Walked past this place a couple of months ago and the decor grabbed me through the window. We gave it a try last night, phoning at 5-ish to book a table for 2. We got one at 9.
It's modern and airy, but cosy at the same time. The restaurant is named after the owners' grandmas, and old black-and-white family photos adorn the walls, adding a retro, personal feel. As other reviewers have said, the acoustics are good. It looks like they thought it out well. The space has a very high ceiling but you don't even notice any noise.
We shared fried, sausage-stuffed olives and a dish of polenta with rapini and blue cheese to start, followed by their mushroom pizza. With a slice of zuccotto and a $45 bottle of Tuscan red, plus an espresso, the total was $113, which was extremely reasonable.
The olives were rather salty, and not especially tasty, but the textures were fun. The polenta was delicious, very light, even a little creamy, and it made me want to try adding rapini and cheese next time I make it. The rapini had a kind of lemony taste that offset the cheese in a really interesting way. The pizza dough was very, very good, and the mushrooms and cheese were a delicious combination. If I understood correctly, the mushrooms had been marinaded, and different bites gave you different tastes of herbs like rosemary, or fennel seed. The cake was super light, filled with chocolate cream and vanilla cream, not too sweet, not soggy; the perfect end to the meal. The wine was excellent.
The staff were friendly and helpful. Service was nicely paced. And we were there till 11.20pm, not feeling pushed to leave. I'd definitely go back and would recommend the place as a tasty, well-priced option.
