Rise Bakery

A great local place dedicated to serving delicious gluten-free goods, and more than just the easy-to-make items! They also serve sandwiches and paninis that look good. There are two smalls tables if you wanted to eat in, but I wouldn’t call it spacious. The staff was very kind.

Delicious 100% gluten free bakery. The croissants are flaky and the cookies are perfectly, crisped on the edges and soft in the middle. Don't miss out on this gem! Cozy carryout place, but there are a couple of tables.

I had heard good things about Rise Bakery from my neighbors and I wanted to try it. I ordered for delivery the Gluten Free Everything Inside Bagels, the vegan cream cheese and Gluten Free carrot cupcakes. The bagels are absolutely the best I have tasted. The vegan cream cheese is tasty and has the consistency of cream cheese. You don’t need to use a lot to enjoy its good taste. The carrot cupcakes are moist and not too sweet. I absolutely enjoyed all that I bought and I am thrilled about this bakery.

Unparalleled! My partner has celiac, so we patronize this bakery often, and even as a wheat-eater myself, these are no-compromise breads and sweets. If you opt for delivery, everything arrives perfectly packed and delicious. If you go into the store, you get the added experience of interacting with the friendly and helpful staff. I really can't say enough positive things about Rise!

Got a lemon bar and a chocolate croissant. Both were yummy. Next time I will try an egg sandwich on a bagel. I would come back.

Got the bacon, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich, with a chocolate croissant. On the spectrum of gf options that exist, it was average. Bagel was a little hard and the croissant was more of a biscuit, not enough chocolate. $12 for the sandwich, $6 for the croissant. Some things I’d recommend changing: adding more chocolate or some kind of sauce to the croissant so it’s not so dry. Also warming it up and melting it would make it taste better. The bagel was hard so I’d recommend adding more cheese or butter to soften. It was supposed to be an everything bagel but I didn’t taste that, so maybe more of the seasoning as well.

The owner of this establishment must be protected!!!! I cannot understand how they got the gf dough to rise and to stay so flakey and buttery. I am astounded in the best way. Those biscuits and croissants belong in a museum. They were perfect and beautiful. I’m still in disbelief even now lol. Can’t wait to get more!!

Yum, yum! When you don't have these options close to home you order a wide assortment of goodness! The buttermilk biscuit with egg and bacon was so delicious! Chocolate eclair! When ever to you get a GF eclair. Can't wait to be hungry and eat the chocolate croissant! Sweet staff!

Amazing!!! I had a day off during a work trip and spent the entire day going back and forth between Rise & a nearby coffee shop to work. My only wish is that they had wifi or a larger seating area to be able to hang out there! I had a bagel sandwich for breakfast which was amazing - fresh, a bit crunchy, and flavorful - I didn't love the square eggs, but I know many places mass prepare eggs in that way for sandwiches. I came back for lunch and got an amazing sandwich, plus some sweets to go. The donut, croissant, and cupcake were all delicious! An amazing gluten free find in DC.

Rise Bakery offers a selection of gluten-free breads, pastries, and breakfast sandwiches. Today, I indulged in a gluten-free chocolate croissant and some brioche buns, both of which were delicious. However, I was disappointed to find their new item on the menu, a GF pretzel, had sold out--it was only 10:30 am! While their food is always great, the staff could improve their customer service skills. Additionally, the seating area appeared dirty and could benefit from more frequent cleaning.

Picked up some treats for my GF friend! They loved them. The only issue is the online menu doesn't match the menu in the store. Soft pretzels aren't sold in the store anymore (you have to buy a pack of two frozen and heat them at home). It was busy but line moved fast! There are about 8 steps into the store with a railing. LGBTQ friendly.

Always cool to see a fully gluten-free establishment. Had a few vegan options as well - a couple of savory items and some desserts. Service was good. Cashier was very friendly. Definitely a tiny place, would plan on taking my food with me or eating quickly. There isn't much room to hang around.

I have always ordered here from doordash but never actually went. It's cute inside but not a lot of seating only about 4 chairs. The employees were nice and fast. I got the cheesecake and lemon bar but I have had the sandwiches, cupcakes, apple turnover, Yule log, tiramisu, vanilla donuts and probably some other things. I thought everything was good especially since I don't have a lot of options for gluten free baked goods. I have had hit or misses but overall I have loved every baked good. Only reason it's 4 stars is because I have had things I don't like but that could be my palette.

The bakery is dedicated gluten free. My mother has celiac and while I am not gluten free, I am aware of how most gluten free pastries can be gritty, dry, crumbly. Not here! The pastries were moist and decedent. My husband loved his and didn't even realize it was gluten free. Amazing!

A gluten free bakery with goods that don't taste gluten free?! Oh yes! Food: For breakfast, I devoured the vegan avocado toast - with bacon added - on a biscuit. It was delicious! I also took a chocolate croissant for later, which I've never seen gluten free; it was heavy and had a baking powder-like taste every few bites (maybe it's taste better warmed?). I did take a few bites of the cinnamon roll, which was much better. Service: Friendly, patient, and non judgmental as I oo'ed and aah'ed over too many choices! I took off a star because we didn't know there's no seating (which is tough for a tourist in the rain!), the chocolate croissant wasn't my favorite, and the dairy free options were very limited. On the last point, it's probably a blessing because I'd have come more often if that was the case! A wonderful find during this visit!

As a gal with celiac disease, this place is perfection to me. In my experience, it's been rare that a bakery also has sandwiches and more traditional lunch foods - so I LOVE that this place has sandwiches!! I got the pesto chicken sandwich and I scarfed it down and wanted another one. One of my other favorite baked goods was the croissant. LOVE!

On my last day of a long weekend in DC, my friend suggested this bakery for breakfast as I am gluten free. They live in Navy Yard so it was a bit of a hike but I don't have any gf bakeries near home so this was a worthy trek. Our first mission was to obtain breakfast sandwiches. I got the Fresh Start on an Everything bagel. It was pretty good, the bagel was a little dense and not crispy but I think it had more to do with the hummus and avocado weighing it down rather than the bagel itself. We walked around for a bit and returned at 12:01 to grab lunch and some goodies to go for the plane ride home. The sandwich was fantastic. Bread was soft, chicken and herb mayo tasty as well. That and the croissants I took held up well. I had a chocolate croissant the next morning and it was scrumptious. All in all Rise is very good, the staff were friendly but there is no seating so it is to-go only. Hope to bring my family back!

I love that there's a very cute and accessible gluten free bakery in Adams Morgan, but sadly I can't give it the endorsement that I was hoping to. First, the prices are sky high. DC is certainly a cupcake haven, and people are more than willing to dish out $5 or more for a single cupcake in Georgetown. But the $3.50 price point for these cupcakes is hard to justify considering the size and the taste. The sandwiches are also quite expensive. I ordered an eclair, tiramisu, and vanilla confetti cupcake. Sadly, I didn't enjoy any of the pastries. It isn't that a pastry needs gluten to be good--D'Light cafe down the street has amazing gluten free options. The pastries just tasted stale, a little burnt, and overly dense. After spending $15+ for three small mediocre pastries, I am sad that I can't endorse this place. But I love that it exists and I hope that with a couple small changes, it becomes a gluten free paradise!

Hands-down the best gluten-free bakery I have ever encountered. I was recently in DC on business and was looking all over for gluten-free items to eat and I found them online. They have the most incredible sandwiches and sweets and you will never even know you're eating gluten free.highly recommend it whether you are gluten-free or not very yummy

I love finding 100% gluten free bakeries! And when I do, I am not shy with my order. I found Rise on the Find Me Gluten Free app and went out of my way to work in a stop here during my overnight stay in DC. Parking is tricky around here, so I had my husband drop me off, swing around and pick me back up. The bakery is in a cute little row home type setup. Super clean and quaint when you walk in. No in-dining options at this time. The menu is amazing! So many bakery, dessert and lunch options to choose from. I ordered two grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches for our lunch. Then a bunch of other items to try: cinnamon roll, cheesecake, pumpkin roll and chocolate croissant. The pumpkin roll and cheesecake were my favorites, but everything was very very good. I am definitely going to make a habit of stopping here when I'm in the city.

Came here this morning for breakfast before walking over to the zoo. I've been to a number of gluten free bakeries and this is one of the better ones! The chocolate croissant was tasty. It's rare to find croissants that are gluten free because of how hard it is to get lamination/flakiness with gluten free flour. It was overall a bit dense but had the same great flavor of a regular buttery croissant with chocolate filling! As mentioned in other reviews, the outside of the bagels are a bit tough/chewy but they are surprisingly light on the inside. They were well toasted and crispy. They also offer vegan or regular cream cheese options Would definitely return when in the area!

My go to for breakfast is the "mom knows best" which is pretty much a normal salmon bagel. For lunch the "Monica " panini is my go to, this is a pesto chicken sandwich. Both of them are great. No complaints on the actually quality of the food. I am celiac so having a place this good in my neighborhood is honestly something I'm super grateful about. With that said, know when you come here that your going to spend around $12-15 minimum. It's delicious and worth it but not cheap.

Goodness gracious. How is it that I've never left a review? Let's get to it! When the feeling takes me and I need a good baked good,I wake up before 7am (bc it's an hour away from me)and head into DC to the only place that will give me what I've been craving. I usually grab a few bagels, a chocolate croissant and - if they have it - a scone. It's always worth it to me. I have a few yummy things to choose from when I head to work each morning and I feel like a human. Who doesn't love a good bagel or a pastry?! I have - ALWAYS. Especially growing up in New York City. The fact that I could no longer eat gluten had me depressed until I found this place. The bagel taste CONSISTENCY is the best I've found so far. Thank you all for existing! See you soon!

Rise Bakery has been a GF bakery oasis for a long time. Once a year, I make it over there on baked goods that I don't make myself such as their chocolate croissant. Very good for a GF product. They have really nice service. With two tables, it is a takeout place.

Needed to catch an amtrak back to NYC after spending a couple of days in DC with my friends and luckily we found Rise Bakery was located pretty closely to our Airbnb from Dupont circle. We walked to Rise and they were open pretty early around 9am! I ordered the Classic Sandwich and added avocado spread. The bagel had a good ratio to egg to bread and was very tasty on the everything bagel. It's so great how they have a selection of bagels and sweets and everything is gluten free!! My friend is gluten free and she also ordered banana bread which was sweet and moist. I usually am not a fan of gluten free desserts, but you can't tell at all! I also really liked the ambiance of the place. The staff was very welcoming and they had a post-it wall where you could write encouraging messages and show your support. Rise Bakery is in a great location and have fair prices and variety of foods. Overall, I would recommend Rise Bakery to someone who is in a pinch to get a filling breakfast in on the go and looking for somewhere glutenfree.

It was my first time at this bakery. I haven't had a cinnamon roll in years because of gluten. I enjoyed other tasty treats. I enjoyed everything that I ate!

As a fellow person with celiac I love this place the cannoli's and eclairs are so good some of the things are vegan and unlike some vegan pastries it does not taste like cardboard and still tastes like regular pastries. Over all so good highly recommend

Honestly I was super disappointed with Rise. I thought I was walking into a Gluten Free haven, we got many things to try. Wife got a panini, I got a bagel and egg sandwich and a variety of assorted sweet baked goods came home. Over all, the baked goods ranged from dry to inedible (cinnamon roll). The sandwiches were decent, but we spent a small fortune here and having to throw anything out is a travesty!

Love the turnovers, sandwiches, bagels, cupcakes...you really can't go wrong here! Some menu items are better than others, but I've never been unhappy. I wish it was a tiny bit cheaper so I could justify it on a more regular basis, but I don't mind paying more for baked goods I can eat safely. The convenience is also priceless!

Gluten free...I got the ham and cheese croissant and it was buttery and dense and delicious! Well worth the walk if you are in the area.

Was craving a cinnamon roll that wouldn't totally destroy me given my gluten insensitivity- and wanted some cookies to take to a HH later that everyone could enjoy. Didn't have time to run to the store so DoorDash to the rescue ! Ordered a cinnamon roll - a six pack of vegan gluten free chocolate chip cookies - & a loaf of gluten free multigrain bread. Everything was tasty and I REALLY appreciated the vegan gluten free cookies!! Dinging one star because the bread is good but didn't quit hit the spot :). I've made GF bread from scratch myself so am picky :) great spot !

this review is for the service I received today. I ordered the Big Day from the breakfast menu which lists avocado as one of the ingredients. While my sandwich was being made, I noticed the preparer spreading avocado on the sandwich. I then asked which type of avocado came on the sanswich and was told it was a spread. then asked to have sliced avocado instead. the woman making the sandwich didn't appear to understand or looked like she didn't want to change the sandwich. Either way, when I sit down to eat my sandwich I noticed the avocado spread was just wiped off and I had not been given a new bagel. this was interesting to me because I would have paid for a new bagel if needed if I knew the avocado spread would just be wiped off leaving a more soggy bagel. I'm also realizing on the second half of the sandwich the avocado spread was not even wiped of ‍ I've been here several times and this time I did not have good service unfortunately.

I recently became gluten free omg the ham and cheese croissant was just like a gluten filled one. Amazing!!!! Cannot wait to have the Asiago cheese bagel when I get back to California!!! Update- the Asiago cheese bagels are not transportable. They remained very hard and never soften and thus I spend $11 for nothing. Very disappointed.

First of all, thank you for providing a gluten-free facility! Had items from Rise delivered to me via DoorDash while I was staying in DC. Just a note for Rise, neither time did the Dasher follow the delivery instructions, so there were definitely delivery issues with both orders, including one order being completely lost. Door Dash refused to do anything to help me about it. So if you're ordering via Door Dash, just know that as a heads up. The food itself is amazing. The gluten-free biscuit is probably the best gluten-free biscuit I've ever had. I also ordered scones, a cupcake, croissant, and the brioche. Super tasty, gluten-free goods. Next time, I'm gonna have to stay in a hotel closer to Rise, so I can go there in person!

No seating here--just one small bench for waiting for your order. Service is great. Baked goods were not as great as I was hoping, but hard to find so many gluten and dairy free options. Had a good panini.

Rise is a good gluten free bakery. You could even say they rise to the occasion. Outside of being dedicated gluten free, the lunch items don't stand out and just fit the build. Nothing to write home about except that it's dedicated gluten free.

Stopped in today and as usual, cheerful, knowledgeable, and authentic service. The employees are always so happy to share about new items, and I love that! Picked up a couple treats and some items for a new to DC celiac. Had the pistachio cream puff on the way home and OMG. Employees were not kidding on how tasty it was, with actual pistachio flavor! I just love that Rise is continuing to survive and still innovating. Super friendly and kind staff are also so refreshing, especially in a tough climate to work in food service. Something is so right about Rise.

Daughter and I dropped in here to check it out and walked away with two pastries and some challah. They had a nice selection of breads and a small case of pastries both savory and sweet. It was busy even for a Monday afternoon and a number of the frozen breads were already sold out. My DD got the chocolate éclair and I got the Nutella brownie. The chocolate and custard in the éclair were amazing. The shell was very good for a GF version, it was a bit heavier than a G éclair but she was happy. The brownie was fabulous. It had a fudge like consistency a think layer of Nutella and walnuts on top. It was really too rich to eat in one sitting. And yes., I could not help myself and ate the whole darn thing. I did puzzle on why not hazelnuts on top, but the walnuts did help cut the richness. We haven't cut into the challah yet. Hoping up make French toast with that tomorrow. I hear they are opening one in Sterling,VA soon. Yay !!

Still kicking out some tasty stuff here. I think the gluten-free croissant has improved. And their blueberry muffin continues to be light and lovely. Pricing is up there, but Rise is a specialized bakery--so that goes with the territory. Their baked goods make life a lot easier for those with food restrictions. I find the counter staff to be competent.

Bakeries are increasingly catering to restricted diets. If you need dairy and gluten free you can get these in a bake shop. Rise Bakery is one of these. It's nice to have selection for many who don't have bakeries to choose from. The prices are mostly ok. I like picking up a few things for breakfast. It's also good for desserts. They have a small location next to Amsterdam Falafel. It has just one table where you can eat. This is a pick up and go kind of place. I think the prices are pretty good because it's a specialty bakery. The single serving items seem to be about $3 or so. I like the energy bar. They also can make cakes and bigger items. Bakeries can be good for breakfast or desserts. If you need something to be gluten free or vegan for either you can get it here. This is the only such bakery in DC that I'm aware of.

I was happy to find some GF treats available and they are on the delivery apps, which is great. We tried the cheesecake, the Nutella brownie, and the tiramisu -- all were OK, but don't think I would order them again. The cookies were good. The one thing I really liked and would order again is the ham & cheese croissant. Really good. Not light like a typical croissant, but super tasty. I look forward to trying the pizza and sandwiches.

We were in Washington DC for an event. I always look for gluten free bakeries when I'm in a new town. Rise Bakery was recommended on Yelp so I gave it a try. 1. the website was well designed and easy to navigate 2. you can order in advance and pick up on a chosen date and time - This was great. When we got to the store there was a line of 8 people. I walked up, got my order and left! 3. In addition to bakery sweets, they offer savory croissants and breakfast sandwiches So far we have tried the breakfast sandwiches, ham & cheese croissants, cinnamon rolls, and peanut butter cookies. The croissants are amazing!! Make sure you order extra! The bagels are tough. This made the breakfast sandwiches hard to eat. It's a shame because the filling was very good - salmon, pickled onions, tomato, and avocado! Maybe get it on one of their buns instead of a bagel. The cinnamon roll was very good. Great cinnamon flavor and not too much icing. The peanut butter cookies are ok. They taste like a cross between a butter cookie and peanut butter - the peanut flavor seems muted. They are thin and crispy if that is what you like. It is one of the better gluten free bakeries I have been to.

Exciting to get gluten free treats! Their chocolate croissants and ham & cheese are pretty good, at least compared to other gluten free ones, and their sandwiches are solid. My only complaint is that the sandwiches (ESPECIALLY breakfast sandos) need more seasoning, even just salt and pepper would help them. But so much more could be done with spices, herbs, aioli, vinegar etc. Gf food doesn't need to be unseasoned!

Everything I bought (Ham & Cheese Croissant, Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookie 6-pack, jalapeño cheddar buns, double chocolate cupcake, and mocha cupcake) was DELICIOUS! The guy I was dating was gluten intolerant so he was super happy to have found this gem! It is my now my favorite bakery in the DMV and will be returning whenever I'm in the Adams Morgan area!

Recently placed an order for vegan chocolate chip cookies. The cookies were dry and hard -- tasted like they had been on the shelf too long. I've had these same cookies here before and remember them being slightly more chewy and less dry. Not sure if they changed the recipe. I also ordered the Belmont which was pretty tasty. It's a vegan and gf sandwich filled with veggies and a savory sauce. If you order the whole, it's basically two small sandwiches wrapped together. The bread was not very good though. For a bakery, you'd think their gluten free and dairy free bread would taste better. I've definitely had better gfdf bread. There aren't a lot of gluten and dairy free options in Dc so I will probably order from them again when I am craving a treat. But they can up their game.

I found this place when I search vegan bakery. Place is small,in the warm day air conditioning didn't work,vegan selection was very limited by stacks of cookies and apple turnover. Honestly, I don't think that as a regular bakery their variety was great as well. I got a vegan apple turnover and it wasn't good,not horrible or hazardous,but just not yummy. Dry,not sweet,small and disappointing for the 5 dollars. Don't think I will be back soon.

This place gets five stars for just existing! I find it amazing that a bakery would be 100% gluten-free. On our first visit, we decided to pick up a healthy sample of sandwiches, pastries and bagels to take back home. They were all delicious. Will definitely be a repeat customer.

Ok so the staff is super nice and it's a cool little place but WOW was that biscuit dry. Yikes!

One of the things I missed when going gluten free was a breakfast ham and cheese croissant. Imagine my surprise when I saw them at Rise!! I was visiting the city and got a few over the course of two weeks. They are very good but have to be eaten while warm. I also tried the cheesecake with raspberry sauce and it was fantastic. I'll be spending some time in Washington this summer so I will try some different options.

This is the best gluten free pastry in DC. I like their Raspberry Danish, chocolate Eclair, and the scone. All the food and everything are Gluten Free. I would recommend it for people with Celiac.

Biscuits. Amazing. I bought them fresh. They were all delicious. The frozen bagels, not good. Why weren't they good? I don't know how this is possible, I can only assume they have an animal problem because the frozen bagels smell of animal urine. I purchased two bags of bagels and wow. Completely inedible. Compared to the price of regular gluten bagels, these aren't cheap. There aren't a lot of choices for gluten-free in the area, but that doesn't mean I have to eat gf bagels that smell of animal urine. I hope you guys get this fixed.

The cheesecake is amazing! No really! Came for breakfast then my child wanted lunch. They had us wait an hour, when no was around. We enjoyed the food. Positive, it was gluten free.

Gosh I wanted so badly to love this place. I have celiacs and I also have some culinary/event catering experience so I was excited when I read about the passion of the owner and saw how many items were on their menu. We were having a late breakfast and I ordered a variety of things so I could try a few different preparations. I got a chocolate croissant, vanilla donut and a cinnamon roll. To start, the employee did not offer to warm up our croissants (my hubby got one as well). And other than a hello , it was awkward silence. Now to the pastries. The croissants are so dense I just couldn't believe it. And without warming, they were hard as a rock and the chocolate was just a chalky piece of baking chocolate. We didn't eat either of them. The vanilla donut had a crazy sweet frosting, (although the crumb was fairly moist for gluten free), and it was a very salty cake. As a matter of fact, everything we ordered was insanely salty for pastry. But, the worst was the cinnamon roll. I wanted it to be the winner of the day and it definitely wasn't. The frosting is bazaar. It's not cream cheese and it's not royal icing, it's butter. Its not sweet in the slightest. It's whipped so much that it leaves a film of fat on your tongue and it's butter. It's salty, savory and would have tasted better on a bagel or toast. Did I say it was butter? Awful. The pastry was thinner than croissants which was nice and it had caramelization on the outer layer, but zero cinnamon flavor and again, salty as all get out, with no gooey goodness between the layers and super savory in flavor. By the end of our tasting (back in our hotel room) I was so hungry that I just went with the donut because it was the only thing that was edible and I couldn't help thinking that if they make this super sweet donut glaze, then why no sugar in or on the cinnamon roll? I was hoping to go back and pick up breads to take home with us and now I'm not going back and would never recommend this to anyone quite frankly, celiacs or not. I've had better pastries at home gluten free and although the food does feel/look professional....if it doesn't taste good than it doesn't really matter! Almost everything went in the trash. Insanely disappointed and my mouth still tastes like salty fat. Wow.
