just enough sweet to enjoy but not nauseating artificial sweet! When we return to Greenville we shall definitely stop again!

Yelp
Friendly faces as soon as I walked in and a delicious smell of bread. It is easy to see the chefs making yummy items from the front, that was fun to see. I had a chocolate croissant with beautiful lamination and a buttery taste. Also had the morning bun, I would say that was good but not amazing...a little bit drier that I like but I would get it again. The only real negative is price, items are about 10-20% more expensive than other places or than expected. Overall, I would still recommend.

Yelp
An incredible place to get sourdough! I managed to get my hands on a bunch of pastries and they were all incredible. Cannot wait to go back again on of these days. I'm taking country loaf and making grilled cheese sandwiches with it and I can't wait. Appreciate the help from the folks at Rise Bakery!

Yelp
My son lives in Greenville and regularly brings us breads and pastries, I can honestly say these are some of the best pasties I have ever eaten in the USA or around the world. Every bread and pastry we have eaten has been excellent or beyond excellent. The breads are crusty on the outside and fluffy inside. The pastries are buttery, sweet without being overly sweet, this bakery is a gem.

Yelp
Does not disappoint! I moved to Greenville in January and have bought bread, cookies and pastries from Rise Bakery on multiple occasions. Haven't had anything that hasn't been off the hook! Brought the Herb and Comte Bread to an Easter Dinner, and everyone wanted to know where I got it. Oh yea, the sourdough chocolate chips were also a huge hit!

Yelp
Husband and I ordered the baguettes--ham for me, turkey for my husband. They looked delicious but we could not bite through the crust. Took them apart and still could not bite through the crust. How long were they sitting out. Better to make fresh. Hope this helps. Rise Bakery had a phenomal display of breads. Sadly, we left without purchasing anything else as we like to support our local small businesses.

Yelp
Amazing little bakery! Never had something from Rise that wasn't delicious. Their pastries and breads are so so good!! I don't think I can choose a favorite.

Yelp
The pastries were expensive and dry. I was not pleased with my purchase. Also, a lot of the baked goods they make, I can not eat. I just wanted real Italian bread. Or semolina bread not some artistic creative bread with ingredients I do not care for. I just wanted a fresh baked Italian bread with the to die for crust I used to get in NY.

Yelp
What a delightful space! Bright and filled with creative and classic baked goods, Rise Bakery is a must visit. Greeted warmly upon entry, I talked to a friendly smiling face behind the counter, ordered a few things to enjoy over the week, and was on my way. Delicious everything sourdough loaf was the highlight of toast and and eggs for breakfast over the next week. I tried the cardamom bun, but it was sitting in my fridge for two days before I got to it. Do you know with a tiny bit of time in my air fryer, it was still so moist and flavorful as if I just picked it up that day? Not impartial to heading to a bakery day of for a day of treat, but what a surprise when it actually lasts in the fridge for day or two and is still delicious! Looking forward to trying new things! Highly recommend.

Yelp
I love bread & the bread from Rise is fresh & delicious! I also tasted their wonderful pastries! Always greeted with a warm hello and fast service too! So good!!

Yelp
Overpriced with terrible customer service. C'mon $11 for a loaf of bread? For that price you should be super smiley with each transaction.

S L.

Yelp
Ordered a variety of pastries and a country loaf. All were delicious! All of the pastries and loafs looked fresh and tasty and they were unique and special seeming too (everything bagel danish, cardamom bun, hazelnut bun, etc). The staff were friendly and it was a nice environment. I also appreciated that they were open at 7am on Saturday. Will be back.

Yelp
Love having such a nice bakery in the area. Their sesame loaf is a great sandwich bread and I'm in love with their cardamom bun. Danishes are always also a treat and their baguette sandwiches are delish. No complaints so far and I look forward to trying more!

Yelp
Great choices. Wonderful unique baked options. Competes with the best bakeries anywhere.

Yelp
No matter what you choose at the Rise Bakery, your selection will be better than you imagined. My favorites are the Morning Bun, Focaccia, and, of course, the baguette. Of course, they're always adding new delights to their menu of morning buns. And during the holidays, they feature some very special items such as the more than yummy pecan pie with chocolate in the bottom and a superb crust. There's always something delicious at the Rise Bakery in the Village of West Greenville (SC).

Yelp
A real bakery serving delicious croissants, pastries, and breads. Ham and butter on baguette just like in France. We have visited every weekend for the last month and it has been consistently excellent.
