Rita’s Is My 26-Year-Old Ritual | Eater

"The gelati — a layered treat that solves the choice between the chain’s flagship water ice and its thick custard — is presented as a seasonal, almost ritualistic pleasure: a base of soft custard, a middle of crackling slush-like water ice, and a final dollop of dense custard on top. The author sticks to a childhood order of chocolate water ice with chocolate custard, preferring to burrow a spoon to get all three textures at once rather than the uniform Blendini, and celebrates the melting moment when a syrupy, Tootsie-Roll-like pool forms. Eating one in a suburban parking lot (often from the car’s popped trunk, wrapped in napkins to stave off mess) functions as a time machine: each spoonful conjures memories from ages 6 through adulthood, ties to family moments and local landmarks, and offers continuity amid changing storefronts and life stages. Small changes — new novelty flavors and rotating teenage staff — don’t alter the core experience, which serves as a tactile, flavorful tether to home and the author’s past." - Bettina Makalintal

I love snowballs. This is like those super buttery snowballs you sometimes get from a snowball stand. The custard is like those incredibly creamy TCBY frozen yogurts. Very rich. I got the cherry (I don’t usually like cherry flavors), but this one with the cheesecake custard tasted like when you finish a vanilla shake and have the maraschino cherry and juice mixing in at the bottom (there were little maraschino cherry pieces in the ice). The people there were super nice. It’s right across from the abandoned sonic and next to the Little Caesar’s (next to the chase bank). The person I went with got the blendini (sorry no pics), it’s the ice mixed with the custard (they got cookie dough and cheesecake).

Best ice cream in Slidell. I hope they get the business they deserve. The custard is amazing especially in the waffle cup/cone. They also have pup cups if you ask about it.

Decided to order a delivery from here since the place is new! Ordered the custard and ice. Generous amount of mix-ins for the custard but my cup wasn't even filled up all the way. As for the ice, it was nice but bland. I suppose it is ice but you would be better off buying a snowball. Not bad but there are better places in town for ice and dairy based treats.

It's good and they have a sugar-free ice but no sugar-free custard. It's also expensive. You can't just get one scoop. It's predetermined cup sizes but they do give samples of their custard and my dog enjoyed a free pup cup!

We each got custard and no one was impressed. I had to throw my $6 small custard in the trash because it tasted so bad. I love frozen custard and was so disappointed.

Every time I come here the staff is super nice and I love anything that I order! My only complaints are that this is the only location in the area and that they don’t serve the Swedish Fish and Cotten candy Italian ice every single day because they are both my absolute favorites!

10/10!! I love Italian ice and this place was the best! Went here for the first time tonight and the lady and gentleman working were so sweet and helpful! Will be back.

Best water ice in the country. Very happy to see they’ve made their way to Slidell. Had a gelato today and it tastes just like the 90s in Philly!!!
