I kept on hearing about Rita's Italian Ice and Frozen Custard, and how good it is ever since I moved to the Atlanta area in 2015. I always planned to come here, but the planets never quite aligned correctly. The long lines that I saw at the Rita's Italian Ice in Brookhaven always scared me off, and this place is now just down the street from me. This business is almost always busy, and is in a small shopping center named Cambridge Square. Rita's does not allow indoor seating; nor are there any tables outside. It's all strictly order inside or at the walk up window and take it all to go, either back to your car, or you can take a short walk across the street and enjoy your treat at Blackburn Park somewhere in the shade.
On Wednesday of last week, I dragged R in with me during the early afternoon to finally try something from Rita's. There were only two other customers inside when we got there. Parking was easy to find. All of the employees and customers wore face masks, and we all social distanced from each other. There is a plexiglass barrier at the counter separating the customer side from the employee side. I looked at the big menu on the wall and got immediately intimidated by the different treats served up here, such as Italian ice, frozen custard, gelati (layers of Italian ice and custard), concrete (custard blended with toppings), blendini (custard blended with Italian ice and toppings), Misto shake (Italian ice blended with custard), frozen drink (Italian ice blended into a drink) and milkshake (made with custard). Choices, choices, choices ... Ugh!
One thing I noticed quickly about the employees is that they are very quick and very efficient. They also have great customer service skills. All these positive traits were most probably learned and practiced a lot during the times when the crowds line up. The employees were also helpful. Because I was so indecisive, one of the employees cheerfully offered to provide me with tiny sample spoons of any flavors I'd like to try. I looked at the list of Italian ices on the wall that is updated as flavors are brought out or they run out of flavors, and asked for a sample of the coconut Italian ice. Uh ... it was much sweeter than I liked, so this discovery allowed me to happily eliminate many of the items on the menu. This left the frozen custard, concrete and milkshake formats for me to choose from.
I finally ordered a custard twist sundae (both vanilla and chocolate), with brownie bites, whipped cream and a cherry on top. I liked that the brownie bites weren't too sweet, so this was a perfect frozen custard treat for me. R got a Misto shake with pineapple Italian ice and vanilla custard, and he really liked it.
The next time I come back, I will most likely get either a concrete or a milkshake, since I like the frozen custard here at Rita's.
