Best Restaurants in Hilton Head and Bluffton, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"River House at Montage Palmetto Bluff is essentially a new restaurant, thanks to a complete remodel featuring floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the May River, an expansion of the restaurant into what was once a large, screened porch, and a new and lively bar. Chef de cuisine Daniel Vesey’s new menu also shines as brightly as the new space, with a focus on fine seafood and game. Many non-residents opt to pair a River House reservation with a night at luxurious Montage Palmetto Bluff." - Lynn and Cele Seldon

First time at The Riverhouse for my wedding anniversary! The hostesses were so sweet and wished us a happy anniversary right away. Bennie, Walter and Parker were amazing and extremely polite. The food was top notch and the chef himself brought out our appetizer. I can’t wait to come back. Thank you all!

Dinner was amazing here. Pretty view from our table, outstanding service from Cole, and all the food was so good! Worth the price tag honestly. They even brought out a snack plate with cheese and apple chips on it for our toddler. 10/10 experience

Highly recommend for a special occasion ! Amazing service and food. We had Maine Lobster for our 8 year Anniversary and birthday celebration. We sat at a beautiful table by the windows to see the gorgeous foliage that surrounds this restaurant. We started with the beef tartar. It was delicious. They also brought homemade peach bread with Amish butter! Our Maine Lobsters were cooked perfectly & server Brysce recommended cocktails and wine to compliment. At the end of our meal they brought us little desserts for our Anniversary and a cute, petite, chocolate mousse. We couldn't have had a more perfect experience. Thank you to the team at Riverhouse and Hush the Speakeasy. We will never forget this day!

This dining experience deserves a Michelin rating. The most attentive wait staff, the most delicious flavor creations, the best drinks (Mint Julep!!), the best experience all around. Noel is a top-tier hospitality expert and a model for service and courtesy, who clearly makes the people around him even better through his positivity and charm. Chef Daniel Vesey is a star, from the one-bite lemon-rosemary-ricotta starting gun to whatever finish line you reach, I have never left this restaurant wanting anything, and I’m still smiling about it today. Definitely try the duck confit appetizer for a lesson in how to fry, the steaks are superb, the risotto with squash blossoms was heavenly. The raw Washington oysters were so fresh. Lobster bisque, best I’ve ever tasted—was half tempted to tip the bowl over my face. Sides with the steak were spinach with chicharrones crumbles, wasabi root, mushroom medley (these were absolutely delicious, and Chef does not skimp on quality or quantity of the mushrooms served in individual pots—perfection!), and bone marrow. Even the peach-brioche bread and homemade butter stood out to me. Why are you still reading? Go, make a reservation now. RIVER HOUSE IS THE BEST CULINARY AND DINING EXPERIENCE WITHIN 1,000 MILES.

The Hungry Detective and Special Agent Deirdre had a fabulous experience while staying at the Montage Palmetto Bluffton. The Food: We started with an incredible wedge salad with Qual egg that was next level. We made our own Surf and Turf meal with the most sweet and succulent lobster tail and venison filet from New Zealand that was cooked perfect. The Service: Bennie and Parker are top shelf and Bennie knows his stuff and made some great selections!!! VERDICT: Guilty as sin for doing it all right!!! This is Michelin star experience hidden gem…great views, incredible food and top tier cocktails🍸🍸🍸 and wine list!! I would give 6 stars if could…it was that good🍽️🍽️🍽️

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. Dining at The River House in Palmetto Bluff was nothing short of astonishing—an evening so memorable, it deserves to be talked about in the same breath as the world’s top Michelin-starred restaurants. From the moment we arrived, Executive Chef Dan and his impeccable team curated an experience that was elegant, warm, and absolutely unforgettable. We celebrated our anniversary here, and to say they “rolled out the stops” would be an understatement. Every single course was a masterclass in flavor, presentation, and precision. We began with fresh oysters—delicately briny and beautifully presented—followed by Chef Dan’s special caviar, which was truly out of this world. The texture, the balance, the pairing—it was perfection. Then came the Wagyu beef, and I can confidently say it was the best I’ve ever had (and I’ve dined at several world-renowned steakhouses). Tender, buttery, and seasoned to highlight its natural richness—every bite melted in my mouth. We also enjoyed the venison, cooked with such care that it captured both boldness and refinement, and the duck leg, which was so flavorful and tender it nearly fell off the bone. To finish, we were served a lemon meringue ice cream pie that was bright, inventive, and the perfect sweet punctuation to an unforgettable meal. And while the cuisine alone could rival any Michelin-starred experience, it was the hospitality that elevated the evening to something extraordinary. We had our daughter with us, and not only were we welcomed with open arms, but she was delighted by a kids menu that included activities like origami, an Etch A Sketch, and more. This kind of attention to detail, for every guest at the table, is rare in fine dining—and speaks volumes about the heart of this establishment. Chef Dan and his team didn’t just serve dinner—they gave us a memory. It was refined yet relaxed, luxurious yet approachable, and every single person—from the kitchen to the front of house—contributed to making the night flawless. If ever a restaurant deserved a Michelin star, The River House at Palmetto Bluff is it. I can’t wait to return.

Beautiful southern setting in front of a lagoon. Breathtaking views. We were served breakfast there, and the made-to-order eggs were delicious. It has a huge porche/deck if you like to eat outside and a small coffee shop

River House delivered an unforgettable anniversary experience! Every dish was a masterpiece of texture and flavor. The blue crab and caviar were ocean-fresh and crave-worthy, while the Wagyu oysters melted in our mouths—velvety, rich, and perfectly prepared. The venison tenderloin was silky and seared by Jesus himself, but the duck confit stole the show with its crackling crisp skin and deep, savory flavor. And the lemon meringue? A dreamy, tangy cloud with my favorite green surprise pairing of the night! Mushrooms are the perfect side. The ricotta dish I wish I could eat everyday of my life. Even the kids were enchanted with thoughtful touches like origami and Etch A Sketches. A flawless symphony of taste, texture, and hospitality! Bravo to the chef on an unforgettable dining experience!
