I usually try to leave positive reviews, but I was really disappointed by this experience. I wanted to make a reservation here for my partner’s birthday, and while looking over the menu, I noticed the prices are already quite high. It’s a four-star restaurant, so premium pricing isn’t necessarily surprising.
What really gave me pause, though, was the automatic 20% gratuity added to every bill. In this state, workers receive full minimum wage, so it feels excessive to mandate an additional 20% on top of already premium prices. At a certain point, your pricing should account for wages, labor, and product costs without requiring customers to pay a forced gratuity.
Tipping culture in Portland feels increasingly out of control, and being required to add an extra $10–$20 regardless of service quality doesn’t sit right with me. Good service should absolutely be appreciated, but it shouldn’t feel compulsory—especially when customers are already paying elevated prices.
Policies like this may end up driving customers away rather than bringing them in. Unless you purposefully do this to keep poorer people out the. In that case this tactic would be discriminatory. Something to think about.
