Yelp
Based upon an attempt for weekday lunch.
I would have liked to review this restaurant, but unfortunately, my appearance was not sufficient to be seated on Monday at 1415, with 6 seats occupied in the restaurant, 45 minutes before seating ended for lunch service.
This surprised me, because the first question I asked the server who greeted me was: "I don't have a reservation. Is a jacket required to be seated for lunch?" - because I was not wearing a suit jacket.
The server informed me that a jacket would not be required and began to lead me to a table, but was called over by a man wearing the traditional white double breasted chef jacket, standing in the back of the main dining room. I assume he was the chef, because I would never allow any of my subordinates to stand around during dinner prep time in full view of the public completely unoccupied.
When the server returned, unfortunately, I was unable to be seated. I understand. This and every private restaurant in the world has the absolute right to refuse service to anyone at anytime for any reason. The chef wouldn't want me to be seen enjoying the food if the men and women from Gault Millau or Michelin stopped for an inspection - I'm sure they notice those things.
In all fairness, the server offered to reccomend other options for lunch before I left.
Yesterday, while wearing an almost similar outfit, L'escalier, over at Brüsseler Str. 11, was kind enough to seat me for lunch, although I had arrived with only 30 minutes remaining in service. They have a yelp page.
Perhaps Alfredo can resolve this problem in the future by posting at the restaurant and in advertising: reservations required, jacket required.
So, for italian food, I had a wonderful meal six days ago at Il Pagliaccio at in Rome at 129 Via dei Banchi Vecchi. There is a Yelp page. And four days ago I truly enjoyed the complete experience at Ora d'Aria in Florence at 11R Via dei Georgofili. They also have a Yelp page, which I believe does not do them enough justice.
Perhaps the best Italian food is still in Italy.
Enjoy (try)!
