Oh boy. So bare with me while I explain these 2 stars..
Before leaving Munich this past weekend, we decided to walk around and find lunch wherever piqued our interest. We found this quaint little restaurant with open outside seating. Perfect.
The waiter came over, asked if we would like to start with a little champagne or prosecco, which we totally indulged in. Why not? It was a beautiful Sunday and we were soaking up a little more vacation time. Then the waiter said, "ok and for water- still or sparkling?" It wasn't a question of IF we wanted water, but what kind. This is where my issues began (stay tuned).
The menu was obviously pricey, but nothing outrageous that we weren't prepared for. However, the problem came when we were served. The portions were very small, and the taste couldn't back up the size, or price. We're pretty experienced fine diners, so a small, expensive lunch or dinner wouldn't be unheard of. My issue was that the food was just "okay". It was tasty, but not out of this world gourmet. If you're charging 25 euro for 6 ravioli, they should melt in my mouth. The black truffle they used seemed old or stale, as there was no flavor. Even a little cheating by adding some white truffle oil right before serving would have 100% enhanced the flavor. The asparagus soup, the tomato/mozz salad, and the beef tartare were all enjoyable. Again, were they the best I ever had? Not by a long shot. But they would have been just fine for lunch- had it not been outrageous!
When ordering, my husband was asked if he would like to add a salad beforehand (which wasn't listed on the menu), and we both said yes. The tomato/mozzarella was lovely. Just, again, a small portion.
The beef tartare was on a bed of white asparagus. This was a fun, seasonal take on the traditional dish. It was good.
Once we got the bill, we about fell over. We expected around 100 euro, but it was 151 euro! Where did we go wrong? Those salads were 15 euro EACH (I'll post pictures so you can get an idea). The water that was mentioned (not offered, more like "here's what you're getting")? Another 8 euro! Finally, the champagne was 28 euro per glass- holy crap! (It was very nice, but not Dom Perignon, or even Moet; in fact, when I asked to see the bottle, it was different than the name I was told before- which I couldn't understand- and looked like a label I'd find at the market)
Now, I'm all for admitting my mistakes. Absolutely, we could have asked for the prices of every thing as we went (minus the water, that was a surprise), but how gauche- especially when you would think that as it is LUNCH, not a fine dining dinner, the waiter would say "here are our options for champagne, and prices". If you have nothing to hide, and 100% back up your products, you have no problem with giving prices. Its respect for your customers. I can promise you that the likes of Joel Robuchon or Julian Serrano do not hide their prices- they are a prime example of a $500 dinner that leaves you beyond satisfied. Sorry Ristorante Galleria, you are not even close to being on par with these guys. (But their prices would have you thinking as much)
All in all, the food was probably 3 stars, but the surprise pricing, and the high pricing for sub-par cuisine, barely lets me give this 2 stars. I cannot believe we paid 151 euro (about $170) for lunch.. lesson completely learned. If you're ok with these prices AND want to take a chance on the food, absolutely go. Just be prepared to pay about 30% more than you'd imagine its worth.
To the owners: you have so much possibility here! Your atmosphere is lovely, and your ideas on your menu are inventive. Either lower your prices by about 30% (which would still be high, and definitely profitable), or increase the quality of your food. The shady nature of your waiter(s) is outrageous and should be changed. You'd be surprised how open customers are to add-ons; they just need to be aware of what they're agreeing to.
