Allergy Ignored at a Michelin Star
This was the restaurant my partner and I were most excited about during our Italy trip — a rare find offering a full vegetarian tasting menu that also appeared to accommodate my egg allergy. Every time we see a vegetarian tasting menu while traveling, we make it a point to try it, so our expectations were high.
One course was an omelette, which they replaced for me with a simple salad of balsamic and olive oil. While not the most creative substitute, I appreciated the effort. What confused us was that my partner, who doesn’t have any allergies, was also served the salad instead of the original dish — odd, but not worth raising a fuss over.
Then came the dessert: fried eggplant with a chocolate cream. It tasted fine, but within minutes I began to experience the telltale signs of an allergic reaction — tingling in my throat, swelling of my lips. We had just been handed a printed recipe of the dessert with the bill, and sure enough, eggs were listed among the ingredients. Alarmed, we asked the staff if my portion had been modified. They assured us it had — though we weren’t convinced and we couldn’t escalate things further due to a lack of time.
On the way home, my symptoms worsened, and I ended up throwing up everything I had eaten. Concerned, my partner emailed the restaurant to flag the incident and suggest they exercise more caution in the future — not seeking compensation, just hoping for accountability. Unfortunately, the chef’s response was dismissive and defensive, denying any possibility that egg was present and insisting the food couldn’t have caused my reaction. What else could cause my telltale sign of an allergic reaction that starts 5 mins after the “Michelin star” meal?
What could have been a memorable culinary highlight instead became a distressing and dangerous experience. We expected more care, more transparency, and at the very least, a basic apology. Instead, we were made to feel as though we imagined it.
For a Michelin-starred establishment, this level of disregard for food allergies — and the lack of basic empathy — was deeply disappointing and frankly, unsafe. Be cautious if you have dietary restrictions.
