The Best Burritos in Phoenix, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"The move at Charlotte Hansen’s beloved neighborhood nook, open since 1977, is to order burros enchilada style. This means so smothered in enchilada sauce that they must be eaten with a fork. Unlike so many great Phoenix burros, this favorite leans maximal. The rich enchilada sauce has a fiery-but-cool heat that dovetails with the heat of the red chile beef encased in the flour tortilla, smoldering away. Melted yellow cheese and lettuce round out the massive package." - McConnell Quinn

Google
Simple menu means they know what they do best and they deliver. Great place to swing in and grab lunch while supporting the local economy. Can’t go wrong with green or red chili beef but honestly anything you grab is going to be a home run.

Google
This is not an easy review to contribute because I have been a long time customer and the food has been good in the past at Rito’s Garfield. Unfortunately, my experience was not good. I ordered a green chili burrito online on 12/6/24. Toward the end of my last few bites I noticed something of a reddish color. At closer look, it was RAW MEAT. I’m not sure how this possibly could have happened accidentally, but I will not be ordering from here again.

Google
AZ you know if you know. Ritos is a must for real Mexican food generation after generations we all grew up on. Keeping it real for over 40yrs family of service and still original extended house with a screen door entrance and original Mexican arches. A must visit to all.

Ritos was great about 3yrs ago but now their food is mediocre at best. I used to eat here regularly, but lately it's been hit & miss as I've tried over & over again to give them a chance to improve. 🌱 Their prices have almost doubled while their quality of food has drastically declined! Recently I placed an order at the counter for myself and family. We were so disappointed in the food. Beef tacos fairly tasty, but beef enchiladas were dry & lumpy due to being filled with lots of clumpy cheese & way more cheese than beef. Enchilada sauce was skimpy (you'd need a magnifying glass to find it) 😔. I later found out that you need to order extra sauce in order to get the amount reasonably expected (just a way to get more money 💰) Our refried beans lacked flavor and the rice was tasteless & dry. My beefy tostada was on a shell that looked like it could be whole wheat, and tested like it was not fully cooked. I spent over $86 and felt really cheated. Needless to say I don't think I'll go back because the poor to mediocre quality of Ritos food just doesn't even come close to justifying the outrageous prices on their menu! Thinking I'll be seeking better Mexican restaurant options to patronize! 🌿 I do NOT recommend Ritos 14th Street (Garfield) or Ritos Crown (7th St, near Bethany) 😐

Google
This is one of the greatest Mexican restaurants here in Arizona. Definitely a hidden gem but worth going to. If you’re looking for authentic well-made, Mexican food this is the place to go. Any other burritos are fantastic. I could literally just eat their beans alone for every meal. I’m born and raised in this town and still have not found anything that competes with Rito’s. 10 out of 10 would recommend

Google
Best chicken chimichanga I've ever had. Outdoor seating only.

Google
This place is very small, it has no indoor seating, but there are seats and tables in the patio around the corner. That said, as soon as you enter this restaurant, the aromas of high-end cuisine permeate your soul. Everything in the menu is delicious especially their green chile burritos.

Google
So just to be real about this one Rito’s is mine and my family favorite place to eat at we practically grew up eating here and we have to admit we have been to a lot of different Mexican restaurants in many different states and ritos is by far the best your going to get when it comes to Red and green chili burritos regular or enchilada style also the enchiladas are very good and let’s not forget about the shredded beef guacamole tacos, which are amazing and super delicious. That will keep you coming back for more. The beans and rice are made to perfection some of the best you’ll ever taste. Just to be honest the location is not the best but if you grew up in this Phoenix area, it is not a problem This is a must try so if you’re ever in the Phoenix area, make sure you stop by and enjoy some of the best Mexican food. Phoenix has to offer.

Yelp
The green chili burritos are amazing. We also get the tacos dorados and also so good. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I have been going to Rito's for decades. The green chili burrito is THE BEST in the valley and my go to! Outdoor seating -- always busy, may or may not be quick but it does not matter... the wait is worth it. Police and firefighters frequent this place .. great prices for great food

Yelp
You know a place has to be pretty good when it's been around as long as Rito's. Grabbed a red and green chili mixed burrito enchilada style this last time and everything tasted pretty good. One thing I really didn't like was the meat in the burrito. I didn't like the large chunks of meat because the texture seemed to throw off each bite and would Just roll out the burrito or off of the fork. I also really wanted some more salad to balance everything better. Those are both probably just personal preferences though.

Yelp
Green chile burritos are out of this world- so so good. I crave them and anytime I am anywhere close to Ritos, I have to stop and buy a few (one for then and 2 for later). It is a big plus that you can now call in orders and use credit card (I first started coming when you had to pay cash (only) and no call ins.... and the line was still out the door! that says it all!) Must try.

Yelp
I've stopped in here a few times and food has always been good. Located in the Garfield neighborhood near downtown Phoenix. Small inside. This location is more of a takeout location as there are only a few tables outside. Service is always quick and it's nice they have an app you can order ahead through.

Yelp
Stopped here before paintball over the weekend and needed a quick bite. Super yummy breakfast burritos

Yelp
Love this original location! Nice little patio to enjoy too! Food is always incredible! They have the best bean and cheese in the valley. Service is always fast and accurate - it's an easy stop for my lunch break in between meeting clients!

Gabby R.

Yelp
Food is decent. If coming for lunch expect to wait 30 min for a basic burrito. I've been waiting and apparently everyone behind is getting there food before me.
google avatar

Delanna S.

Yelp
The burrito and beans flavor is incredible, the prices are worth the quality of the food. When you place an order online it is usually ready when it says it'll be done

Sandy O.

Yelp
In Phoenix for a few weeks and walked by this place one morning and could smell something delicious cooking. No signage so I thought perhaps a kitchen for food trucks. But went back by the next day. asked somebody sitting outside and they said it was delicious! Ordered 4 beef tacos, chips and guacamole. So good!!we went back next day.

Yelp
Got the Green chili burrito with beans. Very good, very soupy. They have the tortilla down, so that if your holding the burrito, nothing spills out. You could lay it down, but half of it will end up on your plate. Taco was good and tasty, very generous with the meat. Way over priced. $3 for a good crunchy taco is fair, theirs was $5 something. Service was fast. You have to eat outside or take it. This is one of the businesses that asks for a tip up front. This is my first time here, I didn't know how well this was going to go. 7 out of 10.

Yelp
So good , a bit pricey but it filled me up .. I got a green Chile burrito with rice and beans .. orgasmic and so satisfying . I will be back!

Greg C.

Yelp
Everyone raves about the green chile burrito well, the taste of the green chile was good enough but the beef really tough for all but a couple of bites. I am ridiculously fussy about meat quality - I freely admit, but this was waaaay below par. I should have sent it back, which is on me, so will give it another try someday but when there are places with smoked meat that is impeccable (Mangos, Boca, Mexi-Q, Rosa's, Gecko, La Ristra, Serrano) that are not only closer but, unlike Rito's, offer smoked, shredded pork, it will be awhile before i drive 25 miles to give it another shot.

Yelp
I thought I'd give this place a try based on how well they did in the recent burrito bowl. I've known about it for decades. Now that I'm here and I've just paid $70 for two green burros and five bean and cheese burritos I'm in my feels. I know the price of flour. And I know the price of beans. These these must be special beans raised by virgin elves deep in an ancient forest someplace. I want to take all this valuable stuff home and try the bean burros first. See if they give me magical powers. I hope it's worth the nine dollars each that they cost me. I can hear the people at Carolina's laughing at me. ps...Tried 1/2 of the green burro..very delicious...and one of the bean and cheese burros. It was good. It was not 9 dollars good...It was maybe...5 dollars good...not sure what they think the other 4 dollars was for....I've eaten bean and cheese burros by the hundreds in my life...I'd know a 9 dollar burro if I tasted one...This was tasty...but overpriced...I'll prolly got back to Carolina's or Rita's south of Chandler for my next bean and cheese burros...Equally tasty and more appropriately priced..

Yelp
best mexican food you will find anywhere! get in the car and go now!! tell your friends and family!!

Yelp
This is an inconspicuous spot that is apparently super popular. They have outdoor seating only, so go for lunch if you're okay with the sun beating down on you. I got the green chili beef burro, because one of the regulars on my way in recommended it, and it was honestly meh. It is a few layers of tortilla bread, and a few chunks of beef, with some onions and peppers. The thing I didn't like is that it's so full of liquid, which is not fun to eat. Get ready to wear this burro. It doesn't come with rice and beans. It was underwhelming for me and not worth the price, but at least all that bread was filling. I'd give them another try with their tacos one day.

Yelp
Best mom and pop Mexican Barrio food! The red & green burritos are fantastic, try there tacos while you are there.

L P.

Yelp
So very sad that I have to give a childhood favorite 3 stars. The food is not the same as it used to be. The quality and taste have gone down so much that it's just not even the same restaurant anymore. If you have the original recipes please go back to making the food that way. I don't know if you have new owners or if you're changing due to all of the new locations but we're noticing the downgrade of the quality of your food. If any of the original kitchen staff can go back in there and teach you all what you're doing differently please invest your time into considering that.

Zo M.

Yelp
Just ordered food online and got this. Normally I get my sides in separate cups. Called restaurant to give some constructive criticism and basically I just as TOLD that's how you ordered it. Never gotten food in this manner.

Yelp
Tried the Green Chili Burro because of the good reviews. The people did not lie. great green chili burro. A bit expensive but nothing is cheap these days.

Lola S.

Yelp
I heard about this place on social media. We drove about 15 miles to try it out. On a Wednesday at 1150a, we waited almost 45 minutes. Our order was a cheese enchilada with rice and beans, a shredded beef taco, chips and salsa, a green chili burrito, and a Mexican coke and Dr. pepper. The verdict? This place is mostly hype. The food is good, but very overpriced and not worth a trip. Our total was just under $50. The chili burrito was incredibly watery, so much so you couldn't eat it without soup practically spilling out. The chips tasted rancid. You can eat at any fast food Mexican place for just as good quality, way less and a shorter wait. Not bad food except for the chips, but not at all deserving of attention.

Yelp
This is my go to place for Mexican food in the valley hands down? The burritos, tacos, and deep fried burritos are all on point!
google avatar

Edgar C.

Yelp
One trick pony - the same green Chile burrito, beans and rise - outdoor eating with 115" no thank you

B S.

Yelp
A takeout restaurant that had the best burritos in town. Been going here since the 80's. Went yesterday and ordered A lot of food including the burritos. Was disappointed with the burritos. They changed that great taste to make it spicier. It wasn't good. I will not go back again. This location is the south 12th street in phoenix.

Donovan D.

Yelp
Great service and food with our server Angel. Nice chill spot With nice seating and ambiance.

Yelp
I highly recommend their red enchilada style burrito and their beans. I've been going here for years and not once has their recipe changed. I LOVE IT
google avatar

Jasmine M.

Yelp
BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN THE VALLEY! I repeat the absolute best Mexican food. We got the rice and bean chimichanga, chicken tacos, and their chips and salsa. Their red salsa is one of the best salsas I have ever had. It is the perfect blend of spices. I recommend this joint to everyone who enjoys Mexican food.

Alex S.

Yelp
No breakfast burritos !??? No egg and chorizo burrito. I'm mean. They open in the morning and they don't have breakfast burritos. This is the biggest joke I feel on me. Hahah
google avatar

Jean-Luc L.

Yelp
What else can I say but absolutely delicious!! This has been a favorite spot for a while and I can't believe I haven't reviewed it before. Let me just start by saying the food is incredible!! I feel you get huge portions (although just for a side of beans and rice I do feel is a little expensive for what it is) and everything else is a great value. The FLAVOR is on point, whether it be something as simple as a bean and cheese burrito or not they do not "miss". They *used to* be cash only but have recently advanced into 2021 and have multiple locations, take card, and have a mobile app to order ahead. They handled COVID incredibly well which my fam all appreciated. If you're a fan of Mexican food, this place is a must!

Cayden H.

Yelp
10/10 best Mexican food I ever eat I think it's worth the drive. The beef Tacos are really you should get them. Service is good just took long to get my food.

Yelp
So I had RitA's in Chandler in the morning... Then I came out to Phoenix to try the OG RitO's for lunch. It was weird driving in a residential area to find a Mexican food joint. They do have a small parking lot next to the building, but it seems like most people park on the street for free because it's easier to get out. They have seating with umbrellas on either side of the building. There is no space to eat inside, but it's much cooler indoors. No restroom here. I tried both the green chili and red chili burrito. The green is better. My four stars are for their green chili only. The meat was so tender and flavorful. I didn't have any bite that I didn't like. I got a plain burrito with no rice and beans, but I think it would have been better with rice and beans. My burrito was literally soupy beef stew wrapped inside a large tortilla - bad idea (I just didn't want to eat extra carbs). Not sure I'll be back, but if I do, I'll call ahead next time to avoid the wait time.

Yelp
I've been in Arizona for almost 2 years now and I have yet to find a favorite Mexican spot. I am always on the hunt for a huge wet burrito and I finally found the perfect place! It's a bit of a drive for me but it's definitely worth it. I am very, very appreciative of how SAFE they are here during COVID. They do not allow anyone to step foot inside their restaurant. There is ONLY outside seating on their cute patio area, and if you have pick up your togo order, they have tables set up outside and their employees will hand your food to you. It's such a relief that restaurants out there are taking this pandemic seriously. I've been to so many restaurants where their employees have their masks under their noses. Rito's went above and beyond to make sure that their staff and their customers are safe and comfortable!

Noah H.

Yelp
Best Red Chile Enchilada you will ever have in your life! I heard the Green Chile is good I just can't get past the red.

Yelp
A long way from home, I turn to My Trusty Yelpers for reviews. I must say they nailed it!! As I'm waking up from my Mexican Food Coma to write this review, know that this hot spot is not easy to find. But holy smokes worth it when you do. We Arrived at 11am and promptly greeted & seated. Max capacity 45, we beat the rush as is quickly started filling up. We Ordered & were served within 7 minutes!! My beef enchiladas was smothered in sauce , beans and rice were amazing! The chili verde burrito was also at hit! This place is a new must go to when we're in Phoenix!
google avatar

Yelp
Great real food...... Freshly cooked while you wait!!!! I recommend that you try the fried rice and egg rolls
google avatar

Yelp
Rito's on Garfield has the best cheese enchiladas and refried beans. The food is always amazing. The staff is nice and friendly also.

Mignon M.

Yelp
I moved from AZ in 2021 , I just moved back and couldn't wait to come get some Mexican food since Georgia doesn't compare. However the food taste different than before and the price has sky rocketed. 30 bucks for a wet burrito with rice, beans and side of sour cream and quac. Food is mid. I won't be back
google avatar

Rita Z.

Yelp
Excellent service, food amazing, fresh tortillas remind me of my grand mother.. good place for a family dinner love it! Definitely going back

Isis S.

Yelp
Food might be good. But terrible terrible service. There's many other places you can eat at that don't have such crappy attitudes.
google avatar

Maggie T.

Yelp
Best refried beans in town!!!! Got the chimichanga and shredded beef taco! You def have to order the shredded beef tacos with the side of beans and rice! I've only been here once but ima for sure come back for the refried beans.
google avatar

P S.

Yelp
My husband picked up food on the way home from work (so I wouldn't have to cook on my birthday) and we both got the mix red/green burritos but I had the chimichanga. The meat itself was really good but over all I wish they had included onions and peppers or something else in the burrito and not just meat. All these other pictures show rice and beans with the burritos but we didn't get any. I have no idea what was up with the sour cream but it was really firm and didn't spread easily. My children all got bean burritos like they usually do at every Mexican restaurant. We were surprised that for a $6 burrito (our usual places have it for $3-4) added another $1.50 to add cheese ‍. We ordered 6 burrito total and they only gave us 1 little salsa cup. The salsa was to tomatoee and tasted like marinara sauce and had no spice/heat. My son grabbed a salsa cup we had leftover from another place. I guess for the price I expected more considering we pay half these prices at our local places and get more food.
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
I always love a hole in the wall and this is no exception. I have always ordered either red Chile or green Chile burritos. Though expensive (in my opinion) I find the flavor to be quite good. I phoned in the order and picked it up when I arrived and waited about 5 minutes. There was a steady stream of people entering and it was late in the day. This place is a word of mouth type place and that's how I found it many years ago. It is best suited for take away or sit outside. I will keep Ritos on my list of "go to" places when I crave Mexican food for take out.
google avatar

Jessemine K.

Yelp
Amazing food, family owned business, what else could you ask for? The hot sauce I could drink a glass of it's so delicious!

Yelp
Rito's has been a staple of Garfield for longer than I've been alive. Nestled into the heart of a residential area (something zoning should allow for more often!), it serves a simple, southwestern menu of burritos. Green Chile. Red Chile. Beans & Rice. That's about it. You can get them in chimichanga form (deep fried), enchilada style (smothered in red sauce) or both. The menu does not have variety, but when you're consistent for so long, who needs it? It is solid, but has the rest of the dining scene caught up to it? I have a hot take: I think the ingredients by themselves are just average. The green chili is as mild as it gets. It tastes like something bought from a can, but made with a lot of LOVE. Same with the red sauce. But the way it all comes together, especially enchilada-style in a big tin is satisfying. I think a deep fried bean and rice burrito, covered in melted cheese and sour cream, swimming in a pool of red sauce is just as satisfying as a burrito can get. Yes, I think this is better than ordering the chili, and I'm a meat eater. It is that good, and what will keep me coming back. This could never replace everything on my list of frequent Mexican food cravings, but it has its place.

Yelp
Good Food and Friendly Service Rito's has been a family owned mexican restaurant, serving up some really tasty authentic Mexican food , so don't be put off by the location. Not sure why I haven't written a review of this restaurant before, I have purchased take out from Rito's on more then one occasion and have always been satisfied. Rito's is a favorite among the locals. The restraunt is small and offers take out only however there are a few concrete picnic tables. During lunch hour the wait time can be long, so it's best to phone in your order. My favorites are the Bean/cheese, Red Chili, and Green Chili burritos. The meat is flavorful, tender, and the burritos are large. Rito's is a go to place for long time Arizonans. Nothing fancy but the food is amazing. Don't miss the chance to sample authentic mexican food at great prices
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
Kinda bland, tasted more cheese then the green Chile. Very overpriced for its taste. Not worth the hype
google avatar

Frank T.

Yelp
From a Phoenix born n raised, this place hold the throne. The green chili burrito enchilada style with a side of rice and beans is the BEST you will ever find. That's a bold statement but I have been several places around the country and still this place I hold on a pedestal. Everything on this menu is good. I have been going here over 30 years and I still have not found another Mexican restaurant to take the title of best Mexican food. This is a quick take out place so don't expect too much as far as that goes. We usually hit up Circle K for a fountain drink or water and go get our food and enjoy! They do serve drinks in bottles and cans however you will not be disappointed with this small place.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
Limited menu but authentic and delicious Mexican food! Small place in local neighborhood has outdoor seating but I order online and take to go. Can get busy so I definitely recommend to order online before you go. Really good food.

Yelp
Old school Sonoran! No sign out front. No windows. I had to ask someone if this was a restaurant. Great burritos like I've loved since the 70's!

Elma S.

Yelp
Yum go eat there. Get the green chili burrito you won't regret it. Refried beans are very good too.
