How the Tiny Maryland Town of Easton Grew Into a Culinary Hotbed | Eater DC

"Rise Up is a homegrown coffee chain where locals—including camo-clad fowlers—trade duck calls over buckets of iced coffee, and its “Organic Maryland Coffee” is now even sold at Whole Foods." - John Besche

Google
Excellent customer service, the employees are so kind. Food is always great. I love getting cold brews with various flavors. They are never watered down which I appreciate. This is my first time getting food in a while, and they have gluten free tortillas now?!?! And they're so good! Unlike many gluten free tortillas I have tried. I am so appreciative they have this option!

Google
It’s a Shame this is the closest rise up to my house. Because you have about a 50% chance of getting your order correct. It’s incredible that someone’s main job requirement is to just make a cup of coffee. There could be no line or wait at the counter. Still take 15 minutes to get your coffee. And apparently can’t read the directions on the cup to make it correctly.

Google
We love this busy little neighborhood coffee & breakfast spot. We love their breakfast burritos! With all the options you can order it exactly how you want it. Delicious. I recommend The Local + refried beans. We also love The Rise Up burrito.

Google
Iced coffee with caramel was amazing! My tongue was dancing with happiness! Friendly’s staff. They let us have a sample of a drink. All around good place!

Amber D.

Google
Stopped for a snack and was really impressed. The green tea was made perfect with just the right amount of honey and the carrot cake muffin with cream cheese filling is amazing. The price was even better.

Google
We drive an hour from home to get burritos here. My favorite is the rise up, absolutely delicious. Also really like the blended drinks. Plus it's a cool place shop with nice staff.

Google
I absolutely love Rise Up but will go out of my way to go to a different location than Bay Dale. Can’t understand how they continue to do nothing about the service time. Order ahead or walk in, 630am or 9am, it still takes over 20 minutes (and that’s being generous) to get a coffee and absolutely no one on staff appears to care. I’ve had one of my two drinks ready five minutes before the second. Hot food comes out before drinks. And if you are in line and hold the door open to remain in line, expect to be scolded instead of them moving more efficiently.

Google
Its always crowded, but that's a good thing. Its also for good reason, the service, food, and beverages are just so good. I end up here once a week when I make a personal trip to the Annapolis area and it really gives me a reason to... Rise Up that day. Their burritos are excellent, the Cinnamon Toast Cruch Latte is my go to, and the service and team there are always Friendly and nice enough to ask about allergies when necessary.

Yelp
I really love coming here. It's a little bit on the pricey end of the spectrum for coffee, but the staff is super friendly and on top of things. They brew their own coffee and have pastries from local shops (shout out to local legend Carlson's Donuts) and even have a solid selection of sandwiches for lunch or breakfast. I opted for a cinnamon bun to go with my iced latte because I had a little sweet tooth -- it hit the spot. On the downside, if you go to this location, there's limited seating and the wait for coffee can be pretty intense during morning rushes or the weekends. Took like 15 minutes for a cappuccino and an iced latte... not a total dealbreaker given the quality of service and the fact that it's a homegrown business, but still a little annoying especially if you're in a rush... still thousands of times better than Starbucks.

Yelp
I have determined that the chorizo breakfast burrito is the best in the state of MD. So good. I order mine without avocado. Perfection every time.

Yelp
I've ordered here a handful of times whenever I'm in the area. My coffee of choice is a medium french vanilla iced latte. I've tried their burritos, breakfast sandwiches, tots, and breakfast potatoes. The burritos are hearty. They definitely don't skimp out on the fixings inside. My favorites are the local burrito and the Rise Up burrito. I enjoy their breakfast sandwiches, but prefer to get it on bread other than their biscuit. I'm not a fan of their biscuits (or biscuits in general). The breakfast potatoes are decent. I love their tots, and you can customize them with sauces and/or meats if you're feeling spunky. I like that you're able to customize (add and leave out) your item to get exactly what you want. You are charged extra for add-ons. I deducted a star because there have been several times where something has been left out of my order or something is wrong with my order. I usually order online and take it home, so I don't know something is wrong until later. I've had the flavoring left out of my coffee (twice), the wrong bread on my sandwich, avocado and other items that cost extra left out of my burrito or sandwich. The staff is always welcoming and friendly whenever I'm in. The sandwiches and burritos can get pricey if you add on items, but everything is made to order and fresh. I usually order online for pickup inside. Pickup orders are on the back counter. When the store gets crowded, people tend to stand in front of the pick up counter, so you'll have to ask them to move out of the way to see the names on the bags. When you order online, you accrue points for various free items or add ons. One thing I did want to note is that tipping is mandatory when ordering through their website (or at least it has been for me). You can chose the percentage you want to leave, but there's no way to un-click the tip option. I prefer to tip in cash when I go to pick up my orders, but through the website is fine as well. I just wanted to mention it. The only negative for carryout is that the food sweats in the containers they use, so by the time you get to your destination, your food can be soggy and stick to the paper they use. Overall, I enjoy their food and customer service. I wouldn't hesitate to return if I'm in the area again.

Yelp
Was visiting with some friends in the area and mentioned I was going to get some coffee from Starbucks and they quickly redirected me to Rise Up. It was my first time being there and it was a really nice and inviting space. The staff were really friendly and answered all my questions. I got an Iced Latte for myself and picked up a Frozen Chai for my friend. The latte was good and next time I am in the area I will try one of their other drinks.

Sam L.

Yelp
The food is fresh and delicious, the coffee is always fresh and literally amazing! You can't get any better around the Arnold area. Service is amazing! They are all so friendly and welcoming and just make such a nice atmosphere. Very accepting and kind and amazing people.

Yelp
The ambience, service, and coffee were amazing. Stopped at Highs to get coffee and I asked if they had a non-dairy creamer (as it is 2024) and the cashier said, "Go to Rise Up," (a mile away). Glad I did!

Michelle J.

Yelp
I visit her a few times a week. THe coffee and ambiance is good. Staff attentive and quick even during high volume periods. My one pet peeve is staff ( Annapolis Town Center ) location continues to allow dogs of all types into the store. I saw an older lady very petite come in with a pitbull and seem to have a very tenuous hold on the animal. A Saturdays ago, a lady had a dog in a carry-all that she eventually took out and placed on the bench allowing the dog to lick food off the table. When the couple moved outside, no attempt was made to wipe the table down. Shortly after, another group sat at the table and proceeded to put their food on it. This afternoon, a lady came in with a big beautiful dog who proceeded to shake and wiggle releasing a crap ton of dog hair. Not everyone is UNAFRAID of dogs. Animals carry germs and diseases and some of us are allergic!! A sign that dogs are not allowed is should be considered. Maryland code allow for service and emotional support dogs in food establishments and I don't think you comply. Please create a dog post for customers to attach dogs to OUTSIDE. A grateful customer.

Yelp
This is one of the smaller locations for Rise Up. So yes, at times there is a line, but it is WELL worth the wait. All items at Rise Up taste amazing, however, if this is your first time visiting or if you have not yet tried the Coffee Smoothie, DO IT. It is literally the drink that made Rise Up famous. Please do yourself a favor and ADD A BANANA. The frozen chai is also a great go-to option but I like to make mine a dirty version (two shots of espresso). Must try food items would be the Happy Cow Burrito (vegan), the breakfast sandwich and the acai bowl. I am displeased with the complaints below from fellow Yelpers on service. For someone who has been a customer here for three years, I have NEVER had a bad experience. Not once. Each and every day I visit, staff members are smiling, happy and kind. They ask the right questions at the cash wrap and are even willing to remake anything that doesn't taste up to your standards. So DON'T you dare complain if you're to much of a whimp to ask for something to be fixed--THEY AREN'T MIND READERS. Get ahold of yourself and get caffeinated. #eyeroll

Yelp
If this place is dead you can pop in and get a cup of coffee in a reasonable amount of time. When certain members of the staff are working you will have to wait until all the sidebar conversations run there course behind the counter. The clerk will make small talk behind the register w a customer, totally fine totally professional, but several of the other employees will overhear comments and get distracted and jump in on the conversation. When you're fifth or sixth in line watching this over and over again as time ticks by you gotta ask if the juice is worth the squeeze. Is the coffee that's expensive worth the wait they create on busier distracted days. Sounds petty but it's been the same experience so many times I felt compelled to finally comment on it. I like the hot sauces they sell here.

Yelp
I know it's a coffee shop but you would think with BayDel gone they could up their breakfast sandwiches the bead sucks

Yelp
Really enjoyed my iced white chocolate mocha!! Would be a repeat visitor! Price was reasonable! Barista was very friendly and patient!

Yelp
I feel like I've had Rise Up coffee before but I've never been to a location. This spot was packed! Staff were so patient and kind. Iced americano was perfect! The breakfast burrito was fantastic, although it did slow me down because I waited a bit for it but honestly with it!

Yelp
This place was absolutely awesome. I didn't expect much from their açaí bowl but it was probably the best one I have ever had. I can't wait to go back and get another one. My partner loves açaí bowls and I really hope he's impressed.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop! I'm brand new to Arnold and they welcomed me and my dog in. The espresso is amazing as was the simple and delicious strawberry smoothie. Can't wait to come back!

E B.

Yelp
Excellent coffee! Our favorites are iced lattes, and their amazing coffee smoothies! Also, you can get a great breakfast here too. And, you can get a bowl (easily 3- to 4-times the amount of food as the other guys' egg bites, and truly prepared while you wait, not just reheated stuff) if you want to leave off the wheat/gluten. They're not cheap, but they are excellent!

Yelp
Warning: New obsessed fan of Rise Up coffee! I've been to 3 locations (Market St, Annapolis and Arnold). Each location has been excellent and you can't go wrong! Why I am a new fan: 1. Check out the website and read the mission on Rise Up! I love love the co-op idea and giving back to coffee roasters 2. Excellent yummy coffee! As a new MD resident, I feel like I am giving back to the state as I get caffeinated 3. All the staff is so so nice! Must be the good coffee beans? 4. Cafes are nice and good place to sit, if the place is not crowded. 5. Serves food but I still need to try! Oh! My son did have a donut and loved loved it! Didn't share with me! Request for Rise Up management: can you build a super big cafe in Crofton MD, one where people can enjoy coffee and sit down to chat and work? Thanks, newbie fan

Yelp
Bottom Line: A welcoming coffee shop serving coffee drinks, smoothies, pastries, egg sandwiches and awesome burritos. Well, now that I have realized my husband and I are Rise Up addicts I decided I should update my review for the new-ish Arnold location in the Bay Dale Shopping Center! We are huge fans of their drip coffees and Rise Up burritos. They offer several different types of burritos but the signature Rise Up is our favorite consisting of eggs, chopped chorizo, potato and avocado snuggly wrapped in a pressed tortilla with a side of salsa verde. Since moving to the area from San Diego I thought my breakfast burrito days were behind my but I was wrong! I really like how Rise Up chops the chorizo so that it is not overpowering. Regarding the coffee, we often just get it with a touch of sugar and whole milk but lately I've been going the seasonal route with pumpkin and gingerbread syrup. The coffee is really good so as festive as the seasonal stuff is, I think I'm going to revert back to a simpler coffee. I recently learned that we can order in advance at orderriseup.com and I hope they are developing an app to support my habit! The employees are always friendly and I just want to give another shout out to Rise Up for opening and safely operating during a pandemic!

Yelp
Great little coffee place with outdoor seating. Fast service, gender neutral bathrooms. There's a little bowl for dogs outside so you can bring your pooch :)

Yelp
If you're in Arnold and looking for a quick coffee stop, here you go! Rise up never disappoints. The staff is so welcoming and friendly. You can even buy merch by the front desk area. They offer indoor and outdoor seating as well as many food options. This coffee shop has everything you need to fuel your day.

Yelp
Update (From 5 Star to 2): We were really impressed with Rise Up after their opening. They had a really great team, specifically Taylor. However, there have been numerous issues with Rise Up in recent months, which aren't to be overlooked (especially when you consider their made to order food prices are almost if not equally as expensive as other sit-down places). I have not had a made to order food item made correctly. I think I've ordered five or six times from them; from ordering a bagel and cream cheese that came with no cream cheese (?????), to ordering a burrito bowl sans tortilla (you know, in a bowl, as an option on their menu) but came as a burrito I didn't want, to ordering a fried egg (also a menu item) that consistently comes as scrambled. When you pay $10 for a burrito bowl, as I did today, and I got a wrapped burrito with the wrong items inside... boy, it really irks me. Also a word to the wise: don't even bother with their online ordering option. It was phenomenal at first! You would order, have a timeframe within 15-20 minutes to pick up and viola! However, their times became longer and longer; from 15-20 to 30 to 45 and today an hour! ONE HOUR! My food (which was made incorrectly) was done before my coffee. I wasted another $16 at this place again today. If you give them your cash, make sure to check your order entirely before exiting and don't bother going in peak hours, which is apparently 6-11 am unless you want to wait an hour for something that's likely going to come to you incorrectly.

Kristen L.

Yelp
Rise up has the best avocado toast! Coffee and lemonade are delicious as well. Baristas are always so nice and work quickly yet accurately to keep the line moving.

Yelp
I don't know how this place doesn't have more negative reviews. I'm all about a local business, but we have been here 20+ times and every single time the service is horrible. This place is always crowded, so I don't know why it isn't staffed properly. I know staffing is difficult for small businesses right now, but hiring doesn't seem like the problem here. We've witnessed the line out the door and the orders backed up and they had someone restocking tshirts. Online order pickup time is irrelevant. We ordered at 9:45am with a pickup time at 10:10am. We arrived and our food was ready, but no drinks. We ate our entire breakfast outside before our drinks were finally ready at 10:40am. We've also been and ordered at the counter. We've witnessed during an extremely busy morning what seemed like a manager stop making drinks to switch the song on the playlist multiple times. Another time, on a slow Sunday at 3 pm, we waited 20 minutes for iced coffee from a spout because they only had two people working and it looked like one of the employees was on frozen drink duty which doesn't make any sense. Such a bummer because we live within walking distance and the food and coffee always taste great. But I just can't justify the bad service.

Yelp
Stopped in last weekend to grab breakfast and a coffee to go. I'm a big Rise Up fan and frequent the Annapolis location. I was asked to wait outside because of the crowd waiting inside to collect online orders, which I appreciated. When I got to order I was surprised that they have a more limited food menu at this location (totally on me I didn't check, just pulled up the regular Mad Eggs menu). I impulse ordered two bacon, egg and cheese biscuits as result. The bacon was amazing on these sandwiches and the cheddar was really great too. I wasn't a huge fan of the biscuit, it wasn't very big and I have no way to explain this but it just didn't taste like a biscuit, more like a roll? I'm absolutely looking forward to the next visit so we can try the burritos though. Excited this spot is pretty close to our neighborhood!

Stephen F.

Yelp
We had a variety of breakfast yummies yesterday morning. Fruit and the different burritos were aweome. Bacon was delicious too. I never knew you all served food until my son brought over a feast. We will be headed back for sure!
google avatar

Helia S.

Yelp
Jesus god! Waiting 20mins for a goddam coffee has been added to my life experiences. I had to tell them twice and by the time coffee was ready my food was cold
google avatar

Kaiti C.

Yelp
The food and coffee here are delicious, and the ability to customize your order is really nice. Online ordering is a cinch, and the service has been very friendly and accommodating. If you're in a rush, I definitely recommend ordering ahead of time, as things are made fresh. Love this place!
google avatar

Patty H.

Yelp
We are never disappointed when we get bagels, egg sandwiches, or coffee. However, I don't believe the staff has ever tasted the hot chocolate. It is a little better than water, and has no flavor. This has consistently been the issue. That being said, I suppose we will still come here, but never for the hot chocolate. Perhaps it should be taken off the menu.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
I want to like this place since I recently moved to the area and it would be an ideal go-to coffee joint. We went once and the coffee was ok and the bagels, well, they gave them to us dry. No spreads at all. Of course we didn't look until we got home. willing to try again, but right now it's just Meh...

S M.

Yelp
Coffee is good and I love their vegan food options. Açaí bowls are fire. My partner loves their chocolate coffee banana Frappuccino.

Tyler F.

Yelp
Skip the thirty minute wait and go to Blue Rooster! Don't bother ordering online... Staff here will completely bypass any sort of order system and make walk in drinks and food while you wait a half hour for your drink. This happens every time we come here but this will be the last. Other locations are not like this but this store in particular has little to no time/order management. Our two drinks tasted great though.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
The locally roasted coffee is amazing, and the special blends they have to purchase to take home are incredible.
google avatar

Erinn H.

Yelp
Glad they are finally in the neighborhood!!Lattes and (what they are known for) coffee smoothies are the best in MARYLAND.. Hands down!!

Christine R.

Yelp
I liked City Dock MUCH MUCH more, but not at the end when the owners let it go downhill. I did like the coffee smoothie but the sweetner in it was one to many pumps. Rise up foods (Mad Eggs they say - I wonder if that's a different business/profit center) selection is limited. I looked for a bagel this monring and only one kind is available online- Everything. I don't like that. No plain even as a second choice. The biscut is ok but nothing outstanding. I've ordered it 2x w/ egg and cheese (once they got the egg wrong fried not scrambled and one of the 2x the sausuage had a hard corner). I am not a biscuit lover and was looking to see if they offered an English Muffin. Nope. I'm looking again this morning and nothing there is really appealing. No scones. No bagel choices. No biscotti. No peanut butter toast. Avacado toast on 9 grain isn't for me. and for the record - 2 stars in noted Yelp as "Meh, I've experienced better" which is exactly how I feel here.
google avatar

Ern F.

Yelp
Wait times for in-person are bordering on 30min and 45min for online ordering. Iced coffee is great but it's getting harder and harder to commit to coming in. I hope they are working on this and can be successful!

Saving T.

Yelp
Great food and ambiance. They have many muffin choices. They also offer smoothies and açaí bowls which are a favorite:)
google avatar

Flash C.

Yelp
Great place to start your day. Friendly staff, clean and vibrant with a modern millennial design. At times it's a bit of a wait for food and drink due to how busy they get, but well staffed with workers who are knocking out coffee, lattes, espressos. Then there's more people in the back cooking the food. I do miss the City Dock Coffee name - it was sad to see that previous business decline and die off. Now this place was able to "Rise" from the ashes...
google avatar

Michaele C.

Yelp
Super clean, awesome staff, and the best coffee in town!!! Perfect staple to the neighborhood!

Why N.

Yelp
This was once a nice coffee shop, but on more than one occasion now I have stood for nearly 30minutes waiting for a black cold brew coffee, very easy to make coffee... I don't know if I'm not local enough or hipster enough for timely service, but I watched the line fill up more than once and people get their orders while I waited for the easiest order they could fill. Now that this has happened multiple times, I will never spend my money her again. It seemed like a nice place when I moved here but service has greatly declined!

Adella R.

Yelp
My favorite coffee place! Wish they were closer to where I live now. I used to drive 30 minutes just to get their coffee when I lived closer. Whenever I'm in Annapolis though I always stop here :)
google avatar

HG T.

Yelp
BRUH!!!! I go to Rise up all the time with my friends and people from my youth group. It's such a friendly place. Everyone's so nice and kind. And their drinks.....DA BOMB!! If you haven't been to Rise Up yet you gotta go there. And they follow COVID cdc guidelines very well. Be safe! and get yourself some Rise Up!!
google avatar

Lydia O.

Yelp
Took over 40 minutes to get a cup of coffee. Got into the line outside (which was unclear and disorganized) and waited 20+ minutes to order. The workers were very nonchalant. It took 17 minutes from the time I ordered to receive my drink--which was just a large latte. The coffee at Rise Up is delicious but this experience makes it far from worth it. Very disappointing.

Fanny P.

Yelp
I'm posting this review in hopes that it helps them reorganize their system. I really enjoy their food and coffee but that online ordering system needs to change. I totally understand how busy a Saturday morning at a coffee shop is but this is the second time in a row that I ordered food and coffee and the food was ready 45 minutes before the coffee. There were tons of other people waiting for their online orders. One guy was there at 10:00 waiting for and order that was supposed to be ready at 9:30 then another woman walks in, grabs her food and says her order was supposed to be ready at 10:20 and it's only 10:00 but they immediately make her drinks in front of all of the other people who were waiting and who's orders were probably supposed to be ready before her. So then people start frantically asking about their orders rightfully so. Just a chaotic mess. Maybe they need to hire more people to work on the online orders on a Saturday. I'm not sure but I would definitely recommend avoiding online order on a weekend. Great food and drinks so I hope they fix up these issues! :-)

Karen B.

Yelp
First and last time! I waited almost 30 min for a bagel and cream cheese. Fruit smoothie eh had better and cheaper. Bagel had barely any cream cheese on it. And that too had better!

Lea S.

Yelp
I love this place! I especially love that they do not charge extra to add a flavor to your coffee drink. Based on the taste and the ability to add flavor without an up charge, they have totally beat out Starbucks! I used to think Starbucks is the best, but Rise Up is so much better, no comparison! I also love that they enforce mask wearing! I highly recommend Rise Up!

Liz F.

Yelp
I wouldn't go here if it wasn't so convenient. Two stars because when my order is right it is good. However, the charges are insane (extra 50 cents for a slice of tomato, $1 for a squirt of peanut butter) and then most of the time they don't even add it! The employees aren't rude, but they aren't friendly either. I have been going minimum 3 times a week since they opened and never a kind greeting. The quality is hit or miss...sometimes phenomenal sometimes just the worst. And they NEVER read a note if you do an online order! I'll add there should be more options on the online orders for simple things like put over ice or light on syrup, but there isn't so I type it in and NEVER get what I ask for. I don't know if it just doesn't come through their end or if they just don't bother to read. I don't mind paying extra if the food/coffee is worth it, but it's just not. I would literally never go if I didn't have a tiny child and a caffeine addiction and there was another option. The coffee is good, the flavors are good, and when the food is done right it's good I'll give them that. But you never know. The employees seem to do the bare minimum and once again for the price it just is ridiculous. Lower your prices or improve your services.

Emily E.

Yelp
We have always been a fan of Rise Up and are ecstatic to have it here in Arnold! We order online from here multiple times a week and are never disappointed. Yes, some days the wait time for online orders is a little lengthy, but they hardly ever take the full time. Plan a little ahead and you will be fine - it is worth the wait!

Jackie S.

Yelp
I have been here twice this week. The first time I was sitting outside on their patio and I noticed the employees kept coming outside with people's online pickup orders. I thought to myself: that's great I'm going to do an online order sometime. Today, I placed my online order and patiently waited outside while they made it. Fifteen minutes later I received a text message that my order was ready. I waited outside in front of the door for someone to bring it outside. Ten more minutes pass. I call them to ask about my order. No answer. I finally go inside and ask about it and the lady working rudely told me that they don't deliver it outdoors. So now my drink had been sitting there for fifteen minutes and was completely melted. I have to say that I am disappointed that they did not deliver my drink outside. I don't understand why one day they would bring pickup orders outside and today they didn't. The whole intention of ordering online for me was to avoid going into the store due to Covid.
